Fab Three psyched up Sean Lennon says Melbourne band Tame Impala sounds like his dad, Beatle John Lennon By DANIELLE McGRANE TAME Impala could be for- given for being sick of Beatles comparisons, but when it comes from John Lennon’s son it’s got to be taken as a compliment. ‘‘I was speaking to Sean Lennon and he told me I sound like his dad,’’ says Kevin Parker, Tame Impala’s leader. ‘‘So I guess if anyone’s going to tell me I sound like John Lennon I guess he’s the one with some sort of auth- ority on it.’’ Parker, who hails from Perth, is bemused by the Fab Four comparisons. ‘‘I just don’t think we sound like them so much . . . but I’ve listened back to my vocals sometimes and gone, ‘Oh yeah, that kind of sounds like the Beatles’. ‘‘I’ve never thought I sound like John Lennon in partic- ular,’’ he adds, which puts him at odds with the Beatle’s own son. ‘‘We played some shows with him (Sean Lennon) in America. He’s a trippy kind of dude,’’ Parker says. ‘‘Trippy’’ is also a good de- scription of the psychedelic melodies the ARIA award- winning band are known for producing. Their 2012 album Lonerism falls into the ‘‘hypno-groove’’ genre. Think the Beatles during their Ravi Shankar period. Comparisons aside, Tame Impala’s hypno-grooves cre- ate a natural high that are all their own. Parker says that’s ‘‘a small part of the idea’’ behind creat- ing the music. ‘‘I definitely think that one of the purposes of psy- chedelic music is to have a kind of an effect on you that’s like you’re on drugs only you can’t have any drugs, or you don’t like drugs,’’ Parker says. ‘‘Sometimes I get stoned when I’m making music, sometimes I get drunk. Some- times I get both. Sometimes I’m completely sober. ‘‘In the end it doesn’t really matter. The only thing that matters is that you’re getting something out of it, or that it’s moving you.’’ With three 2013 ARIA awards (Album of the Year, Best Group and Best Rock al- bum) and a 2014 Grammy Award nomination (Best Al- ternative Music Album) the group are clearly moving the right people. But Parker doesn’t think 2014 will be Tame Impala’s year at the Grammys, as they battle bands such as Vampire Weekend and The National for the award. ‘‘We’re up against bands that people have actually heard of. People aren’t going to be confused if Vampire Weekend win, but if they read out ‘Tame Impala’ everyone’s going to go, ‘Who the f*** is Tame Impala?’’’ While the group starts to make ripples in international waters, the waves of success at home have propelled them towards one of Australia’s biggest festivals, Big Day Out. But Parker is modest about that, too, saying he’s excited at the prospect of meeting his own music idols there. ‘‘I was actually a massive Deftones fan (also to play BDO) when I was in high school, so that’s going to be a trip down memory lane,’’ he says. ‘‘Hopefully I’ll get to meet them, that would be even better.’’ Her perfectly good heart on top again LOS ANGELES: Taylor Swift has been named the most charitable star of 2013 by charity website DoSome thing.org. The 24-year-old singer has topped the site’s ‘‘Celebs Gone Good’’ list for the second year running. Editors cited Swift’s work at the Winter White Gala in London, for homeless youth, i and to her $112,758.64 gift to the Nashville Symphony. Boyband One Direction were second, raising more than $800,000 for cancer re- search in 2013. The group also volun- teered in Ghana for Comic Relief, a charity based in the UK that raises money for projects worldwide. Beyonce Knowles was third, with editors citing her work for Goodwill and Chime for Change. Late Fast & Furious star Paul Walker followed at fourth. Musical duo Mack- lemore & Ryan Lewis roun- ded out the top five. Driver’s intelligence fails dame LONDON: Dame Judi Dench has told how she was once late for lunch with the boss of MI6 — because the driver sent by Britain’s Intelligence Service could not find where to pick her up. The actress, who famously played spy boss M in the James Bond movies for a 17-year span, had been in- vited along to the famous London HQ to meet her real-life counterpart Sir David Spedding. She was issued with a driver whose bungling led to her being 45 minutes late. ‘‘I was invited to lunch (at MI6) by Sir David Spedding. They asked me for 12.30 for 1 and I said ‘‘Yes, my driver . . . ‘‘ and they said ‘‘No, no, not your driver, our driver. ‘‘He couldn’t find me . . . I was so late for lunch — em- barrassingly late.’’

