f Setting the ScaleSetting the Scale
For ILC: produce 4 to 6 cryomodules in the next 4 years ~ 50 cavities used; additional needed for development and testing
International (ILC/GDE) coordination: S0 ‘tight loop’ task force:
• Process and re-process the inside surface of a limited number of cavities, repeatedly, testing each time… (~100 procedures/year for several years)
• Answers due 08, 09 guidance for a final gradient recommendation
S1 ‘cryomodule’ task force :• 31.5 MV/m OPERATING cryomodule
S2 ‘string test’ task force :• Put it all together• Run ILC-like beam• Various critical tasks

f SCRF Cavity Gradient RDSCRF Cavity Gradient RD
“S0 / S1” GDE charge: Provide the information needed
to make a gradient decision for TDR. Challenge: Cavity surface processing
variability (yield) Secondary: the rest of the fabrication effort
• From the mine to the cryomodule (‘production-like RD’)
Focused charge, well defined deliverable, broad base, expensive task with excellent cost / benefit
US labs are heavily involved but expertise is scattered; Fermilab is playing a “catch-up” game.
![Page 4: F Status and Plans for SRF Facility Sergei Nagaitsev May 18, 2007.](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022032607/56649ebb5503460f94bc2db7/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

f String test (S2)String test (S2)
Charge: Recommend a string test strategy;
Expensive Referendum on the SRF readiness for the ILC Many duplication / competition /
standardization issues between DESY, KEK, FNAL
Cross threaded with mass-production issues, ‘regional interest’ and lab ambitions
R or D? What is the balance?

f Materials & SRF R&D infrastructureMaterials & SRF R&D infrastructure
Quality assurance: Characterization of Nb sheet from vendors Surface properties: oxide layer, inclusions, and scratches (eddy
scanner) Measure material composition (RRR, chemical composition, etc) Measure Nb mechanical properties ( ie crystal structure)
Surface processing studies Electropolish and BCP process studies (single cell programs) Surface contamination studies
Infrastructure: (ANL, TJNL, FNAL, Cornell, MSU, etc…) Labs for handling HF and processing and test of single cells Materials equipment ( RRR measurement, INSTRON, EM microscope,
SIMS.
Weld studies ( e.g. crystal structure, contamination, TIG welding) ILC is helping to upgrade existing national capabilities but much of
this is funded by other sources

f SummarySummary
Cavities & Cryomodules are cost drivers for ILC SRF R&D requires extensive infrastructure The U.S. is making good use of existing SRF
assets as well as new ANL/FNAL infrastructure to rapidly expand U.S. SRF R&D capabilities
Infrastructure is needed to support: GDE S0, S1, S2, S4 goals U.S. Industrialization of SRF technology
We have made a lot of progress in FY06-07 We have ambitious plans for FY08 and beyond Effort is resource limited
