As a Bilkent Holding company, TEPE BETOPAN established BETOPAN factory in 1984 at Ankara Beytepe Facilities with the name TEPE GROUP as it was called at the time, and pioneered the production of cement-bonded particle boards in TURKEY. In 1999, the factory was renovated using state of the art systems and its capacity was doubled. In 2001, the other Cement-Bonded Particle board factory in ARHAVI was acquired making the Group the sole manufacturer in Turkey, and one of the leading manufacturers in the world with a capacity of 67,500 m3/year. In 2008, the transfer of the production line in Arhavi to our facilities at Bilkent, Ankara unified the production resulting in a stronger production facility and boosting the sales both locally and globally.

Developed by diligent and unrelenting in-house research and development, “BETOPANPLUS” was added in the year 2000 to our product range as a more stable and durable BETOPAN. Thereby, TEPE BETOPAN hailed as a technology developer company by starting the production and sales of BETOPANPLUS along with the “cement-bonded particle board” BETOPAN.

After adding BETOPANPLUS to its product range along with its first product BETOPAN, TEPE BETOPAN launched the “wood-textured YALIPAN” and “stone textured TASONIT” boards.

TEPE BETOPAN, as an entity, made significant contributions to enhancing the quality and, widening the usage range of boards thanks to the dynamism it has drawn from research and development over time and the respect it shows for production, and con-tinues to do so.

1.1 - CEMENT-BONDED PARTICLE BOARD

Cement and wood have been used as two fundamental elements of construction throughout history.

Cement and wood had been used as two separate construction materials until early 1920s. Then studies were started to use a combination of the two, and most of the research activities focused on the determination of the physico-chemical relation between the two items.

Towards the late 1920s, it became a common practice to mix cement with wood chips instead of sand.

By early 1940s, the knowledge required for turning the mixture of cement and wood chips into a board was attained.

In 1940, the first wood fiber boards were manufactured by adding very long fibers to cement and pressing. Subsequently, the panels that were the prototypes of today’s cement-bonded particle boards were manufactured by adding shorter wood fibers to cement.

The first company to manufacture the present cement-bonded particle boards was established in 1967 in Switzerland. Research continued since then aiming to create boards manufactured from versatile, practical, environment-friendly and wholly ecological raw materials.

The 1970s witnessed the erection of cement-bonded particle board factories one after another around the world.

1.2 - CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MATERIAL

Cement-bonded particleboard created by combining the favorable features of wood and cement is a high-quality building material.

Moisture Resistance BETOPAN is the right material required for wet cells and exterior façades for its resistance to moisture.

Water Resistance BETOPAN swells negligibly ( 1.5%) when immersed in water for 24 hours.

Non-molding 1- BETOPAN does not mold due to its moisture resistance. 2- It is resistant to insects and pests. 3- BETOPAN does not host insects and pests due to its cement content.

Fire Resistance (European Classification) Fire resistance standard : TS EN 13501-1Fire : B1Smoke : s1Fall of particles or burning drips : d0

Fire Resistance (UK Classification) It is more resistant to burn than ‘Class 0’ according to the UK Building Regulation, Document B2, Chapter 6. According to this regulation, ‘Class 0’ corresponds to;

Fire : Class B,Smoke : s3Fall of particles or burning drips : d2.

8

As it can be inferred from above; Being better than Class 0 as specified by United Kingdom Building Regulation proves that the material characteristics of BETOPAN boards in European Standards (i.e. B1, s1, d0) are better than many products and rank higher in classifications.

Thermal insulation A BETOPAN layer of 1 cm in thickness provides the same thermal insulation as a 10 cm thick concrete. Thermal insulation provided by a 8.4 cm thick sandwich wall covered with BETOPAN on both surfaces can be equal to that provided by 39 cm thick insulated air bricks.

Crash and Impact Resistance The material has the highest resistance to impact and crash among similar materials.

Machine ProcessibilityBETOPAN allows inserting lamps, opening grooves and bushings; it can be drilled and cut.

LightnessIt is made of a light material. For example, 10 mm thick BETOPAN weighs 13 kg/m2.

Moisture ResistanceThe product swells by 1.5% at maximum when immersed in water for 24 hours. So it exhibits superior resistance features in moist environments compared to other similar materials (e.g. hardboard, MDF, plasterboard, OSB).

Sound Absorption Coefficient: Between 250 Hz - 500 Hz: 0.10Between 1000 Hz - 2000 Hz : 0.30

Resistance to Biological AgentsThanks to its high alkalinity (pH 11-13) and density, BETOPAN is resistant to environmental factors and biological agent. Its susceptibility to fungus and mold was tested in above-the-ground and buried conditions in extremely moist areas. No mold or fungus was detected on boards above the ground; some molding traces were detected on boards after remaining buried under the ground for 8 years. However, this deterioration remains at 0.9 mm thickness on the surface. The insect infestation test conducted in open air revealed that the boards were not affected by insects.

Resistance to Earthquake and ImpactIt owes its tensile strength and impact resistance values to its wood content.

