This Christmas would bea special day, one they hadnever fully understoodbefore. They were nowfuily equipped for life'sjourney. They were readyto celebrate the real mean-ing of Christmas, then travelto those snow-coveredmountains. @

Youth camp hadbecome a regular rou-tine in his summers,along with Pow Wows

and other Rangers camp-outs. Two summers ago

lonathan had knelt at thealtar and had received thebaptism in the HolySpirit. It had been atremendous experience.But this past summersomething had hap-

pened that would altarall the plans he had careful-

.--rlonathanthought to himself as helooked out the window. Theflakes of snow continued tofall. For most kids, a heavysnowfall meant snowballfights, skiing, and sledding.But for Jonathan it was puredisaster. Ail his plans wereruined.

]onathan had spent weeksplanning an awards camp-out.His patrol had planned onearning the Survival Merit.Now . . . well it was obviousthat even if his comm-ander would let them, his par-ents would not. Bummer!Bummer! Bummer!

Jonathan continued tostare out the window andwatch the big snowflakes gen-tly fall. His mind began towander back to youth camp

]onathan's daydreamturned to the adventures hehad planned. I could havebeen a great archeologist anddiscover ancient ruins,Jonathan thought. Or I couldhave been a running back:"He fakes left, then right,dodges a middle linebacker,breaks through the line, thentouchdown!" Or I could havebeen a world famous scientist,carefully examining theresults of my latest experi-ment.

Adventurer, athlete, scien-tist, and inventor, all dreamsthat would never come topass, Jonathan assumed,aII because of youth camp.

Then again lonathan'smind drifted back to youthcamp: The evangelist hadpreached a great sermon atthe youth camp. ]onathan'sheart had felt a major tug as

he went to the altar to pray.AI1 around him other teenswere praying and rejoicing inthe Lord. The organ playerwas playing a song andsingers were singing, "I'll gowhere you want me to go,dear Lord." Tears began tostream down Jonathan's face.This song was indeed hisprayer. He wanted to do whatGod wanted him to do.Jonathan looked up from thealtar, and there above the plat-form hung a huge banner."We must go . . . so they willknow!"

lonathan recalled readingthe line over and over. Eachtime he did, the still, smallvoice of the Holy Spiritbecame louder and louder,saying, "Jonathan, will youBo, so they will know?"Suddenly, Jonathan's heartmelted in the presence ofGod. He krrew that someday,somehow, he would become amissionary and travel theworld for his Savior, lesusChrist.

The comforting thought is that thoLigh rve in oursehes are u.orth-less and inadequate, we are more than conquerors: \\-e are heirs. chil-dren of the living God, This is nhv He instructs us to lean noi on[our] own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5, NIV).

The psalmist reminds us ln Psalm 139:14 that \\re are "fearfulh'and wonderfully made." ]ust think of what God has in mind for thespirit-man.

Is there anr, vronder nhy the apostle Paul says in Ephesians 5:1,"Be imitators of God"? Our natural tendencv is to think of ourselvesand our abilities in human terms. Hor,rjever, God r,r,ants us to"retune" our thinking to His thinking: as His children who canreceive from Him exceedingly abundantll, above all we think andask.

Read closely what Paul states in Ephesians L:18-21.: "I play ... fhotthe eves of your heart may be enlightened in order that you ntayknov' the hope to which he hcts called you, the riches of his gloriousinheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great por,rrer.., is likethe r,r,orking of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ whenhe raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in theheavenlv realms, far above all rule and authority, po\^rer and domin-ion, and everv title that can be given, not only in the present age butalso in the one to come" (NIV, italics mine).

The next time you feel inadequate in ,vour calling and talents, thenext time you r,r,onder if you are making a difference in the lives ofRangers, or the next time you see a Royal Ranger whose self-worth islacking, remember this: The One r,r,ho has conquered death itself issitting at the right hand of God, ever interceding for us and our min-istry.

Neil Anderson states it well in his book Daily in Christ, aDevotional: "[God] wants us to be what He has called us to be. And ifthat's what God wants done, no situations or circumstances of lifecan keep you from being the ... leader God has called yoit to be." Hesiates further, "God has a unique place of ministr-v for each of us. "

For us that unique mlnistry is Roval Rangers. And for us theabove Scripture verses note that nothing can stop us from being r,rrhatGod wants us to be and doing what God \ /ants us to do. in short, r,r,e

can be great warriors in the battle for the souls of bovs, and togetherwe can reach thousands ofboys for Chrisi.

The battle-and it's a constant one-begins in our minds; rve mustrealize who we are and r,r,hat God has in store for us. Let's gear up forbattle by being imitators of God and b1, ful11, undslslanding r,r,ho r,ve

As a pastor my approachwas simple: Every new convertwas encouraged to understandthe necessity of Christiangrowth that would lead to disci-pleship in Christ. Apostle PauItaught us in Ephesians 2:10 thatall things are in Christ |esus.Without Christ there is nohopc. "Wc are lris workman-ship, created in Christ Jesusunto good works." The point iswhatever Jesus would involvehimself in just might be thebasis of becoming an effectivefollower of the Cross.

