Spring has come early to East Ten-nessee. In addition to the greatrunning weather, I really look for-

ward to track and field sea-son. I enjoy track andfield meets as much as foot-ball time in Tennessee.

We experienced the 50th

running of the VolunteerTrack Classic (VTC) atthe Tom Black Track onthe campus of the University of Tennes-see. We watched over 1,100 highschool athletes from nine states com-peting over the two-day period. Iespecially enjoyed watching the BoysMile Run and the 4x100 relays. One ofthe highlights of the event was to wit-ness Bob Neff, one the founders of theKnoxville Track Club, explain discus-throwing technique. His passion for

the KTC remains ever strong.

Thanks go to Steve Luper and StanleyUnderwood for their workin making the event hap-pen. A special thanks toChad Culver, the VTCmeet director and BobbyGlenn, KTC ExecutiveDirector, who bothworked to make the 50th

year of this event a suc-cess. The VTC is the start of track andfield season for the KTC.

We are starting the Youth AthleticProgram this summer. Though the KTCYouth Athletics Program has existed forfifty years, most Knoxvillians are notfamiliar with our history in Youth Pro-gramming. As well, many young peoplein Knoxville have not experienced the fun

and challenge ofthe program.

We have anopportunity toshare our pas-sion for track and field and health andfitness with an underserved populationin our community. The Knoxville TrackClub Youth Athletics Program is avail-able to all youth who want to partici-pate. We start this program becauseso many kids need the opportunity toparticipate. The founders of the KTChad a vision for introducing the youthof Knox County to track and field. Wemust continue the work that has beengoing on for fifty years, and we musthonor the work done before us.Therefore, we honor the work of ourfounders and those before us by con-tinuing this program.

Springtime brings out the best inour sport and I’ve gotten to ex-perience it all on a whole new

level this time around.

This was my first timein the barrel planning forand working the CovenantHealth Knoxville Mara-thon. I gained a real first-hand appreciation for whatit takes to pull off an eventof this magnitude. It’s truly a year-roundeffort involving hundreds of volunteerswho work tirelessly to make sure we puton the best event possible. While JasonAltman is out front and does a fantasticjob, there are so many other energeticpeople working behind the scenes. Whatreally impressed me was how everyonepitches in and goes the extra mile to makethis such a class event.

On the track, we just finished the 50th

Annual Volunteer Track Classic highschool invitational track and field meet.Same goes here as I gained a much

greater understanding ofwhat it takes to make a meetof this size (1115 athletesfrom 85 teams in 9 states)and prestige happen. OurKTC Officials Associationis stellar and something tobe proud of; the meet ran

like clockwork thanks to their expertiseand the efforts of an enthusiastic volun-teer base. Chad Culver, our meet direc-tor, did a great job heading it up. I had thepleasure of seeing and talking to Mr.Bob Neff, one of the founding fathers ofthe KTC at the meet. Bob was therefrom dawn to dusk enjoying this meetwhich goes back to the very foundationof our club.

Last but not least, our trail racingseries is rolling along with IC King ofTrails and Wild West Ridge Run goingoff in the last month. I’m partial, but theTreadin’ Trodden Trails group of volun-teers is truly amazing. Everybody loveswhat we’re doing and goes over the topto support these events. Even whenwe’re not on the trails, this group isanxious to jump in and help the club inwhatever we’re doing (when I was look-ing for volunteers to staff our booth at theMarathon Expo, TTT was all over it!).

The long and short is we have amarvelous club with lots of diverse ac-tivities constantly going on. Thank youfor being a part of it!

As I write this, the rain poursdown. It’s been doing so sinceyesterday morning. And to be

honest, that’s okay with me; if it wasgorgeous and sunny, I’d be torn betweenplaying outside or slaving away at thecomputer finishing this issue of Foot-notes. Actually, it wouldn’t even beclose; I’d be outside in a heartbeat.

But I’ll really hate to see the April pagefall from my calendar to the floor. Everyyear I hate it. While I relish the arrival ofspring — overdue and balky this year —I know that all too soon, the humidity andthe mosquitoes, not necessarily in thatorder, will make being outdoors less fun.

