WARNING

Danger of black ice evenabove 37 °C (3 °C), despitethe lack of ice warning.Risk of accident due to black ice.

At a low outside temperature,icy conditions must expectedon bridges and in shady roadareas.

Think well ahead when driving.

Electronic immobilizer isactive

General warning light showsyellow.

+ "EWS" is indicated.

Possible cause:The key being used is not autho-rized for starting, or communica-tion between the key and engineelectronics is disrupted.

Remove other motorcycle keysfrom the ignition key ring.Use the reserve key.Have the defective key re-placed, preferably by an autho-rized BMW Motorrad retailer.

Coolant temperature toohigh

General warning light showsred.

Temperature symbolflashes.

ATTENTION

Riding with overheated en-gine.Engine damage

Be sure to observe the mea-sures listed below.

Possible cause:Coolant level is too low.

Check coolant level ( 94).If coolant level is too low:

Have the coolant level refilledand the coolant systemchecked at a specialist servicefacility, preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad retailer.

Possible cause:The coolant temperature is toohigh.

If possible, continue drivingin the part-load range to cooldown the engine.Should the coolant temperaturefrequently be too high, havethe coolant system checked asquickly as possible by a spe-cialist service facility, preferablyan authorized BMW Motorradretailer.

Engine in emergency-operation mode

WARNING

Unusual handling when en-gine is no emergency operat-ing mode.Accident hazard

Adapt your style of riding ac-cordingly.Avoid rapid acceleration andpassing maneuvers.

Possible cause:The engine control unit has di-agnosed a fault. In exceptionalcases, the engine stops and canno longer be started. Otherwise,the engine runs in the emer-gency operating mode.

Continued driving is possible,however the accustomed en-gine performance may not beavailable.Have the malfunction correctedas soon as possible at an au-thorized workshop, preferablyan authorized BMW Motorradretailer.

Bulb defectiveGeneral warning light showsyellow.

+ "LAMP" is indicated.

WARNING

Overlooking the motorcy-cle in traffic due to the lightsource on the motorcyclefailing.Safety risk

Replace defective bulbs assoon as possible; it is bestalways to carry a completeset of spare bulbs on themotorcycle.

Possible cause:Bulb defective.

Locate defective bulb with vi-sual check.Replacing low-beam and/orhigh-beam bulb ( 105).Replacing bulb for parking light( 106).Replacing brake light and taillight bulbs ( 108).

Possible cause:The anti-theft alarm system bat-tery has no capacity. The oper-ation of the anti-theft alarm sys-tem is no longer ensured withthe vehicle battery disconnected.

Contact a specialist service fa-cility, preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad retailer.

Tire inflation pressure inlimit area of permissibletolerance

Possible cause:The measured tire inflation pres-sure is in the limit area of thepermissible tolerance.

Before adjusting the tire inflationpressure, observe the informationon temperature compensationand on inflation pressure adjust-ment in the chapter "Technologyin detail".

Possible cause:The battery of the tire inflationpressure sensor has almost nocapacity anymore. The operationof the tire inflation pressure con-trol is only ensured for a limitedtime.

Contact a specialist service fa-cility, preferably an authorizedBMW Motorrad retailer.

Transmission errorwith Tire Pressure Control(TPC/RDC)OE

+ "--" or "-- --" is in-dicated.

Possible cause:The vehicle's speed has not ex-ceeded the threshold of approx.19 mph (30 km/h). The RDCsensors do not transmit theirsignal until a speed above thisthreshold is reached ( 85).

Watch the RDC display athigher speed. A permanent

fault has not occurred untilthe general warning lamp alsolights up. In this case:Have fault eliminated by a spe-cialist service facility, preferablyan authorized BMW Motorradretailer.

Fuel reserveThe fuel level at which the re-serve warning light actually lightsup will vary according to dynamicriding conditions: substantial in-tank fuel motion (from frequentchanges in lean angles whencornering, frequent braking andacceleration) makes it more diffi-cult for the system to determinewhen the fuel falls to the reservelevel. However, the quantity indi-cated as the fuel reserve on therear cover represents the mini-mum in the tank when the lampinitially lights up.


After the fuel warning lightis switched on, the distance

driven since this point in time isindicated.

The distance that can still betraveled with the fuel reservedepends on the riding style (onthe consumption) and on the fuelquantity that was still available atthe time of switch-on (see previ-ous explanation).The trip distance recorder forthe fuel reserve is reset whenthe fuel quantity after refueling isgreater than the fuel reserve.

Service display

If the time remaining until thenext service will elapse withinone month, the service date 1

appears briefly following the pre-ride check. The month and yearare shown with two and four dig-its respectively separated by acolon. In this example the displaymeans "June 2014".

