A new year brings the opportunity to continue to build upon Clara Driscoll’s legacy as Driscoll Children’s Hospital provides more care for more South Texas children. Since 1953, Driscoll Children’s Hospital has expanded its services, honoring the love and consideration for all children found in Clara’s vision of providing quality care for every child in our region.

Driscoll is capable of such innovative growth due in large part to our excellent team of physicians, nurses, and staff. We are all united in mission to provide hope and healing in an environment of trust, compassion, and care, and I am fully appreciative of everyone’s commitment to make this a daily reality.

In today’s world, changes in healthcare come rapidly. It remains critical that we make quick decisions for Driscoll Children’s Hospital, always keeping our patients first and staying focused on providing the best quality of care to our South Texas children. Our future at Driscoll Children’s Hospital is bright with such a strong team behind all of our efforts.

In October 2018, I appointed Dr. Mary Dale Peterson to serve as the Driscoll Health System’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. In this new role, Dr. Peterson is leading the coordination of clinical and support services across Driscoll. She is overseeing system-wide clinical operations, hospital support services, clinics and physician groups, and the Driscoll Health Plan.

Dr. Peterson joined the Driscoll staff in 1984 as the hospital’s second full-time anesthesiologist, and she has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Driscoll Health Plan since 2006, where she oversaw tremendous growth in membership, services, and improving

Driscoll Health System President and CEO

Welcome from

population health in South Texas. The Driscoll Health Plan celebrated 20 years of service in our community last fall.

Dr. Peterson and I share the same priorities, including our commitment to improving clinical quality and ensuring Driscoll Children’s Hospital’s rankings are available for others to see; improving access to our physicians and decreasing wait time for patients; continuing to grow the Driscoll Health Plan; upgrading technology; expanding and aligning our residency program and research methods with medical schools; and retaining the best physicians to provide the highest quality of care to our community.

Not only do Dr. Peterson’s and my priorities align, but we both also are grateful for the opportunity to lead Driscoll Children’s Hospital and the many employees that make this great organization thrive every day. Clara’s spirit is alive and well in our halls and in our specialty clinics where great care is taken to be attentive and proactive in responding to patients’ needs.

As we continue to move forward, our team is excited about the opportunity to welcome to our Driscoll family leading healthcare experts in their fields who currently serve at children’s hospitals across the nation. The talent they each will bring to Driscoll Children’s Hospital will certainly serve as strong additions to our medical team. As we continue to build upon our strengths, I am confident that our future is incredibly bright.

Sincerely,

Eric Hamon President and CEO Driscoll Health System

Now that the New Year is upon us, the 27th annual Fiesta de los Niños is quickly approaching. Fiesta de los Niños will be held on February 8, and as always, will prove to be an entertaining and lively evening of music, dancing, dinner, and auctions. It is the culmination of hard work and detailed planning by the entire committee, with special thanks to this year’s co-chairs, Laura Commons and Karen Haug, all to benefit Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

I want to take time to thank our presenting sponsor, Flint Hills Resources, for its many years of support in making Fiesta de los Niños the successful and sensational event it has become.

As fun as this event is, what’s most exciting is to think of the significant advances in programs, services, and technology that the funds from Fiesta de los Niños have provided for

Driscoll Children’s Hospital. In recent years, because of the response to Fiesta, the Development Foundation has been able to help fund the construction of the new North Pavilion that will house an Outpatient Surgery Center and a more contemporary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

It’s exciting to announce that this year the funds raised through Fiesta de los Niños are going to support the purchase of a new, state-of-the-art CT scanner for the Radiology Department at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

The new Dual Energy/Ultra-Fast CT scanner will enable the imaging specialists to receive much higher quality cardiac images of each young patient in less time and with less exposure to radiation. This significant advancement will truly provide Driscoll the latest and greatest in

this technology and will ensure that Driscoll is operating alongside only a few other hospitals nation-wide to embrace this highest level of imaging.

The Development Foundation is honored to be able to support the purchase of state-of-the-art technology that will absolutely provide better care for our South Texas children. All of the support from Fiesta de los Niños and beyond helps keep Driscoll Children’s Hospital on the leading edge of pediatric healthcare, providing hope and healing for the youngest among us in our community.

Sincerely,

WINTER 2019

A Topping Out ceremony for the North Pavilion expansion was held on September 27, 2018. The celebration was

hosted by Fulton CoastCon General Contractors and Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Hospital leadership, Fulton executives, supporters, and construction workers gathered to sign the final steel beam to be placed atop of the facility.

