What is Facebook?

• Social networking site launched in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while studying at Harvard.

• First for Harvard students, then for any ‘.edu’ address, now open to the whole web.

• Individuals can set up ‘profiles’ with information about themselves. They can then become ‘friends’ others and join ‘groups’

The Prevalence of Facebook

• As of October 2007, 42 million registered users. Expected to pass 60 million users by the end of the year

• Ranked a one of top 10-20 websites - number one for photos with over 8.5 millions photos uploaded daily

• According to TechCrunch, "about 85% of students in supported colleges have a profile . [Of those who are signed up,] 60% log in daily. About 85% log in at least once a week, and 93% log in at least once a month."

• • On October 24, 2007, the Associated Press reported

Microsoft had bought a 1.6% share of the company for $240 million.
