CONTENTS

This month our very bright and summery cover has been photographed by Tania Richards. Her unique style focuses on capturing natural beauty in a diverse and artistic way. Picking up the subtle and quirky details that bring both character and fantasy to her images. Based in Bristol, Tania reflects her personal relationship with the city in this edgy location in the Stokes Croft subway.

The model featured is Amy Willerton, the current Miss Bristol. Amy is wearing a stunning gown by designer Gilly Woo. Tania and Gilly are both working with Amy on her campaign for Miss England.

Thanks to the rest of the team who helped with the creation of the front cover image. Ellie Hicks (make-up), Sophia Di Martino and Hugo Mason (photography assistants).

EDITOR’SNOTE

There’s just so much stuff going on at the moment. We’ve been frantically trying to ensure we cover everything and let you know about all the shenanigans coming up over the summer months

ahead. This month’s magazine is choc full of festival goodness, an amazing article from Simone where she reveals the secrets that your Personal Trainer won’t tell you and a mind blowing tribute to the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson.

It’s been an epic month full of disappointing football (which we do not want to mention), some of the best sunshine we could ask for in this part of the world and the production of this very publication. Sit in your garden, relax and read on…

CYCLESCREENTHU 5 - SUN 8 AUG Cyclescreen’s wide variety of features, documentaries and shorts cover the wonderful diverse landscape, from the bicycle’s rich history, to cycling communities, disabled riders and lovers of road racing, mountain biking and BMX riding.

Highlights include lectures from Cally Callomon (Thu 5 Aug, 18:00hrs), who has been restoring and researching ancient bikes ahead of his attempt to ride a penny farthing from Lands End to John o’Groats, Alastair Humphries(Sat 7 Aug, 17:00hrs), who rode around the world aged just 24 and local

Nick Hand (Sun 8 Aug, 14:00hrs), who cycled 5000 miles around the coastline of Great Britain.

Don’t think you’ll get away with sitting down for too long, though – you can forget the Tour De France because on Sat 7 Aug from 21:00-01:00hrs we’ll be hosting Rollapaluza!, a stationary bike racing competition in the Café/Bar accompanied by live DJs. Race and sweat it out to be the champion and collect some bike-related prizes to go with your well-earned glory - alternatively, just watch the pained faces of the competitors with a cool beer in your hand – it’s up to you.

For those who like to take things a little more leisurely get on your bike at our free pedal-powered cinema between 11:00-17:00hrs at the weekend for some cycling shorts – exercise and be entertained! Plus get informed at our Cycle Screen stands, open at the same time, where our friends from Better by Bike, Lifecycle and Sustrans will be on hand to offer you some practical advice on how to get the most from cycling in your local area.

WOMAD 2010As with previous years, the weekend boasts a strong hip-hop element. From London Town comes Ty, the Damon Albarn-endorsed rapper who’s been in the vanguard of British hip-hop for nearly a generation. Skipping across the Irish Sea, we welcome Kormac’s Big Band, the live hip-hop band led by the much-admired DJ Kormac. And, jetting in from Tokyo, is DJ Kentaro who, once upon a time, won the DMC World DJ Championships at the tender age of 20.

This summer upholds the tradition of having a strong African presence – joining the 2010 bill are the humbling sounds of Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars and evergreen Congolese bandleader Kanda Bongo Man. But, no matter how far WOMAD looks, it never ignores the musical jewels on its own doorstep. Singer-songwriter Imogen Heap, fabulous sarod player Soumik Datta and the skanktastic Ska Cubano (the latter two on the BBC Radio 3 Stage in the shade-dappled arboretum). WOMAD will be held at Charlton Park near Malmesbury, Wiltshire between 23-25 July 2010. Tickets on sale now.

SATURDAY KITCHEN LIVE IN BRISTOLBRISTOL is counting down to the biggest foodie event this year when James Martin and friends will cook up a storm for 280 guests in a live Saturday Night Kitchen in support of the Prince’s Trust at the Bristol Royal Marriott on Saturday 31st July 2010.