Speaking as a minister, I feelit is necessary to point out thatwhile almost all new convertswant to be used of God in thelocal church, I feel sufficienitime (at ieast 6 months to 1

year) should pass before allow-ing new converts to step into a

place of leadership. This timespan should be used to otrservejust wliat kincl of change hastaken place in the ner,v convert,while giving opportunity forChrislian malurity.

Pentecostal worship in ihechurch family and involvementin cornrnitted altar services willtell much about true comrnit-ment to Christ. Deviant charac-ter will be brought to ihe fore-front in sincere prayer timearound the altar. Not only does"altar time" present an opportu-nity for an individual toapproach Cic,d on a dilect basis,we usually find that either adeepcr Iife commitment isrnade, or they wiil retreat to alesser place in which true char-

At the point of learning toprepare for ieadership, ourchurch leaders made everyeffort to enroll individuals ineither the Royol RangersLeadership Training Course orthe Missionettes LeadershipTraining, Caurse. We found thatthe cardinal doctrines of theAssemblies of God and the fun-damentals ol faith are taught ona level of knowledge that wasreadily understood by all.Simplicity and yet depth are ofgreat value to new converts.

In today's makeup of ourpresent society, one quicklyrealizes that not all "peoples"have been educated in ourBible coileges or have had theprivilege to attend ourAssemblies of God youthcamps.

From my pastoral view-point, I am constantly in awelBeing a part of God's plan ofteaching a "wayward soul,"regardless of the particularsocial standing or ethnic back-ground, is spiritually reward-ing. The importance of trainingbecomes a spiral that leads con-tinualiy uprvard toward theC-TOSS,

kno,,vledgeable spokesperson toshare what training is available.God has in all probabilitycalled someone to do the workof that particular ministry. Theimportance of training in thediscipleship process is still ofgreat value today. @

pastor I often felt the need forand the importance of trainingwas closely related to the "ptiv-iJege of ministry."

Webster's dictionary definesthe meaning of the word disci-ple as being a follower or pupil.The n,ord value has a doutrlemeaning. The standards ormoral principles of a new con-vert are laised by a growth andmaturing process, as well asproviding scripturally qualifiedworkers for a church family. Iam still inrvardly thrilled by theprivilege of being a part of thatprocess as a minister.

Training enlarges the base orfoundation that helps a new fol-lower or disciple io grow andlearn, It becomes a self-l"ruilding of confidence. Totrain rreans to guirle in thedeveloprnent of-to instruct orprepare as one learns to waitupon God for his or her min-istry.

The feeling and attitude ihatis developed by a sense ofaccomplishment seems toeniarge itself and when put in ascriptural context begins to cre-ate a cycle of growth in thechurch body that can be far-reaching.

Arr individual is brought tothe kingdom of God throughregeneration, then discipled ortrained. In a true conversionand transformation of nerar con-verts, they begin to feel a senseof burden that leads them to

Answer-Paul Stanek, camPdirector: The purpose of the NationalTraining Academy is to eievate the ser-

vice and ministry of each individual-teaching them to be better men, better

ministers, and better commanders.Our second purpose is to help thetrainees to become our key ieaders inour future national training camps.

Actually we have two schoolsgoing on during National AcademY-Phase 2 is designed to train general

national training camp staff members

and Phase 3 for senior commandercandidates. Phase 1 is the correspon-

dence course that candidates must suc-

cessfully complete prior to NationalAcademy.

mander: It has been almost 2 Yearssince we began developing theNational Academy. The concePtevolved out of the Staff-in-TrainingProgram, which before that was the

the Staff School, in that we needed to

provide more hands-on training.Another main objective of the academl,

is to set a national stan-

dard on how to conduct a

National Training Camp.

Many of the students whograduate from theNational Academy will go

on to receive on-the-iobtraining at NTC's, gaining

experience to becomesenior guides or campcommanders.

The success of Royal

Rangers goes back to the

most basic essential thing: that is train-ing. So the National Academy meets

two objectives: 1) We have a nationaitraining center here at Eagle Rock, Mo'2) We have people who are coming toget trained. That interprets into a suc-

cessful Royai Rangers ministry. If we

have well-trained leaders, we willhave effective men who are being com-

missioned by Christ to win souls.However, if leaders are poorly trained,

then obviously ihe effectiveness of the

ministry will diminish.In short, the National Academy

will better equip our NTC staff, whichwill beiter train those attending NTC's

how to reach, teach, and keep boys forChrist. So it is an investment, and

each of the leaders who have attended

the academy have come to make an

investment into the Royal Purrt.r.ministry. We are raising the standards

of leadership plus paving the way for

the future leaders and the spiritualwell-being of boys.