Bending resistance : 9 N/mm2

Elasticity module : 4500 N/mm2

Tensile strength vertical to the surface : 0.5 N/mm2

Fire ResistanceBETOPAN boards are fire resistant.

Movement related to Ambient Moisture and TemperatureWooden material moves depending on the ambient moisture. Similarly, set cement and concrete move as the ambient moisture changes.

The movement rate of BETOPAN is less than that of wood and more than that of set cement. The structure of BETOPAN is much more homogenous than wood, so the movement is also homogenous.

During the applications, BETOPAN boards must be painted with preferably a silicone-based, alkaline-resistant paint. With the impact of paint, linear movement will diminish, but will not be completely eliminated. Thus the boards must be affixed by a method that will allow linear movement.

This will completely prevent formal movements such as hollowing and swelling up of the surface.

APPLICATION OF EXTERIOR FAÇADE WITH MECHANICAL VENTILATION

Insulated and ventilated systems function without thermal bridges or heat loss.

In buildings where Tepe Betopan Façade Siding System is applied, the surface of the building, or the outer surface of the insulation material which is in immediate contact with the building surface, is separated from the siding surface by means of the bearing profile (M Profile). This not only enables maximum ventilation, but also prevents moisture, heat loss or thermal differences (bridges).

3 - ADVANTAGES OF INSULATED AND VENTILATED FAÇADE SYSTEMS

4 - APPLICATION PRINCIPLES FOR EXTERIOR FAÇADE SYSTEMS USING BETOPANPLUS, YALIPAN, AND TASONIT

Betopanplus, Yalıpan, and TASONIT, which are used for cladding the interior walls and exterior façades of all types of building, will protect the façade for many years without causing any loss in the architecture of the building as long as they are used in accordance with the rules recommended by Tepe Betopan.

4.1 - DETECTION OF WALL DEFECTS

Walls to be clad will be tested for their deviations from the horizontal and vertical axis by means of a plumb , water gauge and leveling rope, so that the defects will not continue on the bearing construction. Defects up to 3 cm can be eliminated by the help of the flexible construction material among the bearing construction elements belonging to our products (Picture 1-A)

For deviations larger than 3 cm, a separate frame system (steel box profile, etc.) needs to be constructed. Especially the deviations on the vertical axis in corners are important since they will determine the dimensions of the outer corner accessories.

4.2 - MOUNTING THE INSULATION MATERIAL

If thermal insulation is to be applied to the surface that will be clad, the insulation material must be chosen and applied according to the desired insulation values and specifications before the bearing construction is established. (Picture 1-B)

Thermal insulation boards will remain under the bearing construction; therefore it will be sufficient to affix them to the wall during their assembly. (Picture 1-B)

(Picture 1-A)

(Picture 1-C)

4.3 - FORMING THE BEARING CONSTRUCTION

After the vertical axis deviations on the wall are detected, our products will be fixed to the wall with the bearing construction element M profile and flexible connection elements at appropriate sizes, by leaving 2-3 cm space in the lower end. The affixing procedure is repeated along the M profile at every 80 or 100 cm by using recommended wall plugs and screws. Slots of M profiles must be marked on the wall starting from the spots where accessories will be placed. Vertical axis is checked for one last time (plumb bob) by tightening and loosening the screws marked on the M profiles.

After this check, M profiles and flexible connection elements will be connected to each other by metal sheet screws and the affixation procedure will be completed as such. After the initial and final M profiles are affixed in accordance with the vertical axis, slots of the M profiles that will be situated in between will be marked on the wall with a leveling rope in accordance with the vertical axis. The space between two M profiles should not be more than 75 cm. (Picture 1-C)

4.4 - MOUNTING THE ACCESSORIES

Standard or decorative jamb - head jamb accessory combination manufactured from Betopanplus, Yalıpan and TASONIT can be joined with 45° or 90° angle like in wooden furniture workmanship A small recess created at this joint can hide potential cracks. Accessories should be affixed to the M profile at every 100 cm by means of drywall plug.

4.5 - CUTTING

Betopan (Plain), Yalıpan (Wood-textured), TASONIT (Stone-textured) exterior façade siding materials are manufactured by the factory as boards, strips or in modular dimensions.

Cutting processes that need to be conducted on the worksite must be conducted on portable or stable cutting benches by using HARD STEEL (carbide) or DIAMOND BLADE SAWS.

Since our Plus Group products are more durable and solid, the corners on the edges of the boards may not be smooth after individual cutting. So our company recommends that such edges are finished.

Standard Masks and Goggles should be worn during the cutting process.

24

4.6 - SCREWING

Screwing is easy, however there are certain points that require attention:

First, the screwing slots should be determined and marked on the board that will be assembled.

On the marked slots, body holes will be drilled, and then countersinks will be created with a diameter wider than screw diameter, which enable the screw head to be embedded in the board. Countersinks must enable the screw head to be embedded in the board surface for 2-3 mm.

Excessive force should not be applied in order to fasten the screw during the screwing process. Such excessive pressure not only runs the risk of cracking the board, but also causes the screw to get jammed and prevent the movement of the boards.

Screws must be inserted vertically to the surface during the screwing process.

