AIR CLEANER MONITOR

The optional W8600F Air CleanerMonitor may be added to your aircleaner system to provide convenientindication of system performance. TheW8600F must be ordered seperately.

The W8600F is designed to mount nextto your thermostat, or in any convenientlocation (such as a utility room) where itcan be seen as it monitors the aircleaner's performance.

The four Liquid Crystal Display (LCD)indicators are labeled ON, BATTERY,SERVICE and FAULT.

• The ON indicator is active duringnormal air cleaning operation. The system fan is also on when the aircleaner is running.

• The BATTERY indicator is active when the W8600F battery is low.

• The SERVICE indicator is active when it is time to wash the aircleaner prefilters and cells. The time between cleanings is enteredinto the W8600F at installation. To turn the SERVICE indicator off, press the Reset button located at the bottom right of the W8600F.

• The FAULT indicator is active when there is extreme dirt loading, electronic malfunction, constant arcing or other problems with thehigh voltage output of the air cleaner power supply.

When the fan and air cleaner come on, the neonindicator lights.

If your air cleaner is equipped with a wall-mounted W8600F Air Cleaner Monitor (see page2), the ON indicator will be active whenever theair cleaner is in operation. Of course, the systemfan will also be running.

Set the ON-OFF switch in the power box to ON.

NOTE: Depress 1 for ON, 0 for OFF.

The air cleaner will now operate whenever yourfurnace/air conditioning system fan operates. Formaximum air cleaning benefit and cleaner airconditioner coils, leave the air cleaner switch ONat all times and the fan switch on your thermostatON. Of course, continuous fan operation will addto your electric bill each month.

You may hear a snapping (electrical arcing)sound occasionally as the air cleaner operates. This usually is caused by a larger dust particlecausing a high voltage discharge. The snappingsound means that your air cleaner is working as itshould. To hear the snapping sound, momentarilypress the test button near the bottom of the door.Use the test button any time you want to proveair cleaner operation.

When the fan and air cleaner stops, the neonlight goes out, as does the ON indicator on theW8600F. The air cleaner is off until the heating orair conditioning and fan start again.

If you don’t want the air cleaner to run, set theON-OFF switch to OFF to turn off the air cleaner.Your furnace and air conditioner will still operatenormally, but without the added benefit of aircleaning. Normally, this switch should be ON atall times.

For greatest benefit, the air cleaner should runall the time. To do this, set the fan switch onyour thermostat to ON, and make sure the aircleaner is switched ON. The fan and air cleanerwill run even when the furnace or air conditioneris off.

NOTE: A manual fan switch may be built intothe furnace or furnace fan controller.

The air cleaner uses less power than a 40 wattlight bulb (two-cell model—33 watts; single cellmodel—22 watts). The cost of running thesystem fan will vary with the size of your fanmotor and the cost of electricity where you live. Most air cleaner owners feel that the added costis more than offset by the added benefits of fulltime air cleaning and full time air circulation. You may feel that the room temperature staysmore even when the fan is always on.

Although the air cleaner is designed to beefficient over a wide range of cell dirt loadingconditions, regular cleaning is your bestassurance of consistent performance. Also, avery dirty cell and prefilter reduces air flow and,in turn, reduces the efficiency of the furnace orair conditioner. The cell wash reminder sched-ule or the optional W8600F Air Cleaner Monitorshould be used to maintain a regular washschedule.

An activated carbon (charcoal) filter is some-times installed downstream of the air cleaner tohelp control odors. This filter should be changedat least annually, or as recommended by thefilter manufacturer. Honeywell does not offercarbon filters for this application.

Replace anyactivated carbonfilters in theductworkregularly

If your system includes an atomizing humidifier, you may want to install a standard furnace filterbetween the humidifier and the air cleaner. Thisfilter would keep the humidifier spray’s mineraldeposits from collecting on the air cleaner. Thisfilter should be checked regularly and changedwhen it shows signs of mineral or dirt buildup. Ifyou do not install a filter, you will probably needto wash the cells and prefilters more often toremove the mineral buildup.

If an ultrasonic room humidifier is used often, especially if filled with tap (undistilled) water, thecells and prefilters will require more frequentwashing. A white residue will accumulate on thecells from the minerals in the water. Thisresidue may also contribute to "white dust"(see p. 17).

All Honeywell whole house humidifiers may beused in a system with the Honeywell ElectronicAir Cleaner without any additional filters orsystem modification.

CAUTIONSharp edges. Can cause personal injury.Carefully handle the cells or wear protectivegloves to avoid cuts from the sharp metaledges.

To ensure optimum performance from the aircleaner, the cells and prefilters must becleaned regularly—every one to six months.Washing frequency will vary depending on thenumber of family members, pets, activities(such as cooking or woodshop) and smokinghabits. Use the wash reminder schedule thatcame with the air cleaner or the optionalW8600F Air Cleaner Monitor to help establishand maintain a regular cleaning schedule.Mount the wash reminder schedule in aconvenient location.

