FROM THE TOP

WASHINGTON – Tax season can be

a dreaded time of year for many people,

but the Defense Department’s Military

OneSource offers the MilTax program to

ease filing stress for service members and

their families.

There is no need to worry about costs

in tax preparation because the services

are free. MilTax kicks off on Military

OneSource Jan. 22, offering electronic

filing via do-it-yourself software and

personalized support from a tax consul-

tant.

Those who qualify to use the free

MilTax program are active duty service

members and their families, Nation-

al Guard members and Reservists,

survivors and veterans who have left the

service in the last 365 days, said Kelly

Smith, DoD’s Military Community and

Family Policy program analyst.

Smith emphasized that whether filing

on one’s own or seeking out assistance

from a tax consultant, MilTax services

are available year-round for extensions

and circumstances unique to the military

community.

‘’It is important for service members

and families to know that they have

options when it comes to support during

tax-filing season,’’ she said.

‘’Services are offered well past the

tax deadline,’’ she said, noting that some

service members may file extensions,

have additional properties, are looking to

sell their homes and other situations that

are unique to military members.

‘’Tax consultants can let families

know how to maximize their refund,’’ she

added.

A particular advantage of using

MilTax is the military tax expertise that

the Military OneSource tax consultants

bring with them to each session.

They are certified public accountants

or enrolled IRS agents, she said. They

are knowledgeable about costs incurred

during permanent changes of station,

living in more than one state during the

year, how to navigate benefits survivors

may be entitled to and other military-

specific issues.

The tax consultants are up to date on

tax-law changes that would affect service

members.

‘’Something we’re constantly working

on and striving to do within military

community and family policy is to raise

awareness about the services that are

offered through Military OneSource,

so we’re constantly letting people know

what’s available, and that support is

essentially an entitlement to them to help

them live their best military life,’’ Smith

said.

To use MilTax beginning Jan. 22, visit

the MilTax website, call 800-342-9647 or

live chat to schedule an appointment with

a Military OneSource tax consultant.

Little Rock Air Force Base’s food service program has been selected as a finalist for the 2020 John L. Hennessy Food Service Excellence Trophy — an annual award presented to the best food service program in the United States Air Force.

The Hennessy Award is based on the entire scope of an installation’s food service program exhibiting excellence in management effectiveness, force readiness support, food quality, employee and customer relations, resource conser-vation, training and safety awareness.

The program has three essential purposes — promote excellence in custom-er service and meal quality by recogniz-ing operations and management; inspire high morale, motivation, mission support, and a professional image through pride and spirited competition; and improve management concepts and practices.

The award is named in honor of John L. Hennessy, one of the nation’s most capable and respected advocates of food services. Amongst many lifetime accomplishments, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Hennessy as chairman of the War Food Committee in 1943 to develop food service systems capable of sustaining millions of military personnel involved in the war effort.

After a long and successful career of leading food and service boards along with the president, his lasting task was to further improve military food service operations. One recommendation was to encourage military services to adopt a program of food service competition to inspire better management and command support of food service. Hennessy did not live to see his recommendation placed in action but his memory lives on in the annual Air Force Hennessy competition—a testimonial to his contributions in the food service field.

The Little Rock Hercules Dining Facili-ty will be competing against five other bases this year to earn honors as the best food service operation in the Air Force. In the last four years, the Hercules DFAC has won finalist honors three times and, in 2017, was selected as number one DFAC in the Air Force.

This past year, Little Rock Air Force Base’s food service operation served approximately 210,000 patrons, amassed over $2.2 million in sales and partnered with the U.S. Army to rescue a sustenance shortfall at Camp Robinson resulting in 25,000 critical meals being available to serve for our Army counterparts.

Being ready to project their craft worldwide, the team sent 62 services Airmen in support of the 19th Airlift Wing’s full-spectrum readiness exercise, ROCKI 20-01, and deployed 18 members to five hostile locations in support of combatant commanders abroad.

Finally, the Hercules DFAC has a

legacy of performance garnering AMC’s 2018 Sustainment Services Flight of the Year, boasting two top performers in the Arkansas Hospitality Association Top Chef competition, and most recently the DFAC was honored as a nominee for the 2020 Arkansas Food Hall of Fame by the State of Arkansas Department of Heritage.

Beyond the base, the operation has forged partnerships with Pulaski Techni-cal College’s Culinary Program and Two Sisters Café providing internship and training opportunities for services Airmen to upgrade their culinary weapon system and bolster the installation’s ties to the community.

The 19th Force Support Squadron, along with 19th AW leadership, will host a social at the Hercules Dining Facility Feb. 6, 2020, to welcome the judges and give them their first glimpse of the unit’s capabilities.