Screwing must be performed according to dimensions. For example in a siding application, on a strip of 12 x 175 x 3000 mm dimensions; 20 drywall screws will be used in every 1 m2. On the vertical axis, 2 screws will be placed at a distance of 20-30 mm from the edges. On the horizontal axis, 1 screw at every 600 mm (max) will be inserted at the slots corresponding to M profiles.

4.7 - PAINTING

After the assembly of accessories and boards is completed, screw heads will be concealed with polyester steel paste by using a spatula. It is important to use an appropriate amount of paste since excess amounts can cause cracking.

Pasted slots must be sanded with a thin sand paper. Polyurethane based grouting material can be used in order to fill some spaces that may be created during the application.

Accessories and boards can be painted by alkaline–resistant, acrylic-based exterior façade paint. In order to increase the resistance of paint to exterior conditions, the surface must be cleaned from dust and a single layer primer must be applied before painting.

Alkaline-resistant, silicone-added or pure acrylic paint should be used for painting the accessories.

Paints to be used on other surfaces are not different than those applied on concrete surfaces. Different effects can be obtained by applying different painting methods on the materials. Pasting and painting process must not be conducted at ambient temperatures below +5°.

The weather should not be rainy, or the surface must have been dry and relieved from the water it absorbed during the rain before painting.

Instructions by the paint manufacturer should also be observed.

33

Yalıpan is the wood-textured form of Betopanplus. The middle layer is manufactured from wood, cement and harmless chemical additives, whereas the outer layers do not include wood particles, but only include inorganic material. Thanks to its superior structural qualities attained by combining the lightness, elasticity, elasticity and processibility of wood with the features of cement and minerals such as resistance to water, moisture, decay and fire(Euroclass Fire Rating A2, s1, d0) ; Yalıpan is a modern, widely used, and durable construction material resistant to earthquake and fire. The more durable layers on its surface which prevent movement, increase its resistance to external factors and increases the adhesion of paint. It can be used in exterior sidings of all types of buildings, and also for decorative purposes in interior spaces.

6.1 - GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

It provides perfect sound and thermal insulation. It has increased paint adhesion. It does not swell in water, nor does it mold. Both surfaces have increased resistance against the effects of

weather and scratching. It is not affected by moisture. It is not plastic. It is highly resistant to impact and wind. It does not accommodate insects. It is not affected by heat variations. It is stable. It is environment-friendly. It is fire resistant (Euroclass Fire Rating A2, s1, d0). It does not release formaldehyde. It can be easily and quickly mounted. It does not contain asbestos. It has real wood texture.

6.2 - ADVANTAGES

Yalıpan reduces air-conditioning costs of the building in hot and cold weather (up to 55%) and offers up to 70% fuel saving thanks to its insulation and ventilation system.

Yalıpan protects façades of buildings against heat variations, rain, frost, wind and fire (Euroclass Fire Rating A2, s1, d0).

Since it can be painted, it allows color change due to transfer of property in time, or architectural preferences.

It allows easy demounting and remounting during repair works to be conducted on façades of buildings.

It is resistant to natural disasters such as earthquakes and other impacts causing movement in the building because the load is equally distributed to the whole building by means of fur wall plugs and vibration-compliant, flexible and galvanized metal sheets are used.

It solves all problems related to water and relative humidity thanks to the breathing and ventilated mounting system.

It does not make noise due to wind.

AREAS OF APPLICATION

Façades of buildings, Soffit and fascia cladding, For decorative purposes in interior spaces, Façades of prefabricated buildings, In buildings with light or heavy steel construction.

IMPORTANT POINTS REGARDING CLASSICAL LAP SIDING SYSTEM

If thermal insulation is to be applied on the surface to be sided, it should be applied before the mounting of the bearing construction. It will be sufficient to affix the thermal insulation boards on the wall before mounting the bearing construction since they will remain below the bearing construction.

Walls to be clad will be tested for their deviations from the horizontal and vertical axis by means of a plumb bob, water gauge and leveling rope, so that the defects will not continue on the bearing construction. Defects up to 3 cm can be eliminated by the help of bearing construction elements of Betopan. For deviations larger than 3 cm, a separate frame system (steel box profile, etc.) needs to be constructed by box profiles.

Yalıpan jamb-head jamb accessories must be cut at 45° angle on the edges and joined at 45° like in wooden furniture workmanship. This process will be conducted by exercising with the accessories at an appropriate place other than the siding surface. Joined parts are stabilized by aluminum corner profile, and marked on M profiles by means of drywall screws.

Yalıpan strips are mounted starting from the lowest row after the assembly of the bearing construction and accessories.

Yalıpan strips will be affixed to M profiles by means of drywall screws. It is recommended to join the ends of strips at different spots in each row. In the second row of affixation, the other wing of the M profile is used so that strips pulling the profile in opposite directions are not tied to the same point at the bottom and the top. Spots corresponding to end joints are excluded from this rule.

Drywall screws are inserted at 2 cm distance under the upper edge of Yalıpan strip. For this reason, the visible surface of Yalıpan strips is maximum 15 cm. This distance can be reduced in door and window slots.