Too, changing the calendar pagesmarks the passing of time, time inevitableand seeming to speed up almost daily. Igrew aware of this phenomenon at a

much younger age, yet I’m startled, al-most awed, that the acceleration neverslows; indeed, it gets faster and fasterwith the passing of each year.

I was reminded of this recently whenmy dad, now 89 and always seeminglyindestructible and ageless, had to haveemergency abdominal surgery. Fortu-nately he’s recovering nicely and shouldbe back at it before too long.

But note the word I used: ageless. Myfather is, of course, not ageless; none ofus are. Agelessness is a myth, as is theinvulnerability of certain runners. Sure, some runners appear that way. Whileout on the marathon course in SouthKnoxville, I encountered a friend whowas clearly not having a great day. Then, just as my astonishment peaked — I’dnever seen this man looking anything but

awesome in all the years I’ve known him— he muttered under his breath to methat he’d competed in a 50-mile race... theday before the marathon! I guess I bettercut him some slack.

But, truly, the same lack of agelessnessand invulnerability that ended my run-ning career six (6!) years ago will stalkand eventually cut down even the mostRedwood-like among us. The tallest, thestrongest, the fastest, everyone will fallvictim to the most relentless competitorof all, Old Father Time.

And much like the irrevocable truththat all of us will someday have to stoprunning, it’s also true that all of us willdie. Intellectually those are not difficultconcepts to absorb. But when that imper-sonal concept takes a face — perhaps theface of a loved one, like my Dad — itceases to be intellectual and becomesreal. And personal. Yes, everyoneeventually does have to slow down, stoprunning, and, yes, die (unless death over-takes us while running, which isn’t thatbad an idea, when you think about it...)

But death? Just how final is it? It’s notabout cemeteries. What lies in repose, whether in a casket underground or inashes spread lovingly on a cherishedspace somewhere, are only things. Bonesand ashes are not the essence of a person. Those essences live on elsewhere.

My belief is that we don’t live on in acelestial cloud surrounded by spirits ofthose who have gone before. But we dolive on. We live on in the hearts andminds of those we have touched, thosewe have loved and who loved us. Thosewhose lives we have changed and whochanged us.

For most of us, that group in whosehearts we live on includes our families. But family is not limited to those to whomwe are related by blood. It also includesthose we’re related to by sweat and tears, perhaps the sweat and the tears we shedwhile pounding the pavement and thetrails, by working together and alone toimprove our fitness, to feel better aboutourselves and others, and to enable our-selves to better tread this celstial ball ofclay and granite, for however many pagesour own personal calendar contains.

Tragedy in Bostonby Bob Godwin

The third Monday in April—Patri-ots Day, the day of The BostonMarathon, the oldest and most

famous race on earth—the last place Iwould have expected a terrorist attack.

There were 26,000 runners from 96countries in an event with thousands ofvolunteers and first responders at thefinish.

The twisted motive and logic of suchan act is unfathomable to me. It is beyondmy comprehension—but enrages me. Ilack any capacity for forgiveness for theperpetrators. I thirst for justice.

At the same time as I watched picturesof the carnage with horror, I felt bound-less admiration for the police, medics,

National Guard, firemen, medical per-sonnel and spectators who rushed to aidthe injured.

Intermittent flashbacks of my threeBoston Marathons in-truded: the camara-derie born of monthsof preparation; thecountless miles run inall weather; the ex-citement of the event;the thrill of being apart of a historical racepeopled with legends over its life; thetraditional points along the coarse; thesupport of a crowd of spectators esti-mated at one million souls.

I had five seconds of my fifteen min-

utes of fame on national TV running upHeartbreak Hill. A runner immediatelyin front of me grabbed two cups of water, drinking one and dumping the other overhis buddy’s head—and right behind them

was Bob Godwin.

I feel resentmentthat the thrill of anevent I love celebrat-ing personal commit-ment, honoring Pa-triots, welcomingrunners from all over

the world, will never be quite the same.

