eptsgg Dear Friends, There may be wisdom in confusion and dangerous arrogance in certainty. Yes, it’s a broad statement, but consider Purim. Purim revels in confusion, for on Purim we jettison the usual restraints of knowledge, perspective and social convention. We allow ourselves, for instance, to parody our rabbis and teachers, which is unheard of (right?) during the rest of the year. On Purim we also bend our identities. We give ourselves license to become someone or something else. Manly men may dress as women, and vice versa. And on Purim one Talmudic sage permitted drinking “ad lo yada bein ‘arur Haman’ l’ ’varuch Mordecai’ – until one no longer knows [the difference] between ‘cursed is Haman’ and ‘blessed is Mordecai’” (Mehillah 7b). The Purim story itself teaches that, as smart as we may be, we never know what might happen. Who could have predicted that Haman would be impaled on the gallows built for Mordecai? Who could have predicted that the disaster plotted against the Jews would be visited upon our attackers? No matter what we know – or what we think we know – Purim reminds us not to be too confident. You never know what might happen. It’s a topsy-turvy world. Much suffering comes from those who believe they know better and more than anyone else, from those who claim a monopoly on truth. Perhaps the greatest struggle of our day is the struggle against an Islamic fundamentalism that gives adherents license to steamroll over innocent lives. The “Islamic State” has unleashed of torrent of horrific violence throughout the Middle East, from Iraq to Egypt. And we dare not believe they will be content to stop there, for Purim also teaches us to be vigilant – even proactive – when it comes to defending ourselves and others against real evil. Purim is more profound than we usually acknowledge. It contains messages about enemies, feminism, power, and the limits of our knowledge. But I would be remiss if I were not to close with the most important message of all: It’s Adar – increase joy – have fun! Joyfully, Rabbi Jeffrey Weill P.S. More recent teaching, and even the Talmud itself, steps back from encouraging excessive drinking, which can be dangerous. P.P.S. If you don’t yet have tickets for our excellent Purim Shpiel, “Li’l Orphan Esther”, you can – and absolutely should – get tickets at the door. EHNTJC RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Shimrah Bullock-Adkins, Chair

PURIM CARNIVAL – MARCH 1st, 2015 The Religious Education Committee is sponsoring the Purim Carnival on Sunday, March 1st from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. Please bring your children, grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. We will have fun and games, as well as a Princess and a Strolling Magician. Children are encouraged to wear costumes and take photos in the Photo Booth. The Purim Carnival is a fundraiser for our Religious School. You may sponsor a booth or activity by donating $50. If you wish to support our school by donating to this annual fundraiser, or volunteer at the carnival, please contact Ms. Shimrah Bullock-Adkins at [email protected] or notify the office. RELIGIOUS SCHOOL FUNDRAISER Support our Religious School while enjoying an evening out! Purchase tickets to see “THE PROPERTY” (A Lyric Opera Production) on March 5th at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts, Skokie, IL. Available tickets: Balcony: $25, Main Floor (Mezzanine): $30, and Main Floor: $45.

“The Property” is adapted from the acclaimed graphic novel by Rutu Modan and tells the story of a grandmother who travels with her granddaughter to Warsaw to try to regain family property lost during World War II. This opera is written by Polish composer, Wlad Marhulets, and told through the musical language of klezmer. This production features Lyric Opera artists and members of Maxwell Street Klezmer Band. For tickets: contact Shimrah Bullock-Adkins at 847-675-4141 or [email protected]. TROPE CLASSES FOR DALET/HEY STUDENT Our Dalet/Hey students continue to take trope classes with Cantor Fortuneé Belilos. They are engaged and excited about learning the musical phrasing and varying intonations of trope. These classes are instrumental in preparing our students for their upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvah services. The EHNTJC Religious School continues to accept Jewel Cards donations (all denominations) to help offset our costs. We appreciate all donations. BAR/BAT MITZVAH FAMILY EDUCATION Our Dalet/Hey students will complete their last class with Rabbi Weill on Sunday, April 12th at 9:00 am. Each student is accompanied by a parent, and the classes have been very interesting.

The Minyonaire Chavorah would like to announce that we have been in existence for over 25 years. Naturally, only a few of the originals are still in the group. Unfortunately, many have passed on or left the synagogue. But, we have added many wonderful people who have been following the goal of the Chavorah, which is to help maintain the daily minyan. We also send in donations to the synagogue and many other Jewish organizations that need help. We are very fortunate to be able to do many things besides the above. We do socialize and friendships have been made from this Chavorah. We will continue to bring updates to you. Our last meeting was held right after Rabbi Brief came home and after Erica’s funeral. The Chavorah ordered a rock for the wall where the Tree is hanging. It is now on the wall for everyone to see. Rabbi and the late Erica were founding members of the Chavorah. Just added to our donation list is a portion of the new daily minyan siddurs was purchased by the Chavorah along with donations from other sources. We are very proud of ourselves for what we do. “The Rising Tide of Anti-Semitism”

by Amy Stoken, Chicago Regional Director of American Jewish Committee, March 22, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.

Over the past several months, and peaking over the summer during the conflict with Hamas, Jews in Europe have been increasingly targeted. Businesses and synagogues have been vandalized and damaged. Jewish citizens have been brutally attacked and murdered. Chants of “Death to the Jews” and “Gas the Jews” have become common place in rallies and protests against Israeli policy. In France alone, we have seen a 91% spike in anti-Semitic attacks in 2014, according to the Jewish Community Protective Service.

As we are making efforts to increase our range of programs and activities we are hoping that others would like to join our Committee. If you are interested in being part of our group, please let the office know.

EHNTJC offers heartfelt condolences to…

Michael & Shaynee Lichtenstein on the

loss of their sister-in-law, Beverly Schwartz.

The friends and family of Founding Member and

former Sisterhood President, Arlene Raskin Mann.

May G-d comfort them among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

In Loving Memory If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a

is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove.