Question: What is your role at the

National Academ,v?

We are in the process of a camPslte

orientation iesson. The senior guidecandidates have erected mini NTC

campsites, where they each conduct a

selecterl and trained? The nationalRoyal Rangers Office recently imple-mented a new training camp fornational training camp instructors to

better equip them for their task. The

training is called National Academy.

The first ever Nationai AcademY

was held May 3-7 at the NationalRoyal Rangers Training Center, Eagle

Rock, Mo. Over 100 trainees and staff

gathered to qualify leaders as nationaltraining camp instructors. Over 20

classes were taught to those becoming

certified as national training camp

instructors.The National AcademY was

designed to set a higher standard oftraining across the United States and

abroad. Both students and instructorsalike commenied on the tremendoussuccess of the training program, Manystudents said they enjoyed the "hands-

on" training, which provided them the

practicai experience they needed to

improve their instructor skills.Following are brief interviews

training will give them some experi-ence and build up their confidence as

they go through this camp. Our iob as

staff members is to point out theirstrengths and their weaknesses.

At one point in their training, the

senior guide candidates will join the

camp commander and general staffcandidates to function as a team. Ithas been a pleasure to work with the

six senior guide candidates and workwith them one-on-one.

through hands-on experience, the vari-ous methods of training taught at

national training camps. My responsi-

bility is to evaluate the candidates to

Wild Wild West Show for theThursday night Council Fire. Todaymy students will be setting up themodel campsite. We have four teams

in ali setting up the model campsites.

The camp is outstanding. Themethod in which the academy is being

conducted is probably the most effec-

tive way of training students within a

L-week period.

here said they came because theythought it was a necessary evil. These

are our veterans who have served as

NTC staff members. However, nowthat they have experienced the acade-

my, their opinions have changed and

they feel the experience thev havegained is good. I am excited to see the

fruits of the academy next year at our

National Training Camps. TheNational Academy is a super con-cept-it's too many years overdue.

Question: Where are you from, and

what is your opinion of the NationalAcademy so far?

Answer-Dennis Hammer,trainee: I am from Boise, Idaho. We

are enjoying the academy because we

have never been to staff school. Al] ofus in Southern ldaho are hoping thiswill help us out for NTC next year. So

far it really is getting practical applica-

tion. Instead of learning from a book,

we are doing it out here in the open,

which helps a lot. The hands-onIearning gives us the ability to put our

Iearning into practice.

Question: What was your percep-

tion before coming to the academl,compared to now that you are here?

Answer: We are getting morehands-on training instead of lectures

on how to do it. We are part of the

new program, so we were able to do allthe book work ahead of time. Theacademy reaily gives us a sense ofcommitment and accomplishment.

Question: You obviously havebeen involved in Royal Rangers quite a

bit. From a pastoral standpoint whatdo you think Royal Ranges is all about

Answer-Gary Fountain, trainee:I'm from Home Dale, Idaho, HomeDale Assembly of God, Outpost 43" Iam the senior pastor there.

I was in Royal Rangers for years,

kind of doing it a self-made way-notdoing it the correct way. Then when Icame to Home Dale, a couple of mymen were excited about Rangers. They

had the Rangers program going andwanted to participate in theLeadership Training Course. So i com-

pleted the course as well. After 2

years I finally finished after attending

NTC. It was when I went to the NTC

that I really caught the vision of theprogram because I did see it from a

boy's perspective. I saw how to do itright and got a lot of helpfril hints.From there I completed LTC and wenton to the Advanced National TrainingCamp, the Winter National TrainingCamp, and now the NationalAcademy. And here I am, just realiysold on the program.

When you see the boys and girlsget saved at a young age, I feel that the

Royal Rangers and Missionettes pro-grams are really where it is at. I am

not saying that Royal Rangers is the

best program, but I do not know of a

better one. So I guess it is the best,

and I really appreciate the RoyaiRangers and being a part of the team.

Question: Pastor Fountain, If youhad an audience of pastors here before

you, what would you say to them?

Answer: I would encourage every

man to go to take the LTC and go to an

NTC. Those 3 da1,s r,vould be the most

valuable days of a guy's life hecause liewouid see the Royal Rangers perspec-

tive in the way they really would wantto portray it. Pastors need to have a

vision for Royal Rangers. They need to

be exposeri to it, and without the expo-

sure they really do not know what ltheministryl is about. Once they get the

exposure, i think they really catchthe vision. @

ship, the Challenger, was launched at

that time. Discuss the similaritiesbetween the first oceanography shipand the U.S. spaceship Challenger. lt1,872 Ihe ocean was a relativelY new

flontier. In 1982 the atmosphere was a

new frontier. Both ships were to be

used for exploration of new frontiers.Discussion Questions: What happened

up on a mission, with the seven people

boys what these words mean.Pasteurized means milk has been heat-

ed to destroy germs. Homogenizedmeans the fat globules of the milk have

been "beaten" so tiny that every drop

is the same-smooth. Fortified mearcsomething healthy has been added tothe miik-usually vitamins A and D.