CAUTIONBurn hazard. Can cause personal injury.Allow the cells to cool completely in thedishwasher at the end of the wash cycle orwear protective gloves to avoid burns. Hotwater can accumulate in the tubes supportingthe collector plates. Tip the cells so these tubeswill drain.

IMPORTANT• Check your dishwasher owner’s manual.

Some manufacturers do not recommendwashing electronic cells in theirdishwashers.

• If the dishwasher has upper and lowerarms, position the cells carefully to allowgood water circulation.

• Be careful to avoid damaging the cellswhen placing them in the dishwasher.Broken ionizer wires or bent collectorplates are not covered under thewarranty.

• Very dirty cells, especially from tobacco orcooking smoke, can discolor the plasticparts and the lining of some dishwashers. This discoloration is not harmful. Tominimize it, wash the cells more fre-quently or try a different brandof detergent.

• Do NOT allow the dishwasher to runthrough the dry cycle. This will bakeon any contaminants not removedduring the wash cycle and reduce aircleaner efficiency.

Washingthe cellsin yourautomaticdishwasher

NOTE: You may let the heating or air condi-tioning system operate normally whilethe cells are being washed. Simply turnoff the air cleaner switch.

Vacuum the prefilter or brush, or soak it in atub. Do not wash the prefilter in the dishwasheror carwash.

STEP 1 Put the cells on the lower rack of the dish-washer with the airflow arrow pointing up. It maybe necessary to remove the upper rack. Do notblock water flow to the upper arm.

HINT: Lay a few large water glasses betweenthe spikes on the lower rack, and rest thecells on them so the spikes do not damagethe aluminum collector blades.

STEP 2 Using your regular dishwashing detergent, allowthe dishwasher to run through the completewash and rinse cycle. Do not use the drycycle. To avoid burns, let the cells coolcompletely before removing, or wear protectivegloves when removing the cells. Remember thatwater may be trapped inside the cells plates.Tip the cells so these tubes can drain.

STEP 3 Wipe the ionizer wires and contact board on theend of the cell using your thumb and forefingerwith a small, damp cloth.

STEP 4 Inspect the dishwasher. You may wish to rerunthe wash and/or rinse cycle with the dishwasherempty if you see dirt or residue from washingthe cells. If dirt or residue seems excessive, wash the cells more often or try a differentdetergent.

Washingthecells ina tub

NOTE: Always wash the cells first, then theprefilters, to keep heavy prefilter lintfrom getting caught in the cells.

CAUTIONHazardous chemical.Can cause personal injury.

• Do not splash the detergent solution ineyes. Wear rubber gloves to avoidprolonged detergent contact with your skin.

• Keep detergent and solution out of reachof children.

STEP 1 Use a large enough container, such as alaundry tub or trash container, to hold one orboth cells.

NOTE: Sharp corners on the cells can scratchthe surface of a bathtub.

STEP 2 Dissolve about 3/4 cup of automatic dishwasherdetergent per cell in enough hot water to coverthe cells. If the detergent does not dissolvereadily, or forms a scum on the water, tryanother brand, or use softened water.

STEP 3 After the detergent has completely dissolved, place the cells in the container and let soak for15 to 20 minutes. Agitate them up and down afew times, and remove.

STEP 4 Next, wash the prefilters the same way. Emptyand rinse the wash container.

STEP 5 Rinse the cells and prefilters with a hard sprayof very hot water; rinse the tub clean, then fillthe tub with clean hot water and soak for 5 to 15minutes. Rinse until the water draining from thecells and prefilters no longer feels slippery.

STEP 6 Soak cells and prefilters in a final clear waterrinse for 10 minutes.

STEP 7 Wipe the ionizer wires and contact board on theend of the cell using your thumb and forefingerwith a small, damp cloth.

Use the hand sprayer at a coin-operated do-it-yourself car wash to wash the cells. Hold thenozzle at least two feet away from the unit toavoid damage (such as broken ionizer wires orbent collector plates) from the high pressurestream of water. Follow the same sequence ofwash and rinse as recommended for cars. However, do not wax the cells. Be sure to rinseuntil the water draining from the cells no longerfeels slippery.

Replacing electronicair cleaner components

STEP 1 Inspect the cells for broken ionizer wires andbent collector plates. Repair as necessary ortake to a Honeywell Authorized Air CleanerRepair Station.

STEP 2 Slide the prefilters into the upstream prefilterguides.

STEP 3 Slide the air cleaner cells in so the air flowarrow points downstream and the handles faceoutward.

STEP 4 Firmly close the access door.

