THE STARTING LINEKnoxville Track Club * FOOTNOTES * November/December 2008 edition

In my last column, I dealt with thedeparture of a president and our plansfor reviewing and redefining the struc-

ture and mission of the club. This time I’llbe dealing with the departure of ourExecutive Director Betty Schohl afterthree years of dedicated service to theKTC. I’ve heard through the grapevinethat there are many of you who might beinterested in the job. So let me review thepossible transition to a new ExecutiveDirector. Betty is leaving as ExecutiveDirector effective December 31. In thebest of all possible worlds, we will selecta replacement who would begin January1. In order to do this, the board is goingto try to adhere to the following time line.

November 9,10 - The board has itsretreat to establish an effective structureand mission for the club

¨ November 15 - A job description forthe Executive Director will be posted onthe website and resumes will be re-quested

¨ December 1 - Cut off date for resumes

¨ December 15 - Interviews of qualifiedparties will begin

¨ December 22 - Board Meeting. Rec-ommendation made to board; new Ex-ecutive Director approved

Sounds so simple, right? This is anambitious time line with the year endingholidays right in the middle. Just in casethe selection process takes longer, we’vetaken some actions to ensure continuityof KTC operations through the end ofJanuary 09 and beyond. The Long Dis-

tance Committee(LDC) has developed atransition plan to ensure that all KTC andnon-KTC races will take place withoutany hitches. Individuals have been as-signed responsibilities for equipment stor-age, finish line management, race direc-tion, and registration coordination. Wewill also identify an individual who willensure continuity of the ExecutiveDirector’s administrative tasks. Throughthis entire process, Betty has been andwill continue to be an invaluable resourceto make the transition efficient and seam-less. The LDC will continue to meet andmanage the road racing side of thingsuntil a new Executive Director has beenselected.

My next column will also deal withchanges—those that come out of ourNovember retreat. Stay tuned!

This will be my last message to youas the KTC Executive Director asI will be leaving this position on

December 31, 2008. First ofall, thank you for your supportover the past three years, es-pecially those of you who al-ways step forward when asked(and even when notasked). The best partof my job has been theopportunity to work fre-quently with all whohave become my friendsover our years together in this club.

I have been involved with the KTC inone way or another for the past 20 years

and it has been clear to me that mostpeople are members of this club because

they like to run and they view theKTC primarily as a RUN-NING CLUB. Our sharedinterest in running (all levelsof ability included) is our com-mon bond. The KTC proudly

offers a year-roundslate of runs/walks ofvarying distances andvenues in Knoxvilleand the surroundingarea – even as far away

as the Big South Fork Recreational Area. The Trails Committee has developed awonderful selection of 7 venues for trailruns from March – August. Social activi-

ties, planned by the Social Com-mittee, are plentiful and well-at-tended throughout the year.

The KTC Youth Athletics Pro-gram, under the guidance of YAPDirector Marty Sonnenfeldt andCompetitive Teams DirectorShane Begnaud, continues to be

one of the most outstanding programs ofits kind in the USA. Young people 5-18years of age have year-round opportuni-ties to develop and showcase their run-ning abilities through the YAP program.

The Tennessee Track & Field OfficialsAssociation, sponsored by the KTC (cer-tified by the USAT&F and coordinatedby Steve Luper) are the finest in thenation. They travel far and wide provid-ing their officiating expertise at track andfield events from elementary through se-nior age levels, including national cham-pionships and even the Olympics.

The KTC’s most recent major devel-opment is the purchase of an IPICO chiptiming system. KTC member Ken Childshas been instrumental in leading the Tim-

Hall of Fame BanquetAnnounced

INSIDE STUFFINSIDE STUFFINSIDE STUFFINSIDE STUFFINSIDE STUFFMichael deLisle, FOOTNOTES Editor

Less than three years shy of its 50thAnniversary, the Knoxville TrackClub decided this year to honor

some of the many luminaries whofounded the club, along with a few otherswho were responsible for the extraordi-nary success and growth of the KTCover the years. A committee was formedto develop a list of worthy nominees, nomean feat considering the extensive list ofhighly qualified individuals who for somany years have given so freely of theirtime and energy to contribute to thegrand accomplishments of our augustorganization.

From that list of nominees, elevenoutstanding individuals have been cho-sen as the inaugural class of inducteesinto the Knoxville Track Club Hall of

Fame. These winners will be honored ata spectacular banquet on February 19,2009, according to HOF committee chairBob Barber.

The committee is working hard toselect an appropriate venue, as it is antici-pate upwards of a hundred and fiftyattendees will be at the banquet. All KTCmembers will be invited to attend; it willbe a gala affair, fancy attire, wonderfulfood and drinks, entirely fitting for sucha grand occasion honoring those whomthe committee has selected.

Plans are for inductees who live out-side Knoxville to be flown in for the affair. All inductees will be invited to addressthe assemblage, and an outstanding guestspeaker will be on the bill, as well.

Many thanks go out to the KTC LongDistance Committee, particularly DaveAlderman, who birthed the idea, and tothe nominating committee, which spentlong hours delberating these difficultchoices. After all, over a nearly fifty yearperiod, a myriad of worthy choices pre-sented themselves. It was quite a difficultdecison paring that list down to the finalgroup of inductees, and our gratitude tocommittee members Dave Alderman,Mike Marchant, Marj McLean, BobMcLean, Hayes Hunter, Joyce Hunter, and Paul Barrette.

The final list of selections for theinaugural class of the Knoxville TrackClub Hall of Fame will be announcedsoon. A long term hope is that the Hall ofFame will be housed in the future Univer-sity of Tennessee indoor track facility.

In future years, additional groups ofworthy individuals will be added to theHall of Fame. While this year’s groupconcentrates on the founders of the club, future Hall of Fame classes will includeoutstanding runners, volunteers, andKnoxville Track Club leaders.

Mark February 19 on your calendarnow to join us in honoring the fine group;this affair will surely not be one to miss

MoNRs and WeNRs still meet for arun and carbo loading afterwards everyMonday (Farragut) and Wednesday(Bearden) at Runners Market. Pacescan be a brutal 20 minute mile or aleisurely 5 minute mile run. Pick andchoose; it doesn’t matter because youend where you start.

Holiday season is upon us with sev-eral fun events. Autumnfest on Thanks-giving is the perfect excuse to eat thatsecond helping of pumpkin pie. Buddy’s,the Reindeer Run, and the Jingle Bellsrace sound like a choir of events headingour way.

Run and have fun; have fun allthe time!