Topping Out ceremonies are often celebrated in construction as they signify the last beam is ready to place atop of the structure. The ceremony included remarks from Mary D. Clark, member of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Board of Directors, and Eric Hamon, President and CEO of Driscoll Health System.

The five-story North Pavilion will house a beautiful Outpatient Surgery Center and a new, larger, modernized Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The successful futuresbright campaign will also fund renovations and expansions to Surgical Services, including the addition of two surgical suites.

Bob Shockney, Treasurer of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Development Foundation Board of Directors, signs the final steel beam to be placed atop the new North Pavilion during the Topping Out ceremony held last September.

Sam L. Susser, Past Chair of the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Board of Directors, and Lenora Keas, Vice-Chair of DCH Board of Directors, sign the final steel beam to be placed atop the new North Pavilion at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Now at two years old, Eyla Saenz has a smile that will brighten any room and a personality to match.

She recently mastered the art of walking, and with her hands held up for balance, she toddles and waddles all over the place with no intention of ever slowing down.

Eyla’s journey began much too soon when she was delivered by C-section at only 26 weeks, 5 days gestation. Melissa’s - Eyla’s mother - water broke when she was 15 weeks pregnant with Eyla.

“When my water broke, we were told my body was preparing to miscarry and to go home and wait. But each week when we returned to the doctor’s office, Eyla’s heart was still beating,” said Melissa.

At 24 weeks gestation, Melissa was admitted to the hospital to reduce the risk of infection. Her husband, Rick, and their two daughters, Elyse (7) and Emilisa (5), would drive to Corpus Christi from Kingsville to visit momma every day.

On October 16, 2016, Eyla rapidly entered the world after Melissa was rushed in for an emergency C-section. Eyla’s heart rate had begun to decrease.

“She was delivered, and I didn’t even get to see her. She spent one night in the hospital where she was born, and she was taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Driscoll Children’s Hospital the next day.”

Once admitted to the NICU, the doctors and nurses discovered Eyla had a grade three bi-lateral brain bleed and very premature lungs that left her in need of various ventilation machines. She required several blood transfusions and had episodes where she would completely stop breathing for a short amount of time. She also had two holes in her heart.

“Being outside of mom’s environment, the organs don’t develop as properly as they would inside,” said Dr. Miguel DeLeon, Medical Director of the NICU at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Melissa had to wait one month before she or Rick were able to hold Eyla because her skin was still so thin and sensitive. Eyla endured an 81-day stay in Driscoll’s NICU. When she was released in January 2017, one hole in her heart had closed, and the other was smaller, and her brain bleed was downgraded to a level one.

“The NICU at Driscoll was the most comfortable place we could be during those trying months,” said Melissa. “The nurses took great care of us, the doctors were so attentive, and we made many friends as we all were faced with similar challenges.”

Since Eyla’s release from the NICU, she has become the “secret shopper of Driscoll,” her mom says. Presently, she comes to Driscoll Children’s Hospital three days a week for rehabilitation therapy and to see her physicians.

“When I first saw her at the age of seven months, she was basically the age of three months. At that point she wasn’t able to roll over or sit down,” said Dr. Marcos Valdez, Pediatric Neurologist at Driscoll.

Though Eyla has made great progress – including learning to walk last November and becoming quite vocal – she is still developmentally delayed compared to children her age that were delivered full-term.

“The medical term for the delay is ‘failure to thrive,’ but I have never liked that term,” said Melissa. “Eyla has been fighting and thriving since my water broke. She is the most thriving failure I’ve ever seen!”

Eyla’s love for life is quite contagious, and she has won over the hearts of her therapists at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Rachel Garcia, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, remembers a particular session working with Eyla when she transitioned onto hands and knees and crawled toward a toy placed just out of reach for the first time. “It was so touching to see Eyla’s mom shed tears of joy watching her baby crawl,” said Garcia.

Occupational therapy doesn’t only focus on fine motor or hand coordination skills. It works for the whole of a child’s abilities, teaching fundamental skills, building core strength, body awareness, visual tracking, and body positional changes before a child can master a certain task, even as small as grabbing a toy.

“Eyla’s family has been very receptive to all the training and education we have provided. And Eyla has been a real trooper, always with a smile on her face,” said Florence Beattie, Certified Occupational Therapist. “It is gratifying to see her pre-school skills emerge, such as stacking blocks, scribbling, and feeding herself with a spoon. I have enjoyed being a small part of the journey in helping Eyla develop into the precocious toddler she is today.”

It is all still overwhelming at times for Melissa and Rick, as Eyla continues to get older but requires the same amount of attention as a baby. “I don’t really get a break, but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” said Melissa. “And our therapists and doctors at Driscoll are part of our family, and they continue to work with me in any way needed to keep Eyla on track.”