I am overwhelmingly sad, but buoyedby the countless acts of kindness andbravery which followed this cravenattack.

material on a regular basis?” Based on theoften paperthin articles I write, the an-swer is that sometimes it’s hard.

But regular readers of Footnotes havenoticed we’ve begun printing race writeupsfrom our Treadin’ Trodden Trails races, much as we’ve always done for KTCroad races. Not only does this affordopportunity for our energetic race direc-tors to put their own personality intoaccounts of their races, but it allows clubmembers more than a singular glimpse ofwhat goes on at a trail race. Besides, itcuts down on my work load, as well!

TTT is five races into the 2013 sea-son, having just completed the WildWest Ridge Run (see page 26), andlooking forward to our annual campoutand tour of Panther Creek State Park onMay 18. For the first time, we’ll beoffering a short option at Panther, a fivemile jaunt through the forest that pre-sents participants the identical downhillstart, lakeside traverse, Point Lookoutclimb, and screaming downhill finish thatthe ten-mile runners enjoy. It’s also achance for Knoxvillians to explore whatmay to many be a previously unvisited gemof Tennessee’s vast state park system.

After Panther, we’ll be spending twoof our races, the Stalk Your Quarry raceon June 2 and Hann Jive Six Miler on July14, touring some of the extraordinarytrails, some of which are brand new, inKnoxville’s much-envied Urban Wilder-ness Corridor. We’ll also head south tocheck out relatively unknown TVA trailsnear Greenback in our June 22 LakeshoreTrail Trek, and make a return to HawRidge, this time on a hot Saturday after-

Roaring Along Through 2013noon in August, for one of the morelongstanding trail races in the regiion, theHaw Ridge Trail Race.

Labor Day weekend will be a bitter-sweet time for TTT folks, as we head upto Norris Dam State Park for our annualDam Hard Trail Race. Since our lastvisit, we lost our race director, a manwho was a big part of the heart and soulof the committee, Kerry Trammell, whopassed away in January. It wasn’t justthe huge amount of work he and his wife,Leslie, put into preparing for and stagingthe race — the word “huge” doesn’t dojustice to how much they did — it wasthe spirit and fun and family atmospherethat permeated that race, perhaps more

than any on our circuit. We’re gonnamiss that dude, maybe never more thanthat weekend.

But there’s still more to 2013. LateSeptember will find us traipsing up to theBig South Fork NRRA for the 20thAnniversary edition of the BSF 17.5 MileTrail Race. It’s the best trail race in EastTennessee, one not to be missed.

We’ll conclude the season with re-turns to North Boundary in October andConcord in November. And by then,we’ll be planning for an even more event-ful, rewarding, and surprising 2014 trailracing season. Come join us! So manytrails, so little time...

As I write, I just finished the Cov-enant Health Knoxville HalfMarathon. I have run the full

marathon, manytimes, but decided torun the half this year.It was everything Ithought it would be.The training was easy. The run was wonder-ful. I was only justgetting a little tiredwhen I got to the“fort”. The “fort” is its own animal andmy pacing did slow...but then it’s OVER.Whoo Hoo! 13.1 and done. I felt exhila-rated when I ran into the stadium. Mydear husband, “Joe Joe” as I call him wasalso running the half and he was waitingfor me at the end of the ramp. He wasglad he did not have to wait for hoursfor me, like he has in the past where Ihad run the full marathon. “Joe Joe” hasa great finish time too. He is in anentirely different league than me whenit comes to runners.

I had a terrible marathon experience inChattanooga, my fault, not the race’sfault. I am retired from marathons. It hasbeen 6 months without the marathontraining and all rest, diet and planning thatgoes along with running a marathon. Ipassed that pacer booth at the marathon

expo. The pacer shirts were really nice....

I got to meet one of the speakers at theCHKM expo, PeteThomas. He was theat home winner ofseason 2 of “The Big-gest Loser”. I am abig fan of that show.I find it inspiring. Ifound his story to bemost compelling. Hehad a rough upbring-

ing, one that would mentally cripple mostpeople. He has turned his weight, and hiswhole life around. I got to run a little withhim. We chatted for a while during therun but then decided to focus on the race. The talking was escalating both of ourheart rates.

