FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH September 20, 2020
SERVICE NOTES FOR THIS MORNING “You cannot serve God and mammon” (Matt 6:24–34), for they require two contrary forms of service. Worry is the worship given to the false god of mammon, an unbelieving anxiousness and focus on the things of this world. Faith is the worship of the true God, a confident trust that He is a loving Father who will care for all of our needs in both body and soul. The widow of Zarephath served God, that is, she believed the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah that the bin of flour would not be used up nor would the jar of oil run dry (1 Kings 17:8–16). He who feeds the birds and clothes the flowers will
certainly provide for our daily needs. For He has already provided for our eternal needs, clothing us with Christ’s righteousness in Baptism and feeding us His body and blood for our forgiveness. With such confidence we are liberated from worry and freed to do good with our material resources, especially to those who are of the household of faith (Gal 5:25–6:10).

THE COMMON SERVICE ELH pg. 60 (CW pg. 15)
SERVICE OF PREPARATION
The first part of our service prepares our hearts to come before God. God forgives our sins and the theme for the day is set in the introit.
OPENING HYMN I Lay My Wants on Jesus | 239 v. 2-4
INVOCATION & CONFESSION pg. 60 ♫ In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit. ♫ Amen.
Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
♫ Our help is in the name of the Lord.
♫ Who made heav’n and earth ♫ I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord;
♫ And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
O most merciful God, You have given Your only-begotten Son to die for us: have mercy upon us, and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You, and of Your will, and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only-begotten Son to die for us, and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To all who believe on His name he gives power to become the children of God, and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this unto us, O Lord. Amen.

SALUTATION & PRAYER OF THE DAY ♫ The Lord be with you.
♫ And with your spir - it.
Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank You for all Your benefits, that You have given us life and graciously sustained us to this day: We beseech You, do not take Your blessing from us; preserve us from covetousness, that we may serve You only, love and abide in You, and not defile ourselves by idolatrous love of wealth, but hope and trust only in Your grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one true God, now and forever.
♫ Amen.
SERVICE OF THE WORD
Our service builds towards the hearing of the Gospel. The lessons and even the chief hymn all relect the theme of the Gospel.
OLD TESTAMENT Deuteronomy 6:4–7 4 Hear, O Israel! The Lord is our God. The Lord is one! 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 These words that I am commanding you today are to be on your heart. 7 Teach them diligently to your children, and speak about them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. EPISTLE Galatians 5:25–6:10 25 If we live by the spirit, let us also walk in step with it. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another and envying one another. 6:1 Brothers, if a person is caught in some trespass, you who are spiritual should restore such a person in a spirit of humility, carefully watching yourself so that you are not also tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if someone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 Let each person test his own work, and then he will take pride in regard to himself and not his neighbor. 5 For each man will bear his own burden. 6 Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with his teacher.
5
7 Do not be deceived. God is not mocked. To be sure, whatever a man sows, he will also reap. 8 Indeed, the one who sows for his own sinful lesh will reap destruction from the sinful lesh. But the one who sows for the spirit will reap eternal life from the spirit. 9 Let us not become weary of doing good, because at the appointed time we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the household of faith. ALLELUIA VERSE Psalm 95:1
Alleluia. Alleluia. Oh, come, let us ̀ sing to the Lord! / Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation ̀ Alleluia.
Please stand to sing:
♫ Al - le - lu - ia! Al - le - lu - ia! Al - le - lu - ia!
GOSPEL Matthew 6:24–34
♫ Glo - ry be to You, O Lord!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon. 25 “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 “Which of you can add a single moment to his lifespan by worrying? 28 Why do you worry about clothing? Consider how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin, 29 but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will he not clothe you even more, you of little faith? 31 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the unbelievers chase ater all these things. Certainly your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the
6
kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
This is the Gospel of Christ.
♫ Praise be to You, O Christ!
APOSTLES’ CREED I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy
Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, sufered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life † everlasting. Amen.
CHIEF HYMN O God, Thou Faithful God | 470 vv. 1, 2 SERMON “Freedom from & Freedom towards ” (Matt. 6:24–34 + Gal. 5:25–6:10) VERSE And Let Me Be With All... | 470 v. 5, 8 Your ofering to the Lord may be placed in the back in one of the plates, or you may set up direct deposit by filling out a form available on our website.

♫ We lit them up un - to the Lord. ♫ Let us give thanks unto the Lord our God.
♫ It is good and right so to do.
It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God …who with Your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit are one God, one Lord. In the confession of the only true God we worship the Trinity in person and the Unity in substance, of majesty co-equal... Therefore with angels and archangels and all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

WORDS OF INSTITUTION ELH pg. 78 Our Lord Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples saying: “Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.” In the same way also He took the cup ater supper, gave thanks, and gave it to them saying: “Drink of it all of you; this cup is the New Testament in My blood which is shed for you and for many, for the remission of sins. This do as oten as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” ♫ The peace of the Lord be with you always. ♫ Amen.

REGISTER FOR IN-PERSON WORSHIP If you have not registered for today’s service, please go to our website to register. This is important for 3 reasons: 1. planning and capacity purposes, 2. preparation for Holy Communion, and 3. Record-keeping and pastoral care during COVID-19 in place of physical registration cards. faithlutheranoregon.com/Register HYMNALS FOR FLOODED CHURCH Our sister ELS Church in Midland Michigan which was devastated by an enormous lood, with damages exceeding a million dollars, also lost all their hymnals. They used the same hymnals we have, the red Christian Worship hymnal. Since our church has been preparing to eventually transition away from our current Christian Worship hymnal when it will be “retired” by the WELS next year, Faith’s Council has proposed that we send ⅔’s of our red hymnals to Midland to replace their destroyed ones. We would keep ⅓ to be able to print and use songs from that hymnal on occasion. Eventually,
then, this means that Faith will transition almost entirely to the ELS’ hymnal, the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary (black hymnal). If you have any thoughts or concerns about this, the Council would like to know before sending the hymnals to this church. NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS Due to the Dane County mandate requiring students to attend class virtually this semester, many students with working parents will be negatively impacted. Faith would like to open an “out of school learning space” to host children during the school day. Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning in the evenings. Speak with Pastor if you can help for even an hour per week. RETURN TO WITTENBERG (R2W) R2W is a whole-family conference aimed at providing encouragement, instruction and community on the basis of a shared love for Christ and the teachings of the Lutheran Confessions.