SUNDAYS: Group activities start at the Concord Telephone Exchange parking lot in Farragut at 7 a.m. This is a combinedGroup Run that encompasses the KTC Long Distance Training Program as well as other runners that opt for a short comfortablerun of varying lengths. MONDAYS: A group run takes place at the Runners Market location in Farragut, 623 N. Campbell Station Road. Similarin character to the long-standing Wednesday runs at the original location, this is a social run, starting at 5:30 p.m., and willgenerally utilize the Grisgsby Chapel, Campbell Station and Parkside Greenways. 2009 Trail ScheduleReady For Action

by Michael deLisle

¨ Follow the rules of the road - travelon the right and pass on the left.

¨ Don’t run down the middle of thetrail. Run to the right side to allowothers to pass safely.

¨ Don’t wear headphones – but ifyou insist on going against this RRCAsafety guideline, keep the volume lowor only wear one headphone.

¨ If you are running an out-and-back route on a trail, don’t just makea sudden u-turn at your turn aroundpoint. Stop, step to the right to allowoncoming traffic the opportunity topass. If you are wearing headphones, now is a good time to pop out anearphone to make sure no one isapproaching. Ensure the trail is clearof oncoming traffic (runners, cyclists,in-line skaters, etc.) then make youru-turn. Making a sudden u-turnwithout looking over your shoulder isa good way to get hit by an oncomingcyclist or skater.

¨ Avoid running on trails in theevening if they are not well lit and donot have regular traffic.

¨ Never run more than two abreastif you are running in a group. Don’tbe a trail hog. While pedestrianshave the right of way on most trails, the goal is to share the trails.

¨ Alert people when you are passingthem – don’t assume they are awareof their surroundings. A simple “onyour left” warning will suffice.

¨ Be alert on blind curves.

¨ Stop at stop signs if the trailcrosses a roadway. Don’t assume carson the road will stop for the trailcrossing.

¨ Be mindful of young children onthe trail – their movements can beunpredictable. Slowing the pace a bitwhen you pass small children on thetrail is a wise idea. Use this as anopportunity to slow the pace thenpick up the tempo.

13 tips from the RRCA

As much fun as we had with the2008 Treadin’ Trodden TrailsOffroad Running Series, we’re

anticipating even more in 2009!

At our recent season kickoffmeeting, the KTC Trails Com-mittee crafted a schedule of eventsthat should thrill local and re-gional trail runners. Coordinat-ing our slate with not only KTCand non-KTC road races, wecontacted trail running afficionados inAsheville and Chattanooga, as well asRace Day Events, who stages theXTERRA three-race series. We believethe resulting schedule offers a fun andchallenging series of events that allowtrail runners to increase their fitness asthe season wears on as they build towardlonger and longer distance trail races.

Several of our races will be carryoversfrom past years, but we’re excited to offerthree new events. Here is a descriptionof the upcoming year’s race schedule:

On March 22 we will celebrate thearrival of Spring with our annual runningof the Belly of the Beast. This five-milerace, mostly cross-country with a bit ofsingle track thrown in for good measure, will be held again at Melton Hill Park, home of the feared Beast and Baby Beast.Nicole Howe will be in charge.

We’ll return to Seven Islands NatureReserve on April 19, to test ourselves onthe grassy pathways and singletracksthere. Race distance will be between sixand seven miles, depending on the whimsof race director Bobby Holcombe.

Forks of the River and Ijams Nature

Center will host the third race of 2009 onan interesting combination of mulchedtrails, fencerow running, and singletrack.

Beth MacDonald will once againdirect the race.

On June 14, the action willresume at The Trail That Can’tBe Concord off NorthshoreDrive. The circuitous seven-mile amalgam of singletrack trailswill test even the toughest of trail

runners, according to six-time race direc-tor Michael deLisle.

One of our favorites, the I.C. King ofTrails Race, directed by Jack Kilislian, presents runners a wonderful 7-9 milecourse within the wooded confines offAlcoa Highway.

This year Kevin Pack has graciouslyagreed to include his venerable HawRidge Trail Race in our series, held thiscoming year on Friday, August 7. We’relooking forward to this grand party!

Another addition to TTT for 2009 isthe Big South Fork Trail Race, trailbossedfor the sixteenth time by Bobby Glenn. This race will likely be part of both ourseries and the KTC Grand Prix.

Even more exciting is our plannedultramarathon in Fall 2009. Acclaimednational caliber ultrarunner Susan Donnellyis putting together a whale of a course.More information should be available bythe next issue of Footnotes.

Stay tuned for more updates on the2009 Treadin’ Trodden Trails Series. Asgood as it’s been thus far, we’re sure thebest is yet to come.

Plantar Fasciitis:Evidence-based Approach to Resolution

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

FOR ULTIMATE

PERFORMANCEby Mick Larrabee, P.T.

m,x m,x m,x m,x m,x continued on page 13 ,cx,cx,cx,cx,cx

If you’ve ever talked with runnersabout injuries, it’s a pretty sure thingthat you’ve heard the dreaded words

plantar fasciits…or something that soundssimilar. As a therapist, I find it absolutelyfascinating to listen to the many differentways in which this condition can bereferred. Just in case you are wonderingits correct pronunciation is PLAN-turfashee-EYE-tis.

Plantar fasciitis is in fact the mostcommon foot condition treated byhealthcare providers. In a recent surveyof the Orthopaedic Section of the Ameri-can Physical Therapy Association(APTA) 100% of therapists that re-sponded indicated that plantar fasciitiswas the most common foot conditionseen in their clinic. It has been shown toaccount for up to 22% of all runningrelated injuries and 15% of all adult footcomplaints requiring professional care(Rome et al, 2001).

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

It’s an overuse injury affecting the soleor flexor surface (plantar) of the foot. Adiagnosis of plantar fasciitis means youhave inflamed the tough, fibrous band oftissue (fascia) connecting your heel bone(calcaneus) to the base of your toes(metatarsal heads). The fascia consistsof 3 bands of tissue; of which the centralband functionally shortens when youextend the toes creating a “windlass ef-fect”. This may assist in supinating thefoot during the latter part of the stance

phase of gait as you prepare to push-off…but excessive pronation (especiallylate in the stance phase) can put overloadon the tissue leading to eventual break-down.

Symptoms

When your first few steps out of bedin the morning cause severe pain in theheel of your foot, you probably haveplantar fasciitis! The condition startsgradually with mild pain at the heel boneoften referred to as a stone bruise. Symp-toms may progress to a stabbing orburning pain that’s usuallyworse in the morning be-cause the fascia tightens(contracts) overnight.Once your foot limbers up,the pain of plantar fasciitisnormally decreases, but itmay return after long peri-ods of standing or after get-ting up from a seated position. You’re more likely to feel it after(not during) exercise. By the end of theday the pain may be replaced by a dullaching that improves with rest.