Melissa sure enjoys witnessing the progressive interaction between Eyla and her two older sisters. Elyse loves to make her laugh, and Emilisa loves to take care of Eyla, bringing her toys and blankets. All three girls now enjoy spending time on the floor playing together with a ball and other toys. “They love her so much,” said Melissa, “and they still pray for her every night, right before they pray for sweet dreams.”

While Eyla still faces some medical challenges, most notably of which is her inability to gain weight, she has a great team leading the efforts to restore her to full health at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

“She baffles Dr. Ashkok Jain because she eats and eats but doesn’t gain any weight,”

said Melissa. Dr. Ashkok Jain is Eyla’s Pediatric Gastroenterologist at Driscoll. “But he goes to great lengths to keep piecing together our puzzle,” said Melissa.

“Eyla is a one-of-a-kind, vibrant little girl,” said Grace Duke, Speech Language Pathologist at Driscoll. “When she looks at you with her big, bright eyes, you can see she has so much to express.”

Eyla has become quite vocal, and Duke works with her to become more verbal, forming actual words, word approximations, and using signs to express her wants and needs.

“While Eyla may be delayed in developing speech and language, she has a strong determination to communicate and interact with those around her. She’s definitely a people person and brings joy to all those who cross her path,” said Duke.

Eyla’s full name is Eyla Valyn Saenz. The name Eyla means “life,” and Valyn means “strength,” both of which describe the precious little girl that greets each new day for the gift it is.

Driscoll Health Plan celebrates 20th anniversary

Triumph Over Kid Cancer Foundation (TOKC) offers a Thanksgiving treat

Driscoll Health Plan (DHP) celebrated its 20th anniversary in October 2018 with multiple events at its offices throughout South Texas.

Driscoll Health Plan is part of the Driscoll Health System, which includes Driscoll Children’s Hospital, serving the children of South Texas for more than 65 years.

Located in downtown Corpus Christi in the former Robert Driscoll Hotel, the Driscoll Health Plan staff carries on the legacy of Clara Driscoll, the founder and benefactor of Driscoll Children’s Hospital. As part of the Driscoll Health System, Driscoll Health Plan offers services through managed care, where members choose a health plan and its network of physicians.

Mary Dale Peterson, MD, Executive Vice President and COO of Driscoll Health System, became President and CEO of

Driscoll Health Plan in 2006. Dr. Peterson said at the time she started as Associate Medical Director in 2001, the initial staff numbered less than 10. “That number is expected to grow to about 500 by the end of this year,” she said.

“We have been blessed to hire hundreds of employees who are dedicated to our mission every day,” Dr. Peterson said. “That mission is about everyone working together for the common good, which is service to the families of South Texas.”

The plan, which began operation as Driscoll Children’s Health Plan (DCHP), received its certificate of authority from the Texas Department of Insurance on Oct. 29, 1998. DCHP began contracting with the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to arrange Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)-covered benefits in the Nueces Service Area on

May 1, 2000. The plan had three members its first month and would grow to about 1,000 members during the next month. Today, Driscoll Health Plan serves more than 175,000 members.

Since that time, the plan has greatly expanded its footprint. In addition to CHIP, the plan began offering STAR Medicaid in September 2006 and the STAR Kids program for special needs members in November 2016.

DHP has been innovative in providing improved access and preventative education, as well as implementing health IT solutions. Through grants and community programs, DHP has helped improve the health of South Texans by lowering premature birth rates and reducing dental surgeries in infants and children.

“We are the only plan in South Texas to offer an integrated system of care. All of our staff live and work here to improve the health of our communities,” Dr. Peterson said. “We cherish the relationships with all those families who trust us and welcome us into their lives.

“It has been a wonderful 20 years. The next 20 will be even better.”

&Question Answerwith Eric Hamon, President and Chief Executive Officer of Driscoll Health System

What is a typical day in the life of the Driscoll Health System President and CEO like?

Start early, exercise, end the day late, and then try to spend some quality time with family. Other than these three to four activities, there is no typical day. At Driscoll, every day presents different opportunities and challenges, which I discuss with our team. I do a lot of listening, provide some guiding principles, and then allow our talented team of physicians, nurses, and staff to do their job. Sometimes the best thing I can do is stay out of their way.

What made you want to move beyond serving as the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer after a number of years?

Clara Driscoll started a vision for the children of South Texas in 1945. Over the past 25 years, I have been able to feel, breathe, live, and participate in the spirit of Driscoll Children’s Hospital and Clara’s vision. There is not a better mission in the state of Texas than Driscoll Children’s Hospital. I am humbled and honored, and I respect the responsibility of leading. I am eternally grateful to the board, physicians, and employees of Driscoll for giving me the opportunity to lead this great organization into the future. And yes, Driscoll has an incredibly bright future.