James will be joined by fellow top chefs, Martin Blunos, brothers James and Chris Tanner and Michelin-starred Daniel Galmiche from The Vineyard - demonstrating their talents in front of guests who will then enjoy a five-star meal and a packed night of entertainment. Music will be provided by from Darius Campbell, winner of ITV1’s ‘Popstar to Operastar’, and guests will be able to win some great prizes in the raffle and bid in a charity auction with some fantastic prizes donated by South West businesses. All of the stars are giving their time for free to help raise up to £50,000 for the Prince’s Trust which supports young people across the region to change their lives for the better. Tickets are available now at £100 per head via the website www.celebritychefdinner.com - this includes a Champagne reception, five course meal and wines matched to each course.

James Martin said: “It is an honour to cook for such prestigious guests alongside some great fellow chefs – I am really looking forward to it. And it is for a worthwhile cause – the Prince’s Trust work to support vulnerable young people is more vital than ever. The recession has really hit young people in the South West hard and we want to raise as much money as possible to help give them the skills and support they need to make a good start in life.”

Organised by BBC Radio Bristol presenter Peter Rowell the fundraising night was inspired by Prince Charles and looks set to be one of Bristol’s biggest nights of the summer. Peter said: “This is a fantastic night for foodies who will be treated to some top entertainment and delicious dishes from James and the team. We guarantee a night to remember and don’t forget to bring your apron as there will be the chance to cook with the chefs.”

2010 BRISTOL BALLOON FIESTAHeld in the rolling hills of Ashton Court on the edge of Bristol, it is a hugely popular free event, attracting around half a million people from across the country and beyond. The event takes place over four days and this year will be staged on 12-15th August.

This year, the number of hot air balloons will be back to full strength, with 150 of all shapes and sizes providing an unforgettable spectacle as they take to the sky in mass ascents each morning and evening from Friday to Sunday.

Keen to promote local ballooning, the organizers have reserved a third of the places for balloonists from the immediate area. They will get a chance to take part in one of the world’s most spectacular hot air balloon festivals alongside pilots from across the UK and beyond. Fiesta twinning partners in France, Switzerland and Belgium have already booked their places at the event and they will be joined by teams from Germany, the Netherlands, France, Ireland, America and the Middle East.

New to the event this year will be a Bristol food court, with local food and drink makers including Pieminister showcasing their wares at the festival. Local brewer Zerodegrees will also be providing the bars around the site.

The West lawn in front of the Mansion House will be home for the first time to a ‘Fiesta Activity Zone’, featuring water walkers, giant transparent balls which enable people to walk on water, a Go-Ape assault course, climbing walls and archery where people can try out their skills and burn off excess energy. The event offers great entertainment for the whole family. Some of the largest crowds are drawn to the famous Night Glows on Thursday and Saturday evenings, when the balloons tether in the main arena and light up in sequence to music, like giant light bulbs.

FASHION SHOW REVIEW

HOBBSSHOWThe red carpet and glamorous gowns were out in force on

this muggy Saturday evening in Bristol city centre. Outside the Colston Hall, which was to hold the eagerly anticipated Hobbs Fashion Show, the sound of champagne glasses

clinking against each other and music drifting from a DJ set inside set the scene for the evenings entertainment of fashion, performing arts and live acts alike.

The 2010 show promised a combination of talent and culture inspired from every corner of the globe, fitting in beautifully with the famous culture of our city and entertaining us from start to finish with acts such as Beth Rowley, Jay Wilcox, Circomedia, Bristol Costume Services and Heart Shaped things to name but a few, all in the aid of Meningitis UK.

A V.I.P style reception complete with canapés, champagne, Pimms and high security was followed by a hectic rush to the main hall for the show itself, with elaborate hairstyles and impressive dresses dominating the crowds.

