DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY

TO MARY IMMACULATE

VERY REVEREND JOSEPH T. CAHILL, C.M. President

DEDICATION OF ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY

TO MARY IMMACULATE

Mary, Mother of God, Holy Virgin, we, the Board of Trustees, administrators,

faculty, and students of St. John's University, renew our filial and abiding love

to you at this Baccalaureate Mass, as we consecrate again our beloved University

to you. With you, may we be consecrated completely to your Son, Christ our

Lord, and like you, dedicated to fulfilling the will of Our Father. Our intentions

in this dedication include our whole being - all that we have, all that we pres

ently are, and especially all that we ever hope to be. In our re-consecration, we

ask you to reserve a special place in your maternal heart for our benefactors, rela

tives and friends, without whose prayers and material assistance our noble

commitments are impossible. Humbly we acknowledge how profoundly and

earnestly we depend upon your continued intercession in the realization of

the sublime objectives of our University.

Mother of Christ, inspire our dedicated administrators and faculty with a love

of your Son and make Him the center of their lives. Inflame within our students

a spirit of scholarship, a love of fundamental moral virtues and a burning

apostolic zeal, with which they may hasten the triumph of the Kingdom of God

and be vibrant instruments of peace among all peoples and all nations.

Mother of the Church, help each one of us to exemplify in our lives our

University motto of perfecting the soul through Christian education. With Christ

as our divine focal point and you as our cherished model of faith, we renew

our consecration of St. John's University.

CITATIONS FOR HONORARY DEGREES

RICHARD V. GIORDANO

During the past four years, Richard V. Giordano has served as president and chief operating officer, as well as a member of the board of directors of Airco., Inc. The latter, a diversified company of 14,000 employees, operates 106 domestic and 7 foreign plants, and specializes in chemical, metallic, and electronic equipment. A native of New York City, Mr. Giordano received in 1956 his B.A. degree from Harvard College and in 1959 his LL.B. degree from Columbia University Law School. Associated initially with the law firm of Shearman and Sterling, Airco's general counsel in New York City, he joined the corporation itself as an assistant secretary in 1963. In rapid succession his talents merited promotion to vice president and executive vice president of the Airco Distributor Products Division, which later merged into the Airco Welding Products Division. Elected a corporate group vice president in 1967, he assumed responsibility for four key divisions: Welding Products, Cryogenics, Industrial Gases and Ohio Medical Products. Last year our honoree was elected a member of the board of directors of the British Oxygen Company, Limited, in London, England. He also serves as a director of both the Inmont Corporation and Calvary Hospital of New York City. In addition to being a member of the Bar of the City of New York, Mr. Giordano holds active membership in the American Iron and Steel Institute, the American Welding Society, and the Economic Club of New York City. Married to the former Barbara Claire Beckett of Evanston, Illinois, the couple reside with their two daughters and son in Saddle River, New Jersey. St. John's University delights in honoring this young and accomplished business executive by conferring upon Richard V. Giordano, honoris causa, the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science.

JOHN SHULTS LAWSON

John S. Lawson is currently president of Marine Midland Banks, Incorporated. He also continues as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Marine Midland Bank - New York, largest of the holding company's ten banks which will be merged next year into one bank. His duties also embrace the leadership of the multiple national and international affiliates of this prestigious $12.7 billion banking system with 359 offices in 12 states, 32 offices in 22 foreign countries, and associated banks in Australia, France, Ireland, Turkey, and Venezuela. Prior to assuming the presidency of Marine Midland Bank - New York five years ago, he had served the institution at various times as Vice President, Security Trading, a post in which overall Money Management operations were entrusted to his skillful competence. In his earlier financial career, he had risen to prominence as a key officer with J. P. Morgan, Discount Corporation, and Clark, Dodge & Company. Born in New York City on August 1, 1924, he graduated from the Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire, in 1942, and obtained his B.A. from Harvard College in 1946. During World War II, Mr. Lawson had served for three years with the United States Army as a Staff Sergeant and he merited the award of the Bronze Star. Aside from being Director and National Treasurer of the American Cancer Society, Incorporated, he lends his abundant talents as a trustee and director to a host of professional, civic, and charitable organizations. He resides in Bronxville, New York, with his wife of 28 years, the former Charlotte Courcelles. They are the parents of two daughters. St. John's University proudly pays tribute to the distinguished accomplishments of this gentleman of the banking industry by conferring upon John Shults Lawson, honoris causa, the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science.