Driscoll Life recently visited with the new

President and Chief Executive Officer of the

Driscoll Health System, Eric Hamon.

A part of the Driscoll team for more than 25

years, Hamon was named President and

CEO in October 2018. Prior to that, he served

and before that, as Executive Vice President

and Chief Financial Officer.

Mary Dale Peterson, MD, MSHCA, was named

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

of Driscoll Health System in late October 2018. Dr.

Peterson has served as the President and Chief

Executive Officer of the Driscoll Health Plan since

2006, where she has overseen tremendous growth

in membership, services, and improving population

health in South Texas.

In her new role, Dr. Peterson will oversee system-

wide clinical operations, hospital support systems,

clinics and physician groups, and the Driscoll Health

Plan.

Dr. Peterson began her career at Driscoll Children’s

Hospital in 1984 as the hospital’s second full-time

anesthesiologist. She went on to manage the care in

the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). At Driscoll,

she served as Chief of Staff and on numerous

hospital committees.

Mary Dale Peterson, MD, MSHCA, named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer

What are some of the skills you developed in your former role that helped prepare you for serving as President and CEO?

Healthcare delivery is a service business and about people. I love people, love to serve, and develop relationships. I have learned to listen more and talk less. Action speaks louder than words. Also, I developed the ability to find good leaders willing and able to embrace a changing healthcare industry. My value diminishes without all the people around me. Over the years, I have been able to adapt to change from regulatory agencies.

What are some of the skills you are working to develop and master to aid you in your new role?

I want to continue to be decisive despite ambiguity in healthcare. It will be important for Driscoll and myself to be adaptable to a changing environment. The ability to see these changes coming and make adjustments to what we need to do will be critical. The Driscoll of today will be different in five years, in 10 years. It is our desire to be innovative and successful.

As someone who’s been with the Driscoll Health System for more than 25 years, what do you consider some of Driscoll’s biggest accomplishments?

There is not just one. Driscoll has numerous accomplishments over the last 25 years. Successfully separating the first conjoined twins in South Texas would be one of these big accomplishments.

What are some of the biggest challenges facing the Driscoll Health System today?

Healthcare delivery is complex and changes rapidly. Our ability to make timely good decisions will be critical. Also, there is constant pressure and more regulatory involvement from federal and state agencies to do more for less. We accept these challenges and will stay focused on providing quality care to all the children of South Texas.

What does the future of Driscoll Health System look like? What is your focus and the focus of the Driscoll Health System over the next three to five years?

The future of Driscoll Health System is incredibly bright. Over the next five years, we will provide more care to more kids. This care will be provided at the utmost high quality. We will work with providers in the markets we serve. There is not another hospital south of San Antonio or Houston that is 100 percent dedicated to children. Our job is to be the absolute best provider of healthcare to children in South Texas.

What inspires you most about working and leading Driscoll Health System?

Every day, I see children’s lives being improved and saved by the care given by the Driscoll Children’s Hospital team of physicians, nurses, and staff. I am blessed and inspired every day I step foot on this campus to see them in action.

Global Institute for Hispanic Health working to increase clinical trial participation

Fewer than 8 percent of clinical trial enrollees are Hispanic and less than 1 percent are enrolled in NIH-funded research, even though they make up 17.8 percent of the national population and are the nation’s largest ethnic/racial minority. This lack of representation means that clinical trials may not provide accurate results for the Hispanic population, who may have genetic or cultural factors that cause medical interventions to affect them differently. One of the goals of the Global Institute for Hispanic Health (GIHH) is to increase this representation in clinical trials. Launched in 2016 as a collaboration between The Texas A&M University Health Science Center and Driscoll Children’s Hospital, GIHH brings researchers, clinicians and communities together.

Clinical trials determine safety and efficacy while looking for potential drug interactions, and this is where GIHH works to make a difference. Due to underrepresentation of Hispanics, clinical trials are limited in knowing the safety and efficacy of drugs that prevent or treat conditions in this ethnic group. Improving access to clinical trials will make results more scientifically valid, and

thereby should make sure the intervention will be more applicable for the greater population.

“The Global Institute for Hispanic Health is a collaboration between our researchers and clinicians at Driscoll Children’s Hospital who have a common goal — improve the health of Hispanic populations and assist individuals with unique health problems. We are creating strategies to eliminate health care disparities and have already funded several projects,” said Carrie Byington, MD, Vice Chancellor for Health Services at The Texas A&M University System, Senior Vice President of the Texas A&M University Health Science Center, Dean of the Texas A&M College of Medicine and Executive Committee Member.

