More than a structural envelope, a facade directly influences our experiences of places.

Understanding this importance, Cemintel has evolved its newest facade, Surround, in response to the ever-changing face of the world.

This publication reveals the elements that influenced its design and heralds a new working methodology based on openness and collaboration as a common goal.

A building’s facade is in the public realm.


Designer Kathy Demos was chosen to guide this process. Her acute social observations, coupled with her pragmatic understanding of the building industry, gave us ideas to explore, conventions to question and surprising projections of the future.

In collaborative workshops that included a cross-section of Cemintel personnel, artists and designers, major themes were identified that propelled Surround into new areas of design, materialisation and market presence.

The first challenge for the evolution of Surround was to understand its context and then look forward.

It is critical that our continual intervention into the natural world be life-affirming. The manner in which buildings are commissioned, designed, constructed and used has a powerful effect on our preservation, prosperity and well-being.

Like the body’s largest organ — the skin — facades of the future must modulate light, air and moisture not only into a building but flowing outside of it, distributing essential elements into the environment where they are needed most.

The siren call to detoxify and replenish our bodies with bacteria and nutrients is transforming the human body into fertile ground supporting new growth, energy and health.

Theme 1 Fertile Ground


Create an uninterrupted flow from interior to exterior with Surround's multi-purpose palette of colours and surfaces.


From fashion to facades, volumetric, absorbent textiles create bulbous shapes that disguise, insulate and protect the structure beneath.

Soft pleating and pliable folds belie the strength created by in-built technology. Rather than cladding buildings in unyielding surfaces, these advanced materials are designed to stimulate freedom of both movement and thought.

The yearning for softness, comfort and quietness is generating new styles of cladding.

Theme 2 Second Skin


Discover distinct shapes and curves with Surround’s custom-made panels.

The world is calling out for us to repair what can’t be renewed. Age-old techniques and the most advanced technologies will find the way to make good, to patch up what we can from the skills, imagination and resources that we have on hand.

A collage will form, where disparate elements will come together to create a whole, but where the signs of fixing and mending serve as a reminder of what has transpired, the fragility of our current state and the compelling need to do more.

The art of patchwork, so thoughtful and useful, becomes a motif for multiplicity and constancy in our every endeavour.

Theme 3 Patchwork


Group colours, patterns and textures into a distinguishing building facade.

Here is the new frontier for architecture — floating buildings and submerged cities harnessing the energy of water.

Dive in.

In its constant ebb and flow, water heralds a more fluid life; one that gradually wears away the edges and promotes an organic surface.

In its many states — clear, crystalised, buoyant and dense — water is a powerful symbol of this forecast.

From dreams of outer-space and life on earth, we recognise the power of water and its ability to propagate and sustain life.

Theme 4 Water


Design bright, build light with Surround’s high performance, lightweight system.


We do not envision a future where the complexity of life renders us lifeless in response. Instead, life-affirming energy will expand our circle of activity and generate more vigour and purpose in everything we do.

In so doing we will embrace others, furthering knowledge, sharing experiences and fostering social engagement and enterprise in everything we do.

The signs are emerging; the reasons to act are compelling.

We need to push the future out, well beyond the here and now, and into the realm of generations to come.

This publication is called Face Forward. It’s a title that suggests an orientation to the future; one based on positive thought and action.

Theme 5 Emergence


In its most elemental form, Surround offers a high performance panel facade system designed for premium interior and exterior use.

The innovations that see it reach this level include the refinement of colour — through technology. Surround panels retain their colour brilliance over time in keeping with the enduring nature of buildings.

Surface textures clear the way for ‘pattern play’, the opportunity for designers to choreograph the way facades reflect light.

There is texture too, so that people can engage with buildings through touch as well as sight.

Surround offers the prospect of co-creating, opening up ideas for new applications and the continued evolution of products relevant for our times.


We describe them as ‘ish’ - blueish, greyish, blackish, greenish, whiteish. Five colours available in five textures, from light to dark to warm and cool.

Adding to the core range is a highlight palette with a range of distinct colours. This is coded to simplify colour matching and to put the science of colour within reach of all.

The core Surround palette is a range of highly usable neutrals, each with a distinct nod to its colour origins.