I pulled a few feet ahead of Pete andit looks like I stayed that far ahead of himthe rest of the race.

I too lost a large amount of weight andI too felt it had a lot to do with getting myhead straight, just like Pete did. Pete said,“ You can’t outrun your mouth.” Whichbrings me back to part of the reason I quitthe marathons. All that running was alittle built in excuse to eat the wrongthings. My calories may have been OK,but the nutrition stunk. What ended up

happening was I had very little weight lossdespite putting in miles and miles of train-ing. I understand stressing the body to thatextent can be counterproductive to weightloss. For me, that proved to be the case.

So I decided to run a few half mara-thons and see how it went. Training wasgreat. I was able to train harder. “Joe Joe”put together a very difficult plan, or atleast it seemed difficult to me. My nextgoal race is the Provision Health &Wellness Dogwood 5k. This course ismy faster 5k for me, my PR there is30:27. My goal is to run 5k in under 30minutes. It is sort of a bucket listproject for me.

What is it that Yoda says, “Do or donot, there is no try”?

Tomorrow the training is an intensetrack workout. I am so excited. (Saidtongue in cheek.)

We all have different paths that havebrought us together to the KnoxvilleTrack Club. Running has a cleansingeffect for most of us. A don’t worry, justrun approach to it. And of course we allhave our goal races. Since KTC is a non-profit, it depends on volunteers to keepthings going. My volunteer job, amongmany, is to help put willing volunteerstogether with KTC races. Helping out ata KTC race is fun, easy and rewarding. Ithelps to keep a sport that I love going inour community. If you are available tovolunteer, please let me know [email protected] or use the volun-teer link at www.ktc.org

Is Plant-Based Protein aGood Choice For You?

by Lee MurphyMS-MPH, RD, LDN

Licensed Nutritionist

Plant-based diets have become in-creasingly popular in both themedia and in certain athletic circles.

Whether or not an individual truly choosesa “vegetarian” lifestyle, there are signifi-cant benefits to incorporating more plant-based foods into one’s diet. But are youworried that the protein found in non-meat sources will be the quality you needfor your lifestyle and training purposes? If so, please read on…

The Benefits of Vegetarianism

Choosing to regularly consume a plant-based diet is a very personal and uniquedecision, covering a wide range of dietarypreferences and issues. While health is amotivator for many, others cite signifi-cant factors such as religious beliefs, inhumane animal conditions, or reducingone’s environmental impact or carbonfootprint.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietet-ics (formerly the American Dietetic As-sociation) confirms that well-plannedvegetarian diets are healthful andnutritionally adequate for peoplethroughout all stages of life. These diets (varied, thoughthey may be)have severalhealth advantages includinglowering blood pressure lev-els, lowering cholesterol lev-els, and reducing risks of heartdisease, hypertension, and type 2 diabe-tes. Statistically, vegetarians tend to havea lower body weights and lower overallcancer rates, lower intakes of saturatedfat and cholesterol, and higher intakes ofmany beneficial micronutrients andphytochemicals.

Nutritional Concerns withPlant-Based Diets

While there seems to be little debatethat well-planned plant-based diets canpromote optimal health and wellness, there are some valid nutritional concernswhen restricting all animal prod-ucts—namely, protein. It istrue that animal-based pro-teins are generally well-ab-sorbed and utilized by thebody for various purposes;however, many sourcesof animal protein can alsobe high in unhealthy fats andcholesterol. In contrast, one of the big-gest misconceptions regarding plant-based diets revolves around the topic ofplant proteins.

Some believe that it is difficult toconsume adequate protein levels with astrictly vegetarian diet, especially for anathlete with higher protein demands dueto training loads and recovery. But whilemost plant proteins are low in certainprotein compounds, it is relatively easy toachieve an adequate intake of protein by

including a variety of whole plantfoods. Legumes, soy foods,

dairy, nuts, and seeds are par-ticularly rich in proteins. Inaddition, whole grains (likequinoa and whole grain rice)and vegetables (like spinachand green peas) can be good

sources of protein as well.

