Why use VMZINC facades?

Zinc is among the most sustainable metalsused in construction today and was first usedfor roofing and gutters in large Europeancities at the beginning of the 19th century.Batten cap zinc panels were used formansard roofs but towards the end of the20th century architects began to use zinc as away to clad facades. Over the past 20 yearsVMZINC has developed a range of facadesystems that vary in dimension, joint size and type.

All VMZINC facade systems can be used fornew build and refurbishment alike and incombination with many other buildingmaterials. As with all VMZINC productsexceptional durability, very limitedmaintenance and a wide range of beautifulfinishes are offered by VMZINC facades.

Low energy used in the

manufacturingprocess

VMZINC rolled zinc products are used inconstruction industries throughout the worldfor their sustainability, distinctive appearance, and low maintenance requirements. As withroofing and rainwater systems, manufacturingprocesses for our facade systems presents alow environmental impact, particularly withregard to energy expenditure.

VMZINC facade systems benefit from zinc’sself-protecting patina which develops as aresult of exposure to water and carbon dioxide.Over the last 50 years the quantity of sulphurdioxide in the atmosphere has been greatlyreduced. SO2 being the key agent of corrosionmeans that corrosion rates are now less than1μm per year on facades. With an initialthickness of 1mm, the estimated life span of azinc facade is well over a hundred years.

95% of old rolled zinc recovered every yearin Western Europe, currently estimated at100,000 tonnes, is reused. This representssavings in mining resources of between 1 and 2 million tonnes.

VMZINC undertakes Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)tests on its products and publishes Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs),such as BRE Environmental Profiles, availablefrom our website www.vmzinc.co.uk andwww.greenbooklive.com. These provideusers with comprehensive, reliable andtransparent information on relevant environmental characteristics. Theinformation is also used by VMZINC as thebasis for its eco-design approach.

Low corrosion,long life

Recycledmaterial

Comparative energy expenditure in manufacture

Compared with other metals, very little energy is needed to manufacture zinc metal from ore –less than half the consumption of copper and stainless steel and less than a quarter of that used foraluminium. CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions are also, therefore, proportionally less.

Environmental profiles measure theimpacts of a construction material, productor building system throughout its life, notonly during its manufacture, but also itsuse in a building over an 80-year period. This includes its extraction, processing, useand maintenance and its eventual disposal.

VMZINC has been audited and reviewed byBRE Global. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)modelling derives a Certified EnvironmentalProfile and a Green Guide rating has beenproduced.

A wide range of zinc roofing and claddingsystems has been audited with thesystems receiving a Green Guide rating ofup to A+. These profiles can then beapplied to the BREEAM (BRE EnvironmentalAssessment Method) allowing VMZINC tocontribute to schemes such as the Code forSustainable Homes. VMZINC will also beoffering BRE EN 15804 environmentalproduct declarations for its products.

Since 2009, VMZINC has been OHSAS 18001certified, thus conforming to occupationalhealth and safety management systems.

VMZINC manufacturing plants haveconformed to ISO 14001 since 2004/5 soprocesses are strictly controlled to ensurethat emissions are significantly below thenational regulation threshold.

ISO 9001 is the internationally recognisedstandard for the quality management ofbusinesses and applies to all VMZINCproducts and services. Certification wasoriginally obtained in 1997 and updated inNovember 2003 to conform to ISO 9001: 2000.

The systemsUnderlying principles

6 Facade

Facade

VMZINC has been used as a material to clad facades for manydecades. Initially traditional roofing systems such as standing seampanels were installed as `roofs on walls`. Flat lock panels have alsobeen installed for many decades. Both of these systems requirevented continuous substrates and are commonly installed bytraditional hard metal roofing contractors. Over the past two decadesrainscreen facades have become very popular and VMZINC offers anumber of these rainscreen systems.

A raincreen facade is an outer skin that is back-ventilated by an airspace that is 38mm deep. The system can be used on both newbuild and renovation but always allows the outer layer to breathewhilst the inner layer deals with thermal insulation and air leakage. All joints are dry and do not use any form of sealant.