Decorations can be made from naturalmaterials. Here are some ideas: 1)

Decorate pine cones with sequins and

gold and silver balls glued to thescales. 2) Make minlature wreathsfrom tinv hemlock cones glued to card-

board shapes. 3) Tie bundles of cinna-

mon sticks with velvet ribbon. 4)

Make some festive "snow" coveredcones to hang or wire to wreaths.Wind some wire around the cones and

dip into wallpaper paste. When the

paste feels tacky, dip the cones intowhite laundry power. Let dry before

you decorate them with some ribbon.Everyone ioves to string popcorn and

cranberries.

3rd Week-Cone Crafts: Here are

some more craft ideas: Make comical

figures, like a jolly woodland clan.Thev can be made to hang or stand.

To keep the cones upright, glue the fat

ends of the cones to small circles cut

from cardboard. or make bases frommodeling clay. Make heads fromacorns and chestnuts. Fashion arms

from pipe cleaners. Clothe your people

with bits of felt and paper.

Bird figures can also be made fromcones. Different shaped cones will sug-

gest different birds. Add real feathers

to the cones, or make some from tis-sue, crepe, or construction paper. The

bird ligures can be hung horizontallyor made to perch.

4th Week-Winter Clothing:Prepare for this meeting a display ofwarm clothing, and explain how the

items help trap and hold body heat,

important for outside winter activities.

4th Week-Salt Water & Winter:Ask the boys, "Have you ever won-dered why the ocean water doesn'tfreeze in winter?" Explain that itdoes freeze, but the heavy concentra-

tion of salt causes it to freeze at a

stant movement of the waves discour-ages the water from freezing into ice.

Only in the far north does salt water

freeze with any regularity. About 10

percent of the earth is covered withice. These are huge masses of ice that

never melt. Icebergs are large chunks

that break off and float. (If possible,

display an encyclopedia with pictures

of icebergs.) These will sometimesmelt if they reach warmer waters. Atother times, icebergs will adhere to

each other and form larger icebergs.

Icebergs are a hazard to shiPs. One

famous ship that was supposed to be

unsinkable, the Titanic, sank on itsmaiden voyage after hitting an ice-berg. (If possible, bring to the meeting

an encyclopedia explaining thewreckage of the Titanic.) Most ice-

the conservation section of theAdventures in Camping handbook.Involve the Rangers in a discussion

on conservation. Involve them in a

conservation assignment. For exam-

ple, instruct the Rangers the week

before to separate at home all recy-

clable items. Before they separate the

trash, have them weigh the entirecontents, then weigh it again after the

recyclable items have been removed.

Doing so will help them understandhow much we throw away can be

reused. Doing our part might notseem like much. But if everyonebecomes conservatively minded, itadds up to big savings for the envi-ronment.

Znd Week-Draft Dodger: Thisweek let the Rangers make their own

draft dodgers to place across thresh-olds and window sills that lose a lotof heat. Choose some tightly wovenfabric. Cut a piece 6 inches wide bY

at Ieast 4 inches Ionger than thethreshold or sill it will span, Withthe right side of fabric folded to the

inside, stitch the fabric lengthwiseand across one end. Turn the fabricright side out and fill with sand. Sew

up the open end. Put the draft dodger

in place. No more drafts! Such a pro-ject could be used as a winterfundraiser for the outpost.

3rd Week-Christmas Giving:Christmas is a time of giving.Perhaps this Christmas your Rangers

can give a lasting gift to nature. Many

nature centers and zoos have smallstaffs that care for aII the animals.They only get time off if volunteers

offer to help feed the animals and

keep an eye on things, esPeciallY

efforts to preserve Iand orendangered species need suP-

port. Another way of giving is tohave the Rangers visit the sick ina hospital or to offer cannedgoods and gifts to the needY.

Another way tokeep the Rangersactive is to decoratethe meeting roomwith a Christmastree. The tree.vou willnotice, will make a

4th Week-Recycling: RecYcle

Doing so canteach the Rangers that recvclingbegins at home-by reusing shoeboxes, berry boxes and baskets, plasticbags, jars, cardboard boxes, catalogues

and magazines, film canisters,Styrofoam butcher's trays, egg cartons,coffee cans, deli containers, plasticsoda bottles, yogurt and cottage cheese

containers and margarine tubs. Be onthe lookout for these and other itemsthat can be used or reused.