The show began with a short video all about Bristol; its heritage, its people, its cosmopolitan population and its reputation as it’s seen across the globe. It was a proud moment for all and set the scene for the rest of this showcase of local talent. If there were any non-Bristolians in the hall, they would certainly wish they were by the end of the film.

Graffiti artists ‘Those in the Flow’ and Break dancers from ‘Squirrels of the Nut Tree’ started the show with a bang, shortly followed by models full of attitude, flaunting the work of ‘South Blessed’. Changing the tone completely, was UWE student Sarah Smith’s balloon inspired designs where models floated around the stage, proving fashion inspiration can come from absolutely everything and anything. Handsome male models got the crowd wolf whistling and in enthusiastic applause for Luke’s collection before Jay Wilcox took to the piano and brought the audience to a calm with this beautiful cover of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s going on’.

La Freak Boutique were a highlight of the show with weird and wonderful designs from air hostess style PVC dresses to 60s hippy attire with an equally as wacky background video. They were in good company with Nicola Donovan’s collection of skirts made from washing up gloves, Bolli Darling and Swinky’s spectacular and super sweet collaboration, a controversial showcase of body

Page 17: EyeZine July 2010

art courtesy of Pierced Up, some sultry underwear from Gilly Moo and a favourite of the night, Johann Earl’s flamboyant designs on models with the most attitude.

Beth Rowley brought the show to a close before the night livened up once again for the after show, with some wonderful tracks from her new album, looking extremely glamorous and ready for fame, before the Hobbs team took to the stage for a finale and endless applause.

The show went on into the early hours with yet more live acts and a charity auction. After such a successful show, mainly down to the wonderful work of Hobbs, who knows what they will create next.

BEAUTY

SANDALS AND SUNBlazing June is upon us and the hot weather

is making us dig those Birkenstocks out of the wardrobe, suddenly you realise that a winter of thick socks and wellies has done

something terrible to our feet.

The horrible truth is that our feet now look pretty uncared for and in desperate need of attention!

A Foot treatment or pedicure is really the only way to get rid of the dreaded Hard skin and cracked heels but a bit of care from you now will help make the transition from lace ups to sandals much less traumatic.

If you can beg, borrow or steal a pummice and find time to have a good soak in the bath then giving them a good once over with this will help no end.

Pay particular attention to your heels and sides of Big toes and you will start to feel the difference immediately.

Check for any nasty fungal conditions which can be a particular nuisance now as your feet are sweating more and buy a decent athletes foot powder to remedy the problem.

If you are feeling really brave you could try pushing back the cuticles (skin around the edge of the nail) with a damp cotton bud and once out of the bath give the whole foot a really good towel dry.

Lastly, apply a foot cream to the whole foot and lower leg to keep the skin soft and supple and don’t forget the fungal powder if you need it.

Now, if you cannot face all this we will go through the whole process in depth for you.

During our Foot treatment we use a foot file to remove more of the dead skin and a manual exfoliator to get rid of any other dry areas.

We let your feet soak in a spa bath and apply a mask to the whole foot finishing with a relaxing massage.

So, If your time is valuable and you would prefer to spend your evenings soaking up the evening sunshine rather than soaking your feet then we suggest you book in for a foot treatment and let someone else do the hard work for you!

A regular treatment takes 45 minutes and costs £28.00.

WELLBEING

Secrets from exercise physiology: the scientific formula proven to guarantee weight loss.

This article is not going to win me any friends in the fraternity of personal trainers. It’s not really an article to be perfectly honest. It’s a lesson in numeracy.

In a time when we are awash with pseudoscientific claims from charlatans, alternative therapists who talk of bio-magnetic fields, ‘energy’, zones and checking out your shit to see if there’s life on Mars, I give you a very simple notion: energy in < energy out = weight loss.

It does not matter whether or not you eat 3000 calories of mung beans or pure unadulterated saturated fat. If you exceed your Total Daily Energy Expenditure then you WILL GAIN WEIGHT.

