A recent Rotary speaker left me feeling frustrated and hopeless. His topic was on the greatest imminent threats to US security. He laid them out

with chilling precision: Iran, Syria, pandemic, and economic collapse. While the question and answer period pointed to some rays of light, it took me most of the afternoon to figure out why I was so angry. What I reacted to was the feeling he left us with of inevitable doom. There seemed to be no hope anywhere on his horizon.

I’m not naïve. I read the news—probably more than is good for me. I know the threats. But it’s not the way of people of faith to let that be the last word. God is always at work in the world, whether it’s evident to the untrained eye or not. And we, God’s people, have work to do along with God—to speak up for justice and righteousness and peace. To be the hope, as we say here at First UMC. And part of what that work entails in very practical terms involves a few things, it seems to me… praying for the leaders of the world’s governments and institutions; praying for diplomats and others working tirelessly behind the scenes to create possibilities for peaceful alternatives; investing in students who will bring the best to careers in diplomacy, health care, human rights, education, and development; supporting people-to-people diplomacy through travel and organizations such as the Peace Corps and church mission work…

The psalmist points us to the God who longs for the day when “steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky. The Lord will give what is good…” (Psalm 85). No time like the present to remember our God and to Be the Hope.

Trustee Mid-Year UpdateWe are thrilled with the progress we have made in maintaining our facilities thus far in 2013. Thanks to all the great work of our trustees, including our newest member Charmaine Nessel, and of course our Senior Minister, Patricia Farris, and our Business Administrator, Christina Eddy.To date this year we have taken on the following projects to enhance our church properties and their use:

• Repair of our beloved organ under leadership of Roger Daggy• Repair of our Sanctuary theatrical lights, including many new lights, maintenance, new wiring, and dimmer controls• Purchase of additional Sanctuary sound equipment to enhance the worship service• Faithful maintenance of our 19th Street Parsonage, including a new roof, landscape, and fresh paint• Extensive plumbing repairs to several lines around campus• Renovation of our Sanctuary sacristy including new water supply, new cabinets, countertops, and paint. Thanks to Dr. Robert Moore for his special gift in celebration of 75 years of membership at our church which provided funding for this project• Installation of a new safety rail to the S-1 classroom generously funded by Preschool parents through the PS Direct Giving annual campaign• Development of general safety procedures and formation of a maintenance reserve fund for emergency situations

We have much more work to do this year, including waterproofing and landscaping of the front planters, re-caulking of the alley stained glass windows, replacement of the wooden platform bell tower and new Fireside Room drapes.I’d like to offer a special thanks to our pledge giving community for fulfillment. Many projects above have been funded from budgeted revenues supported by our regular giving. Special thanks also to designated giving from the Strate family, Kathy Hall, Dr. Robert Moore, United Methodist Women, Karen Furnas, Berneice Southcott/communion helpers, and special thanks to memorial givers honoring our church: the Katherine Crater Estate, Josie Fellows Estate, Graydon Peek Estate; and, lastly, generous anonymous donors for their designated gifts. Our role as Trustees, however, is not only to work on projects. It is to ensure the long-term upkeep of our facilities so they can support the important work we do through our ministries, and to show our community we are alive and well! We thank you the congregation for each and every gift of stewardship, and we understand that stewardship is not just about raising funds for the budget or for these projects, but about each of your commitments and relationships with God. Recently the Trustees, in partnership with the Methodist Foundation of Santa Monica, have begun a Planned Giving Campaign. As you take further steps in your stewardship and understanding of our promise to utilize funds conservatively and wisely, we hope that you will look at how to support the church long term as a legacy giver. Keep an ear out for opportunities to join us in learning and participating in this important next step.Yours in Christ, Todd A. Erlandson, Chair of the Trustees“You are the light of the world.