Causes

Under normal circumstances, yourplantar fascia acts like a shock-absorbingbowstring, supporting the arch in yourfoot. But, if tension on that bowstringbecomes too great, it can create smalltears in the fascia. Repetitive stretchingand tearing can cause the fascia to be-

come irritated or inflamed. The causes ofplantar fasciitis can be:

Physical activity overload. Plantarfasciitis is common in runners. Evenwalking or stair climbing can place toomuch stress on your heel and the softtissue attached to it if part of an aggres-sive new training regimen.

Arthritis. Some types of arthritis cancause inflammation in the tendons in thebottom of your foot, which may lead toplantar fasciitis.

Diabetes. Although doctors don’tknow why, plantar fasciitis occurs moreoften in people with diabetes.

Faulty foot mechanics. Being flat-footed, having a high arch or even havingan abnormal pattern of walking can ad-versely affect the way weight is distrib-uted when you’re on your feet, puttingadded stress on the plantar fascia.

Improper shoes. Shoes that are thin-soled, loose, lack arch support &/or theability to absorb shock don’t protect yourfeet. Ladies listen up: if you regularlywear shoes with high heels, your Achil-les tendon — which is attached to yourheel — can contract and shorten, causingstrain on the tissue around your heel.

The critical step here is tomatch the foot type withthe proper shoe type thathas the characteristics nec-essary to supply adequatesupport &/or cushioningto your foot.

Risk Factors

You’re more likely toget the condition if you’re a woman, if

you’re overweight, or if you have a jobthat requires a lot of walking or standingon hard surfaces. As a runner, you’realso at risk if you have tight calf musclesthat limit how far you can dorsiflex yourankles (toes toward the shin).

If you don’t treat plantar fasciitis, itmay become a chronic condition. Youmay not be able to keep up your level ofactivity and you may also develop symp-toms of foot, knee, hip and back prob-

Treatment Interventions

Conservative treatment is almost al-ways successful, given enough time.Duration of treatment can be anywherefrom several months to 2 years beforesymptoms resolve, although about 90%of patients will be better in 9 months.Initial treatment usually consists of heelstretching exercises, shoe inserts, nightsplints, and anti-inflammatory medica-tions. If these fail, often timesa cast boot (which lookslike a ski boot) may beused. It is worn full time, but can be removed forbathing. Some physicianswill also offer steroid in-jections, which providelasting relief in about 50%of people. However, thisinjection is very painful and not for every-one. In a few patients, non-surgical treat-ment fails and surgery to release the tight, inflamed fascia becomes necessary.

What does the evidence say?

Leaves fall softly on the sidewalksounding like the tap, tap, tap ofbird’s feet. My own feet are much

louder, clomp, clomp, clomp. The windstarts to blow and the leaves scatter likechildren being called home. The air iscrisp and clean. My head is clear. I havenew shoes on my feet in preparation forthe marathon in the spring. These newshoes make a different sound than theprevious pair. They are virgin yet to themany miles ahead. A squirrel sits by theside, nut in hand, watching me. Am I athreat? He decides I am and scampersfast and high up the tree. I am starting myown ascent, one of many as I train for thishilly marathon that Knoxville is so proud of.

This will be my 6th go round at themarathon. The proud distance, where

finishing seems to be the ultimate goaland time is secondary.

My German Shepherd dog runs withme today, ears up listening, nose flaredand filling with information. His tail ishigh and ears are tucked for better aero-dynamics. He doesn’t care about thingslike finish times or races. He just likes torun for the joy of it. He transforms intothe puppy he once was, filled with joyand exuberance. I find this emotion con-tagious. Both of us have seen youngerdays, but here we are still pounding outthe miles. Still enjoying good health andstill able to enjoy this crisp day using ourbodies to the max. The sky so blue, likerobbin’s eggs, the clouds white and fluffy,an optimistic sky. The sun whispers thruthe nearly naked tree casting crooked

shadows across my path. I run the sameroute the marathon will pass thru. I notethis is where mile 10 is. Mile ten is animportant pacing point in a marathon. Itjudges well as to how you will finishoverall. Are you on pace? Are you toofast? Is it time to pick up the pace?Marathon running is a delicate ballet. Goout too fast and you are ruined at mile 7.Go out too slow and you will not meetyou goal either. One must start slow, butnot too slow. What? I know. You have tohave run one to really understand.

Each breath I take is cold in my lungs, exhaling cold steam luck a ’67 Impala ona cold morning. I am cold but can runlong and strong. I know I am slow, butI get there. I keep chugging along. I planto add miles today. My German Shep-herd seems to be noticing to extra miles.I know I am. Pain is weakness leavingthe body, right? As I remember theOlympics, we saw Americans winningand holding their own in second or thirdplace. As a country, don’t we have somuch to be proud of.

Some runs go well, and some go notas well. We all have our days of struggle. What will the marathon day be like? Whoknows. In the meantime, train with ev-erything you have. Come race day, youwill have your support system in place. All the volunteers at the race make run-ning and racing happen. If it weren’t forthem, we would have to stash all oursupplies all along the route just in case weneed them. Aren’t we grateful for theraces and events that are made so muchmore enjoyable with the volunteers?

The KTC motto is to “Run three andwork one”. If it is time for you to do a littlevolunteering, please feel free to contactme at [email protected] I amhappy to get you set up with some funvolunteer assignments.

We all enjoy the fitness we achievethru running. Fitness that is physical, mental and spiritual. We also enjoy prov-ing to ourselves what all our hard workhas brought us with the races we enjoyrunning in. Just as a little opportunity togive back, please volunteer as often asyou can. Life tends to give back what youput in. One gets happiness from giving. So work to make yourself happy with alittle volunteering.

5 “Real” Foods forTraining

by Lee MurphyMS-MPH, RD, LDN

NutritionistKnox County Health Dept.

Are you sick of that same oldsugary sports drink, that gooeysports gel, or that bland sports

bar? You’re not alone. Although theyserve an important purpose, after somany training hours, it is not uncommonfor an athlete to get extremely bored withmanufactured sports food. In the past, athletes didn’t have such a vast array ofrelated products to choose from, so theyresorted to using real food to help refuelduring longer training bouts. Althoughwe have a plentiful supply of choicesthese days, you can still do the same. Ifyou want to get out of your eating rut, tryincorporating some of the following 5“real” foods in the future:

Bananas

There is a good reason why race-aidstations are often loaded with ba-nanas. Some health professionalsbelieve the banana is the perfectsports food—loaded withfast-release carbohydrates, vitamin B6 (which also helpsfight infection) and potassium(which aids muscle hydrationand recovery from fatigue).Furthermore, as an easily di-gestible source of fiber, the ba-nana is valuable in preventing theonset of GI distress during training—asymptom that many athletes experiencewith other fibrous fruits such as applesand pears.

