Dear Smith Alumnae and Friends,

Medieval fortresses, great cathedrals and museums full of masterpieces: All along their courses, the

Mosel, Rhine and Main have much to offer. For centuries these rivers were lined by prosperous states whose

rulers believed in ostentation, which means that even small towns abound in great architecture and, within very

short distances, change and variety are constantly present.

Traveling with us will be a faculty study leader who will share insights through conversation as well as

in scheduled presentations as we discover the marvelous sites along the Mosel, Rhine and Main Rivers.

Our program begins with a day in the fortified capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. See important

17th-century Dutch works at the newly reopened Villa Vauban and tour MUDAM, the new modern art museum

designed by I. M. Pei. Also view contemporary architecture and sculpture by Richard Serra and Frank Stella

before embarking the elegant M.S. AmaLyra in Remich.

Step ashore in Trier, which boasts well-preserved Roman structures including the Porta Nigra (Black

Gate), amphitheater, baths, basilica and the oldest Roman bridge still in use north of the Alps. Continue

through the Mosel Valley, which comes alive during the October harvest season. Famous for its excellent cuisine

and wines, the valley is dotted with villages, such as Rüdesheim and Bernkastel, which will be in a spirit of

celebration. The terraced slopes along the river offer their prized fruit of the vine, and tastings of select wines

will also be festive occasions. Private concerts aboard ship by an invited virtuoso musician will add to our

evening pleasures.

The city of Mainz, with its celebrated Gutenberg Museum; the collections at the Städel Museum in

Frankfurt am Main; the spectacular Schloss Reichsburg and the Baroque palace, the Residenz in Würzburg; the

World Heritage Site of Bamberg — will all be part of our sightseeing.

Please join us aboard M.S. AmaLyra this

autumn for a memorable journey, co-sponsored by

alumni from Harvard University and members of

the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Sincerely,

Carrie Cadwell Brown, Ed.M., ’82