Sth Week-Watch for Snow:Explain the following: When the tem-perature at cloud level is at freezingtemperatures or below and the cloudsare filled with moisture, be on thelookout for snow. If the air close tothe ground is warm enough, the pre-cipitation that started out as snowmay turn to rain by the time it touch-es earth. Snow is not frozen rain,which is properly known as sieet.The same principle determineswhether the snow will be "wet" or"dry." "Wet" snow forms whenslightly warmer temperatures causethe falling flakes to bunch together inclumps. "Dry" snow forms when theair temperature is very low (cold) andthe resulting flakes are smaller andharder.

f,ehruary1st Week-Snow Melt: Explain

the following: The volume of snowchanges as it melts. The greateramount of snow melts to a

lesser amount of water. The airtrapped within the flakes accounts forthe difference. Theamount of airdepends on theconditions whenthe sn ow fe ll .

"Dry" snow trapsmore air than "wet"snow that clumpstogether. Facedwith a drivewayfull of snow toshovel, you wouldprobably hope for"d.y" snow.because it weighs a

lot less! Conditions being equal,"dry" snow will also melt more readi-ly than the "wet" stuff, If you are

hoping to build a snow fort, "wet" isbest. This project can be tested bygathering snow and freezing it forsuch a meeting feature as this.

2nd Week-Snowflakes: Displaydrawings of different snow flakes,such as those iliustrated in "TheAnatomy of a Snow" in the attachedHigh Adventure. Explain that all

snow fiakes are six-sided crystals ofice, forming in one of seven basicshapes: prismatic column, hexagonalplate, cup, hexagonal column, needle,flat plate, and dendrite. It is said thatno two snowflakes are alike. Couldthat be? Considering the averagesnowflake contains 10'o moiecules ofwater (that is 10 times 10, times 10,

1B times), the number of differentcombinations those molecules canmake is mind-staggering.

3rd Week-Catching Snowflakes:Can you catch a snowflake? They meltso quickly when they land on a warmsurface. Catching them requires someplanning. Chill a dark sheet of con-struction paper outdoors or in a freez-er. Examine the single flakes with a

magnifying glass as they land on ihepaper. Permanent impressions ofsnowflakes can be made by catchingfalling flakes on a chilled pane ofglass which has been sprayed withhair spray or artist's fixative. Keepingthe prepared glass as cold as possible,take it outdoors and allow some

flakes to settle onit. When you havecollected enough,take the glassindoors and let itdry at room tem-perature for about15 minutes, You'llhave a permanentrecord of some ofnature's mostamazing designs!

4th Week-Snow Gauge: Your

Rangers can make a snow gauge. Itcan be made from any container thatyou can mark off in inches or cen-timeters. A simple gauge can be madefrom the bottom half of a clear plasticsoda bottle, marked with an indeliblelaundry marker on the outside. YourRangers can also measure snow with a

yardstick, although this is not alwaysreliable since snow drifts. On a

snowy day have the Rangers comparetheir findings with the forecastamount. @

15, 1995, I noticed large snow-

banks. Normallv the bankswould not be there this time

of the year. The1, brought to mind a

r,r,eek in February 1958, when I and 40

other young men spent a week in the

vir:inity of the Castle Peak Rest stop

on Interstate 80. Now in those days I-

80 was not there ... but we were. We

were there to learn about winter srtr-

vival in preparation for becoming sur-

vival instructors with the U.S AirForce.

When we think about survival, we

know that food is important. Water

and fire are important fbr survival too,

but the most important is shelter. To

survive one must protect himself from

the elements. flvpothermia is a killer,so to survive one must do all he carr to

stay dry and warm. And to have a fun

winter camp-out, your shelter isequallv important.

The first night of our survivaltraining, we slept in one-man moun-

tain tents, which were set up on top of

the snow. Because theY were com-

pletely enclosed, with floors and walis

all attached, we figured it would be

nice and warm. Wrong! That was

probably the coldest I have ever been.

The second day we built a snow

trench (Figure 1). We slePt a lot

caves (Figure 2) during that da,v. We

dug into the base of a snow bank rt'ithan opening about 2 feet in diameter.

We worked in two-man teams so one

person would be inside digging out

snow 'r,r,hile the other person \,ras on

the outside moving the snow ar'vaY

from the shelter. This shelter is builton three levels (see Figure 2). We

found when l,\Ie were insicle that it\,\ras verv quiet. Snow not only is good

insulation frorn the cold but aiso from

noise, It is irnportant to keep the airvent open. You can do so by using a

long stick.

Setting Up Winter SheltersWhen setting up a winter shelter,

use pr:tential places in the area forshelter (Figures 3). Also, use alaiiablematerials to iniprovise a shelter(Figure a).

What is the shelter to Protect Yotlfrom? Perhaps vou are thinking ofrain, cold, sns\ r, and winds, However,

an adequate shelter not onlv protects

you from the natural elements, but italso provides psychological well-being necessarv for good rest.

Good rest is imPortant for a sound

mind in older to make gooil decisions.