For a tasty alternative to a wholebanana, with a nutrient composition simi-lar to some energy bars, spread a mixtureof one mashed banana, one tablespoonalmond or peanut butter, and one table-spoon honey on a large whole-wheattortilla. Roll the tortilla and place in baggyfor easy access during, or after training.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes provide a nutritionalprofile that is perfect for the enduranceathlete. With lots of energy-enhancingcarbohydrates, sweet potatoes also pro-vide more than 250% of our daily needsfor vitamin A (beta carotene) and are agood source of vitaminC, potassium, and iron.Manganese and copperare additionally present, which are crucial forhealthy muscle function. To make convenientsweet potato wedges:1) Place two scrubbedand sliced sweet pota-toes into a baggy with one teaspoon oiland 1/8-teaspoon salt. Shake. 2) Placepotatoes on pan coated with cookingspray. 3) Bake at 475ºF for 30 minutes,or until slightly tender (turning potatoesevery 10 minutes). 4) Let cool. 5) Placein a baggy for a nourishing treat whiletraining.

Oranges

Another favorite at race-aid sta-tions, oranges supply over 100% of

the daily value for the antioxidantvitamin C, which may helpalleviate post-workoutmuscle soreness. Orangesections can be messy, but

offer a thirst-quenching snackbefore, during, or after training.

Oatmeal

As a favorite breakfast food, the best

oatmeal consists of unprocessedoats…and nothing else! If made withskim or low fat milk, it can provide theoptimum mix of protein, fiber and slow-release carbohydrates. Whether you’reeating it pre-race, post-training run, or asa regular daily starter, you can’t beat theoriginal breakfast food to get you goingeach morning. Watch out for oatmeal look-alikes, though, such as instant varieties oroat-type cereals. Although these are far

healthier options than many sugar-laden cereals, they are a less suitablechoice than pure, simple oatmeal.

Chocolate Milk

When it comes to helping athletesrecover from strenuous exercise, chocolate milk can be just as good ashigh-tech sports drinks. By refueling

exhausted muscles, it allows an enhancedperformance for your next workout. Inrecent research, chocolate milk was foundto be twice as efficient for recovery afterworkouts (while tasting better too!).Chocolate milk is an effective fuel torecharge muscles after exercise becauseof an ideal ratio of carbohydrates toprotein. There is a new trend of sportsdrinks that add protein to the mix, butthese creations still may not work as wellas chocolate milk. Participants in anotherstudy who were given the drinks thatinclude protein were not able to work outas long as the chocolate milkdrinkers…All good news to chocolate-milk lovers!

The list of beneficial and healthy “real”foods to add to your pre/post training listgoes on, but these mentioned are just aglimpse of how you can experiment, andstave off boredom at the same time!Happy training!

GOOD AND BGOOD AND BGOOD AND BGOOD AND BGOOD AND BAD NEWAD NEWAD NEWAD NEWAD NEWSSSSS

by Bob Godwin

Good News:

Emily Parker, a sophomore at HallsHigh School won the NationalChampionship in the Super D Jun-

ior 18 year old and under Downhill Com-petition at The USA Cycling MountainBike National Championships held July16-20 at the Mount Snow Resort inWestover, Vermont. She also placedthird in the cross-country race. These areamong the most challenging competi-tions around and require great skill aswell as strength and endurance.

Our local papers continue to carrynotices of local bike events and subjectsof interest to bicyclists regularly. It is agreat time to be a bicycle rider.

Bad News

Tuesday, August 26, Barbara War-ren died at age 65 after breakingher neck in a bike crash at the

Santa Barbara Triathlon. She was para-lyzed from the neck down and required aventilator to breathe. She communicatedwith her twin sister, also a prominentendurance athlete, by blinking that she didnot want to live in that condition. She diedshortly after the device was disconnected.

The San Antonio Express-News car-ried a feature on August 10 headlined,“Bike Safety Concerns Amplified byDeaths.” On average, two bicyclists dieeach year in San Antonio and get littlemedia attention compared with the morethan 100 people who die in auto-mobile accidents. A bicyclesafety course teacher lists thefive most common types ofcollisions:

¨ Bicyclist comes outfrom driveway

¨ Riding the wrong way

¨ Motorist passing a bicyclist

¨ Bicyclist swerves due to road debris, potholes, etc.

¨ Failure to obey stop signs

There is a campaign to add more bikelanes. An Oregon study shows that bikelanes bring out more riders and as thenumber increases, the number of crashesand conflicts with cars goes down.

The Express-News feature was occa-sioned by the death of two bicyclists

within days of each other. The60-year-old rider was hit frombehind by a pick-up truck, dragged for half a block, beforethe truck stopped, backed up,and fled the scene. The cyclist

was wearing a helmet, had a flashingred light on the back of his bike and wason the far right side of the road—doingeverything he was supposed to do.

The other death was a 16-year-oldboy not wearing a helmet and withoutlights, who apparently darted out into theroad, perhaps to avoid other kids whochased him into traffic.

The San Antonio Safety Instructorsays, “We don’t pretend bicycling is not

dangerous. But people who don’t havebicycling knowledge and tech-

nique or the proper equip-ment, are much more atrisk.”

I have recited my per-sonal experience with bi-cycle wrecks and acci-dents ad nauseam, butsafety cannot be over-em-phasized. The loss of a

bicycling friend in Louisi-ana two years ago was dev-

astating, particularly as shewas an experienced, careful rider on a

familiar route, riding with friends, andapparently just made a mistake. In otherwords, all of us who share the roads withvehicles must maintain constant care andattention for our own safety.

Fall is a wonderful time to ride yourbike. Keep it that way by being vigilant, careful and courteous as you shareautumn’s beauties with others on theroads.

GREENWAY DEVELOPMENTAND CONSTRUCTION

SLOWS TO CRAWLby Will Skelton

The development and constructionof new greenways is currently andhas been for some time at a signifi-

cant lull, hence much less to report re-garding new greenways. One very shortgreenway portion has just been finished(Ten Mile Creek; see below) and theKnoxBlount Greenway is still in the pre-construction phase (also see below). Butno other significant Knoxville, KnoxCounty, or Farragut greenways are un-der construction and few if any othergreenways appear to be close to theconstruction phase. This is in spite of thefact that several recent studies and re-ports have continued to report greenwaysare one of the very top priorities ofKnoxville and Knox County citizens (forexample, the near-completion Knoxvilleand Knox County Comprehensive Park,Greenway and Recreation Plan pre-pared by the Metropolitan PlanningCommission). So this is probably agood time for greenways advocates tourge their elected representatives not toforget greenways.