Of note, other crucial nutrientsthat merit consideration when consider-

ing vegetarian eating include calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, andomega-3 fatty acids. These specificnutrients should be accurately evalu-ated in the vegetarian diet as well inorder to assure adequacy. Supple-

ments (or the addition of respectivefoods) need to be considered if aninadequacy is discovered.

It is important to recognize that thefact that a diet is plant-based does notnecessarily mean that it promotes health.

It is possible to displace essen-tial nutrients when low nu-

trient-dense vegetarianfoods (such as somesweets, baked goods, sweetened beverages, and“junk foods”) are regularly

chosen. The benefits of aplant-based diet come from

choosing an abundance ofwhole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.

Not Ready?

If you aren’t ready to go “hard-core”vegetarian, there is no reason you cannotstill reap some of the many benefits ofplant-based eating by incorporating sev-eral vegetarian-based meals into yourweekly diet. So, don’t be scared to “goveggie”—you can still meet all your pro-tein needs when you plan accordingly!

I’ve always thought that if there isone race on the KTC schedule thatno club member should miss, it’s

Expo. It has 35 years of tradition. Ithas both a 10k and 5k, so it is easy forthe whole family to participate. Thereare even special awards for family teamsin six categories: husband/wife, mother/daughter, mother/son, father/daugh-ter, father/son, and three generationteams. If you love running, I can’tthink of a better way to spend time withyour whole family on Memorial Dayweekend.

This year, however, there is onemore reason for you to join the fun onMay 25th: KTC will be donating pro-

2013 KTC EXPO 10k and 5kto Benefit The One Fund Boston

ceeds from this year’s event to TheOne Fund Boston. The One Fund wasfounded by Massachusetts GovernorDeval Patrick and Boston MayorMenino in the wake of the tragicevents that unfolded during this year’sBoston Marathon. The purpose ofthis charity is to raise money forthose families who were the mostaffected by the Patriot’s Day bomb-ing. You can learn more about thischarity at onefundboston.org.

There are three ways to be a part ofthis year’s Expo:

♦ 1. Go to ktc.org/RaceExpo.htmland register to run the 10k or 5k (my

personal favorite way to participate!)

♦ 2. If you’d like to volunteer, emailme at [email protected] is a big event on a loop course, sowe’ll need lots of volunteers to serve ascourse monitors and hand out water onthe course.

♦ 3. If you want to support TheOne Fund Boston, but just aren’t avail-able on May 25, you can go ktc.org/RaceExpo.html and click on RegisterOnline. There is a registration optionfor making donations that does not signyou up for the race.

See you at the Coliseum!

I was lucky enough to be able to travelto China in April. I had been anx-iously anticipating my trip to a land

with a language I couldn’t speak or read.I knew I would stick out, being blonde and above aver-age in height. I knew I’dspend a good deal of timealone, although totally sur-rounded by people. How-ever, it was an awesome ex-perience. I tried to sample allthe local cuisine and find outthe local cultures. The people, the scenery, and the amazing sights con-stantly awed me. I thought of my run-ning friends, but only fleetingly, as I

became absorbed by the world aroundme. Of course, that was until I heard thenews about Boston. I was a few hoursbehind and luckily could check on folks

via facebook to find if every-one was safe. I immediatelybecame homesick. I havenever felt such a need to be ata Wednesday Night Run andsurrounded by my runnerfriends.

Running friends are reallyunlike any other friends. We

know what it’s like to dodge a thunder-storm, snowstorm, and a hailstorm.Occasionally, I’ve had to avoid a (bleep)

storm. However, I’ve never had to dealwith fear that those runners, spectators, volunteers, and first responders had toexperience. I needed my running friendsto help me realize just how awful it was,and also, the miraculous stories of sur-vival and heroism. I counted myblessings on the treadmill that day. (can’trun outside in the pollution) and all of thisrunning community was on my blessinglist.

