Bloody ScotlandCrime in 19th Century ScotlandMalcolm Archibald Archibald

Contributor BioMalcolm Archibald has had a variety of occupations from postman to college lecturer. He is theauthor of Scottish Battles; Mother Law, which was a runner up at the inaugural Dundee Book Prize;Whales for the Wizard, which won the Dundee Book Prize; and The Darkest Walk, which was a winner inthe People's Book Prize.

SummaryIn the 19th century Scotland was depicted as a land of misty glens, engineering innovation, andinventive genius. But Scotland was also the home of brutal murder, terrifying riots, child cruelty, bankrobbery, and acid attack. Women as well as men were capable of horrendous acts, and crime couldstrike anywhere: at home, on the road, and even at sea. From the Borders to the Northern Isles, crime was never far away. Edinburgh, with its reputation for polite decorum, was also the scene ofpoisoning and savagery; the dark streets of industrial Glasgow and Dundee harbored thieves andmuggers, while the villages of coast and country hid wild men and vicious women. This book exposessome of the crimes, remembered and forgotten, that rocked the Scotland of our ancestors.

SummaryCommander George Gideon of Scotland Yard attended the Fiftieth Criminal Investigation Ball, alongwith his wife, Kate, and daughter, Penny. It was a formal and elegant occasion and a good time washad by all – but Gideon was aware of many undercurrents present in the room. Meanwhile, therewere crimes to be dealt with. Instantly, there was a murder, for which a bicycle with a loose-fittingmudguard likely held a clue. Moreover, a collapsed building had trapped many, and a man serving asentence in Dartmoor prison, for a crime he had not committed, was about to have an unauthorisedvisitor. Gideon was also concerned for his officers too, which just added to what sometimes seemedlike an overwhelming burden.

Scottish Transport TokensRonnie Breingan

Contributor BioRonnie Breingan is a past President of the Glasgow & West of Scotland Numismatic Society and theAyrshire Coin Club. A retired banker, Ronnie works as a guide at the National Trust for Scotland’sCulzean Castle.

SummaryMost transport tokens in Scotland were introduced in the middle of the 19th century, but until recentyears they did not attract many collectors. The collecting and study of tokens has now very muchbecome a branch of numismatics. The early tokens were usually struck in brass, copper or bronze, but as we moved into the 20th century celluloid ones were introduced. From celluloid, various formsof plastic and fiber have been used as well as various metals, and this has continued right up to thepresent day. Tokens were in fact the tickets of their time. Paper tickets did not come into use untilabout the 1880s and in Glasgow on the tramways from the late 1870s. By selling a number oftokens, transport firms were assured of the custom of these passengers. This also saved theconductor—or guard as he was sometimes called—from handling cash and was thus also a securityprecaution.

Robert the Bruce, King of ScotsRonald McNair Scott

Contributor BioRonald McNair Scott is a former literary critic for the Sunday Times and the author of two novels.

SummaryThe story of one of the most remarkable of medieval kings

Robert the Bruce is one of the great heroic figures of history. When after years of struggle Scotlandwas reduced to a vassal state by Edward I of England it was Bruce who, supported by the ScottishChurch and a group of devoted followers, had himself crowned as King of Scots and renewed thefight for freedom. Ronald McNair Scott has used the accounts of contemporary chronicles, particularlythose of John Barbour, to reconstruct the story of one of the most remarkable of medieval kings. Itis a story with episodes quite as romantic as those of King Arthur, but one which belongs to theauthentic history of the Scottish nation.

Contributor BioMickey Mayhew is an expert in Marian history, and was selected to place the flowers on Mary's graveat a private ceremony in 2013.

SummaryFirst-hand anecdotes and extracts from diaries, letters, and rare historical sources offer afascinating history of a divisive figure, as well as remarkable insights into the Tudor era

Mary Queen of Scots is perhaps one of the most controversial and divisive monarchs in regal history. Her story reads like a particularly spicy novel, with murder, kidnap, adultery, assassination, andexecution. To some she is one of the most wronged women in history, a pawn used and abused byher family in the great monarchical marriage game; to others, a murderous adulteress whocommitted regicide to marry her lover and then spent years in captivity for the crime, endlesslyplotting the demise of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I of England. This book covers the entirebreathtaking scope of her amazing life and examines the immense cultural legacy she left behind, from the Schiller play of the 1800s to the CW teen drama Reign. Temptress, terrorist, or tragicqueen, this book will give you the lowdown on one of history’s most misunderstood monarchs.