Lean-to shelters (Figures 5) offer only

rnarginal protection from wind and

rain. But an A-frame (Figures 6) ismuch easier to build and a lot easier

to close off from wind and the ele-

ments. A survir,al shelter mav be

small and cramped, but it should pro-

tect you from the elements.

When seiecting a shelter site,arroid low areas, such as creek beds'

And do not build under dead trees or

limbs. Construct the shelter so you

can sleep reasonablv well. Select a

level or near level site. Remove stones

and sticks.Even if you have commercial

tents, you mav find that in inclement

r,r,'eather thel, do not protect you from

the elements. For this reason it is

wise to carry some type of waterproof

material- such as a sPace blanket,piece of plastic sheet, etc. You can

cover a tent with a large piece of plas-

tic wrap, securing the ends of the

material at the corners with cords and

a small rock (Figure 7) so it will not

blow off. This witl also create a dead

air space betr,r,een tain cotrer and tent.

Doing so will help keep out the ele-

ments and help hold in heat.

evening, our first activity wascalled "ratilesnake swat," Thisgame is accomplished by form-ing a circle of about eightpairs-dads and lads. One pairis selected to start. Both partici-pants are blindfolded then spunaround inside the circle formedby the other plavers. Next, thedad is given rolled up newspa-per, which is used to swat with,The boy is gir,en a small canwith pebbles in it to ratile when-ever the dad said "ratt1e."

The object is for the boy torattle his can as the dad tries toswat the rattle. The secret isthat after the first raitle, theblindfold is removed from theboy, so he can easiiy arroid beinghit. After a few frustrating miss-es by dad, the dad swiichesplaces with his son. However,the boy is handed a heaviernewspaper. Now envision a boywith a hefty newspaper who cansee and a blindfolded dad withhis rattler. You can figure outfor yourself the fun this gamecan provide.

After playing other interest-ing games such as this, the meet-ing can be ended with a devo-tional, which relates to father-son relationships. We get many

Rangers Ieaders from theseevents.

Boys enjoy seeing them-selves on television, regardlessof how meaningless the activity.This can be done by videotapingthe Rangers during their activi-ties. Plays are particularly funfor the boys. For example, planan outing at someone's houseand invoive the boys in a play.Afterward play the video for theboys to watch. Watch the boys'faces during the video and youwill see the delight they have inwatching themselves.

After showing the home-made video, share how great theboys looked. Ask them howthev felt when they were watch-ing themselves. They all will tellyou they were great and it was alot of fun. Then remind theRangers that God feels exactlythe same way when He seesthem sharing His Word withtheir friends and that everythingthey do and say He reviews.Then add, "Don't we want tobring God this great joy?" Closem prayer.

enjoyed our "Mall TreasureHunt." Perhaps your Rangerswould too. The objective is forthe boys to unravel clues at themall. The commanders give theboys clues so the Rangers candiscover the "hidden trea-SUIES.,,

First, obtain permissionfrom the mall manager to do theactivity. Then go to the mall afew days before the event tostart making notes for clues,The treasures (answers to theclues) should not be hidden in

the stores to avoid disturbingcustomers. Just by windowshopping the Rangers should beable to answer all the questions.

The entire mall should bedivided into sections on a map.Each section should have aseries of questions that thePioneers need to answer. Hereare some examples: Question:Where would someone likelyfind a king? Answer: At theHallmark store. (The crownover the store name is easy tolocate,) List about 30 to 40questions on the back of themall map.

Once the event begins, eachboy should be assigned to a"buddy team." Each buddyteam, then, is appointed to anarea of the mall, as indicated onthe map. The teams must begiven a specific time and placeto regroup following the lrea-sure hunt. Before the treasurehunt, go over the rules on howto play the game. The fun thingabout this game is there are noIosers and all win.

After the teams haveregrouped, allow the boys toshare what clues they were ableto solve. You may wish to con-clude the treasure hunt as wedo: by sharing a Bible storyabout how God's Word gives usclues for discovering His willfor our lives. By now the boysare likely hungry, so treat themto a snack or a meal there at themall.

This winter you are boundto experience those days whenyou can't take the Rangers out-side. So try games such as thesewith your boys inside. Andremember, it may be lousy onthe outside ... but Sonny on theinside if you know ]esus Christas your personal Savior!

finally let me out, I swore I'd never try

to stop again. I went back to heroin.

My liabit grew from $5 a day to $50

a da1,. I had to steal to get that kind of

money. Life r.r'as killing me. I hadn't

had a bath for about I months. MY

clothes hadn't been washed for almost 3

years. i was a lilthy mess.

"lt's not worth living anY more," Imumbled to rnyself. Shooting a huge

overdose of heroin, I crawled into a big,

square garbage can to die.

It was a fitting piace for me. I laY

there spltting blood lbr 4 days-all 115

pounds of me in absolute miserY.

trash can atrd staggered home. I don't

know what my mother thought of me as

How do you feel about bats? Most

of us think they're kind of scary, don't

we.