VMZINC wall panels can be joined using three mechanical joints:n Standing seam n Flat lockn Reveal

VMZINC PLUS is a unique patented product that allows zinc to beinstalled on ventilated plywood (page 10).

The product consists of VMZINC (in all finishes) having a 60μmcoating applied to the underside thus allowing a more variedamount of substrates to be used and eliminating the risk of theformation of white rust on the underside of the zinc standing seampanels. VMZINC PLUS resists to an abrasion of 40 litres when testedin accordance with ASTM D 968.

Joint types

For buildings where combustible materials such as plywood cannotbe used (for example residential developments over 18m in height),galvanised steel decks can be used as a substrate for the flat lockand standing seam panels. By combining this with mineral boardinsulation, all materials in the wall build up are A1 or A2 according to EN 13501. The steel deck must be at least 0.7mm thick and havedimensions allowing clips to be attached at the required spacings.Corrugated steel deck can only be used on vertical surfaces. For allsurfaces such as sills, parapets, etc the substrate must be continuous.

VMZINC wall panels will offer very different aspects depending on thetype of panel used. Whilst standing seam panels can offer acontinuity from roof to wall they will not offer absolute flatness. Flatlock panels also offer a more textured finish. The interlocking panelsystem provides flat panels but they are limited to 333mm in width.VMZ composite material on the other hand can offer excellentflatness whilst maintainin panels of up to 1100mm wide. For panelsbetween 333mm and 600mm in width, Mozaik panels should beconsidered – see pages 36-37.

Standing seam

Overview VMZ Standing Seam is a ventilated cladding system that can beused for both renovation and new build. As the name standingseam implies, the system consists of seams that can be crimpedin a single or double lock (for greater flatness single lock seamssometimes referred to as angle seams are recommended). Thesystem has a traditional look with the seams being 25mm high. The trays can be installed horizontally, vertically and at an angle.

This facade system offers the possibility to clad all types of walls:flat, curved or complex forms. Another great advantage of thiszinc facade system is that it can be used on both walls and roofs, thus allowing roof and wall to blend as one (standing seam roofsrequire double lock seams). The cladding panels can be varioussizes but we would not recommend that they be more than 4m inlength and 430mm in width. All aspects of VMZINC can be usedwith 0.8mm being the recommended thickness for facades.

Structure

Installation

The system is very lightweight as the panels weigh no more than7kg/m2 and can be fixed back to both soft wood open gapboarding and plywood. Both substrates require the use of 18mmthick wood and a vented airspace should be left behind thetimber of at least 38mm. The plywood must be weather and boilproof. WBP plywood is more precisely described as EN314-3 (gluebond) and EN636-2 (timber performance). When soft wood opengap boarding is used it is possible to omit every other board, however a fully boarded substrate should be used in accessibleareas. The substrate must be flush to within 2mm and all screwsand nails must be countersunk. VMZINC PLUS must be used onplywood substrates. For projects where combustible materialssuch as plywood cannot be used galvanised steel decks can beused as a substrate – see page 6 for further information.

The panels are installed in a sequential order from either left toright or right to left for vertical panels. Horizontal panels must beinstalled from bottom up. For panels less than 2m in length fixedclips can be used. For longer panels sliding clips must be usedtowards the bottom on vertical panels and to the left and right ofthe centre for horizontal panels. VMZINC clips are made from 304stainless steel and each clip must resist a pull-out force of 50daN.It is recommended that screws be used to secure the clips withthree being used per sliding clip. The use of nails offers significantly less resistance, but in the event of using nails, contractors are advised to use ring shank nails.

The panels should be installed with the protective film in place.

Overview VMZ Flat Lock panels, sometimes known asshingles, are installed on a continuousvented substrate on both renovationprojects and new build alike. The systemconsists of panels with 180 degree hemsapproximately 25mm wide that interlockand are held on the substrate using cleats. The system allows a great deal of flexibilityas flat lock panels can be made to manyshapes and sizes. The panels can be square, diamond shaped and rectangular. Themaximum recommended visible width for apanel is 600mm with the maximum lengthbeing 3000mm. The thickness of the zincused will depend on panel dimensions withsmall panels using 0.7mm zinc whereas thelarger panels will require 1mm thick zinc.Increased zinc thickness will offer a flatterpanel, however increasing paneldimensions will have the opposite effectand may induce some unevenness.

