Supplement to the primary source Evaluate before you invest Slide 10 Forward & Introduction Front Matter What is front matter in a book Also known as prelims It is the first and smallest section of the book Uses lower case roman numerals Front Matter includes: Endorsements Dedication Forward Introduction Slide 11 Forward & Introduction Endorsements Endorsement Always positive Primary purpose to promote the book Serves as a 1-3 sentence recommendation of a book Review Can be positive or negative Primary purpose to inform the reader to help make a decision to spend money and time on a book Structure includes an opening, a brief summary, and an evaluation Slide 12 Forward & Introduction Dedication What is a dedication? A dedication page is a page in a book that precedes the text, in which the author names the person or people for whom he/she has written the book. Slide 13 Forward & Introduction Forward What is a forward? Usually written by someone other than the author or editor. Often, a foreword will tell of some interaction between the writer of the foreword and the story or the writer of the story. A foreword to later editions of a work often explains in what respects that edition differs from previous ones. Slide 14 Forward & Introduction Introduction What is an introduction? A beginning section which states the purpose and goals of the writing. It is generally followed by the body and conclusion It may also explain certain elements that are important to the writing if the explanations are not part of the main text. It comes from two Japanese words: tsu meaning harbor; and nami meaning wave. Slide 20 Tsunami Is It Predictable?
