Welcome to the Dubuque Museum of Art’s 40th annual Holiday Party & Art Auction—A VERY IMPORTANT PARTY! We are delighted and grateful to you for joining us and supporting the museum.

This year we celebrate our 140th anniversary. The Dubuque Museum of Art is not only the oldest art institution in Dubuque, but the oldest in the state of Iowa.

We are an accredited Art Museum. Our Grant Wood collection is the third largest Wood collection in the world. It is a wonderful representation of Midwest Regionalism. The Edward Curtis Collection includes 722 photogravures of Native Americans. It combines history and art. We support our local artists, provide classes for all ages, care for an extraordinary permanent collection, and present some of the best and most unique arts programming in the area.

Our educational programs include after school and summer classes for children. This year we conducted art therapy outreach programs for Maria House, Teresa Shelter, and Dubuque Nursing and Rehab. Each year we provide a special program called Arts Trek which serves all second graders in the city. Twice a year we offer six-week art history classes during the lunch hour. One of our most popular classes is the Famous Dead Artists series. It is always a standing room only event. Every other year we exhibit high school students’ works from our local high schools. The alternate year we hold our Biennial Juried Exhibition. These shows allow accomplished and aspiring artists to present their work in an accredited Museum.

Our programs provide education, mental and emotional therapy, development of self-confidence, and enjoyment to all.

We know that many of you support us regularly—your memberships, raffle tickets, visitation, and other gifts continue to help us in countless ways. But tonight is special. Your generosity on this one evening will drive our success for many months to come. As you bid, please remember that you’re helping to sustain an exceptional Museum of Art, and you’re helping to make our whole community a more vibrant, thriving, and creative place.

I am most grateful to our VIP sponsors, donating artists, and auction contributors as well as the museum staff and my terrific and enthusiastic auction committee.

YOU make the night. Thank you so much for coming – bid often and bid high!!!

I wish you and those you hold dear very Happy Holidays,

Jeanne Quann Event & Raffle Chair

VIP happeningsWhile you’re enjoying the cocktail hour and waiting to up your bids in the silent auction, take a few minutes to have your portrait drawn by portrait artist Will Pearsall or caricaturist Derek Gunderson. Sessions are $10 each and can be purchased using your bidder number.

n Will Pearsall, portrait art istI was born in a little town called Milford, DE. I am the youngest

child of sixteen. I knew I could draw at an early age. By junior high

my teachers were keeping my art work and by then I knew that

I had something special. After high school I went to study at the

Philadelphia Art Institute. While attending the Art Institute for

graphic art, I continued to do a lot of commission jobs in the city.

Once I graduated from the Institute I landed a job at a major sign

company called “Steen Outdoors” and was a successful billboard

painter for eighteen years. I also painted murals around the greater

Philadelphia area. After moving to Platteville my sister and I opened

an art gallery in Galena, where I worked as a portrait artist. Later I

moved to Dubuque and opened an art studio where I teach classes

and have my own television show called Art By Will.

n Derek Gunderson, caricature artistDerek Gunderson began drawing caricatures in 1995 at the

Crossroads Mall in St. Cloud, MN. Since then, he has delighted

many people with his drawings at high school graduations, county

fairs, birthday parties, and festivals. He returned to college and

received his BA in fine art with an emphasis in sculpture from

Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2002. Before moving to

Dubuque in 2011, Derek worked for Tivoli Too, a 3D sculpting firm

in St. Paul, MN. There he helped create works for many companies

including: Disney, Nickelodeon Universe, United Features Syndicate,

and Great Wolf Lodge. Gunderson has made several commissioned

sculptures for internationally-known artist Siah Armajani. He also

regularly assists Jessica Teckemeyer with fabricating her animal

sculptures. Currently, he works for McCullough Creative in the

production department.

This is it, the last chance to use your bidder number. Help us make our goal of 100% participation! Director of Education, Margaret Buhr, along with her student artists, Katie Mehltretter and Henry Arling are here to show what your support means to the DUMA art education programs. Your donation provides scholarships, art supplies, and art educators, and helps support ongoing programs such as:

• Studio classes for children pre‐school to High School age.

• Arts Trek–annual school trip for every 2nd grader in the school district.

• Art classes for home‐schooled youth.

• Hands‐on art classes for families and children housed at area shelters such as Maria House and Teresa Shelter.

• Summer Youth Art Camp.

• InSite Art Gallery–located in the Museum’s lower level, dedicated to the ongoing exhibition of local student artwork.

Here’s how it works: our auctioneer, Jim Miller, will call out specific funding levels such as $2,500, $1,000, $500, $100, and so on. A level for everyone and contributions are 100% tax‐deductible! When you hear the amount that you’d like to donate, raise your bid number until Jim recognizes your number.