Unless you are doing lots of intense cardiovascular exercise (90 minutes in duration or more) then you don’t really need to worry too much about the finer points of buggering around with carbohydrate and protein intake, buts its sensible to keep fat to below 60 grams per day if your trying be leaner. But remember, fat helps you stay full, as does protein, so don’t get rid of them. You’ll end up hungry, with blood sugar levels going up and down like a Weston donkey, and in the end you’ll find it hard to stick to a diet of no fat. Fat is tasty, with 9 calories per gram, so respect it and start reading and interpreting labels. (I’ll write another article next month on just how to read the nutrition labels that require a PHD in interpretation.)

The human body is fabulous. Its self regulating, adaptable, self cleaning, and if you can figure out exactly how much energy in calories its needs to cope with what you do daily, then you can begin to tweak the figures to lose or gain weight. For long term loss and no short-term starvation, aim to lose about 1-2 lbs a week by cutting 500 calories a day. Any more than that and you’ll just be losing muscle, which will slow your metabolism and you’ll end up fatter. Lighter, but fatter. It’s a fact. It’s called ‘skinny fat’ which means you’re not healthy. I see it all the time – girls with no muscle, but skinny wobbly arms. (This is a vastly over simplified explanation but like your mum used to say ‘because it just is’).

So. Take a look at the following formulas. Its fairly idiot proof, but take some time to work it out properly and you’ll have the key to understanding how to fuel your body without going into a state of over-nutrition.

Once you’ve figured out how much energy you need you’ll just need to get into the habit of weighing your food and interpreting nutrition labels. For that, you’ll have to weight (guffaw) for next months article.

Till then, get out, move, live. You’re a long time dead.

HOW DO YOU CALCULATE YOUR DAILY ENERGY REQUIREMENTS IN CALORIES?

Basic energy requirements (BER) includes your basal metabolic rate (BMR) + extra energy requirements (EER).

To calculate BMR:

For every Kg of body weight 1.3 Calories is required every hour.

1.3 x 24 x bodyweight KG = BMR(e.g A person weighing 50Kg would require 1.3 × 24hrs × 50Kg = 1560 Calories/day to maintain their current weight.)

To calculate EER:

For each hours training you require an additional 8.5 Calories for each Kg of body weight. 8.5 x training hours x bodyweight KG = EER(e.g. For a two hour training session our 50Kg person would require 8.5 × 2hrs × 50Kg = 850 calories extra.)

BMR + EER = BER Basic energy requirements MAINTAIN your current weight.

CALCULATE DAILY CALORIE DEFICIT FOR FAT LOSS

The following are guidelines and tips to get your nutrition plan assembled for effective fat reduction to improve your PWR (power to weight ratio). DETERMINE YOUR TOTAL CALORIC INTAKE FOR (FAT) MASS REDUCTION

Method one: multiply your weight in pounds by 11 and 12 and subtract 300 to 500 calories to obtain goal daily calorie intake range to promote healthy weight loss. Example: 200 lbs times 11 (= 2200) minus 500 = 1700 200 lbs

NUTRITIONBASICS SIMONE CROCKER

HEALTH, FITNESS & TREATMENT PROFESSIONALWWW.FITLOGIC.CO.UK

SEND US YOUR ARTICLE - WWW.EYEZINE.CO.UK/CLIENTZONE/

Page 21: EyeZine July 2010

times 12 (= 2400) minus 500 = 1900 Calorie range = 1700 to 1900 calories

Method two: Reduce your BER figure by 10 – 20%

Both of these methods introduce a calorie deficit of up to 3000-4000 calories per week to lose between 1-2 lbs of weight. Should your activity level increase, you create a larger calories deficit. Adjust energy intake accordingly to avoid fatigue or excessive hunger.

Calories = Energy/FuelLike fuel for a car, the energy we need has to be blended. The blend that most people require is as follows:

40 - 70% Carbohydrates (sugar, sweets, bread, cakes)15 - 25% Fats (dairy products, oil)15 - 40% Protein (eggs, milk, meat, poultry, fish)

The energy yield per gram is as follows: Carbohydrate - 4 Calories, Fats - 9 Calories and Protein - 4 Calories.

