August 30, 2017

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Over the past few days, we have heard and witnessed many heartbreaking stories and images from areas affected by Hurricane Harvey. The damage caused by the storm and flooding has been catastrophic, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, destroyed homes and businesses, and thousands of displaced people seeking shelter. Intense rainfall will continue in Texas and Louisiana throughout the next few days, causing further harm. During this time of great need, I invite you to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Gulf Coast region. All parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago will take up a second collection at all Masses on Saturday, September 9 and Sunday, September 10. Proceeds from this special collection will support the humanitarian and recovery efforts of Catholic Charities USA and provide support to affected dioceses through the USCCB. Your generous support of this collection will make a difference to our brothers and sisters suffering in the wake of this natural disaster. It is my prayer that as we renew our own archdiocese, we support the renewal of Gulf Coast Catholic communities that will grapple with its effects for many months to come. With every good wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Cardinal Blase J. Cupich Archbishop of Chicago H

Sunday Reflection...

Readings of the Week Monday: 1 Thes 4:13-18; Ps 96:1,  3-5, 11-13; Lk 4:16-30, or, for Labor  Day, readings from the Mass “For the Blessing of Human Labor,” nos. 907-911 Tuesday: 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11; Ps 27:1, 4, 1314; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday: Col 1:1-8; Ps 52: 10-11; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday: Col 1:9-14; Ps 98:2-6; Lk 5:1-11 Friday: Mi 5:1-4a or Rom 8:28-30; Ps 13:6 Mt 1:1-16, 18-23 [18-23] Saturday: Col 1:21-23; Ps 54:3-4, 6, 8; Lk 6:1-5 Sunday: Ez 33:7-9; Ps 95:1-2, 6-9; Rom 13:8-10; Mt 18:15-20

FIRST READING: Jeremiah 20:7–9 RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 63:2, 3–4, 5–6, 8–9 SECOND READING: Romans 12:1–2 GOSPEL: Matthew 16:21–27

Comment Jeremiah was more than a little annoyed with God. Jeremiah hated having to tell God’s message. He was persecuted and tortured because of it. But, for Jeremiah, torture was better than disobeying God. Paul continued the same plea of Jeremiah in his letter to the Romans. The Romans, too, formed values of worldly and temporal nature. In his writings, Paul urged the Romans to change their values—to make them more in harmony with the directions of God. He asked the people to live in a way contrary to what society dictated—to be hospitable to strangers, to associate with the lowly, to feed their hungry enemies. Matthew wrote to the Jewish community of his time telling them to take up the cross and follow Jesus. This meant to let go of the ways and values of the world. To follow Jesus, we must give up our lives for Jesus. We will gain the whole world, a world we cannot fully comprehend, if we give up our lives for Jesus.

Reflection Have you ever thought about how difficult it would be to be a prophet? George Burns as God in the movie Oh, God! was enough for me to know the world is a tough audience! The character played by John Denver was a laughingstock and so was Jeremiah. Both were chosen to convey the message to the world that just because “everyone was doing ‘it,’” didn’t make “it” right. Most likely, each of us at some point in our lives has taken a stand that goes against popular opinion. But the cause was something worth risking peer disapproval. Some parents may hold firm to which movies their children can see despite the fact that other parents have relaxed their restrictions. We may march in a pro-life parade even though some people will shout and gesture their criticism. Many advertisers promote self-indulgence telling us we deserve to pamper ourselves and lavish ourselves with luxury. It takes unselfishness to resist those lures and care for someone else before we take care of ourselves.

To carry a cross and deny ourselves the pleasures the world has to offer, often brings about sad emotions and long faces. It sounds hard and harsh, depressing and negative. Perhaps the challenge of “carrying our cross” is more in how we view the obligation rather than the task itself.

Worldliness One of my jogging routes takes me past a major intersection. One night as I ran, I saw a northbound motorcycle driver approach the intersection. His passenger’s long hair flowed carelessly back in the wind. The light changed to yellow. An eastbound car approached the intersection. Neither one took the caution light seriously. Less than a block earlier, the young motorcycle driver and his fiancée had a future filled with wedding plans, jobs, the hope of a family and home. In an instant, their world was gone. The critically injured young woman mourned the death of her husband-to-be. We have all experienced events in our lives that indicate how fleeting this life is. In an instant everything changes. For this reason, we need to put our trust and faith in the next world, where things will be as they have been promised. .

Stewardship Month of July, 2017

“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?” - MATTHEW 16:26 St. Francis of Assisi once said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.” We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend all of our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We need to set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world. Eucharistic Adoration This Tuesday, September 5th, there will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament starting right after the 8:15 A.M Mass and ending with Benediction at 7:30 P.M. The sign up chart is in the vestibule this weekend. Please plan on making a Holy Hour. The open time slots are 3:00 and 3:30 P.M. Eucharistic Adoration is the source and summit of our faith. Give God the best gift you can - your time and your company. Temptation becomes easier to resist when you spend time in Adoration. "Our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Him." —St. Augustine
