This presentation includes the photos and an edited transcript of the Fabric of Cal Fashion Show, which was held on August 25, 2008 in the Recreational Sports Complex, as part of Caltopia VI.

This is the sixth Fabric of Cal fashion show, presented by the Office of Marketing & Business Outreach.  OMBO is the group which manages the campus’ brand and engages in cause‐related activities.  Their mission statement: “Promoting Excellence.  Inspiring Change,” is evident in today’s fashion show.

The Fabric of Cal is designed to highlight the diversity of Cal. This year’s theme is “Making a Difference” and we will be sharing stories from our diverse and talented models.  If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What can one person do?” just listen to these stories, and you will be inspired.  Even if it’s taking a few extra steps to recycle that soda can instead of tossing it in the nearest trash can, you HAVE made a difference!

This year, we are featuring not only Cal‐logoed apparel, but also garments designed to get you through the day – from class to hanging out at the café to loungewear.  Our models are all Cal students, staff, faculty, and alumni, and they demonstrate the diversity that makes up our campus community.  It is this “Fabric of Cal” which makes us the number one public educational institution in the world! 

My name is Devin Wicks, and I am your host.  I work at the RSF as the Director of Fitness Operations. We provide world class fitness and wellness programming, including personal training, instructional classes, employee fitness and wellness programming through our WorkFIT program, offering you the best opportunity to get active and have fun on your path to health and wellness. 

I also work with various Cal athletic teams, including some of the newest Cal Olympic medalists, and I am the assistant coach for the Cal Dance team which works hard at every football and basketball game to inspire Cal spirit.  For the past two years, I’ve organized the Cal AIDS/Lifecycle team which includes fellow alums, faculty/staff and Cal students. Together, we’ve raised a combined total of over $120,000 for the SF AIDS Foundation. Go Bears! !

Carol is the Alumni Relations and Events Manager in Student Musical Activities, and works with the Cal Band, UC Choral Ensembles, and UC Jazz Ensembles.  She works on behalf of Cal staff by serving as a member of the Berkeley Staff Assembly Coordinating Committee and the Fund Raising Council.  

In addition, Carol is participating in the campus Leadership Development Program, working with a team of seven other staff on recommendations for “Green Computing” at Cal.  Carol is wearing the perfect pjs – Karen Neuburger pink heart cotton/poly pajamas with matching slipper socks.

Making a Difference in supporting sustainability and staff initiatives!

Della, an Operations Supervisor for the Payroll Unit of RSSP, is wearing a set of soft green pajamas and non‐skid socks also provided by Karen Neuburger.   In her spare time, Della works on behalf of staff in planning the Cal Summerfest and has served as treasurer of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Solano Valley Alumnae Chapter) for the past 3 years.

Next on stage, we have Daniel Sales. Daniel is a second year majoring in Civil Engineering.  Daniel is also a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineering, and is active in the Hispanic Engineers and Scientists and Multicultural Engineering Prep.

Valencia is a first year Social Welfare/Mass Communications major with a minor in Dance.  That’s quite a full schedule!  She is publicity coordinator and lead dancer for the Caribbean folk performing dance company known as “Sistas‐Wit‐Style.” This dance company teaches dance to children, teenagers, and adults, and educates people about the culture of the Caribbean.

Allie Apana is a second year majoring in Mass Communications.  She is a member of your  Cal Dance Team, the Movement, and Danceworx, as well as the Undergraduate Mass Communications Association.  

Today, Allie is pretty in pink – sporting a pink Creation of Demand Cal cap and a hot pink MV Sport tote bag.  The bag has a zippered interior pocket and is just right for carrying around dance gear.  Creation of Demand and MV Sport are both official Cal licensees.  Royalties from licensed products such as these support many vital campus programs.

Quanice is a fourth year majoring in Sociology.  Quanice believes in giving back to the community, and she does just that in several ways.

Say hello to Dyanna Quizon.  Dyanna is a graduate student in law.  She serves as External Co‐Chair for the Pilipino American Law Students Association and is an Asian American Studies Graduate Student Instructor.

Please greet Marco Lindsey.  Marco is the Executive Assistant to the Dean in the Haas School of Business.   Marco has many outside interests including serving as a youth counselor at his church in Oakland and as a volunteer in the Young Entrepreneurs at Haas program.