The Tartan PimpernelDonald Caskie, Mike Hughes

Contributor BioDonald Caskie, was born at Bowmore, Islay in 1902 and educated at the University of Edinburgh,Caskie left his first charge at Gretna to become minister of the Scot's Kirk in Paris. His wartimeexperiences were first published in 1957. Caskie ended his career ministering in Skelmorlie andWemyss Bay and died in 1983.

SummaryThis is the remarkable story of Donald Caskie, minister of the Scots Kirk in Paris at the time of theGerman invasion of France in 1940. Although he had several opportunities to flee, Caskie stayedbehind to help establish a network of safe houses and escape routes for Allied soldiers and airmentrapped in occupied territory. This was dangerous work, and despite the constant threat of captureand execution, Caskie showed enormous resourcefulness and courage as he aided thousands ofservicemen to freedom. Finally arrested and interrogated, he was sentenced to death at a Nazishow-trial, and it was only through the intervention of a German pastor that he was saved. After thewar, Caskie returned to the Scots Kirk, where he served as minister until 1960. Victoria's Scottish LionThe Life of Colin Campbell, Lord ClydeAdrian Greenwood, Philip J. Haythornthwaite

Contributor BioAdrian Greenwood is a dealer in rare books and has written many articles for antique magazines.Philip Haythornthwaite is an internationally renowned military historian with a particular expertise inthe Napoleonic Wars. He is the author of more than 40 books, including British Riflemen, Gallipoli,1915, and Napoleonic Light Cavalry Tactics.

SummaryThe first full-length appraisal of an incredible military career ranging from the War of 1812 to theFirst Opium War in China and well beyond

Military service over an unprecedented 55 years took Field Marshal Colin Campbell from thebattlefields of the Iberian peninsula to the plains of India, via the West Indies, Nova Scotia, China,Java, the Balkans, and Russia. Wounded six times—the first time at 20, the last when 65 yearsold—he always led from the front, ever ready to ride the whirlwind and direct the storm. There wasn’ta great power which he did not stand beside as an ally, or confront as a foe. He was in command atthe most decorated battle in British history, earning 18 Victoria Crosses, and it was he whoreconquered a subcontinent with an army Wellington would have thought sufficient for areconnaissance-in-force. But Campbell’s story is also a very personal one, the struggle of the son ofa Glaswegian cabinetmaker who climbed all the way to the House of Lords.

The Scottish GardenerSuki Urquhart, Ray Cox

Contributor BioSuki Urquhart started gardening in the Far East. In the mid 1970s she moved back to her nativeScotland where she gardened around a sixteenth-century tower house. Since then she has lived andcreated gardens for herself throughout Scotland. She became a fulltime garden designer in the1980s and she has worked as a freelance garden and features writer for numerous magazines andnewspapers since 1996. Ray Cox's family has been involved in horticulture for three generations. Heis a full-time garden and plant photographer whose work has been published in a wide range ofmagazines, newspapers, books, websites, calendars and greetings cards throughout Europe andAmerica.

SummaryGardens have been created to fulfill many functions: some to provide food or medicine, others forpleasure and recreation or simply to reflect the wealth and status of their creators. This lavishlyillustrated book celebrates the extraordinary diversity of Scottish gardens and their creators, whetherthey be herbalists, plant collectors, nurserymen, botanists, artists or amateurs. It also traces thedevelopment of different types of garden—monastic gardens, royal gardens, walled gardens andtown and village gardens—through the ages. By focusing on around sixty Scottish gardens, SukiUrquhart examines the distinctive tradition of Scottish gardening, how it has developed over time, and how it has been shaped by climate, conflicts and changing fashions. Since the emphasis is verymuch on how gardeners stamp their own character on their gardens, it is private rather than publicgardens which are featured here. Information is given on visiting the gardens.

A New Race of MenScotland 1815?1914Michael Fry

Contributor BioMichael Fry is the author of The Dundas Depotism; How the Scots Made America; The Scottish Empire; The Union: England, Scotland and the Treaty of 1707; and Wild Scots: Four Hundred Years of HighlandHistory. He has also written numerous articles on modern Scottish history and several politicalpamphlets and has contributed to most major Scottish and British newspapers. He has been aweekly columnist for the Scotsman, the Herald, and the Sunday Times.

SummaryIn his new book, Michael Fry goes well beyond the conventional analyses of the economy and societyto which previous histories have confined themselves. Here the central thread of the story is notsteady assimilation to the norms of the United Kingdom but the survival of distinct forms ofScottishness that both derived from an independent past and laid the foundations for thereassertion of nationality in the present time. The emphasis is therefore not on those aspects inwhich Scotland became more like the rest of Britain—though these are acknowledged anddescribed—but rather on the ways in which Scotland remained different. Through detailed newresearch, particular attention is paid to the development of politics and government in the Victorianera. Above all, however, Fry points to the condition of Scottish culture, in both its triumphs and itsfailings, as the key to understanding what made the nation falter in some respects yet in otherssurvive and at length prosper once again. Throughout, for this exemplary era of Scottishindividualism, he relies not on theories and statistic...

