Dear Zontians,
Thank You! Thank You! Thank
You!
The District 5 Conference on
October 18th – 20th was a great
success and I can’t thank you
enough for your support. I ap-
preciate everyone who was able
to make the trip to Defiance,
Ohio. We thoroughly enjoyed
having Zonta International Rep-
resentative Marguerite Akossi-
Mvongo from Cote d’Ivoire join
us. She was engaged, informa-
tive and a lot of fun. A special
thank you to the Defiance Club
and conference co-chairs Lacey
Spangler and Jennifer
Schwiebert for hosting the con-
ference and making it a suc-
cess. It was a great weekend
with lots of learning, sharing,
networking and celebration.
I am once again overwhelmed
with the generosity of District 5
Zontians. As Past Governor and
District 5 Zonta International
Foundation (ZIF) Ambassador
Ellen Spaeth shared at the con-
clusion of the conference, Dis-
trict 5 has contributed over
$94,000 to the ZIF this bienni-
um. We are well on our way to
achieving our goal of
$102,900! Thank you so much
for your generosity to help
women throughout the world.
Congratulations to the 2020 –
2022 District 5 board mem-
bers, who were elected during
the conference; Sarojini Rao –
Governor, Eileen Borchardt –
Lt. Governor, Sonia “Sunny”
Shellito – Treasurer, Caroline
Menezes – Area 1 Director,
Connie Kingsbury – Area 2
Director, Jenny Markovich –
Area 3 Director, Judy DeBe-
voise – Area 4 Director and
Nominating Committee mem-
bers – Maile Doyle, Margot
Hoffman and Lois Pierce. Our
district is in good hands for the
next biennium. Thank you to
everyone who stepped up and
ran for a position.
Congratulations to the Zonta
Clubs of Cleveland and Mid-
Ohio Valley for chartering Gold-
en Z Clubs. The Cleveland Club
is chartering a club at Cleve-
land State University and the
Mid-Ohio Valley Club is charter-
ing a club at Muskingum Uni-
versity. Thank you for engaging
college students in Zonta’s
mission and work.
There are a lot of great activi-
ties and events taking place
throughout the district in cele-
bration of Zonta’s Centennial
and for the 16 Days of Activ-
ism. Thank you for creating
this awareness and advocat-
ing in your communities and
beyond. Please remember to
share photos and articles
about these activities on ZI’s
“Share Your Story” web page.
Thanks for all you do for Zon-
ta. Have a wonderful holiday
season and Happy New Year.

Greetings, Zontians:
The following are updates
for Area 1 Clubs.
Area 1 hosted our District
5 Conference in Defiance,
October 18-20. I think we
can all agree the Defiance
Club did a wonderful job
hosting us. It was inspir-
ing for all of us to hear
about their Baby Box Pro-
ject, from the woman who
started this concept, and
for us to have a chance to
see the Baby Box and talk
with the firefighters who
will be the first responders
in taking care of babies
left in the Box.
Zonta International Repre-
sentative for our District,
Marguerite Akossi-
Mvongo, joined us in Defi-
ance, all the way from
Cote d’Ivoire in Africa. I
had the pleasure of
providing her transporta-
tion to and from Detroit
Metro Airport, as well as
hosting her in my home on
Sunday night and Monday
following the Conference,
placed by the Box, thanking
all those involved with this
project. They felt if they, as a
community, can save just
one baby, this Box was worth
it. The Defiance Club is very
proud of this achievement
and the support provided
from the Mayor and the com-
munity.
Findlay
The Zonta Club of Findlay

to their Christ-

Greater Sandusky
The Zonta Club of Greater
Sandusky is currently work-
ing on so many good things
we would like to share! We
were honored November
12th, with a proclamation
from the City of Sandusky, for
Zonta International’s 100th
Birthday.
The evening continued with a
dinner celebrating our mile-
stone. Eileen Borchardt host-
ed a “Silk Road” program,
with several Zontians sharing
presentations on our past,
present and Zonta of the
future. Marilyn Canada
joined us for the evening.

ter member, having the fore-

Greetings from Area 2! Our
teams have been very busy
sharing the Zonta mission
with their community activi-
ties this quarter. We had a