KnoxBlount Greenway

As for what is going on, the KnoxBlountGreenway from the Buck Karnes Bridgeon Alcoa Highway to the Navy/MarineCorps Reserve Center continues to beplagued by delays; tasks still to be accom-plished are TDOT, Marine Corps andNavy approval and archaeological issues. It does appear that the rip-rap along theLake Loudon shoreline will be done thiswinter at low lake pool, which will facili-tate subsequent greenway construction. It is now contemplated that constructionshould start next spring.

Ten Mile Creek Greenway

The Ten Mile Creek Greenway Bridgebelow the Wynnsong Theater parkinglot off Peters Road has finally been put inplace. This greenway extends westwardfrom the West Hills subdivision (knownas the Jean Teague Greenway at thatpoint), starting at the West Hills Elemen-tary School, then through John Bynum/West Hills Park, below the YMCA andbeside the Saint Andrews subdivision, onsidewalks and highway shoulders“around” the West End Church of Christand Walker’s Crossing Apartments onNorth Gallaher View Road, then (fromhere on it’s known as the Ten MileCreek Greenway) behind and belowSam’s, Wal-Mart, Court South, andthe Woodlands West Apartments, thenalong Ten Mile Creek south of theCrestwood Hills community, and fi-nally to and under I-40/75 to theWynnsong 16 Theater parking lot. The one-way distance is about 3.2miles from West Hills ElementarySchool to the theater parking lot (goingaround the Church of Christ to thefront).

The City of Knoxville was responsiblefor extending the existing greenway un-der I-40 to the Wynnsong parking lot. This distance is very short, less than ¼mile, but very expensive. It is now fin-ished and looks great. The bridge isimpressive, about 125 feet of steel span-ning the creek and wetland. There willprobably be a ribbon cutting in the nextseveral months. So, going from theWynnsong parking lot, you can nowwalk, jog, or bike all the way to the West

Hills Elementary School, with the onlygap in the greenway being the area acrossthe Church of Christ and Walker’s Cross-ing Apartments apartment properties inthe middle, where you have to use side-walks/highway shoulders. Hopefullysomeday this gap can be completed, butChurch of Christ approval will be neces-sary. Since the City already has aneasement to continue the greenway alongthe creek behind the Walker’s CrossingApartments just to the west of the church, all that’s needed to complete the greenwayis an easement from the church.

Cherokee Boulevard/Sequoyah

Greenway/Sequoyah ParkRestrooms

This construction project, alreadyfunded and approved, has been delayedbecause TVA (which owns the land andleases it to the city) has required the Cityto do an archaeological survey, so it maybe spring before they’re built.

Trail Markers

Regarding trail mileage markers, BobBarber and crew have made significantprogress in getting quarter mile markerson the vast majority of the City ofKnoxville’s greenways. I’ve helped Boba bit and can testify to the vast amount ofwork Bob has to put into each of thesegreenway mileage marking projects. Soif you benefit from the mileage markerson your runs, give Bob a word of thanksnext time you see him. Here’s Bob’s listof what has been done and what remainsas of late October:

Trade the Tires for Running Shoes

If you’re like any other Tennesseemotorist, you’ve probably been frus-trated at some point by the rising gas

prices or shortages we’ve experienced inthe past few months. Some alternativemethods for transportation like riding abicycle, taking the bus or walking mayhave come to mind as you watched yourgas meter drop. Maybe you measuredthe distance between your neighborhoodgrocery store and your front door andrealized it was very close to the distanceyou usually run or walk during yourexercise routine.

Why not ditch the motorized trans-portation every so often and exercise

while you transport yourself on yourvery own legs and feet? BlueCrossBlueShield of Tennessee’s WalkingWorks® program provides a freewalking log on its Web site for thosewho are ready to start tracking theirprogress.

Walking to a place you usually drivecan be a fun way to change your normalroutine; and it’s healthy too, for you andthe environment! Depending on whereyou live, you could walk to a local shop-ping center, to a restaurant, to the bank oreven to work if you’re lucky. With a

2009 COVENANT KIDS RUNMOVES TO SATURDAY

Jason Altman, Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Director

COVENANT HEALTHKNOXVILLE MARATHON 2009

COVENANT HEALTHKNOXVILLE MARATHON 2009

It’s hard to believe, but we are lessthan 5 months away from the 2009Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.

Here’s a brief look at what you can expectfor next spring’s event.

The Covenant Kids’ Run has moved toSaturday! We are extremely excitedabout this move for the youngsters. Wemade the change for several reasons. The first is due to participant feedback. We took a survey of past registrants, and an overwhelming amount of folksindicated that they would prefer it beheld on Saturday. Many parents will beable to accompany their child on Satur-day during the kids’ run as well asparticipate in either the marathon, half-marathon, relay, or 5K onSunday morning.

Start time for the eventwill be 5:30 pm. This isgreat for the kids and par-ents because they can makejust one trip on Saturday. They can first come by the expo, pickup their bib, shirt, and goody bag. Thenthey can explore the expo until the start ofthe kids’ run, which will begin just out-side the expo doors.

With this move, we are hoping for anincrease in the number of children who

participate in 2009. Something new thatwe hope will achieve this is our Adopt-a-Child program. When people registeronline for the event, they have the optionto sponsor a child for the Covenant Kids’Run. We will then offer these sponsor-ships to children whose families cannotafford the registrationcost. If you wouldlike to learn more aboutthe Adopt-a-Child pro-gram or would like in-formation about ob-taining one of thesesponsorships, pleasecontact the marathonoffice.

Since the Covenant Kids’Run will be on Saturday, theSunday race schedule willbe slightly altered. Themarathon, half-marathon,and 4-person marathon re-lay will still start at 7 am on

March 29th. The 5K, how-ever, will now start at 7:15 am.

This will be beneficial for our slower 5kparticipants. It will give them more timeto finish the 5K before half-marathonersfinish their respective race.

Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic is back asthe sponsor for the marathon, half-mara-

thon, and 5K training programs. The fullmarathon training program is just aroundthe corner. We’ll kick it off on Saturday,November 22nd, at 7:30 am. The kickofflocation that day will be at the RunnersMarket in Bearden. Last year, we aver-aged more than 100 folks at each training

run, so rest assuredyou will have some-one with which totrain! The half-mara-thon training will starton January 3rd, andthe 5K program willkickoff on the 7th ofFebruary.

Registration is now open. If you wantto save a few dollars, be sure and sign upbefore December 1st. Early-bird registra-tion ends on November 30th, so registeronline or by mailing in a printed registra-tion form before the cut-off date.