When vou hear of bats, what comes

to your mind? Rabies? Blood-suckingvampire bats? Scary stuff? Did Youknow there are two sides to the bat

story? In fact, there are two sides to

bats. They are really mammals yet they

have wings and can fly like birds. They

have thumbs, a tail, toes, and big ears.

Did you ever hear the saying, "as blindas a bat"? Well, it's not true. Most bats

have very good eyesight.

Bats can fly swiftly through the

darkest night without bumping intoanything. That's because God built into

them a kind of radar system. As a bat

flies, it makes high-pitched sounds we

can't hear. Its big ears catch echoes of

sounds bouncing off anything in itsway. It can even avoid wires as thin as a

human hair.Bats hang upside down with no

effort. God built them iust right so they

can sleep like that, usually hanging

from the roof of a cave.

The natives in Western Samoa

enjoy eating bats. They wrap a bat inleaves, bake it on stones in a ground

oven, and then serve it. What does ittaste like? Like greasy chicken, they

say. I'll take chicken, won't You?Vampire bats are small. TheY live

in the tropics and are the only kind that

live on blood. Megabats prefer flowers,

pollen, and fruit. Most bats live on

insects.

Now why did God make bats? Well,

probably because they love to eat

insects, like mosquitoes, that are harm-

the "bzzz" of a mosquito nearby, firstslap it then thank God that because of

His little bats, there are probably a lotfewer mosquitoes!

Warning signs are there for a rea-

son. One day a driver was tearing downthe highway at, or a little above, thespeed limit. Suddenly he saw a "sharp

curve" sign, with a 25-mile-an-hourspeed limit.

Oh, they can't be serious/ He

thought. So he iust slowed to about 40,

and barely made the curve on twowheels.

Yes, he should have obeyed thatspeed limit sign. It's wrong to break the

Iaw. And it can be downright danger-

ous,

The same thing goes for ignoringGod's warning system, He has posted

the Christian's way with all kinds ofwarning signs. Many of these are foundin His Word. But you don't see a warn-ing sign unless you look, do you? That'swhy it's important for us to read HisWord. "I have hidden your word in myheart that I might not sin against you,"said the psalmist in Psalm 119:11.

Every human being has a built-inwarning system from God; it's calledconscience. Some people ignore it so

often they cease to hear it. That's a bigmisiake, because it's there to help pro-

tect us from ourselves and from the liesofthe devil.

Besides a conscience, we who are

Christians also have the Holy Spiritdwelling within us, He warns us whenwe're about to do something wrong. Ifwe quench His voice, it's like drivingblindfolded on the freeway.

The Bible says, "We must pay more

careful attention, therefore, to what we

have heard, so that we do not driftaway" (Hebrews 2:1). God's warningsigns have been posted for oureternal benefit. To ignore them is sheer

can get to danger rvithout getting hurt.In the tor.vn rvhere I grew up, we

had a pond, After ser,eral days of freez-

ing weather, most of the church teens

would gather there after school. We'dsit down on a fallen tree and pull on

our ice skates. Smaller kids would runwith their sleds and beliy flop onto the

ice, skimrning across the slick surface.

Some of the older guys rvould start abonfire, using the dead wood lyingaround.

The ice was thick and dependable

where we were. But over by ihe bridgewhere the water ran in fast from theBarnegat Bay inlet, water rippledthrough holes in ihe thin ice.

"Watch me skate between thoseholes without going through!" one dar-

ing soul declared.

"You'd better not try it!" I called."That water is cold!"

"Don't worry about mel" heanswered. "Here I go!"

And off he sailed across the icewith sweeping strokes of his long legs.

We all stared after him, wondering ifhe'd make it. He didn't.

"Help! Help me!" he yelled. So

some of the older guys skated out, get-

ting in as close as they dared, andextended a branch to the shiveringdummy.

You'd have thought he'd learn, buthe didn't, Later he came back to thepond and did the same dumb thingagain. But ihe rest of us learned fromhis experience.

Unfortunately, a iot of us like to see

how close we can get to danger withoutgetting hurt. Likewise, we toy with mildtemptations that mighi lead us intosome real trouble, "Well, this isn't so

bad," we might say. "I don't see whythe church is so against it." Or, "I don'tsee what's so bad about the crowd I go

with."Others may see we're skating on

thin ice and try to warn us. Or we mayhear or read a Scripture verse that ringsa warning bell to us.

Do we brush it off and plungetoward thin ice and a miserable experience? And if already we've had a miser-able experience, have we learned any-thing from it?

The Bible warns Christian believ-ers, "Be very careful, then, how you-live, not as unwise but as wise, makingthe most of every opporiunity, because

the days are evil. Therefore do not be

foolish, but understand what the Lord'swill is" (Ephesians 5:15-17).