SummaryOffering a fresh assessment of Alexander II’s contribution to the making of Scotland as a nation, this book explores the king’s successes and failures and lifts the focus from an introspectivenational history to look at the man and his kingdom in wider British and European history. Itexamines his international relationships and offers the first detailed analysis of the efforts to workout a lasting diplomatic solution to Anglo-Scottish conflict over his inherited claims to the northerncounties of England. More than just a political narrative, the book also seeks to illuminate aspects ofthe king’s character and his relationships with those around him, especially his mother, his first wifeJoan Plantagenet, and the great magnates, clerics, and officials who served in his household andadministration. By equal measure state builder and political unifier as well as ruthless opportunistand bloody-handed aggressor, Alexander II has been praised or vilified by past historians but hasrarely been viewed in the round.

Assembling EnclosureTransformations in the Rural Landscape of Post-Medieval North-East EnglandRonan O'Donnell

Contributor BioRonan O'Donnell has a doctorate from the University of Durham, having gained a BSc in Archaeologyfrom Durham and an MA in English Local History from the University of Leicester. His interests focuson the relationship between global and local process and the implications of changes to systems ofland tenure.

SummaryThe landscape history of North-East England has not been studied as much as other parts of thecountry. This book begins to fill this gap by utilizing Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to re-assess thefamiliar topics of enclosure and improvement. It reveals the contribution of local 'actors' – includinglandowners, tenants and the landscape itself – to these 'processes'. In so doing it transforms ourunderstanding of the way in which the landscape of Northumberland was created during theeighteenth and nineteenth centuries and carries wider implications for how we might approachenclosure in other parts of the country.

The Great Scottish Witch-HuntEurope's Most Obsessive DynastyP. G. Maxwell-Stuart

Contributor BioP. G. Maxwell-Stuart is the author of Satan’s Conspiracy: Magic & Witchcraft in Sixteenth CenturyScotland, Witchcraft: A History, Witch Hunters and Wizards: A History.

SummaryScotland, in common with the rest of Europe, was troubled from time to time by outbreaks ofwitchcraft which the authorities sought to contain and then to suppress, and the outbreak of1658-1662 is generally agreed to represent the high water mark of Scottish persecution. These werepeculiar years for Scotland. For nine years Scotland was effectively an English province with largelyEnglish officials in charge. In 1660 this suddenly changed, so the threat to church and state from aplague of witches was particularly disturbing. The tension between imported official English attitudesto witchcraft and the revived fervor of Calvinist religion combined to produce a peculiar atmospherein which the activities of witches drew hostile attention to an unprecedented degree.

The HighlandsCalum I. Maclean, Sorley MacLean

SummaryOf the books written on the Scottish Highlands, many have been penned by outsiders with only themost superficial knowledge of Gaelic culture and language. In this new edition of his classic work, thelate Calum I. Maclean, a Gaelic-speaking Highlander, interprets the traditions, culture, and ways oflife of his native land. He is concerned not so much with places, beauty spots, or scenery as with theHighlanders themselves in their own self-created environment. Writing largely of individuals, Macleanmakes clear why Highland culture is unique in the world—and if lost, could never be recovered orrecreated.

The Knights Templar and ScotlandRobert Ferguson

Contributor BioRobert Ferguson is an attorney who was invested into the Knights Templar, Grand Priory of the Scotsin 1998 and is the Priory's Avocat. He is also a former regional vice-president of the Clan FergusonSociety of North America. He lives in Claremont, California.

SummaryNow available in paperback, the first book to chronicle the history of the Knights Templar inScotland, from 1127 to the present, with a new theory on Templar participation at the Battle ofBannockburnPlaces and books such as Rosslyn Chapel and The Da Vinci Code have focused attention on Scotland'sKnights Templar. Who they were and what they did has been touched upon, but never properlyexplored. Close advisors to Scotland's early kings, they were major property owners and respectedlandlords in a harsh and unforgiving time. But they were also secretive and arrogant. Did they flee toScotland just prior to their arrest on October 13, 1307? Did they fight with Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn in1314? And how did the Templars continue on after Bannockburn? This book intertwines Templar andScottish history, beginning with an overview of the Templars, and then applying this to Templar life inScotland. It describes the Templar arrests in France and contrasts this with the Templar Inquisition atHolyrood, then following the Templars from Bannockburn to the present.