Fab Three psyched up

Sean Lennon says Melbourne band Tame Impala sounds like his dad, Beatle John Lennon

By DANIELLE McGRANE

TAME Impala could be for-given for being sick of Beatlescomparisons, but when itcomes from John Lennon’sson it’s got to be taken asa compliment.

‘‘I was speaking to SeanLennon and he told me Isound like his dad,’’ saysKevin Parker, Tame Impala’sleader. ‘‘So I guess if anyone’sgoing to tell me I sound likeJohn Lennon I guess he’s theone with some sort of auth-ority on it.’’

Parker, who hails fromPerth, is bemused by the FabFour comparisons.

‘‘I just don’t think we soundlike them so much . . . but I’velistened back to my vocalssometimes and gone, ‘Ohyeah, that kind of sounds likethe Beatles’.

‘‘I’ve never thought I soundlike John Lennon in partic-ular,’’ he adds, which putshim at odds with the Beatle’sown son.

‘‘We played some showswith him (Sean Lennon) inAmerica. He’s a trippy kindof dude,’’ Parker says.

‘‘Trippy’’ is also a good de-scription of the psychedelicmelodies the ARIA award-winning band are known forproducing. Their 2012 albumLonerism falls into the‘‘hypno-groove’’ genre. Thinkthe Beatles during their RaviShankar period.

Comparisons aside, TameImpala’s hypno-grooves cre-ate a natural high that are alltheir own.

Parker says that’s ‘‘a small

part of the idea’’ behind creat-ing the music.

‘‘I definitely think thatone of the purposes of psy-chedelic music is to havea kind of an effect on youthat’s like you’re on drugsonly you can’t have anydrugs, or you don’t likedrugs,’’ Parker says.

‘‘Sometimes I get stonedwhen I’m making music,sometimes I get drunk. Some-times I get both. SometimesI’m completely sober.

‘‘In the end it doesn’t reallymatter. The only thing thatmatters is that you’re gettingsomething out of it, or thatit’s moving you.’’

With three 2013 ARIAawards (Album of the Year,Best Group and Best Rock al-bum) and a 2014 GrammyAward nomination (Best Al-ternative Music Album) thegroup are clearly moving theright people.

But Parker doesn’t think2014 will be Tame Impala’s

year at the Grammys, as theybattle bands such as VampireWeekend and The Nationalfor the award.

‘‘We’re up against bandsthat people have actuallyheard of. People aren’t goingto be confused if VampireWeekend win, but if theyread out ‘Tame Impala’everyone’s going to go, ‘Whothe f*** is Tame Impala?’’’

While the group starts tomake ripples in internationalwaters, the waves of success

at home have propelled themtowards one of Australia’sbiggest festivals, Big Day Out.But Parker is modest aboutthat, too, saying he’s excitedat the prospect of meeting hisown music idols there.

‘‘I was actually a massiveDeftones fan (also to playBDO) when I was in highschool, so that’s going to be atrip down memory lane,’’ hesays. ‘‘Hopefully I’ll get tomeet them, that would beeven better.’’

The group also volun-teered in Ghana for ComicRelief, a charity based inthe UK that raises moneyfor projects worldwide.

Beyonce Knowles wasthird, with editors citingher work for Goodwill andChime for Change.

Late Fast & Furious starPaul Walker followed atfourth. Musical duo Mack-lemore & Ryan Lewis roun-ded out the top five.