What does a 50 kg athlete require in terms of carbohydrates, fats and protein?

Carbohydrates - 57% of 2410 = 1374 Calories - at 4 Calories/gram = 1374 ÷ 4 = 343 grams

Fats - 30% of 2410 = 723 Calories - at 9 Calories/gram = 723 ÷ 9 = 80 grams

Protein - 13% of 2410 = 313 Calories - at 4 Calories/gram = 313 ÷ 4 = 78 grams

Our 50kg athlete requires 343 grams of Carbohydrates, 80 grams of Fat and 78 grams of Protein.

HEALTH & FITNESS

THE SQUATThis month its the lunge, a fantastic single leg exercise

that requires balance, strength and power. The lunge is a really effective leg strengthening exercise and great at enlisting the help of all the smaller stabilisation muscles

throughout your core.

1. THE LUNGEStand with feet at hip width and take a large stride forward with one leg until you are stood in a split stance. Bend at the knees and lower you body until the back knee is a few inches from the ground. At this point the front thigh should be parallel to the floor and the back knee should point toward the floor. Then push through the lead foot back to your original position.

2. JUMP LUNGE Start by performing a standard lunge, taking a long step forward with one foot and then bending at the knees whilst maintaining a neutral spine. From this position explode upward off the ground into a jump and switch legs in the air, then land back into the next lunge and repeat. This is a great power exercise and requires large fast twitch muscle fibre recruitment making it a great way to improve your body’s ability to perform explosive exercises such as jumping and sprinting.

3. LUNGE WITH ROTATIONIn this variation you hold a medicine ball at chest height with your feet at hip width and as you take your step out and begin to lower your body, you rotate the ball across your body toward the lead leg. Pause, then rotate back around and push back into your original position. This is a great way to really challenge your balance and also work the core stabilisation muscles as you are offsetting the body’s centre of gravity.

Page 23: EyeZine July 2010

4. WALKING LUNGESTake your normal stance with feet hip width and back straight, step out and bend at the knees but instead of pushing backward, push up and forward and without pausing step out with the back leg into a new lunge and repeat in a walking pattern.

5. POWER UPSThis could also be given as a variation to a step up as this is the position you start in. Choose a platform which you can step up onto with one leg, leaving the foot of the back leg in contact with the floor. At this point the thigh of the font leg should be parallel to the ground and the back leg should be straight. Now bend slightly at the knees and explode upward in a jump, pushing up through the front foot. Switch the legs in the air and land softly back into the next repetition. This is another awesome way to increase power in your legs and a really fun exercise to include in your weekly gym routine.

Good luck trying these out and I hope you see a significant increase in stability, strength and power.

MOTORING

By Tim Barnes-Clay

EVERY LITTLE lad goes through a stage of excitedly playing with cars and some men, like me, simply don’t grow out of it. The difference is we’re not

talking toy cars anymore.

So, you can imagine my response when Aston Martin Lagonda agreed to let me test drive their V8 Vantage Roadster. To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. I was off to Warwickshire as soon as my Aston Martin contact could get back from L.A. He called me from the States apologising profusely for not being able to get back to the UK sooner - something to do with aeroplanes and volcanic ash!

After the ash had cleared I was given a tour around the Gaydon based Aston Martin Lagonda factory and witnessed Aston Martin’s being made by local people rather than robots. It was wonderful to see cars actually being produced like works of art rather than mass produced by robots. By the time the visit to the plant finished I was more than itching to get behind the wheel of my V8 Vantage demonstrator.