The Makers of ScotlandPicts, Romans, Gaels and VikingsTim Clarkson

Contributor BioTim Clarkson is a former academic librarian and the author of The Men of the North and The Picts.

SummaryCovering a thousand years of Scottish history, this account incorporates both historical andcontemporary research into old theories and controversies. During the first millennium AD, the mostnortherly part of Britain evolved into the country known today as Scotland. The transition was a longprocess of social and political change driven by the ambitions of powerful warlords; tribal chiefs andRoman generals, at first, followed by dynamic warrior-kings who campaigned far beyond their ownborders. From Lothian to Orkney and from Fife to the Isle of Skye, fierce battles were won and lost, but, by AD 1000, a dynasty of Gaelic-speaking kings, the Picts, and Scots began to forge a single, unified nation which transcended enmities. With maps to illustrate the history, this chronicle brings tolife the great warrior-kings of early Scotland.

The Stewart Earls of OrkneyPeter Anderson

Contributor BioPeter Anderson is a former deputy keeper at the National Archives of Scotland.

SummaryA much-neglected period of Scottish history is brought to light in this comprehensive study. Foralmost a century, the Scottish islands of Orkney and Shetland were under the rule of Stewart earls, father and son, whose rulings are considered remarkable due to their infamous reputation in islandhistory. An illegitimate son of James V, king of Scots, Robert Stewart seized power of Orkney in the1560s and was created earl of Shetland in 1581. Robert’s son, the extraordinary and ill-starred EarlPatrick—commonly known as “Black Patie”—was executed for treason in 1615, bringing the era to aclose. Wonderful illustrations bolster this thorough history of the legendary pair of rulers of Orkneyand Shetland.

John Ashton argues that theguilty verdict, delivered by some of Scotland’s most senior judges, was perverse and irrational, andhe details how prosecutors withheld numerous items of evidence that were favorable to Megrahi. Thebook accuses successive Scottish governments of turning their back on the scandal and pretendingthat the country’s treasured independent criminal justice system remains untainted. With numerousobservers believing the Crown Office is out of control and the judiciary stuck in the last century, politicians must address these problems or their aspirations for Scotland to become a modernEuropean social democracy are ...

SummaryA celebration of Scotland's rich sporting history, profiling 50 of the nation's all-time greatestsportspeople

Scotland may not have won a World Cup (yet!), but many of the country's sportsmen and women arerevered as global legends. In football, the likes of Denis Law, "Slim" Jim Baxter, and Jimmy "Jinky"Johnstone would not have looked out of place in the canary yellow of Brazil, while managers Sir MattBusby, Bill Shankly, and Jock Stein have become part of football folklore, as has Sir Alex Ferguson inmore recent times. Amazingly, Scots have conquered the world in just about every major sport: JimClark and Sir Jackie Stewart in Formula One; Ken Buchanan and Benny Lynch in the boxing ring;sprinters Allan Wells and Eric Liddell on the Olympic track; and, as befits a nation renowned as "thehome of golf," Sandy Lyle was recognized as the greatest player on the planet upon winning theMasters in 1988. Scottish sport is the richest of tapestries and here the cream of the crop areentertainingly profiled in a revealing collection of pen portraits of stars past and present.

Wooden Fishing Boats of ScotlandJames Pottinger

Contributor BioJames A. Pottinger is a retired marine engineer who has served in the Merchant Navy and in seniormanagement in the North Sea oil industry for Scotland, Norway, and Holland. Brought up in a fishingvillage in Shetland, he has a life-long interest in the fishing industry and many connections with it.He has previously written Fishing Boats of Scotland, Scots of Greenock, Fishing Boats of Scotland: A NewLook, and Clyde Built. He lives in Aberdeen.

SummaryWith the gradual phasing out of wooden fishing boats of Scotland it is timely to record some of thesehandsome vessels. The general opinion is that in the era 1960-80 builders produced some of themost shapely and graceful craft, a testament to the skill of the boat builders and designers. Initiallythe designs were a collaboration of builders and skippers, but later the implementation of statutoryrules demanded a more structured approach by qualified naval architects, which inevitably resulted ina certain degree of standardisation. In contrast to James A. Pottinger’s earlier books, which includedall types of Scottish fishing boats both large and small, this new illustrated volume concentratessolely on the graceful wooden boats, regarded by many to be the best looking boats of all, withsome images of initial keel and backbone construction through to the melancholy sight of beautifulcraft being cut up. In earlier days such boats were scrapped only due to old age, but sadly politicalfactors now often dictate the destruction of classic wooden craft.
