he Sundara Ramaswamy award for TamilComputing for year 2009 is conferred toTamil Linux KDE group. The Tamil Literary

Garden and Sura Memorial Fund KalachuvaduTrust jointly present these awards since 2007.

The official release of KDE 2.0 with Tamil interface is a milestone in the annals of TamilComputing. With contributions from several volunteers Tamil became the first South Asianlanguage to get a computer user interface in theyear 2001. With this the precondition of knowledge in English to operate a computerbecame unnecessary. Compiling documents,surfing internet, using email, editing photos andenjoying multimedia all became possible with afull Tamil interface.

In the year 2000 volunteers who were workingon various aspects of Tamil Linux joined togetherin a discussion group. Thuraiappah Vaseeharn,Dinesh Nadarajah, Sivaraj, SivakumarShanmugasundaram were some of the earlyactive contributors. Most of them were livingoutside India, in the USA, Canada and Japan atthat time.

This group helped address some of the challeng-ing technical problems in Tamil Computing,beyond the Linux paradigm and was operatingvoluntarily. The worldwide Open Source and FreeSoftware Foundation were instrumental in making this possible. The former advocatesreleasing source codes along with programs andthe latter ensures the freedom of users in modifying the codes and redistributing thosemodifications without restrictions. This ensuresthat software is treated as an intellectualadvancement rather than a packaged product.

The Sundara Ramaswamy award committeeacknowledges the extreme technical challengesthis group faced in the early days of TamilComputing and appreciates their solutions.These, no doubt, will help oncoming advancements in Tamil usage in smart phones,e-book readers and the like. The achievement ofthis group with no organizational support andwithout any prominent individual identities islaudable. The Tamil Literary Garden and SuraMemorial Fund Kalachuvadu Trust are proud toconfer the Tamil Computing award 2009 to theTamil Linux KDE Group.

he Tamil Literary GardenScholarship was established inorder to encourage and promote

Tamil Studies in the diaspora, particularlyamong the second generation. It wasintended to recognize the achievementof a student whose essay demonstratesan insightful and valuable discussion ofsome aspects of diasporic Tamil studies.

This year’s topic is “CanadianMulticulturalism - A Tamil Perspective.”The essay should be an original contribu-tion, written for the purpose of compet-ing for this scholarship and should nothave been published elsewhere. Theessay presented this year was well- writ-ten and adjudged the best.

Kirubhalini is an outstanding student atthe University of Toronto. Her interestsinclude exploring issues pertaining torights discourse, post-colonial studies andTamil history. In the future, she hopes toattend Graduate school in South AsianHistory and Politics. She aspires to teachTamil History and Politics at the post-secondary level in Toronto. She hasalso been a volunteer at the Tamil StudiesConference this year.

Fiction award is given in honour of ProfessorKanapathipillai Born in 1903, he received his under-graduate and graduate education inColombo, Sri Lanka, Annamalai, TamilNadu, and the University of London,UK. Trained in Tamil, Sanskrit and Pali,he acquired considerable expertisein the field of epigraphy. After com-

pleting his doctoral studies under the supervision ofProfessor Turner, he joined the University of Colomboas lecturer in Tamil, and later became professor.When

the University of Peradeniya was established, hebecame the first Professor and Head of theDepartment of Tamil, a position he held until 1965. Fora brief period, he also served as Acting Vice-Chancellorat the University of Peradeniya. ProfessorKanapathipillai is known as a major scholar in epigra-phy and linguistics. In addition, he published widely asa novelist, short story writer, and playwright. His playswere performed to much acclaim in Sri Lanka. In addi-tion, he has written a monograph on the history ofSanskrit literature.

received a postgraduate degree in Surgery. Having served as a surgeon for several years, henow works in Family Medicine in the UK. His

wide-ranging interests have taken him into diverse fields, and his current interests include,Sanskrit, Tamil Literature, Mathematics, and Philosophy.

Non-fiction award is given inhonour of Mr.T.T. Kanagasundarampillaiand the Tamil Teachers of theworld.Mr.T.T. Kanagasundarampillai wasborn on 24 August 1863 inTrincomalee. At the age of seventeenhe left for South India and graduatedin English language. He joined

Madras Saithapettai English Teachers’ Training Collegeas a lecturer. At the same time he served as a Tamilteacher at Madras Christian College andPachchaiappan College. He was the author of severalbooks. As he had mastered Sanskrit he translatedKishkintha Kandam and Sunthara Kandam of ValmikiRamayanam into Tamil. He paraphrased severalSangam works and brought many ancient Tamil literatures found in Olai in to print.

Having graduated at the age of19, he entered University ofCambridge in 1924 and studiedPhysics under 9 Nobel Prize win-

ners and founders of modern Physics. He alsohad the privilege of attending lecture by AlbertEinstein in Germany. On his return to Ceylon,after obtaining a first class honors Tripos and M.Aand Ph.D from the University of Cambridge wasappointed Professor of Physics at the Universityof Ceylon and subsequently, Dean of the Facultyof Science, Pro-Vice-Chancellor University ofCeylon. He had the privilege of being the first SriLankan Professor of Physics. For nearly 50 yearshe was associated with university teaching andserved as chairman on many academic councilsand commissions including the University GrantsCommission. He was awarded the honoraryDegree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) bythe University of Jaffna and Colombo. Also, washonored by Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II

with the O.B.E and by the President of Sri Lankawith the “Vidya Jyothi” awards. Served on thecommission appointed by The Ceylon GovernorGeneral to report on the feasibility of teachingScience, Medicine, Agriculture and Engineering inSwabasha. He was a member of the Council ofthe University of Jaffna and also translated toTamil, Educational Publications, and a number ofPhysics Text for examinations ranging from theAdvanced Level to B.Sc. Special. He also popular-ized the field of Science in the Tamil media bydelivering talks over the Radio and Tamil NewsMedia. He pioneered the Tamil UniversityMovement that led to the establishment of theUniversity of Jaffna and later Eastern Universityof Sri Lanka. In recognition of his contributions toPhysics, the academia in Sri Lanka has estab-lished the Mailvaganam Memorial Lecture eachyear at the Physics Lecture Theatre at theUniversity of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Kirubaharan Sinnadurai was born in the Trincomalee district of Sri Lanka in the year 1960. He wasa student in dentistry in the University when he died. Throughout his short life he was an ardentsupporter of Tamil language and culture and committed to its promotion on an international level.An award in Tamil has been set up in his memory. This was translated intoEnglish, Hindi, Malayalam and Hebrew.His second novel "J.J. Some Notes" defied all thenotions prevalent in Tamil writing about formand language. It eschewed narration, brought ina tone of intense meditation on the quality ofhuman life and the problems of remaininghuman. The third novel Kulanthaikal, PenkalAnkal was written in an entirely new style andlanguage yet retaining a solid texture.His poems are a severe questioning into one's

existence, perceptions, conflicts and tireless butoften defeated search. Almost all ofRamaswamy's writings, though reaching limitedreadership, have sustained serious literary workin Tamil during the last fifty years.