If the vehicle covers high annualmileages then shorter service in-tervals may be required. Whenthe odometer reading for the re-calculated early service falls towithin 621 miles (1000 km), theremaining miles (kilometers) 1are counted down in 62-miles(100-km) steps. They are briefly

When a service dateelapses without service, the

universal warning lamp lights upin yellow, appearing together withthe date and mileage (kilometer)display. The "Service" messageis displayed continuously.

NOTICE

If the service display appearsmore than a month before theservice date, the stored datemust be adjusted in the instru-ment cluster. (3 °C) the temperature displayresponds by flashing a warningindicating possible ice formationon the road surface. Overviewwith anti-theft alarm OE

General information onDWAAny attempt to move the motor-cycle, change its position, start itwithout authorization or discon-nect the motorcycle battery, re-sults in the alarm being triggered.The sensitivity of the system isdesigned so that minor vibrationsof the motorcycle do not triggeran alarm. Each theft attempt issignaled following activation ofthe system acoustically with thesiren and optically with synchro-nized flashing of all 4 turn indica-tors.You can adjust the behavior ofyour DWA in partial areas tomeet your needs.

Protection of motorcyclebatteryTo protect the motorcycle bat-tery and to maintain the start-ing capability, the activated DWAswitches off automatically afterseveral days. However, it remainsactive for at least 10 days.

Radio interferenceRadio systems or devices whichtransmit on the same frequencyas the remote control of theDWA can interfere with its func-tion. With corresponding prob-lems point the remote control atthe motorcycle from a differentdirection.

Activation with motionsensor

The alarm function will be acti-vated

Activation phaseThe anti-theft alarm system re-quires 15 seconds until it is com-pletely activated. No alarm trig-gering takes place during thistime.

Protection of the batteryin the control unit (anti-theft alarm systemactivated)

If the alarm function is to be acti-vated after the ignition has beenswitched off for more than oneminute, then the button 1 mustbe pressed for longer than onesecond. After approx. one hourin the deactivated state, the DWAswitches off to protect the bat-tery. To activate the alarm func-tion after this period, the ignitionmust be switched on and thenoff again.

Motion sensor whentransporting themotorcycleIf, for example, the motorcycleis to be transported by train, it isadvisable to switch off the motionsensor. The strong movementscould result in an accidental trig-gering of the alarm.

This functiondoes not change the state of theanti-theft alarm system.During the alarm, an alarm tonesounds and the turn indicatorsflash. The type of alarm soundcan be programmed.

remote control and the ignitionthen not switched on, the alarm

function is automatically reacti-vated after 30 seconds if "Acti-vation after ignition off" has beenprogrammed.

When is a battery changerequired?The batteries of the remote con-trol must be replaced after ap-prox. 2 - 3 years. A weak batterycan be recognized from the factthat the LED does not light up atall or only briefly when a button ispressed.

Pre-Ride CheckWhen the ignition is switched onthe instrument cluster performs atest routine including the analogdisplay instruments as well as thewarning and indicator lights - thisis the "Pre-Ride-Check." Startingthe engine before the test rou-tine is completed will cancel theremainder of the routine.

Phase 1The needles on the tachometerand speedometer rotate to theirend positions. Simultaneously allwarning and indicator lights areactivated sequentially.

Phase 2The universal warning lampchanges from yellow to red.

Engine speed warningwith onboard computerOE

Engine speed warning

The engine speed warning sig-nals to the rider that the redengine speed range has beenreached. This signal is shown inred by the flashing of indicatorlamp 1.The signal is maintained until thetransmission is upshifted or theengine speed is reduced. It canbe activated or deactivated bythe rider.

BrakesHow do you achievethe shortest stoppingdistances?The dynamic load distribution be-tween the front and rear wheelchanges during braking. Theheavier you brake, the greaterthe weight transfer to the frontwheel. Increases in the load atan individual wheel are accom-panied by a rise in the effectivebraking force that the wheel canprovide.To achieve the shortest possiblebraking distance, the front brakemust be applied quickly and withincreasing force. This procedureprovides ideal exploitation of theextra weight transfer to the frontwheel. The clutch should also bedisengaged at the same time.

With the "forced braking" of-ten practiced in which the brakepressure is generated as quicklyas possible and with great force,the dynamic load distributioncannot follow the increased de-celeration and the braking forcecannot be completely transferredto the road surface.

Descending mountainpasses

WARNING

Braking only with the rear-wheel brake when descend-ing mountain passes.Loss of braking action. Destruc-tion of the brakes caused byoverheating.