The number of tributes and individualcontributions to those touched by theBoston tragedy is overwhelming. I’m so

A Tale of Two JeffsA Tale of Two JeffsA Tale of Two JeffsA Tale of Two JeffsA Tale of Two Jeffs

Dr. Brantley BurnsOrthopaedic Surgeon, KTC Member

Wow! Thank you Runner’sWorld for my latest inspira-tions, coming from two

dudes named Jeff.

Jeff Galloway is arguably one ofAmerica’s running boom forefathers, butone latest piece of advice struck me ascurious. Now, I’m sure we all know thathill running is one of the variations sug-gested as a way to improve our overallfitness and running performance. Yes,it’s hard, maybe too hard for some. Yetdeep inside, I would say all of us know1) that it’s supposed to be hard and 2)precisely because it’s hard is why ithelps us.

Of course, when I say hills, I meanuphills. Downhills do have effects on ourbodies, but that’s a different set of topicssuch as quads training, knee pain, andimpact on certain joints.

His comment was“when you runhills…climbing shouldnever get so hard that youare huffing and puffing andcannot talk or sing.”

Correct me if I amwrong here, but don’t yourun hills in order to getshort of breath? If you still breathe easyon hills, you 1) are not really on a hill, 2)are not on a steep enough hill, or 3) areDoug Young. And what song could youeven blurt out anyway?

I didn’t know it at the time, but onebenefit of my taking Latin in high schoolwas that the difficulty of it helped mybrain make new connections and func-

(or Return of the Doo-Fi)(or Return of the Doo-Fi)(or Return of the Doo-Fi)(or Return of the Doo-Fi)(or Return of the Doo-Fi)

tion better. Latin was one of the hills ofmy early education.

As an aside - at a local private secularhigh school a few years ago, a discussionwas held between staff andparents on the merits ofhaving an optional classicaleducation track with ex-tremely difficult courses. One parent, who just sohappened to be a depart-ment chairman at the Uni-versity of Tennessee Medi-cal Center, opined that sucha difficult set of course offerings wasunnecessary, and he could attest to thissince he was Harvard trained and hadbeen through a similar system. Huh?!This was akin to Jeff Galloway telling youto avoid hills altogether.

Next is Jeffrey Ross, DPM, M.D.Yes, that’s right, podiatrist and medical

doctor. Anyway, Jeffnumber two made twowacky suggestions. Thefirst (and I’m not makingthis up) is to avoid pullingoff your running shoeswhile they are still lacedbecause this will injureyour ankle ligaments.Where should I start?

How about - I have treated thousands ofankle ligament injuries and not one oc-curred this way. Plus, if your ankles cantake the pounding of your body running, they sure as (heck) can take your shoepull off. And most importantly, Goddoesn’t make ligaments that weak.

His next misstep recommends avoid-ing bad casual shoes and choosing com-

fortable shoes with a good arch support. This is also curious to me. First, you’dhave to be on another planet not toacknowledge the current controversy/movement concerning minimalism. Theworn-out shoe becomes less supportiveand less cushioned and more like a barefoot. In orthopedics, we were alwaystaught (regarding shoe support) that lessis better, and the healthiest feet are insocieties with bare feet or open shoes likeflip flops. And, most runners I knowhave certain worn out shoes that aretaken off the running shelf and put on thecasual every day shelf as their go-tofootwear. Like that worn out, broken-inpair of jeans - so comfortable.

I suppose you could make the argu-ment that all new shoes are at the maxi-mum support and cushioning and dis-

comfort when first worn, and they gradually assumethe proper qualities by be-ing worn. And it’s not loston me that I’m soundinglike Chris McDougall’s“Born To Run.”

So then, do we buy newrunning shoes every 500

miles like the conventional wisdom orjust run 500 miles in our new shoes asquickly as we can to get them broken in?

I realize some of this is tongue-in-cheek, but it’s only funny because it’strue. But what I resent is being told tounlace my shoes before yanking themoff, or get rid of those worn shoes, ordon’t run hills since you will get out ofbreath, as if I can’t think for myself.Anyway, everyone knows it is bad ad-vice, but who is going to tell these Doo-Fi to shut-upp?? Don’t believe everythingyou read - please.