Shanita Dionne Talton is a first year planning on majoring in Ethnic Studies and Social Welfare with an emphasis on community, in the hope of becoming an urban community therapist.  A former foster care student, Shanita is part of the Cal Independent Scholars Network and plans to use her experiences in the foster care system to strengthen the community.  This year, Shanita is looking to pledge a sorority and become active in the Black Campus Ministry.

Now, here’s Maureen Nungester, an Administrative Assistant in Procurement Services.  Maureen is active in elder care – helping to care for a senior who needs a little extra help.  She also handcrafts jewelry which she gives to elderly ladies, helping them to feel beautiful and special.

Sabrina is a second year student majoring in Pre‐Business and Theater & Performance Studies.  She is active in a number of theater groups including, the Theater for Charity, and she volunteers at Sulphur Springs Elementary School.

Next up we have Gail Nipitnorasate.  Gail is a fifth year student majoring in Nutritional Science.  Not only does she attend classes and work, but Gail also commits a good deal of her time to volunteering.  She is active in Circle K International and works in Marketing for Cal Dining.

Cindy is a 2007 graduate of the College of Engineering, and works as a Human Resources Specialist.  In addition, Cindy is a competitive ballroom dancer and choreographer.  She has been involved with the UC Ballroom Dance Team for several years, teaching social dancers and coaching competitive couples.

Kellie McElhaney is Executive Director of the Center for Responsible Business and Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Haas School of Business.  Her forthcoming book, Just Good Business, is a strategic guide to aligning corporate responsibility and brand. The Financial Times has ranked the Center for Responsible Business the #1 MBA program in Corporate Social Responsibility in its 2008 rankings.

Jared is a typical, overachieving Cal student.  He is a third year, majoring in Political Economy and minoring in Chinese.  In addition to his studies, he has worked in the Office of Associate Vice Chancellor Ron Coley as a valued staff member, and he also helps to coordinate the Making It Better at Berkeley award program designed to give staff the opportunity to apply for funding to implement their self‐identified process improvements within Business and Administrative Services units.

Dianna is a proud Cal alum, with a BA in Philosophy, an MA in Rhetoric, and a JD in Law.  She is also a single parent who participates in many outreach volunteer programs, serving as a tutor in reading and writing in various schools throughout the Bay Area.  Finally, Dianna works as a volunteer for suicide prevention and on behalf of battered women.

Veronica is a third year majoring in Public Health.  She volunteers at REACH (Asian/Pacific Islander Recruitment and Retention Center.  Not only that, but she was also rider number 6731 on the Cal Aids/Lifecycle Team and participates in ABBA modern – a Christian dance group.

Rishi, a first year majoring  in MCB. Although only a freshman, Rishi plans to continue the cancer research he started in high school.  Also, while still in high school, Rishi founded the Boulder Interact Community Service Club which involves high school students in community service projects.  He was also active in Boy Scouts and volunteered as a cook in a homeless shelter.  We’re glad he chose to come to Cal and that he plans to continue his service activities.  Cal has a long, proud tradition of volunteerism, and Rishi will fit right in!

Karen is a second year majoring in Psychology.  She is a member of the Cal Dance Team and a volunteer ESL tutor at Berkeley High School.

Clara is a second year, majoring in Cognitive Science and is also a member of the Cal Dance Team.  She is an intern at ASTIA, a non‐profit that helps women‐founded technology start‐up companies gain access to funding and business expertise.  Clara is also a Relay for Life captain.  Relay for Life is a 24‐hour walkathon which raises money for the American Cancer Society.

Rachel is a third year majoring in Theater, Dance & Performance Studies.  She is also the historian for Pi Beta Phi sorority and a member of the Cal Dance Team.

Danielle is a typical Cal student with a wide range of interests.  A second year undeclared major, her other interests include cheering on Cal Football as a member of the Cal Dance Team and serving as a volunteer with the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship Association activities.  

Her GB Style Engine purple outfit can be worn as a mini‐dress or over pants or tights.  The black lace up detail at the neckline provides added interest, and the wide gold belt accents a trim waistline.

Elaine, a third year pre‐med student with an intended major in Practice of Art.  She is also on the Cal Dance Team and a member of Movement Dance Group.  

Her black polka dot dress by GB Style Engine is both comfortable and stylish, and will soon be available with a Cal logo.  The fabric is a blend of polyester and organic cotton, which uses 60% less chemicals than other cotton products.

Karisa is a second year majoring in Engineering Physics.  A few of her extra curricular activities include being co‐manager of the UC Women’s Chorale and leadership team chair for her church.
