RESUMEN

1. Motivación del proyecto

La motivación del proyecto consiste en, partiendo de una motocicleta existente sinmodificar su sistema de propulsión de ninguna manera, acabar con otra motocicleta queúnicamente con modificaciones estructurales sea capaz de completar un trazado en asfalto más

rápido que la original.

Usando exactamente el mismo motor, ruedas, basculante y suspensión que en unaDucati Monster S2R 800 original, se rediseñará el chasis de manera que la motocicleta final posea unas prestaciones deportivassuperiores a la motocicleta de partida.

Para ello se van a fijar tres objetivos prácticos que, de cumplirse, verificarían elobjetivo conceptual ya expuesto. Son lossiguientes:

· Que el chasis ofrezcadeformaciones mínimas ante los esfuerzos

que soportará durante su uso.

· Que tanto el chasis como la motocicleta final sean más ligeros que sus respectivosoriginales.

· Que la motocicleta final sea funcional y pueda utilizarse y conducirse,

independientemente de las restricciones legales y de tráfico.

2. Metodología

Para conseguir acabar con un producto que verifique los tres objetivos anteriormentemencionados se va a proceder según diagrama mostrado.

En la fase de diseño, se usa la idea de minimalismo para resolver los tres objetivossimultáneamente. Es importante encontrar una idea o concepto para aplicar en todas las

variables del diseño para que el producto final esté claramente enfocado y sea coherente entresus diferentes partes.

En la fase de simulación se somete al chasis a los esfuerzos más desfavorables que va asoportar en la conducción para la que se concibe. Esto se hace mediante el paquete de softwareCATIA VR5.17, que simula virtualmente mediante elementos finitos las tensiones ydeformaciones que se producen en una estructura según los esfuerzos que se coloquen. Al finalde esta fase se tiene un chasis con todas las cotas y espesores validados para cumplir losobjetivos marcados. Las tensiones máximas son menores que las admisibles por el metal sindeformación plástica, y de los casos simulados, el mayor desplazamiento es de 1,3 mm en la pipa de dirección. A continuación se muestran los resultados de tensiones y desplazamientos de

las dos simulaciones más críticas.

El proceso de fabricación consiste en fabricar físicamente el chasis. Esto se lleva a caboen Todd’s Cycle, taller de construcción de motocicletas custom en Huntington Beach,

California con ayuda de Chassis Design Co., empresa especializada en la construcción de chasisde motocicletas situada en Riverside, California.

3. Conclusión

Una vez acabado el proceso de fabricación se han verificado los tres objetivos prácticosde manera teórica. Es necesaria una verificación empírica para garantizar que se han cumplidoverdaderamente.

Se pesó el chasis alternativo frente al original y el peso fue de 6,023kg frente a los12,450 kg del chasis original. Esto supone una reducción de peso del aproximadamente 50%sólo del chasis.

Al pesar la moto entera en condiciones de funcionamiento (peso húmedo), se obtuvo un peso de 155 kg frente a los 195 kg de la motocicleta original. Esta reducción de peso de 40 kgsobre el peso original es un valor extraordinario.

El objetivo de funcionalidad también se verifica ya que la motocicleta se puedeconducir a pesar de las restricciones de homologación que impiden su circulación por vía pública.

Es importante también notificar que no se ha podido cuantificar las deformaciones delchasis durante su uso, solamente se ha podido realizar una verificación visual en funcionamientode resultado satisfactorio.

Por equipamiento y tiempo no se pudo realizar una última verificación en pista deltiempo necesario para recorrer un trazado que supondría la verificación absoluta del objetivoconceptual.

REDESIGN OF A MOTORCYCLE FRAME: DUCATI MONSTER S2R 800

ABSTRACT

1. Motivation for the Project

The project consists on the design and construction of an alternative motorcycle frame

for the Ducati Monster S2R 800 so that with structural changes only, the final motorcycle is

able to outperform the original one on paved ground.

Using the same engine, wheels, swingarm and suspension, the frame will be redesigned

so that, in combination with the exact same powerplant, the motorcycle will have better sporting

characteristics.

To achieve this conceptual

objective, three practical targets were set so

that if verified, they will lead to the

successful consecution of the conceptual

objetive:

· The frame must offer minimaldeformation when stressed with use

· The frame and the final motorcycle

must both be lighter that their original

counterparts.

· The final motorcycle must be able to be driven without regard to legal and traffic

considerations. It must end up in running order.

2. Methodology

To end up with a motorcycle and a frame that verify the three targets set before, the

project will consist of the `stages shown in the diagram

For the design stage, the concept of minimalism is going to be use to solve all of the

three targets at the same time. It is very important to find an idea or a concept to apply to all of

the different variables of the design process so that the final product is clearly focused and iscoherent with its different parts.

The stage of simulation consists of virtually stressing the frame to the stress it will

suffer in the most critical situations it was meant to withstand. This is done with the software

package CATIA VR5.17, which calculates the possible peak stress and deformations using

finite elements. By the end of this stage, all of the specifications of the frame will be calculated

and validated. The following images show the results for Von-Misses stress and deformations in

the two most critical situations the frame will suffer.

The fabrication stage basically consists of building the actual frame already designed

and validated to its correct specifications. This is done in Todd’s Cycle, a custom motorcycle

shop located in Huntington Beach, California, with the help of Chassis Design Co., a company

specialized in building motorcycle frames.

3. Conclusion

By the end of the fabrication stage, it can be stated that the three practical target have

been verified only theoretically. It is therefore necessary to verify these targets have been

successfully met by empirical methods.

The original frame was weighed at 12,450 kg, and the alternative frame only put 6,023

kg on the scale. This means a weight reduction of almost 50 % on the original weight of the

frame.

On the other hand, when the motorcycle was weighed in running order (wet weight), it

was found to weigh 155 kg opposed to the 195 kg of the original frame. This weight reduction

of 40 kg is outstanding and exceeds original expectations.

The target of functionality is also met as the motorcycle can be driven and is in running

order. On the other hand, traffic regulations prevent it from being driven on public roads.

The deformations the frame suffers with its use have not been able to be measured

numerically. A visual verification gives positive results, but due to lack of equipment, it has not

been possible to quantify the deformations.

The last verification possible, racing both the original and alternative motorcycles in aclosed circuit and compare their lap times, has not been able to be completed due to lack of

equipment and time, but all of the results obtained seem to say it will also be successfully

verified. Nevertheless, without empirical results, nothing can be assured.