Finally, we are still looking for somededicated volunteers to step up and serveon the Marathon Organizing Committee. These are the folks that will help with theplanning and execution in the monthsleading up to the event. For a list ofavailable positions and job duties, orsimply for more information, contactJason Altman at 865-684-4294 [email protected].

Official Times

Kenny Rudd, USATF MastersLevel Throws Official

I handed the 1k discus tothe young lady and said“DO NOT THROW THIS UNTIL

I TURN AROUND”. I walked about40’ with my back to the discus ringand “wham” the discus hit me inthe back of the head andknocked me to my knees.Fortunately, I was wearing asun visor type hat and thediscus hit on the strap inthe back. After a trip to thehospital ER and a CT scan Iwas ok. The MD said it was g o o dthat I had a hard head. But, I learned themost important lesson an individualaround track & field throwing events canlearn:

Never, ever turn your back on athrowing event ring or runway under anycircumstance.

Now that I am a master level USATFthrows official safety is always at thefront of everything I am responsible forduring a throwing event. I will chew anathlete out big time for being carelessduring a throws event. All of our throwsofficials are responsible for safety andeach official is instructed to correct, im-mediately, any act that is not safe. Weofficials are constantly reminding eachother about safety for ourselves as well.We actually have the authority to dis-qualify an athlete for disobeying an offi-cial during a competition. Sometimes Iremind an athlete of that to get theirattention.

Officials do several things to help withsafety. We retrieve all implements during

Kenny Rudd and Bruce Borden have been officiating college, high school and youth throwing events forover 2 decades. They individually contributed their thoughts about the throws and not surprisinglyprovided insight on the most important aspect of being an official – safety.

warm-ups and during the competition. No athletes are allowed in the sectorlanding area. We establish boundaries byusing flagging and use items like chairsand garbage cans to establish points thatathletes cannot go beyond.

I am very fortunate to be apart of the University Of Ten-nessee officials’ crew. We re-

ceive excellent training and have someamazing mentors to observe and learn

from as well. I learn some-thing every time I officiate ameet . But, the day I learnedfirsthand how it feels to be

struck by a thrown implementwill always cause me to be very safetyconscious.

The reason I officiate high school, college and youth athletes is to help themhave a good experience. Our position asthrows officials is a volunteerone, and if one of our athletesshould be injured it would bedevastating. So as long as Iofficiate javelin, discus, shotput and hammer throws, people will just have to un-derstand that safety will befirst and upfront with thisthrows official.

Notes from theKTC Officials Association

Bruce Borden, USATF NationalLevel Throws Official

Regardless of the level of the par-ticipation, knowledge of the rulesis very important. Being flexible to

the level of competition is foremost. Anofficial should not treat knowledgeable, college and post-collegiate athletes as ifthey were middle school kids and go

through the entire rules spiel prior tostarting the venue. They are there andready to compete…..……..all shouldknow the rules and do not want to listento an official go through the whole spiel(which interrupts the athletes flow)………”Does anyone not know therules”?.....”Then let’s get going and giveit your best”.

MOST IMPORTANT, in my opin-ion, is not to read into the rules but ratherinto the INTENT of the rules. Look foranything that might be considered anadvantage….nothing more. Also, al-ways learn from those more experiencedthan you. Sometimes I feel like I’ll neversee anything new then something popsup that I causes me seek the counsel ofsomeone who has far more experiencethan I to get a ruling. I found a recentcartoon of two officials standing over thebody of a third official who had a javelinsticking out of his back. One questionedthe other about whether they shouldmeasure from the point of contact orfrom where he staggered and fell. Ofcourse, we never want to see this happenbut what is the ruling???? An experiencedofficial made this simple when I sharedthis with him, and the responsewas…….”Re-throw because the imple-ment did not touch the ground”. Ugh!

Dealing with kids is truly the greatestthing about officiating. You always comeacross athletes that are very well man-nered and appreciative of officials. After

working a venue and one of theathletes comes up to you andsays……”Thanks for yourhelp”…..it really is gratify-ing. This is more the excep-tion then the rule but when ithappens it says you have done

your job. This is very com-mon among the Junior Olympic

athletes. But, as mentioned above, youhad best know the rules because therewill be parents and coaches that willchallenge your calls and make thingsdifficult. Handling these issues in a verycalm and descriptive manner (with ruleknowledge) always seems to sooth thesituation. Most all kids, parents & coachesappreciate this demeanor. When you getto the collegiate and post-collegiate level, you really get a chance to see some great

There have beenissues with the getting accurate and cor-rect numbers from the current accoun-tant. Marty Sonnenfeldt noted that theKTC is currently using individual reportsfor all 3 aspects of the club and manyitems are being misallocated. The cur-rent accounting is done through checkstubs and not the actual expense reports.

It was noted that the KTC needs anaccountant that will advise the organiza-tion on one accounting method for all 3groups (marathon, road racing, YAP). Itwas suggested that the KTC use anindependent accountant that is not affili-ated with the KTC. It was noted thatthere is no contract with the currentaccountant. The KTC is billed two timesper year

Other discussion on the matter washad a committee was named by PresidentRon McElhaney to research names andto bring that list to the September meet-ing. The committee is comprised ofChris Harper and Bob Barber.

New KTC Team Competition Coordinator

EDDIE’S DREAMEDDIE’S DREAMEDDIE’S DREAMEDDIE’S DREAMEDDIE’S DREAM

Eddie Reymond had a vision. Actu-ally, he owns several visions, butI am only going to focus on one of

them, the team competition. In the “olden”days there were only 2 or 3 races a yearthat included any type of teamcompetition…Dogwood, Fireball, and ofcourse, Expo. In 2003, Eddie dreamed ofa team competition series of 6 or 7 racesfrom the KTC race calendar. Ah, it wasthe birth of the KTC Team Competition.

In 2003, Runner’s Market was theonly consistent competitor in the field. There was only one division (Compa-rable to today’s version of the Opendivision) with Runner’s Market some-times being the only team! Eddie thoughtto himself that perhaps Health Shoppecould have a team. And soon after, JohnSmyth developed a team for EBS. Peoplewere starting to ask questions about whothese special runners were in the brightred of Health Shoppe and Runner’s Mar-ket and the blinding yellow of EBS. (Noone asks that anymore.) Runners beganthinking that there must be something tothe camaraderie that these teams seem toshare. Other teams, such as the police

and fire departments, started competingfrom time to time. I am happy to an-nounce that the Open field continues togrow today with new teams, includingFarragut Presbyterian church. It is agreat way to encourage fellowship amongits members.

