Tawada CleanTechFabric Duct andCondensation
Overview:
Condensation is important factor to consider Fabric duct system available in permeable and
imperable fabrics Comparing theory and test – no condensation on
fabric duct system?
Fabric Duct- Theory
Theory: impermeable fabrics is comparable to non-insulated metal duct
Temperature gradient for impermeable fabric is very narrow due to natural convection
(cont.) Theory: With permeable fabrics, conditioned air passes
through the fabric and creates a thin layer around the duct wall of tempered air
This boundary prevents the warm, moist room air from contacting the duct wall and generating condensate
Permeable fabric ducts are direct alternative to insulated or double wall metal ducts

Fabric Duct System- Condensation Test
Testes at the Bioenvironmental and Structural Systems (BESS) Laboratory at the University of Illinois
Test: first chamber provided a constant air supply of 300 CFM at 55F and second chamber at 90F
Fabric Duct System- Condensation Test
The test was performed on each of the following samples:
Results - VisualResults – visual (observation of condensation)
Results - WeightWeight – only include moisture weights on surfaceDrippage was not collected or weighed
Results - Temperature
Conlusions
Results reveal a significant reduction in condensation on permeable fabrics
Only mist size droplets and no drippage for impermeable fabrics
Woven exterior of impermeable fabrics reduces risks of drippage