Think for yourselves. What wouldPre do? Do THAT and you’ll be ok. Becareful out there…

Georgena Terryby Bob Godwin

Georgena Terry is a name all bicy-clists, especially women, shouldrecognize. A native of Alabama

and a mechanical engineer who is pas-sionate about bicycles, she learned thefine art of bike frame building becauseshe could not find bicycles that fit herproperly.

It goes without saying that women arebuilt differently from men and that mostbikes are designed to fit male riders.Females tend to be shorter and havedifferent bodily proportions and simplyshrinking a bike frame to fit a shorterwoman leads to difficulty in achieving acomfortable position and overlapping thefront wheel on the forward stroke of thepedal with disastrous results when at-tempting a turn.

Ms. Terry began making bicycles forherself and her friends with appropriategeometry and sizes so that they truly fitthe rider.

She established her company in 1985,

intending from day one “to get morewomen on bicycles.”

Her bicycles incorporate shorter toptubes for easier handlebarreach, adherence to properseat angles for knee protec-tion and pedaling efficiency, narrower handlebars that alignwith a woman’s smaller shoul-ders, crank arms proportionedby frame size to protect kneesand provide for smoother ped-aling, and multiple fork rakesand wheel sizes that enhance perfor-mance and prevent toe clip overlap.

Her redesign of the bike seat wasrevolutionary, and her line now includessaddles for men as well as women.

She continues to ride about 6,000miles per year, according to her website, and she always is testing all manner ofproducts associated with bicycling.

I just received her summer catalogue.

It has bike specific clothing for womenthat is both attractive and functional in anincredible array of colors and styles. Many of her offerings can be worn straight

from the bike to other activi-ties in a stylish and attractiveway.

Interested in triathlons? She has the clothing. Longsleeve sun protection for therider—she’s got it. Color co-ordinated socks—she’s gotit. Attractive and functional

sunglasses—she’s got it. Gloves, sportbras, water bottle—she’s got it. Is yourinterest in pedaling around the neighbor-hood, touring Europe, doing the Ironman? She’s got the equipment to fit your choiceperfectly.

Her mission statement: We wantwomen to have fun cycling. That’s it in anutshell. Consequently, we make thingsthat fit better, look better, perform better, and make for happier riding occasions.

Her design philosophy: Fit, comfortand style.

While others now make worthy gen-der specific bicycles, Georgena Terrywas a pioneer and remains at the front ofthe pack. Check her website,terrybicycles.com. It does not list anydealers in Tennessee, but shows oneeach in North Carolina and Georgia. Shesays if you cannot find a local dealer, callat 802-861-7627 and “we’ll do our best towork with any dealer in your area toorder a Terry for you to test ride.”

Sunday March 10th at 9 am markedthe start of the first annual DirtyDouble Trail Marathon and Dirty

South Trail Half. This 13 mile loopcourse took runners on a tour of the trailsystems in South Knoxville's Urban Wil-derness. Those doing themarathon (aka, TheDirty Double) werelucky enough to dothe loop twice! Firstclockwise and then the eventougher counterclockwise direction whichhad most of the climbing in the latter halfof the loop.

The weather was sunny and springhad surely sprung with the warmingtemperatures. Though the start of therace was mild, things really heated up bymidday with highs near 80. The excitedracers listened to a few brief announce-ments about course markings and werethen sent on their way with a simple"GO!". Ample time was given for therunners to spread out by running thecourse clockwise, sending runners over

Sevierville pike and then quickly on toRedwood to the Hastie trailhead. Aftertraversing a couple miles of trails inHastie, they took the Marie Meyers trailfor the muddy and undulating trek over

to trails at Quarryand the first aid sta-tion at mile 4.5. Af-ter a jaunt through thetrails at Ross MarbleQuarry, runners took

the Will Skelton Greenway briefly overto the Forks of the River Wildlife Areaand another aid station at mile 7.

