.COLLEGE AND CAREER

COUNSELING

CLASS OF 2017

Senior final transcripts were sent out to colleges July

1. Please note that colleges often take a couple of weeks

to process these final transcripts. The final transcript will

be sent according to the information you provided on

your senior exit survey (filled out in Naviance at the end

of the school year).

CLASS OF 2018

Use the summer months to research and visit colleges.

Use Naviance to research careers and possible majors and

conduct college searches and build your preliminary list

of colleges in “Colleges I’m Thinking About”. Try to

narrow down your list of colleges to five to eight

colleges by early August. There are many resources on

the PNHS College and Career website as well as a

comprehensive College Planning Guide to help with the

search. Students can begin applying to most colleges

starting August 1, 2017.

10 Tips for an Effective College Visit –

Finding the Right Fit

Try to visit a variety of colleges: public, private,

small, medium, large, etc.

Set up an official tour and admissions information

session on the college’s website.

Research the college before your visit. Know the

basic facts such as size of school, cost of attendance,

admission statistics, if they offer your program of

interest.

Pick up a student newspaper. This will clue you into

the important issues on campus and what students

care about.

Have questions of your own prepared.

Your tour guide will answer many of your questions

but take time to talk to other students on campus to

get a clearer picture of a school’s culture.

Make sure to visit the student center, a dining hall,

library, residence hall, athletic facilities, and other

academic facilities.

Ask about campus safety and any history of

on-campus incidents.

During the visit, take pictures and after the visit,

write down notes and your impressions: positive

and negative parts of the visit; important people you

met with; application tips.

If the college is a top choice, write a thank you card

(or email).

COMMUNITY

NEWS Plainfield North HS student to study

in Germany this summer Plainfield – Plainfield North High School senior Re-

becca Lau will spend some of her summer studying in

Germany after earning a scholarship from the American

Association of Teachers of German (AATG).

Lau is one of 44 students nationwide, and one of two

from Illinois, to earn the all-expense paid trip after scor-

ing in the 95th percentile on the Level 3 2017 National

German Exam for High School Students.

But she is not the first Lau to earn the trip to Germany.

Her older sister and a PNHS graduate, Rachel, won the

same scholarship in 2015.

The trip includes round-trip airfare to Germany from

New York; lodging with a host family; and the oppor-

tunity to study culturally and historically significant

places in Germany.

Rebecca said her older sister’s win didn’t influence her

when it was her turn to take the test.

“I thought it would be a great opportunity to immerse

myself in the culture,” Rebecca Lau said.

Lau was one of more than 20,000 students who took the

qualifying national exam. Later she answered several

short essay questions in German and English.

Finally, Lau sat for an interview with a committee made

up of high school teachers and college professors of Ger-

man.

“I feel honored to have this opportunity, and I want to

thank others who took the test,” Lau said.

Lau tries to speak German at home with her dad who

majored in German in college. Lau’s younger sister who

will be a junior this fall at PNHS is also learning Ger-

man.

Rebecca Lau also has a full schedule outside of the class-

room.

She plays oboe or alto saxophone with the high school

band, volunteers with her church and is involved in Girl

Scouts, the math and track teams at PNHS,

She is the vice president of the school’s German Club and

was recently inducted into the PNHS German Honor So-

ciety.

Lau’s German teacher, Jennifer Knop, said she was ec-

static when she found out Rebecca earned the trip.

“The quality that most amazes me about Rebecca is her

selflessness.” Knop said. “She has found the delicate bal-

ance between academic studies, hobbies and socializa-

tion.”