Cincinnati:
The Zonta Club of
Cincinnati’s
Founders Day celebration was
held on November 21. Nor-
mally, the club honors a cou-
ple of individuals on Founders
Day; however, in honor of
Zonta’s Centennial, every
member was recognized in
appreciation for their years of
service to the club. There was
a beautiful Centennial birth-
day cake, crowns and party
favors for members, table
decorations and balloons. All
members were entered into a
drawing for a beautiful framed
and matted Zonta emblem,
and raised $57 in the raffle
for a Ruthven print. Members
and guests posed for a group
picture, wearing their gold
crowns! (See photos, below.)
At the club’s dinner meetings,
on September 26, member
Jean Beirise was installed as
a Director on the Board of the
Zonta Service Fund
of Cincinnati, Inc.
Lynn Brown was
welcomed back to
the club as a re-
turning member.
At the October 24
dinner meeting,
Connie Kingsbury
(who was elected
to the 2020-2022 District 5
Board as the Area 2 Director
at the October Conference)
was installed as a Director on
the Service Fund Board for
the 2019-2020 Zonta year,
and Vicki Yeazel was installed
as the Zonta Club
and Board Secre-
tary.
Service & Advoca-
cy projects includ-
ed the following:
Mats for Home-
less Women –
The mats are
crocheted (they
can also be knit-
ted or woven)
using plastic gro-
cery bag strips

called plarn. They are soft,
easy to clean, lightweight, and
measure 3 feet by 6 feet. This
project can be worked on at
home, individually or in groups.
We hope the sleeping mats will
bring comfort to women who
are living in harsh conditions.
There will be a yellow Zonta
rose woven into each mat, to
remind the women that we as
Zontians care.
Letters of Love – These notes
are for expectant mothers,
through the Cradle Cincinnati
project. Founded in 2012,
Cradle Cincinnati’s mission is
to address the very high infant
mortality rate in Hamilton
County, which is in the top
10% mortality rate of commu-
nities in the entire country. The
majority of our infants who die
are born to single mothers who
report that they don’t have the
social or emotional support
they need. We write letters of
encouragement which will be
hand-delivered to women,
during their prenatal doctor
appointments.
Tender Mercies Beauty Night –
The Zonta Club of Cincinnati
has adopted the women’s
group house at Tender Mer-
cies, who provides housing
and supportive services for
homeless adults with histories
of severe mental illness. Their
permanent supportive housing
model addresses the root
causes of homelessness,
thereby preventing a return to
the streets for our region's
most vulnerable people. On
November 14, members pro-
vided dinner and manicures for
the ladies.
She Screams Without Sound
Candlelight Vigil – The 32nd
annual vigil at the Hamilton
County Courthouse was held
on Tuesday, October 22. Zonta
has had a presence each year,
with Women Helping Women
and the YWCA. It was a mov-
ing memorial for victims who
have been killed by their part-
ners. A candle was lit for each
one by a family member or
friend. It was a beautiful ser-
vice and a reminder that these
ladies are never forgotten.
Zonta members brought our
Zonta Says No banner to show
our support.
Purple Light Walk – The 7th
Annual Purple Light Walk
(PLW) was held on Friday, Oc-
tober 4 on Fountain Square in
downtown Cincinnati. Zonta
Club of Cincinnati (ZCC) was
once again a Presenting Spon-
sor. The PLW mission is to
raise awareness about gender-
based and domestic violence.
There was a Resource Fair
consisting of 13 non-profit
organizations, including ZCC,
who had tables with infor-
mation about their organiza-
tion for both survivors and
victims. Member Terri Purtee-

Area 4 clubs.
Columbus:
It has been another amazing
quarter in the Zonta Club of
Columbus. Two new members
were inducted into the club
this quarter. Welcome, Sally

Lee!
The ten members of the club
who attended the District 5
Conference in Defiance great-
ly enjoyed the Zonta Interna-

50+ Year Member Shirlyn
Chaffin enjoyed the painting
class offered at the Confer-
ence in Defiance, on Saturday.
(See photo, next column.)
On Sunday, a memorial tribute to
the club’s Emeritus Member Flo
Landis (see photo, below) was
given by Nancy Mayle and Jan
Wilhelm at the Memorial Service.
On October 25 nine members
and spouses worked with others
in the community doing yardwork
on “Make a Difference Day” at
the new Turning Point Domestic
Violence Shelter in Delaware,
Ohio. The club also contributed
$15,000 to help make the shel-
ter possible.
Supporting the “Girls on the
Run” gave the Columbus club a
chance to display the “Zonta

on the successful, first annual Deli-

“The club is delighted by the

donations of money and

decorated a bra according
to their theme of choice,

about Zonta International and how ZI
works with the United Nations Associa-

She also talked about the upcoming 16
Days of Activism. Pat gave everyone a
bookmark noting the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals. (See photo, above,

Preparations are in fervent motion
for the upcoming CSW64 Confer-
ence March 9-20, 2020, NY, NY.
A full agenda for Zonta’s participa-
tion is being planned for March 9-
20. Usually, Zontians attend 4-5
days. I encourage any Zontians in
the district to contact me at ei-
[email protected] if you
are interested in attending this
year’s events. You will need to pay
100% of the fees; however, aside
from meals and hotel/b&b shar-
ing, most events / parallel events
are usually free. The Zontians you
meet are unforgettable. Peace
and warm wishes this holiday sea-
son. https://www.zonta.org/