STEP 5 Turn on the air cleaner. If the cells and prefiltersare wet, the neon light may not come on andyou may hear arcing. If the arcing is annoying, simply turn the air cleaner off for 2-3 hours oruntil the cells are dry.

If your air cleaner has an Air Cleaner Monitor, the FAULT indicator may activate if you installwet cells and prefilters. Again, if the neon lightor the FAULT indicator annoys you, simply turnoff the air cleaner for 2-3 hours or until the cellsand prefilters are dry.

The particles removed by the electronic aircleaner tend to be very small—less than 10microns. But what is a 10 micron particle? Well, the eye of an average size sewing needle isabout 750 microns across, and the dot in the i inthe word micron is about 400 microns. Gener-ally, particles smaller than 10 microns can beseen only with a microscope, except in verylarge concentrations, such as a puff of smoke.Your electronic air cleaner can remove evensmaller particles that can be seen only with anelectron microscope.

Although particles 1 micron and smaller makeup only about 20 percent of the total weight ofparticles in unfiltered air, they account for over99 percent of the numbers of particles.

Because they are so tiny, these particles tend toremain suspended in the air unless they collidewith a solid surface. Then they attach bymolecular adhesion and stick like glue, stainingwalls and furniture and coating your air condi-tioning coils. And of course, some of theseparticles can cause allergic reactions or simplymake the environment less pleasant.

First, large particles (lint, hair) are caught by theprefilters. Then, as the dirty air passes throughthe intense high voltage electric field surround-ing the ionizer wires, all particles, even thesmallest are given an electric charge. The airthen passes into the collector where thealternate parallel plates are charged positiveand negative, creating a uniform electrostaticfield. Since opposites attract, the chargedparticles stick to the collector plates, which havean opposite electric charge. The air leaving theair cleaner contains very few particles.

Each time the air circulates through the heating/air conditioning system and air cleaner, moreparticles are removed. These particles aregenerated by normal household activities, andalso enter the house from outside. That is whywe recommend that you use the air cleaner asmuch as possible.

The regular furnace filter collects mainly large, visible particles that reach the filter. Its mainpurpose is to protect the furnace and airconditioner blower. The electronic air cleanercollects these large particles, plus many of thesmaller, mostly invisible particles. Its purpose isto reduce indoor air pollution as well as toprotect the blower, air conditioning coils andheat exchanger.

Odors are gases, not particles. They cannot beremoved by the air cleaner or by any other filterdesigned to remove particles. However, somegases can be trapped by an activated carbonfilter or diluted with outdoor air. If odors are aconcern, talk to your heating and air condition-ing dealer about installing a carbon filterdownstream of the air cleaner or providing anoutdoor air inlet.

Air ionizers have been marketed with claimsabout purifying the air and promising medicalbenefits. It should be noted that supporting tests,if available, are controversial and incomplete.

Air ionizers may generate a bit of ozone, and ofcourse some ions (air molecules with an electriccharge). This is what your electronic aircleaner’s ionizer does, but with greater inten-sity. However, air ionizers do not have goodcollectors, if any. With air ionizers, the chargeddirt particles are collected by walls, floor andfurniture, requiring frequent cleaning of theentire building to remove the effects of collectedcontamination. By comparison, an electronic aircleaner deposits contamination on the cell(s)and prefilter(s) for easy cleaning.

Electronic air cleaners generate a very smallamount of ozone, about 0.005 to 0.010 partsper million (PPM). The amount is highest whenthe air cleaner is new.

The average person can detect the odor ofozone in concentrations as low as 0.003 to0.010 PPM. The U.S. Food and Drug Adminis-tration, and Health and Welfare Canadarecommend that indoor ozone concentrationshould not exceed 0.050 PPM. As a compari-son, the outdoor ozone level in major cities issometimes higher than 0.100 PPM.

Use a carbonfilter to removeodors

69-0764—2

If desired, the ozone generated by the air cleanercan be reduced by asking your dealer to:• Install an activated carbon filter downstream

of the air cleaner, or• Adjust the air cleaner power supply to

reduce ozone production. This adjustmentwill reduce ozone production about 20-25percent, but will also reduce air cleaningefficiency about 7-10 percent.

White dust is made up of particles that settle outof the air before they get to the return air duct. You can help prevent this white dust fromsettling by running your fan constantly. Also:

• Be sure the return registers are not blockedwith furniture.

• Be sure the discharge ducts are clean (bestdone before installing the air cleaner).

• Be sure your clothes dryer is vented to theoutside and is not plugged.

• If you have new rugs or drapes or newwoolen blankets, be aware that the lint fromthese items will reduce with age.

• In new or remodeled homes, plaster dust orpaint pigment may contribute to white dust, but will reduce with time.

• Use of a humidifier may contribute to whitedust, especially if filled with undistilled water.
