Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“You have heard it said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your ene-mies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heaven Father.”[Matthew 5: 43-44]

How can we possibly follow Jesus when he says such things?! The Gospel is at odds with the very assumptions of our everyday life. The message of Jesus goes against our country's constitution, which says, “Treason against the United States shall consist in giv-ing aid and comfort to the enemy” (Article 3, sec.3, US Constitution), isn't it foolish to follow the way of Je-sus?

Absolutely! We can never pass through the re-sistance of our fears and literal consciousness if we are not able to become fools for Christ. We must read eve-ry text in context and every Sunday reading in light of the other ones. Jesus, at the peak of his Sermon on the Mount, asks if we are more American than we are chil-dren of God. If we are God's children, then we will learn this way of “foolish” holiness that Jesus teaches.

How is this possible? Lent begins in three days. If you choose to honor its way, you may find out. You are invited to Ash Wednesday's jet-start of Lent at 12:10 pm and 6 PM. The bilingual evening Mass will be followed by a “Simple Supper” courtesy of our par-ish council in the hall. [remember to fast!]

Word for the week: Holy: Life-giving, blessed, saintly, divine, consecrated and set apart for sacred purpose, pure, full of goodness, attractive and inviting us to share its life.

Séptimo Domingo en el Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

“Lo has oído decir: Amarás a tu prójimo y odiarás a tu enemigo. Pero yo te digo, ama a tus enemigos y reza por los que te persiguen, para que puedas ser hijos de tu Padre celestial". [Mateo 5: 43-44]

¿Cómo podemos seguir a Jesús cuando dice esas cosas? El Evangelio está en desacuerdo con los supuestos mismos de nuestra vida cotidiana. El mensaje de Jesús va en contra de la constitución de nuestro país que dice: "La traición contra los Estados Unidos consistirá en brindar ayuda y consuelo al enemigo" (Artículo 3, sección 3, Cons-titución de los Estados Unidos) ¿No es tonto seguir el ca-mino de Jesús?

¡Absolutamente! Nunca podremos pasar por la re-sistencia de nuestros miedos y nuestra conciencia literal si no somos capaces de volvernos tontos por Cristo. Debemos leer cada texto en contexto y cada lectura de los domingos a la luz de las otras. Jesús, en la cima de su Sermón del Monte, pregunta si somos más estadounidenses que hijos de Dios. Si somos hijos de Dios, aprenderemos esta forma de santidad "tonta" que Jesús enseña.

¿Cómo es esto posible? La Cuaresma comienza en tres días. Si eliges honrar su camino, puedes descubrirlo. It’s official! The Disciple Maker Index Survey opens this week and we need your help!

Please help us participate by completing a 10-15 minute survey as soon as possible.

There are also opportunities to complete the survey after daily and Sunday Mass, and you can obtain a paper copy in the Narthex/Parish Office or by contacting Barbara Albert at 912-283-7700.

The survey will only be available from 02-24-2020 to 03-23-2020 and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and enable you to provide feedback on our parish’s efforts to help you grow. All re-sponses will be confidential and the parish will only receive information about the community as whole.

We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to Fr. Bob and our various ministries as we plan for the future and strive to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this spring/summer at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish.

Operation Rice Bowl: Our traditional cardboard “Rice Bowls” will be given out beginning on Ash Wednesday. We place these on our kitchen tables so that we can be reminded to “eat more simply so that others can simply live.” By making sacrifices to eat less, we save our change and it adds up for our sisters in brothers around the world who are hungry and need help to care for their own families. Read the weekly sponsored people who we focus on so that we can extend our Eucharist to be in solidarity with these brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. Rice Bowls will be collected from Palm Sunday to Holy Thursday of Holy Week.

LENT is a time of special prayer and fasting. Lenten regulations 2020 for Catholics:

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Fast and Abstinence from meat, which means a limit of one full meal for all between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive.

Days of Abstinence: [All Fr idays of Lent] All who have reached their 14th year are bound to abstain totally from meat.

Easter Duty Obligation: After receiving their Fir st Holy Communion, Catholics are bound by the obligation of re-ceiving Holy Communion at least once a year. This precept should be fulfilled during the Easter Season. Catholics are also bound to confess serious (mortal) sins at least once a year, but this is not limited to the Lenten/Easter Season.

Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast, However, voluntary acts of self-denial are recommended, as well as participating in weekday Mass.

CUARESMA es un tiempo especial de oración y ayuno. Regulaciones 2020 para católicos:

Miércoles de Ceniza y Viernes Santo son días de Ayuno y Abstinencia de carne, lo que quiere decir limitar lo que se come a una sola comida completa para todos de los 18 a los 59 años inclusive.

Días de Abstinencia: [Todos los Viernes de Cuaresma] to-dos los que han cumplido 14 años de edad están supuestos a abstenerse de carne totalmente.

mation and transformation into a Catholic identity. Those inquir-

ers who complete a minimum 8-9 month process may wish to

be received into full communion with the Church, baptized-

confirmed and make their first Holy Communion. Others may

just wish to accompany those who are learning. Jamie Cook at

the Saturday night Mass, December 14, was introduced to the

parish by Dave Cahill at the first of the Rites of Christian Initia-

tion. NEEDED: more sponsors to assist our candidates by

walking with them into their deeper commitment to Christ. Inter-