Brake system withBMW Motorrad ABSHow does the ABS work?The maximum braking force thatcan be transferred to the roadsurface is partially dependent onthe friction coefficient of the roadsurface. Gravel, ice, snow andwet roads offer a considerablylower friction coefficient than adry, clean asphalt surface. Thepoorer the friction coefficient ofthe road surface is, the longerthe braking distance will be.If the maximum transferable brak-ing force is exceeded when therider increases the brake pres-sure, the wheels begin to lockand driving stability is lost, anda fall can result. Before this sit-uation occurs, ABS is activatedand the brake pressure is ad-justed to the maximum transfer-able braking force. This enablesthe wheels to continue to turn

and maintains driving stability re-gardless of the road surface con-dition.

What happens whenrough roads areencountered?Rough roads can briefly lead toa loss of contact between thetires and the road surface. Thetransferable braking force is thenreduced to zero. If braking is car-ried out in this situation, ABSmust reduce the brake pressureto ensure driving stability whenrestoring contact to the road.At this point in time, ABS mustassume extremely low frictioncoefficients (gravel, ice, snow)so that the wheels turn in everyimaginable case and driving sta-bility is ensured. After detectingthe actual conditions, the systemadjusts the optimum brake pres-sure.

Lifting off rear wheelDuring extremely heavy and rapiddecelerations it is possible thatthe ABS cannot prevent the rearwheel from lifting off the ground.In these cases, the motorcyclecan also flip end over end.

When braking heavily, bear inmind that the ABS control can-not always be relied on to pre-vent the rear wheel from liftingoff the ground.

timized for special requirementsresulting under extreme weatherconditions offroad or on the race-track.

Special situationsTo detect the tendency of thewheels to lock up, the speedsof the front and rear wheel arecompared. If implausible valuesare detected over a longer periodof time, the ABS function is de-activated for safety reasons andan ABS error is indicated. A self-diagnosis routine must be com-pleted before the error will bedisplayed.Unusual driving conditions canlead to a fault code as well:

Driving on the rear wheel(wheelie) for a longer period.Rear wheel spinning in placewith front brake engaged (burnout).

Warm-up on the center or aux-iliary stand at idle or with gearengaged.Locked-up rear wheel for alonger period of time, e.g.when riding downhill offroad.

Should a fault code occur due toan unusual driving condition, theABS function can be reactivatedby switching the ignition off andthen on again.

How important is regularmaintenance?

To ensure that the ABS is ina properly maintained condi-tion, it is vital that the specifiedservice intervals be observed.

Reserves for safetyBut remember: the potentiallyshorter braking distances whichBMW Motorrad ABS permitsmust not be used as an excusefor careless riding. ABS is pri-marily a means of ensuring asafety margin in genuine emer-gencies.

Engine managementwith BMW MotorradASC

How does the ASC work?BMW Motorrad ASC comparesthe wheel speeds of the frontand rear wheel. From the speeddifference the slip, and with itthe stability reserves on the rearwheel are determined. When aslip limit is exceeded, the enginetorque is adapted by the enginemanagement system.

What are the designcharacteristics of theBMW Motorrad ASC?BMW Motorrad ASC is designedas an assistant system for therider for the use on public roads.The extent to which the rider af-fects ASC control can be consid-

erable (weight shifts when cor-nering, items of luggage loose onthe motorcycle), especially whenstyle of riding takes rider and ma-chine close to the limits imposedby physics.The system is not optimized forspecial requirements resultingunder extreme weather condi-tions offroad or on the racetrack.BMW Motorrad ASC can be de-activated for these cases.

The rider is always responsi-ble for adapting his/her drivingstyle.Do not reduce the system's ex-tra safety margin with carelessriding or unnecessary risks.

Special situationsAs lean angles increase, accel-eration potential is also progres-sively restricted by the laws ofphysics. This can result in de-layed acceleration when comingout of very tight curves.

To detect spinning or slippingaway of the rear wheel, thespeeds of the front andrear wheel are compared. Ifimplausible values are detectedover a longer period of time, theASC function is deactivated forsafety reasons and an ASC erroris indicated. The condition for afault code is the completed self-diagnosis.The following unusual drivingconditions may lead to automaticdeactivation of BMW MotorradASC:

Driving on the rear wheel(wheelie) for a longer periodwith ASC deactivated.Rear wheel spinning in placewith front brake engaged (burnout).Heating up on the main or aux-iliary stand at idle or with gearengaged.

ASC is reactivated by switchingthe ignition on and off and thendriving at a speed above 3 mph(5 km/h).

If the front wheel loses contactto the ground during extremeacceleration, the ASC reducesthe engine torque until the frontwheel touches the ground again.In this case, BMW Motorrad rec-ommends turning back the throt-tle grip somewhat to achievea stable driving state again asquickly as possible.

