DEWEY TIME LINESLINES, the theme of this year's yearbook-a reflection on events and
ences that make us what we are. Do important public events shape us or are weproducts of personal events, large and small, that we experience every day?ople of my generation mark our lives by big public and private events: thesination of a president, the birth of a child, anti-war demonstrations, the death
parent. AII of these are extremely powerful in our lives. But we would probablymuch the same had such things not happened. Even cataclysmic events, such
and earthouakes. are often more tests than determinants of who and what. Big events are memorable and make us view life from a new perspective, but
day-to-day life that truly shapes our character. The stream of daily interactionsfamily, friends, acquaintances and strangers helps us to build a view of life and
place in it. For all ofyou your life at John Dewey High School has been full oflife-ing occurrences that have heiped you to begin to define yourselves andrstand your place in the world. It has been a major factor in your transition from
to adulthood. How you have changed and what you have become, though, resulted from the thousands of experiences vou have had in the seven hundredyou have spent here.
a moment to think of the richness of the Dewey experience: the knowledgehave gained in so many meetings of so many subject classes, the ideas andions presented by your teachers that have changed the way you think, the fewgood, close friends you have made who will probably know you for the rest ofIife, the people so different from you, whom you have come to know andrstand, the teachers and counselors who have worked personally with you in
centers, guidance offices. SPARK rooms, and clubs, the enjoyable talks youhad in the locker bays and lunch room. The accumulation of these little things, ening moment-by-moment, day-by-day, have fashioned your thoughts andgs. They have made you a different person from the one you were four yearsThey will persist in your 1ife. Dewey has become a part of you.ofthe staff members take pride in your growth and success and are pleased totaken part in it in so many small, but significant, ways. All of us hope that theDewey memories will become sweeter with age and that they will continue toh vour life.