B efore they officially become a part of their unit, Enlisted Airmen new to the Air Force are required

to go through the First Term Airman Course, better known as FTAC, to transi-tion them into the operational Air Force.

“The number one way we help Airmen is by developing and transitioning them from a training environment into the operational Air Force,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Levi Hammock, 19th Force Support Squadron FTAC team leader. “The technical training aspect is important to their duties, but they also need to be effective Airmen in their units.”

While in FTAC, Airmen are briefed on different topics and programs such as professionalism, sexual assault preven-tion and response, honor guard, legal services, personal financial manage-ment, education initiatives, and outdoor recreation.

19th Airlift Wing leadership also visits the class to discuss and answer any questions Airmen might have.

“The FTAC program provides Airmen critical information to not only help themselves, but to be able to be a good wingman and help other Airmen,” Hammock said. “It refreshes them on different resources available on base and who to talk to if they need help. It’s also helpful for later in their careers when they become supervisors and have Airmen to care for.”

The course is be one of the first chances Airmen experience connectedness with a large group of their peers who are also settling into their first duty station. It also allows them to learn from Airmen in different career fields- broadening their understanding.

“FTAC creates an opportunity for Airmen to be connected with other Airmen outside their work center,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Brock Atchley, 19th Force Support Squadron career assistance advisor. “It allows them to share experiences, have someone to talk to, and network.”

More than one million military spouses across the globe support our lethal force, which is why it’s emphasized in the course for Airmen to continuously involve their families through the entire duration of their Air Force career.

“We have a spousal luncheon with the wing command-er,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sean Evans, 19th Force Support Squadron NCO in charge of FTAC. “It’s highly encouraged for non-military family members to be involved so they know what is happening on base and allows them to feel connected to the Air Force communi-ty.”

Balancing work and family life can be especially challenging for a new service member. FTAC instruc-tors try to personally connect with new Airmen and give them advice on maintaining their day-to-day life.

“If Airmen are having a hard time trying to balance work and family, I try to advise them to do their job to the best of their ability and finish tasks accordingly,” Evans said. “That way when you go home you can give 100 percent of yourself to your family and they know you’re actually there and devoted to them.”

It’s important for Airmen to know what resources are available to help tackle any challenge they may face or personal goal they choose to pursue — and Team Little Rock’s FTAC continues to lead Airmen to professional and operational excellence with that knowledge.

Jeffrey Wilson, 19th Force Support Squadron community readiness specialist, briefs Airmen during First Term Airman Course class on personal financial management at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, Jan. 16, 2020. While in FTAC, Airmen are briefed on different topics and programs, such as professionalism, sexual assault prevention and response, honor guard, legal services, personal financial management, education initiatives, and outdoor recreation.

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sean Evans, NCO in charge of First Term Airman Course, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Levi Hammock, FTAC team leader, speak with Airmen in class at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas, Jan. 15, 2020. n 1789 – George Washington, the commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, is unanimously elected the first president of the United States by all 69 presidential electors. The inaugural ceremony was performed on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street, and a large crowd cheered after he took the oath of office. The president then retired indoors to read Congress his inaugural address, a quiet speech in which he spoke of “the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” As president, Washington sought to unite the nation and protect the interests of the new republic at home and abroad. Of his presidency, he said, “I walk on untrod-den ground. There is scarcely any part of my conduct which may not hereafter be drawn in precedent.”

n 1918 –"Stars & Stripes," a weekly U.S. armed forces newspaper publishes its first copy. It reached over 526,000 readers during the first week and is currently still in production.

n 1941 – The United Service Organization, a civilian agency, is founded. The organization was formed to offer support for U.S. service members and their families, and sent many actors, musicians, and other performers to entertain the troops. In 1948, the original USO was disbanded, but formed again the following year, and still exists today, providing recreation, entertainment, children’s programs and other services to U.S. military families. Bob Hope made annual trips to entertain overseas troops from World War II through Desert Storm in 1991.

n 1976–An earthquake registering 7.5 on the Richter scale struck southern Guatemala. Although it lasted less than one minute, it left almost 23,000 people dead and over 76,000 injured. One-fourth of Guatemala’s population—1.5 million people—were left homeless. The quake destroyed 300 towns along the Motagua and Mixco faults north and west of Guatemala City. The Military Airlift Command transported medicine, water purification systems, blankets, clothing, fresh water, and construction equipment to clear roads and rebuild housing. Nine C–130s also delivered bulk fuel to support Army helicopters that flew mercy flights to remote sites within the country and delivered 696 emergency support personnel to Guatemala, including medical doctors, nurses, engineers, and communications experts.