On a slippery surface, the throttlegrip must never be suddenlyturned back completely withoutpulling the clutch at the sametime. The engine braking torquecan cause the rear wheel toblock, resulting in an unstabledriving state. This case cannotbe controlled by BMW MotorradASC.

Tire pressure control(RDC)


OperationA sensor located in each tiremonitors the air temperature andthe inflation pressure inside thetire and transmits this informationto the control unit.

The sensors are equipped witha centrifugal controller, whichdoes not enable the transmis-sion of the measured valuesuntil a speed of approx. 18.5mph (30 km/h) is reached. Thedisplay shows "--" for eachtire until the tire-pressure sig-nal is received for the first time.The sensors continue to transmitthe measured values for approx.15 minutes after the motorcyclecomes to a stop.

TemperaturecompensationThe tire inflation pressure is tem-perature dependent, i.e. it in-creases or decreases togetherwith the tire air temperature. Thetire air temperature is dependenton the ambient temperature andon the driving style and duration.

The tire inflation pressures areshown temperature-compensatedin the multifunction display. Theyrefer to a tire air temperature of68 °F (20 °C). No temperaturecompensation takes place in theinflation pressure testers at fill-ing stations. The measured tireinflation pressure is dependenton the tire air temperature. As aresult, in most cases the valuesdisplayed there do not match thevalues shown in the multifunctiondisplay.

Adjusting inflationpressureCompare the RDC value in themultifunction display with thevalue on the back cover of theRider's Manual. The differencebetween the two values must becompensated with the air pres-sure tester at the filling station.

Example: According to theRider's Manual, the tire inflationpressure is to be 36 psi (2.5 bar),however 33 psi (2.3 bar) isshown in the multifunctiondisplay. The tester at thefilling station indicates 34.8 psi(2.4 bar). This value must beincreased by 3 psi (0.2 bar) to37.8 psi (2.6 bar) in order toproduce the correct tire inflationpressure.

Affect of wheel size onABSWheel sizes greatly affect thefunction of the ABS system. Es-pecially the diameter and widthof the wheels are stored in the

control unit as the basis for allnecessary calculations. A changein these sizes due to conversionto wheels not installed as stan-dard equipment can seriously af-fect the control comfort of thesesystems.The sensor rings required forwheel speed detection must alsomatch the control systems in-stalled and may not be replaced.If you want to equip yourmotorcycle with different wheels,please speak to a specialistservice facility, and preferably aBMW Motorrad retailer. In somecases the data stored in thecontrol units can be adapted tothe new wheel sizes.

Onboard socketsConnection of electricaldevices

Additional devices connectedto onboard sockets can onlybe put into operation when theignition is switched on.

Cable routingThe cables from the onboardsockets to the auxiliary devicesmust be routed in such a waythat they do not impede therider.Cable routing must not restrictthe steering angle and the han-dling characteristics.Cables must not be trapped.

Automatic switch-offThe onboard sockets are au-tomatically switched off duringstarting.These sockets are switchedoff approx. 15 minutes after

switching off the ignition to re-duce the strain on the onboardelectrical system. Additionaldevices with low power con-sumption are possibly not de-tected by the vehicle electron-ics. In these cases, onboardsockets are already switchedoff shortly after the ignition isswitched off.In case of insufficient batteryvoltage, the onboard socketsare switched off to maintain theability to start the motorcycle.If the maximum loadabilityspecified in the technical datais exceeded, the onboardsockets are switched off.

Paint careWashing the vehicle regularlyprevents paint damage, especiallyif your vehicle is ridden in areaswith high air pollution or naturalsources of dirt, e.g. tree resin orpollen.However, remove particularlyaggressive substances (spilledfuel, oil grease, brake fluid aswell as bird droppings) immedi-ately; otherwise changes in thepaint or discolorations may occur.BMW Motorrad recommendsBMW Car Polish or BMW PaintCleaner for this purpose.Contamination on the paint finishis particularly easy to see afterthe vehicle has been washed.Remove this type of soiling withcleaning naphtha or spirit on aclean cloth or cotton ball. BMW Running-in CheckThe BMW running-in checkmust be carried out between300 mls and 750 mls (500 kmand 1200 km).

BMW ServiceBMW service is carried out oncea year. The scope of the ser-vices performed may be depen-dent on the motorcycle ownerand the mileage driven. YourBMW Motorrad retailer confirmsthat the service has been per-formed and enters the date forthe next service.For riders who drive long dis-tances annually, it may be neces-sary to come in for service beforethe entered date. In this case acorresponding maximum odome-ter reading will also be entered inthe confirmation of service. If thisodometer reading is reached be-fore the next service date, servicemust be performed sooner.

The service display in the multi-function display reminds you ofthe next service date approx. onemonth or 620 miles (1,000 km)before the entered values.