A large portion of the UN Women’s
Parallel meetings will focus on the
UN’s Platform for action, to make
continued progress to address Goal
5: Gender Equality, with a race to-
wards its achievement by the 2030
deadline. 2020 will mark the 25th
anniversary of the Beijing Declara-
tion and Platform for Action (Beijing
Declaration), the UN’s greatest
agreement for advancing women’s
rights. Deliberate steps to involve
YOUTH and action coalitions to cor-
relate worldwide activities are the
2020 focuses.
The CSW64 UN Women will launch
the Generation Equality Forum, a
set of Action Coalitions of which ZI
supports to continue this effort,
with the rest of the world’s NGOs.
The dialogue continues to advocate
with NGO and UN council members,
country nationals who receive our
aid, and drive more positive
change.
ZI and the Soroptimists have laid
early groundwork already, to
achieve immediate and irreversible
progress towards gender equality.
They stated, in a collective docu-
ment to ECOSOC, “We must all adjust our
efforts to achieve the 12 Critical Areas of
Concern in light of the current internation-
al context. Climate change and natural
disasters disproportionately affect wom-
en. Austerity measures adopted after the
global financial crisis also have unique
effects on girls, women and their families.
Migration, especially due to conflict, politi-
cal instability, economic strife, disasters
and climate change, exacerbates existing
vulnerabilities and puts women and girls
at risk. The Beijing Platform for Action
directly addresses these challenges
through the Critical Areas of Concern
“Women and the Environment” and
“Women in Conflict”, among others.”

Volume 3, Issue 6
Hello Everyone:
It was great seeing so many
of you at the District 5 con-
ference in October. Thank
you all for your vote of confi-
dence in me and electing me
to be your next District Gov-
ernor for the Biennium 2020
-2022. I promise to do my
very best to serve you.
At the conference, I reported
that while I was dismayed to
see membership at the dis-
trict level drop by 6.6%, I was
heartened to see at least
three clubs grow their
membership and one break
even. As you may remem-
ber, we had a membership
challenge going wherein
Governor Margot and I
promised to donate $5.00
per member of the club
that had the highest per-
centage growth. I am very
happy to announce that
the winning club was
Cleveland, with a net per-
centage growth of
14.29%. We also
recognized Angela
Brokmann from
Louisville, for re-
cruiting five new
members. Con-
gratulations,
Cleveland and
Angela!
To keep the
momentum
going, the Dis-
trict 5 Member-
ship Commit-
tee decided to
run another
challenge, from
November 1, 2019
to February 29,
2020. Clubs that
recruit two or more
new members will be
recognized at the Area
meetings. We will also
recognize the Zontian
who sponsors the most
number of new members.
So, go forth and recruit,
recruit, recruit. Please re-
member that Membership
is everyone’s responsibility.
Thank you,
— Sarojini Rao ZI District 5 Lt. Governor
& Membership Chair

JMK Scholarship Award
This year’s District 5 JMK scholarship
awardee was submitted by Zonta Club
of Findlay. Laura Harper is an under-
graduate student from University of
Findlay Business Department, major-
ing in Accounting & Finance and mi-
noring in Economics. She serves on
several academic organizations and is
an active member of the Future Lead-
ers Initiative. As an undergrad, she has
received several scholarships and
awards, including the Woodrow Wilson
Visiting Fellow Ambassador award.
From her first semester at the Univer-
sity of Findlay till today Laura has
stayed on the Dean’s list, but has still
found time to volunteer her service to
her community. Her professor claims
that Laura has clear vision for her fu-
ture, but also a heart of gold. District 5
congratulates Laura Harper on winning
this year’s JMK Scholarship award.
Women in Technology Scholarship
Lee Marletto is the District 5 winner of
the Women in Technology Scholarship,
with ZI’s pilot program this year. Her ap-
plication was submitted by the Zonta
Club of Ashtabula. Lee Marletto is work-
ing towards an Associate Degree of Ap-
plied Science, focusing on Information
Technology at Kent State University. She
has overcome several health issues to
pursue her passion in technology. At first
not confident in her IT skills, she taught
herself web design, graphic design and
highly technical forms of digital photog-
raphy. But as she developed these skills,
she finally decided to major in Infor-
mation Technology. She now champions
the ability of people with disabili-
ties to have access to technology.
Lee Marletto is an example why ZI
started the Women in Technology
Scholarship award. District 5 con-
gratulates Lee Marletto on winning
this year’s Women in Technology
Scholarship award.

Diane was one of the most active members of our Club
and a fierce advocate for women. She was instrumental
in getting the conversation
started in Toledo, for mak-
ing Toledo a CEDAW City.
She was passionate, with
a calm and kind demean-

way to help others, even if
she just met them. She
truly lived by Zonta’s code.
Toledo Club members and
guests enjoyed an evening
cruise on the Maumee
River on October 15, while
enjoying munchies, wine
and the city lights. Almost
$1,000 was raised for the
Club’s service projects.
Club members gathered at
the home of Adrianne

distributed to Club mem-