For larger panels galvanised steel cleats arerecommended. The cleats should be fixed at a maximum of 330mmcentres. For small diamond shaped panels the hems should be slightlynotched thus allowing the cleat to sit securely. When installing largerectangular panels the short side should be fixed with a long fixingstrip. It is recommended that screws be used to secure the cleats. Theuse of nails offers significantly less resistance, but in the event ofusing nails, contractors are advised to use ring shank nails. Overview Interlocking Panels consist of a panel face, reveal joint and are fixed in position usinghidden fasteners. The panels can beorientated horizontally or vertically and canbe applied equally to soffits. Panels areavailable in all finishes of 1mm thickVMZINC with standard panel widths being200mm, 250mm and 300mm. Themaximum panel width is 333mm andlength 6m, panels of less than 0.5m arenot recommended. Joint widths can beeither 10mm or 20mm. It should be notedthat panel width = panel face + joint. The depth of the panel is 25mm.

26 Facade

The system is relatively lightweight as the panels weigh no morethan 12kg/m2 and can be fixed back to both timber and metal subframes. Support rails are installed at 600mm centres (maximum).Aluminium rails are 2mm thick with both timber and aluminiumrails requiring a supporting face of at least 40mm. All panels thatare over 2m in length must allow for thermal expansion andcontraction by using stainless steel clips. The fixed point being atthe top of the panel for vertical installation and in the middle forhorizontal installation.

The panels are installed in a sequential order from top to bottomfor horizontal panels. The upper edge of each panel is engagedinto the lower edge of the panel above. The panels are mechanically attached using screws and/or the panel fixing clipthat allows for thermal movement. The panels should be installedwith the protective film in place.

VMZINC PLUS must be used on all non-vertical flashings if opengap soft boards are not being used.

Facade

Facade

VMZ Sine Wave is a corrugated profile inzinc that can be fixed to a wooden or ametal framework. Along with face fixedVMZ Composite sheets this is one of thefew VMZ facade systems that relies onvisible fasteners. The standard profile forthe panel is an 18/76mm module which isavailable in both 0.8mm and 1mmthicknesses. The system can be used toclad walls both horizontally and vertically.

The system is fixed back to timber or metal (galvanised steel atleast 1.5mm thick or aluminium at least 2mm thick) rails that aretypically at centres of between 0.8m and 1.2m (depending onloading). The rails must have a supporting face width of 40mmand should allow a minimum vented space between the VMZ Sinewave panel and the insulation/sheathing of 38mm.

The panels are installed in a sequential order from bottom up.Panels are fixed in place with stainless steel screws on everyother wave. The maximum length for the panels is 6m. For panelsover 3m in length slotted or over-size holes must be pre-drilled toallow the thermal expansion and contraction of the panels to take place.

The panels should be installed with the protective film in place.

Facade

Overview VMZ Composite material consists of two layers of 0.5mm thickpre-weathered zinc and a fire rated 3mm polyethylene core. The material is available in QUARTZ-ZINC, ANTHRA-ZINC and the 5 PIGMENTO colours. The stiffness of VMZ Composite allows verylarge and exceptionally flat panels to be manufactured andinstalled. However the nature of composite material also allows itto be folded into complex and yet rigid shapes. Standard panelscan be up to 3900mm x 900mm in size, however it is possible toextend this to 5900mm and 1100mm. It should be noted that1100mm wide panels are only available in QUARTZ-ZINC.

VMZ Composite is always installed using the rainscreen principalwith a vented air space of at least 38mm between the back of thepanels and the insulation or solid structure. Panels can be installedboth horizontally as well as vertically. The panels can also be fixedwith visible fasteners or using a cassette system with hidden fixings.VMZINC Composite can also be fixed using a structural bond (verticalpanels only) thus providing another secret fix option.