The course through Forks traversedold and new trails, leading runners to athird aid station at mile 9.5, where Dozermeets Burnett Creek Road. After quench-ing their thirst again, runners hit the Helixtrails belonging to Brian Hann. A beau-tiful loop on Chain Ring then sent runnersback to the start/finish area via LostChromosome. The staging area, like theaid stations, was full of cheering volun-teers and cowbells. Though halfmarathoners were finished, those doing

the Double were just halfway done withtheir day. The temperatures continued toclimb as the trail marathoners headedback for another tour of the Urban Wil-derness.

The day was full of mud, sweat, andcheering, and ended with 113 completingthe half and 34 the full. Derrick Gibson(1:35:16) and Casey Fields (2:02:55)had the winning times for the half, while Brad Adams (3:32:28) and Eden Slater(4:34:31) took victories in the full.

Many thanks to all of the hard work-ing volunteers, charitable sponsors andthe hard work of the AMBC for buildingand maintaining the Urban Wilderness. Their next trail work day is on May 19that Haw Ridge if you would like to pitch in. Go to http://www.ambc-sorba.org/news/ for more information.

A beautiful day and an amazing smallarmy of volunteers made for a great newrace for the Treaden' Trodden TrailsSeries. See you next year!

GOOD TIMES AT GREENWAYS

This year’s Greenways 5k racewas a stark contrast to last year’srace. First of all, we weren’t

hampered by spring break and theweather was perfect for running. Thecourse wasn’t exactly pristine. Therewere many spots on the greenway thatcould have been better, but abundantsunshine made up for the minor annoy-

Good times, too, were posted on the5K course with Ethan Coffey turning ina 15:58 time and Elizabeth Herndonposting a 17:59 time. The number ofrunners and joggers were up from lastyear because of the weather and nospring break. Our furry friends and

BRAVING THE FORECAST AT PROVISIONHEALTH AND WELLNESS DOGWOOD 5k

Although the forecast called for a100% chance of thunderstorms,450 braved the elements for the

chance to run the annual DogwoodClassic 5k.

Site set up began around 6am with lotsof chipper volunteers on hand to directrunners and show the true KTC spirit. As runners began to line up at the startline, executive director Bobby Glenn gavesome pre-race announcements. After atwo-count start and a loud bang of thegun, runners were off and moving. For-tunately for all involved, the rain had stillheld off.

Darren Brown ran a blistering time of14:47 to take the win for the day, whileElizabeth Herndon took home the prize

for overall female winner with a phenom-enal 17:17 time.

This year’s Wild West Ridge Runheld at Haw Ridge Park on April21 was a blast! We had 90 finish-

ers in the 7+ miles and thecrowd wasn’t disap-pointed, as we had apristine sunny dayaround 60 degrees, with super trail con-ditions, (thanks to the Friends of HawRidge staff who did a lot of workgetting the trail system ready!)

One of the defining characteristics ofthis course is the hills on Ridge Trailand Saddle, but, oh, what a view at thetop, and a cool drink of water just at theright time. Though it is one of thetoughest races around, it’s also a beau-tiful race, and it showcases one of East

Tennessee’s most used trail systems.

With a slightly modified course thisyear, the courserecords took a beat-ing, with two menfinishing in under anhour. First was Tay-lor Shoulders, win-

ner of two earlier TTT races this sea-son, who ran 57:09. Second was JonPeralto, also a previous winner on thisyear’s circuit, who covered the coursein 59:28. Tyler Smith was third male(1:06:17), followed by Masters winnerMatt Stegall, who clocked 1:07:46.

Top female was Masters runnerShelley Rabie 1:14:02), outtunningyounger competitors Karen Lloyd

(1:19:39) and Katie Kalian (1:19:48.)

As always, volunteers make thishappen. Many thanks to MichaeldeLisle, Chris George, Kathy Smith,Leah Jones, Laura Gearhiser, DarrenStanford and the host of Volunteerswho help make this the best raceever....Lots of energy here!

Special thanks to Cherokee Distrib-uting for providing post race Vidration,FritoLay for all the chips, Flowers Bak-ery for free bagels, Ingles, who do-nated strawberries, bananas, and or-anges, Tailwind, who provided oncourse hydration, and of course to ourfriends at Haw Ridge.