After a few years, the Women’s divi-sion was introduced. Runner’s Market,EBS, and Health Shoppe added a women’steam. The division grew to be one of thebiggest and fastest growing divisionsthat the KTC has now. Every team hasbrought something special to this divi-sion. Quick Chicks are very competitive(They don’t like to admit that they are,but they can kick my you know what!),yet remain a strong volunteer core for theclub. I must admit that before I became amember of a team, I dreamed of being aQuick Chick. (I did get one shot at it, andladies, it made my day! I have the picturesto prove it!)

In 2007, the Corporate Division wascreated, recognizing an interest in wellnessin the corporate world. Businesses wereencouraged to form teams consisting of

their employees and could include theirfamily members. Big and small compa-nies answered the call. Denso, Clayton,Jewelry TV, and All Kreatures are just afew of the names we all recognize. Newteams are coming on board all the time. You will soon see Pet Safe at the races.Looks like everyone will be bringing outthe “big dogs” in this division.

There are only a couple of more racesleft this season, as of press time, and theraces between teams look close. EBS andRunner’s Market are fighting for the titlein the Open division, whereas on theWomen’s side it looks like Runner’sMarket has a win pretty well sewn up,but you never know what might hap-pen! Clayton and All Kreatures areneck and neck in the Corporate Divi-sion. It looks like this one will comedown to the wire.

As the team competition grows in theKnoxville area, the types of teams anddivisions that we have will continue toevolve. For example, a “wellness” awardis going to be added to the 2009 season,as an incentive to all divisions, Open,Women’s, and Corporate. Eligibility tobe on a team is very simple. Anyone canbe on an open team (all male, all female,or co-ed). To be on a Women’s team...,do I need to say more? T o form acorporate team you may use your em-ployees and their immediate family. Thereis a team for everyone everyone everyone everyone everyone in the club. If youwould like more information, please con-tact me at [email protected] and I willbe happy to answer (hopefully) all ofyour questions. Round up your friendsand come join all the fun!

TWIN CITIES 2008:SPLENDID BUT SOGGY

Middle ofthe Packby Steve Zimo

This past April I ran my unluckynumber 13th marathon…and set aPR finally finishing below the four

hour mark. A few weeks ago I ran mydoublelucky 7, 14th marathon, theMedtronic Twin CitiesMarathon in Minneapo-lis/St. Paul,…and notonly tore a meniscusduring my training butalso, for the first timeduring any of my marathons, had to runthrough a heavy rain storm. So much fornumerology!

When I first started running mara-thons ten years ago I had heard that theTwin Cities run was a beauty. But whatwith wanting to run Chicago, New Yorkand then more scenic (and potential PRfriendly) rural courses, the Twin Citieskind of slipped to the back of mymind,…until my daughter decided tomove to Minneapolis to pursue her Ph.D.at the U. of Minnesota. Voila! Here wasexcuse to go way up there and run the

thing while really going to visit. Anddespite the injury and the bad racingweather, we were indeed lucky to havebeen there.

The marathon adver-tises itself as “The mostbeautiful urban marathonin America”, and that isno lie. In fact it is one ofthe most beautiful mara-

thons in America period. Minneapolishas several lakes within its boundary andafter starting at the Hubert H.HumphreyMetrodome in downtown, the opening14 miles of the course takes your along 4of them before leading to an extensivegreenway along the Mississippi river, then crossing over the Father of Watersto St. Paul. The last several miles of theroute goes along Summit Ave. a largetree shaded, grassy median stripped bou-levard flanked by gorgeous homes andwhich leads to the lovely finish by theimpressive state capitol grounds. Inaddition to the attractive course, the crowd

support was fabulous, even in the down-pour that lasted from miles 2 to 8.Spectators were almost everywhere.Aid and medical stations were in abun-dance and music was all around. Early inthe race I heard someone in the midst ofa long line of spectators playing a tuba. Irecognized the musician as Alan Page, former NFL great for the Vikings andBears, NFL Hall of Famer, and now anAssociate Justice on the Minnesota Su-preme Court. Later on a homeowner onthe route opened up their garage to beused by a mariachi band to protect theinstruments form the elements. When-ever things seemed to get too quiet itseemed that someone from the crowdwould encourage more cheering (aswell as more cowbell). And that cheer-ing and music was especially helpfulfrom miles 21 to 23 which are a steadyuphill!

The race was well-organized, withbuses taking runners from the main ho-tels in downtown Minneapolis to thestart at the Metrodome, and then backafter the race from the capitol to theDome and hotels. The Dome is open foruse to keep warm, get drinks and use therestrooms. There is a 10 mile race as wellas the marathon, but that has a separatestart and course. The marathon start isdivided into two, first the elite and fasterrunners, and then the rest of us about 10minutes later. The finish area is large andwell stocked with refreshment. Themarathon had an announced limit of11,000, and registration was supposedlyfilled within a month, but the resultsindicated that there were only about 9,000actual finishers. (Another 6,000 finishedthe 10 miler)

Minneapolis is a lively city with somegreat food and interesting neighborhoods.St. Paul is more stately and “Old Money”like, and the two together makes aninteresting whole. As for my run, Ihobbled along with pain for the first half, and then took a couple of ibuprofens.Like magic, the pain went away and Iwas able to finish the race in under 5hours. (But that knee let me know aboutthe next several days!)

In sum, a great course plus greatorganization plus a great area equals agreat time. If you ever happen to be ablerun this race, I strongly recommend it.

Fifteen years. Wow! It seems like along time ago (OK, so it was) thatJonas Holdeman and I took an idea

from then Executive Director Allan Mor-gan and ran with it to create therace that so many have enjoyedover the years. Those early yearswe ran the race in August (canyou say hot?) and the racecourse took the runners out bythe ladders that are currently only onthe return trail. We moved to the newcourse in 1998.

This year’s race was a real barn burneron the men’s side as our first ever teamcompetition brought in the boys fromEBS to battle it out with Runners Market. They didn’t disappoint as Chad Newton(Pisgah Forest, NC) and SammyNyamongo (Augusta, GA) stormed outto an early lead. Runners Market’s BobbyHolcombe took it out a little more conser-vatively and managed to catch up on theGrand Gap Loop. The three stayed to-gether until Chad started to pull away onthe deceptively difficult back side of theloop and never looked back. He ham-mered to an impressive 1:47:02, smash-ing the old course record by well over 2minutes. Sammy also managed to squeezeunder the old record in 1:49:23 in 2nd withBobby just a couple of seconds over itin 1:49:31. We’d had only had onerunner under 1:50 in the history of therace and to have three under that markthis year points to the high quality ofthis year’s field.