THE HONORABLE JAMES L. BUCKLEY

Often described as a man of "universal interests," Senator James L. Buckley became, in 1970, the first candidate in thirty years to win a Senate seat on a third-party ticket. A lifelong Republican, he lists himself as "ConservativeRepublican" in the Congressional Directory, and currently serves as Vice Chairman of the GOP Senatorial Campaign Committee. He aims to combine traditional conservative philosophy with a commonsense regard for the realities of contemporary politics. Both the volume and tenor of his mail suggest that he has been successful in his efforts. Now completing four years in office, Senator Buckley has received an estimated million pieces of mail and many thousand speaking requests from the citizenry of New York State and across the nation. An articulate proponent for a strong national defense, he also continues to urge a more rigorous posture on international drug traffic. Senator .Buckley has two major committee assignments: the Committee on Public Works and the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. Our honoree has combined a lifelong love of nature with a 17-year career in petroleum exploration. As a result, he brings to the Interior Committee a judicious overview to the problems of both energy and environmental conservation. Long ago he warned of an impending energy crisis, but argues against lifting our environmental controls. Born in New York City fifty-two years ago, he is the fourth of 10 children of William Frank and Aloise Steiner Buckley. In 1943 he received his B.A. from Yale University and then joined the U.S. Navy, where as a deck officer on an LST he participated in the Leyte, Lingayen, and Okinawan invasions. After graduation from Yale Law School in 1949, he joined the law firm of Wiggin and Dana. Later he joined the Catawba Corporation, a firm that provides administrative, technical, and financial services to petroleum and mineral exploration companies. As a vice president of Catawba, the Senator traveled an average of 50,000 miles a year outside the United States during the 15 years prior to his election. Married for 22 years to the former Ann Frances Cooley, they are the parents of five sons and one daughter. With admiration and pride, St. John's University now confers upon the distinguished Senator from New York, James L. Buckley, honoris causa, the degree of Doctor of Laws.

ACADEMIC HERALDRY

The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date hack to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning.

The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinguished by its long pointed sleeves.

The holder of a master's degree wears a gown with the same yoke effect as the bachelor's. The gown however, is worn open, and the very long sleeve is squared and closed at the end, the forearm coming through a slit near the elbow.

The gown for the doctor's degree is also worn open, it has broad velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on the large, bell-like sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the field of learning to which the degree pertains.

Generally, all caps may be of serge or broadcloth. In addition, doctor's caps may be of velvet and adorned by a gold tassel.

The hood gives color and distinction to the academic costume. The hood-a black shell-like affair of varying size for the three degrees and a material to match the gown-is silk-lined stressing the colors of the institution conferring the degree. The hood is then bordered with velvet of the color signifying the respective fields of learning.

The colors indicative of the various fields of learning are as follows:

Arts and Letters ______________ White Library Science_______ I emon Laws ____________________ _Furple Education... 'ght Blue

Philosophy____ Blue Science Golden Yellow Fine Arts ________ __Brown Business Administration _________ Light Brown

Pharmacy _________________________________ Green

It is important to note that the field of learning having prior mention in the conferment of the degree, and not the department governing the major work, determines the color that is proper for the velvet of the hood. The doctor of philosophy degree requires blue velvet irrespective of the major field. If more than one degree is held, the gown and hood of the highest degree are worn.

Some of the institutional colors to be seen at an academic ceremony are as follows: Catholic University, lemon yellow with white chevron; Columbia, light blue with white chevron; Fordham, maroon; Harvard, crimson; Manhattan, white with emerald green chevron; New York University, violet; St. John's University, bright red with white chevron.