The system is lightweight as the panelsweigh no more than 13kg/m2 and aregenerally fixed to aluminium cladding railswith a thickness of at least 2mm. The zonebehind the panels must be vented and atleast 38mm deep.

The panels are installed on cladding rails. The exact dimensioning of the rails andbrackets will depend on loadings and panelorientation. Vertical panels are generallyinstalled using a hook and pin principalwhereas horizontal panels rely on acontinuous rail. Depending on the systemused, individual panels may be independ-ently removable. Standard panel installa-tion is bottom up with the standard jointwidth being 20mm.

The panels should be installed with theprotective film in place.

Further technical information

Facade

Zinc aesthetics Zinc is a material that requires almost no maintenance as the rinsingeffect of rainwater performs this task naturally. However when zinc isused on a non rinsed surface such as a protected facade or soffit it ispossible that the zinc may exhibit some superficial stains. These stainswill not affect the integrity of the zinc itself. It is for this reason that thevery dark grey ANTHRA-ZINC should be carefully considered beforebeing designed on a non rinsed facade or soffit. In marine locationsthe risk of superficial staining in these areas increases. Whilst stains arepossible on QUARTZ-ZINC and the PIGMENTO range the visual effect isgreatly reduced and therefore these finishes may be more appropriatefor some specific locations, however in a severe non-rinsed marineenvironment (1km from the sea), staining is still possible and thereforePIGMENTO should not be used in this application.

Zinc can be installed adjacent to limestone. The run off fromlimestone onto zinc material is acceptable. However, limestone dustand gypsum dust generated during cutting operations can react withzinc in the presence of water and form a superficial layer of whiterust. No dust should be in contact with unprotected zinc. To preventwhite rust, good construction practices should be used to limit theamount of dust that comes in contact with the zinc.

VMZINC manufacturing uses a colour management system basedon the Y-Factor. The Y-factor ranges from 0 to 100: 0 is black and100 is white. The range for ANTHRA-ZINC is 5 to 7 and the rangefor QUARTZ-ZINC is 22 to 25. Variations are possible within thisrange when different production batches are used.

All VMZINC facade systems are supplied with a protective film. Werecommend that the film be left on the panels during installation. The film should only be removed when other trades are no longerworking in the vicinity of the completed zinc facade. The filmmust not be partially removed as this will lead to unsightly stains.Panels adjacent to one another must not be left with one filmedand the other unfilmed. The zinc facade panels should bedelivered to site with the film completely covering panel faces butnot so as to obstruct film removal in joints. The protective film canleft on the panels for up to 2 months after panel installation.

VMZINC Membrane is a breather layer that allows water vapour topass through it but is water proof to liquid water (up to a columnof 2m). VMZINC Membrane should be used to protect the internalleaf of the rainscreen wall which is often the insulation.

Whilst zinc has a fire performance rating ‘AA’ - BS 476: Part 3 (`lowvulnerability` class in Scotland) and has a fire classification of A1 or A2-s1,d0 when used on a vented wall it may be necessary to addressfire risks created by the vented cavity. This can be dealt with bycreating flashings that compartmentalise the vented cavity or by usingintumescent fire barriers that maintain the ventilated cavity in normalconditions, leaving the 38mm continuous free air space, but, in theevent of fire, the intumescent ventilated fire barriers quickly expand toseal off the cavity to prevent fire spread. Not all fire retardantmaterials are compatible with zinc, therefore please contact us shouldyou require project-specific information.

VMZINC has been used as a roofing systemfor almost 200 years. The most commonsystem is standing seam roofing. However, for heritage projects, batten cap roofing is apopular option.

Roofing systems

VMZINC ornaments were first made by 19thcentury workshops in Paris. The traditioncontinues with VMZINC ornamentsfabricating both standard and bespokeornaments that are sent to all corners of theworld.

Whether for new build or refurbishment,VMZINC rainwater systems have beendesigned to complement a wide range ofbuilding materials and styles. Pre-weathered finishes offer exceptionalcolour stability while developing thenatural, self-protecting patina for whichzinc is renowned. This ensures thatmaintenance requirements will be minimalthroughout the systems’ design life andthat the material’s installed appearancewill be retained for many years.