Meanwhile, in the women’s race,Tracy Brooks of Harrogate, TN wasburning up the trails to take the women’srace in an impressive 2:21:47 (16th over-all). Tracy was followed by Tonya

Lumphrey of Nashville in 2:24:53 andformer champion Marsha Morton ofLafollette in 2:28:14.

The open team competitionwas captured by EBS Team Rac-ing, followed by Runner’s Mar-ket. The EBS women also tookthe title in the women’s divi-sion, followed by Health Shoppe

and the Quick Chicks.

Masters victories went to Barry Lucasof Maryville in a strong 2:02:19 (7th

overall) and 51 year old Sally Brooking(also a former champion) of Marietta,GA in 2:33:39.

Grand Masters titles went toKnoxville’s Greg (yes he’s 50 now)Johnson in 2:11:45 and Sally Evenden in2:40:31.

The Veterans title went to 71 year oldCharley Denney of Monticello, KYin an amazing 3:04:08.

We had a tremendous field fromeight states and Canada, althoughthe gas prices kept a few folks frommaking the trip this year. JohnSwicegood kept his streak alive andis the only one to have completed all15 BSF races; way to go John!

As usual, I owe the success of this

race largely to the volunteers. This year’screw out on the course did an outstand-ing job and included Monte and JanetLowe and Doris Gove (Water stop 1/5);Hayes and Joyce Hunter [The Huntersand the Lowes had to trade spots thisyear because Hayes had a stress fracture;most people would have stayed home, but not Hayes!] and Tracy Lee (WaterStop 2/4); Pat Robbins, Liza Graves,Tracy Rafferty and my wife Mary Nellewere a great help at registration. Our oldfriend and former KTC presidentSherman Ames helped run a great fin-ish line along with Betty Schohl, MayNelle and Pat. Betty also did a great jobin supporting me prior to the race. JerrySchohl did a super job handling pre-race registraton and compiling timelyresults as usual (even after scorchingthe course to win his age group!).Special thanks to Ken Ross who wasout on the course and at the finishtaking photos. Medical Support wasprovided by the Scott County Ambu-lance Service. We enjoyed a deliciouspost-race barbeque lunch provided byour friends at Jim Heatherly Catering.

Runners Market sponsored the raceas they have every year and providedgenerous gift certificates for the overall

winners and much needed PowerGel for the masses. Age Groupawards were provided by Thredsand this year’s super sweatshirtwas conceptually designed byJonas Holdeman and finished outby the great staff at Joe Shirt. Many thanks to the Big SouthFork National River and Rec-

reation Area for hosting us once againand providing such an awesome settingfor our event.

The 20th anniversary of the MillHouse Classic 15K started out asa whimpering understatement.

Just one week before the race, there wereonly 14 registered runners. Though Ihave described this race as ‘KTC’s best-kept secret’ in prior years, it seemeddoomed to extinction. We speculated therace start of 7:00 was the cause, andlamented that this race is too expensive tostage (safely) for sub-100 participationlevels. We just had no clue what wasabout to happen . . .

Mother Nature herself decided tohumble us and display this 20th anniver-sary with a stunning celebration of fallcolor and perfect running temperatures.Fall color was arguably at its very peakthroughout the region, and on-par withthe best color any can remember. Themorning began with crisp mid-30s tem-peratures and warmed to a perfect ‘In-dian summer’ afternoon high of 72 de-grees, the sky was crystal clear cobaltblue throughout the day. Some mightargue for mid-40s or 50s temperaturesfor running, but it is only these extra-crisp Fall mornings that deliver the extra-low humidity to fuel an all-out assault onlong-distance PRs, and that is exactlywhat happened. This has always been an‘insiders’ race, and as the forecast clari-fied throughout the week, KTC’s bestsnapped to attention and registrationsswelled to 147 in 5 days flat; this was thelargest field of runners in the 4 years Ihave been race director, ya caught meflat-footed!

Andy Baksa drew first blood, blowingaway Sammy Nyamongo’s 2005 course

record by 17 seconds to set a newstandard at 46:44. Jeff Day and AlanHorton took 2nd and 3rd place overall.Kathy Wolski was the 1st place femalewith a time of 58:20 (which bested her2005 winning time by nearlytwo minutes!), AndeeCranford took 2nd a halfminute later, and PatriciaSmith took 3rd about a minutebehind Andee. This was the2nd year in a row that all 3top females finished within a span of lessthan 1:45! Post-race buzz indicated manyPRs fell today.

Tom Dever was the male Masterswinner, Jeff Colfer successfully defendedhis Grandmaster title from last year, andMalcolm Oliver was the top Veteran.Marsha Morton successfully defendedher female Masters title, Sally Evendentook Grandmaster, and Shirley Siroiswas the top Veteran. Ethan Turnerrepeated as the top Clydesdale and DebbieSayers was the fastest Athena. In teamcompetition Team Runner’s Market tookthe honors in Open competition (men’sand women’s) and All Kreatures was theCorporate winner.

I owe special thanks to two key volun-teers; Dave Flynn for taking completeownership of the course (course ‘set-up’does not do justice to the support thatDave provides), and Betty Schohl forstepping in to make key arrangementswhen my day job swamped me duringthe 1st two weeks of October. BobCunningham and Paul Barrette handledparking responsibilities for the 3rd con-secutive year; Chris Sentell helped Dave

with set-up and then took 1st place in hisage group. Radio club METRO providedmost of our intersection course moni-tors, and Thomas Booker monitored theRiver Ford – Pea Ridge intersection after

helping out with race bib dis-tribution. Stacy Zazado andDaniel Julian were our splittimers. The water stops werehandled by Greg McMullen,Carroll & Anita Rousseau,Patti Sentell, Jennifer

Wolfenbarger, Amy Holder, and Mrs.Leitch. Betty Schohl distributed racebibs, with help from Angie Manis (andAngie’s results/timing crew) and oth-ers. Ron McElhaney led the finish linecrew (for the x-th time) with help fromBetty Schohl and any bystander wecould collar (we were a bit understaffedthis year).

Richard French delivered another greatjob with sound. We thank the BlountCounty Sheriff’s Department and the ra-dio club METRO for patrolling and moni-toring the course; another safe race in thebooks. Michael deLisle appeared to haveat least as much fun as the runnerszooming around the course on his bicyclewhile taking race photos. Diana Esteslead the Mill House crew to deliver yetanother of their legendary Belgian wafflebreakfasts.

I believe today was about as perfecta day as we will ever get for such an all-out assault on Tennessee’s 15K records! It was so inspiring to just stand andwatch; beautiful performances on abeautiful day, perfection. KTC’s best-kept secret, still!