GIHH provides seed grants to research health needs in South

Texas, such as diabetes, obesity, asthma, infectious diseases and kidney disease. Thus far, four projects have received funding. Research teams are composed of clinicians from Driscoll Children’s Hospital or Driscoll Health Plan and scientists from The Texas A&M University System.

Headquartered at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, the institute’s outreach expands to all of South Texas with specialty clinics in Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen, Laredo and Victoria. The partnership aligns Texas A&M’s involvement with other initiatives, such as Healthy South Texas, which focuses on preventive health care for diabetes, asthma and infectious diseases.

“Getting the right clinical information in appropriate patient populations is vital for researchers to better understand health and disease and to ensure that clinical trials work for all Americans. As Hispanic participation in drug trials is significantly low, we identified this platform — the GIHH —to help address the issue,” said Indra K. Reddy, PhD, founding dean and professor at Texas A&M Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy and

executive committee member. “As Texas has a large Hispanic population, this institute helps us recruit a representative population to expropriate the data for the overall population. This partnership really needed to happen; this is a game-changer, it leverages our existing strengths in basic and clinical sciences.”

Clinical trials are the final stage of complex drug development and delivery systems. It takes 12 to 13 years on average, costing $2.6 billion, from the time that a drug is discovered to Food and Drug Administration approval. Clinical trials account for approximately 80 to 90 percent of this total cost.

“We are trying to expand the Hispanic population’s reach to clinical studies,” said Jaime Fergie, MD, Medical Director. “Many times, Hispanics are not in an area where institutional medical research is taking place, and we are trying to change that. I am optimistic, as I have noticed great enthusiasm on both the academic and clinical sides of the partnership.”

A specific community’s genetics, lifestyle and risk factors must be assessed if it’s to benefit from clinical research. GIHH has both academics and clinicians who can properly assess patients, combining practical and theoretical knowledge. In other words, basic science researchers have access to those with clinical experience, and clinicians can collaborate with academics who have with experience in population research.

“The advances in medicine are dependent on the willingness of the population to participate in the biomedical research,” Fergie said. “We need the Hispanic population to participate, the drugs sometimes do not work the same among each ethnic group. We want every ethnic group to be represented, and that’s our reason for being here. This is just beginning, and I am looking forward to the results.”

Dr. Jaime Fergie, Medical Director; Erin Richmond, MS, RN, CPHON, CCRP, Program Manager; and Janette Judd, MSN, RN, CCRC, Clinical Research Nurse, lead the Global Institute for Hispanic Health, a collaborative effort between the Texas A&M University Health Science Center and Driscoll Children’s Hospital to represent the Hispanic population in clinical trials.

Rob Hall, H-E-B Gulf Coast Region Group Vice President, along with his daughter, Catherine, and wife, Stacy, share in the joy of Driscoll Children’s Hospital Rehabilitative Services patient, Cruz Adame, as he “shops” for a Christmas gift in the H-E-B therapy market at the hospital. H-E-B and the Hall family transformed the market into a toy shop for rehab patients.

Eric Hamon, President and CEO of Driscoll Health System, announced the arrival of Santa Claus to all the children’s delight at the 25th annual Holiday Lighting event on the hospital’s front lawn on Dec. 5, 2018.

The 15th annual Holiday Spectacular, a performance by the children, friends, and family of Rehabilitation Services, was held on December 7 in the auditorium at Driscoll Children’s Hospital. Driscoll Rehab coordinates and produces this performance each year so that the children it serves have the opportunity to participate in a traditional holiday pageant, structured in such a way for each child to be successful in his or her role.

Driscoll Children’s Hospital patients enjoyed holiday spirit at the annual Jolly Holiday Party, hosted by the Stripes Child Life Program at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, on December 5. Cookie decorating, arts and crafts, and a special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus helped spread Christmas cheer at the party. Patients and their families also had an opportunity to create a colorful, customized piece of Kendra Scott jewelry, as part of the Kendra Cares program.

Rehab patients “shopped” for a personal Christmas gift of a new toy, after they completed their therapy sessions.

“H-E-B wants to be part of this community, and Driscoll Children’s Hospital is our community,” said Stacy Hall to the families gathered for this holiday event.

“Just as we are your H-E-B, Driscoll Children’s Hospital is your children’s hospital. Our family knows this first-hand, as we experienced incredible care for both of our daughters here,” said Rob Hall. “We are honored to bring the H-E-B team each year to bring joy to the children and to give back in our community.”
