Ralph Bunche was a Nobel Peace Prize-winning academic and U.N. diplomat known for his peacekeeping efforts in the Middle East, Africa, and the Mediterranean. It was Bunche’s ability to bring peace to the region of Palestine, the site of major conflict be-tween Arab and Israeli forces after his supervisor was killed, that led to Bunche be-coming the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, becoming the first African American and person of color in the world to receive the award in 1950. Bunche became co-director of Swarthmore College’s Institute of Race Rela-tions by the mid-1930s and wrote the 1936 book A World View of

Race. By the end of the decade, he also assisted journalist/sociologist Gunnar Myrdal in his research for the book An American Dilemma (1944), which looked unflinchingly at racial discrimination in the United States.

During World War II, Bunche worked as part of the National Defense Program and later joined the U.S. State Department, becoming a key player in the formation of the United Na-tions. He eventually left the State Department to join the global organizations’ secretariat.

Black History by Savanah Winn

Our Ancestors fought for us to be great. So they paved the way for our accomplishments of today. Adding to their Legacy: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for equality for all races. The Black Panthers started the free breakfast and lunch programs for the youth. Rosa Parks helped us earn our seats in the front of the bus. Langston Hughes devoted his artwork to African Americans. Bessie Coleman let us know that African American women can be pilots and travel the world. Thurgood Marshall fought to be the first African Ameri-can in the Supreme Court and in his memory we have BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Mary Church Terrell led and won the fight to desegregate Washington D.C. Jessie Owens proved that African Americans can be just as good as other races in sports. Althea Gibson broke the color barrier in tennis. Reginald F. Lewis was the richest African American businessman in the 1980’s. Baltimore has a Senior High School name after him as well as a Muse-um. Barack Hussein Obama II is an American Politician who served as the 44th President of the United States from 2009 to 2017. He was the first African American to serve as President, as well as the first President born outside the contiguous United States. Following your dreams, never giving up, and striving for equality for all is a part of our HISTORY. Our Ancestors were the first to be classified as BLACK EXCELLENCE.

This month we began a Vision Realized Corporate Donation Campaign. The effort invites companies and organizations to become a part of the legacy Morning Star is continuing in Woodlawn. We are approaching com-panies with a package which details our 120-year commitment to building and rebuilding lives and urging them to make a financial gift which will help us further IMPACT lives. We are continuing to develop our corporate con-tact list and wanted to ask members for their additions/suggestions. Perhaps…

1. Your place of employment makes donations to charitable organizations.

2. You know of a company we should include in our outreach. If you had a specific contact at the company it would be very helpful.

3. Or, perhaps your place of employment offers some type of matching donation program and you want to des-ignate MSBC as a benefactor.

Remember our goal is BUILDING AND REBUILDING LIVES. All feedback/suggestions are welcome as we invite others to partner with us. The effort is being developed by our Imagine More Campaign Team and specific coor-dinators are Dr. Anthony Brown ([email protected]), Deaconess Lisa Nettles ([email protected]) and Deaconess Kathy Evans ([email protected]).

365 Days of Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come to you now in the Name of our Lord Savior Jesus

the Christ. Holy Spirit we pray that you hear our voice and lead us in pray-

er. We bow and worship before you. We come to you with praise and thanksgiving. We pray Lord that you

forgive the President and help those that are in his cabinet. We pray that the wicked world leaders shall be

cut off and rooted out. We give thanks for this land that you have given us in Jesus' name we pray Amen

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever

believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life"'. Dear God, this morning

we reflect on these words found in John 3:16. We not only thank you for your love but we marvel at how

much you love us. Forgive us for not always remembering the depth of your love. As we go throughout the

day, let us never forget what you've done for us and, how your sacrificial and unconditional love saved

us. Thank you for your love. Amen

365 Days of Prayer focus for February is “Savior’s Love” “Pray without ceasing” (NKJV) —1 Thessalonians 5:17

Elder Anna Gray

Carl Carrington

Ecclesiastes 3:14-15—"And I know that whatever God does is final. Noth-

ing can be added to it or taken from it. God’s purpose is that people

should fear him. What is happening now has happened before, and what will happen in the future has hap-

pened before, because God makes the same things happen over and over again.” (NLT)

Our Father and God, we come before you this day to bless your name and to be thankful for every-

thing that you God make, are final. No matter what we think, feel, or understand; God your word says that

whatever you do is final. God, we reverence you because we understand your position in and for our lives.

This day God we thank you for allowing us to rise and to give your name honor, glory, and praise. For you

alone God, are worthy and no one else can take credit or boast of your goodness. We recognize that what is

happening in our government has happened before and God you took us through then; even though the en-

emy thought we would crumble, break, and bend we are still standing. We are reminded Lord that you can

do anything but fail and that you alone God are able to subdue the enemy and hold him captive to your

word. Hallelujah to the Lamb of God! God we believe your word that says the weapon will form but it will

not prosper against those who are of the righteousness of God. We are reminded to watch you move in the

spirit as we pray. Let the president place whomever he wants in his cabinet because it is according to his un-

derstanding but we serve a God who understands all things and what God does is final.

God, finally we thank you for your love toward us as we consider making the lives of others better.

Today God we bless you for your continued grace and mercy toward your children. We seal this prayer

knowing that you love us and whatever you do God is final. In Jesus Name Amen.

Minister Karen Darby