Warning Signs!When you drive, you see all kinds

of road signs-stop signs, yield signs,

slow signs, and sharp curve signs. Whatwould happen if you didn't stop ata stop sign and a motorist with theright-of-r,vay hit the intersection at50 miles an hour? You might end upwith a steering wheel wrapped around

I suppose there are a few things more fun than camp-ing in the snow.- "Hey Mike," you might say, "whY should I go out andmake myseif into a human icicle .,. especially when Icould stay at home and work on mv collection of postagestamps, featuring colorful butterflies from around theworld?"

You've got a point there. But look at some of theadvantages of winter camping:

# You get first pick of the campsites.* You don't have to worrv about ants (except

for the little furry ones).# You don't get very dirty.

It does, howevet, have certain disadvantages-proba-bly the biggest one being that you can freeze to death. Tomake the best out of your camp-out, it's best to avoid this.

remember if you're skiing forthe first time:

,. Skiing can be expen-sive, When you have a day toski, make the most of it. Plan togo early and ski ali day. Since afull day of skiing can be strenu-ous, make sure you'te in goodphysicai condition and paceyourself throughout the day.

rr* Take a sack lunch withyou. Most ski resorts haverestaurants, but they are usuallyquite expensive and overcrowd-ed.

rr* If you haven't skiedbefore, take some lessons beforeyou hit the slopes. Don't letfriends talk you into doing morethan you think you're ready for.Go at your own pace and don'tworry about being called a"chicken."

rrr* Be patient with yourselfwhile you'te learning. It takes awhile to get comfortable havingenormous slats of fiberglassstuck to your feet while wearingheavy boots that don't bend atthe ankles.rr| Dress warmly, and try to

something that snowdoesn't stick to, such asnylon wind pants. Don'twear jeans either, unlessyou scotch-guard orwaterproof them-theycan soak up snow like asponge.Lr+ Bring clothes tochange into for the ridehome, or wear layers soyou can remove the outerones. The most common shapeof the snowflake we are famil-iar with is the star-shapedflake; it is called the stellarcrystal. Snowflakes may beelaborate masterpieces or justsix plain arms sticking outinto the cold.

The stellar crvstal isformed in low clouds withIots of moisture when temper-atures are mild. Faliing to theground slowly, the itellarcrystals often interlock withother flakes. Slowing theirdescent then clinging to trees,fence posts. and cars to createthe perfect winter wonder-Iand.

Closely related to the stel-Iar crysta[ is the plate crystal,or more accurately called thehexagonal plate due to its sixsides. Often stellar crystalsand plate crystals will formtogether and create interesting

much iike a pine needle orsewing needle. It has sixsides-which you can't reallycount since they are sosmall-with pointed ends.Needle crystals may form ingroups but will usually breakapart on impact with theground.

Not so common, but stilisix sided, is the column crys-tol. It looks just like a minia-ture post. Column crystals areformed in the high cirrusclouds. On the wav downthrough the clouds they maypass through conditions thatare favorable for the formationof plate crystals. When thishappens the columns mayend up with a plate crystal onboth ends. Such snowflakes,then, are called cappedcolumns or tsuzumi crvstals.

Many times the sriow hasno discernible pattern to it

guish crystal. So don't getdiscouraged if you can't figureout any particular crystai.

Observing the types ofsnow that is falling is not justfor fun. Weather forecastersexamine snow types to givethem more informationon atmospheric conditions.Avalanche forecasters some-times sJudy snowflakes toassist them in determiningdangers in avalanche-pronEareas.

The next time it starts tosnow, don't forget to look forwhat type of crystal is earth-bound. Stick vour arm outand capture the flakes andtake the time to observe Lhebeauty of God's creati on.Don't wait until it has stoppedsnowing. Because once iheflake lands it starts a transfor-mation and begins to loose itsdistinct ive shape forever.

Suddenly, the phone rangand awoke lonathan from hisdaydream. "Hello!" Jonathananswered into the phone.

"Jonathan, this is Shelton.I just heard from the comman-der. He says that since wecan't have our survival camp-or-it that we can have a wintercamp-out and earn out WinterCamping Merit!"

"Hey, this is great!"Jonathan replied.

"You said it," exclaimedShelton. "We can have oursurvival camp later in the year.But a snow camp only comesalong once in a long time."

lonathan hung up thephone. Isn't this just like God,lonathan thought. He sets ourplans aside and gives us some-thing better.

Yes, the survival campwouid have been fun, but awinter snow camp will beeven better. And althoughbeing an athlete, adventurer, or

scientist would be an interest-ing life, fonathan was sure thatGod had something even betterplanned for his life.

Who knows, maybe Godwill allow him to travel theworld and see strange andunusual things. Maybe in histravels he will be able to par-ticipate in international sports.And wouldn't it just be likeGod to put him in a ministrywhere He could use his cre-ativity and scientific mind.Who knows? God does! @