The Roadster is a compact sports car with two distinct personalities - open and energizing, or closed and protective. I’d go as far to say it is one of the world’s most beautiful cars: elegant, yet aggressive with a low, purposeful stance and instantly recognisable as an Aston Martin. Once inside the Vantage Roadster you soon realise that the car’s interior is just as dramatic as its stunningly fashioned exterior. The instrument pack is crafted from aluminium with a three-dimensional profile for easy reading. The central message displays even use organic electroluminescence (OEL) – a process pioneered by Aston Martin – making them easier to read than conventional LCD’s. Sitting behind the three-spoke steering wheel and feeling the quality of the hand-stitched leather trim has an almost intoxicating effect.

Starting the beautiful beast up involves a touch of theatre. The ignition is controlled by a stainless steel and glass ECU (Emotion Control Unit). The ECU is inserted into a special docking station set within the traditional clear glass starter button. Pressing the ECU fully into the starter button fires the engine. Oh, the sound! You don’t need a stereo - the deep, rasping, buttery burble of the 420 bhp 4.7-litre V8 lump means you could happily listen to just that all day.

Add the engine to the smallest model in the range and you get blistering all-round performance. The V8 Vantage can reach 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds and goes on to an eye-wateringly fast 180 mph. There is no denying that the V8 Vantage is a true high-performance sports car. The engine is willing and the handling is predictable and the good visibility means that the car is easy to use in town or on twisty country roads. And, of course, if you’re interested in track days, this car will handle a race circuit. In fact the Vantage will beg you to take it on a track. It would be cruel not to satisfy its needs.

Yes, the Midlands based company has done a mind-blowing job on this car. It’s thrilling to drive, it draws looks of admiration wherever it goes and it is an extraordinarily competent all-rounder. All in all Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd fulfilled my boyhood dreams by letting me drive this tour de force. It’s something I won’t forget and nor will anyone else who gets behind the wheel of the remarkable V8 Vantage.

MAZDA 6 FACELIFT (2010)By Tim Barnes-Clay

I normally test my cars in England – but stunning Scotland provided the scenery for the recent UK launch of the upgraded Mazda 6.

Inverness is truly beautiful, and the drive out towards Loch Ness does any car justice. The roads give you a chance to really drive. There are no traffic jams - just lots of hills, twisty bends and long stretches of open tarmac where you can really enjoy the feeling of freedom behind the wheel. The latest version of the Mazda 6 didn’t disappoint.

So what does the facelifted 6 look like? Well, at first glance, the car is not much different to the older model, but as you get a little closer you see the front and rear have been restyled. The 6 now features Mazda’s distinctive new family face complete with restyled silver-backed headlamps and fog lamp bezels. Similarly, the rear of both hatch and estate boast good-looking new taillights.

These exterior changes are complemented inside with contemporary silver ringed dials and controls, while the centre console and steering wheel spokes are finished in a high gloss black trim. But what is immediately noticeable is the improved sweeping dashboard with its softer casing. This gives the whole cabin a higher quality feel. That’s not to say that Mazda has binned all of its cheaper looking interior plastic mouldings – bits and pieces have still found their way in.

The Mazda 6’s four familiar equipment levels – S, TS, TS2 and Sport – all deliver great safety and kit. Upgraded equipment includes ‘smart’ turn indicators and Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) for all models, while higher-end models like the magnificent 170ps 2.5 litre Sport get a funky new rear spoiler, front and rear parking sensors, Hill Hold Assist (HHA) and active Bi-Xenon AFS front lights.

The fresh-look Mazda 6 range comes with a choice of six engines – three petrol and three turbo diesel, available with five and six-speed manual transmissions or five-speed auto boxes. The petrol versions range from the 120ps 1.8 litre and 155ps 2.0 litre to my favourite – the rapid 170ps 2.5 litre performance flagship. The diesel range involves three variants of Mazda’s 2.2 litre turbo-charged powerplant which delivers 129ps, 163ps and a very meaty 180ps.

The Mazda 6 promises to deliver better economy and lower emissions than before. CO2 emission levels are from just 138g/km with a combined economy of up to 54.3mpg. But it’s not all about being green and

Page 27: EyeZine July 2010

destinationclifton destinationclifton.co.uk

economical; steering and suspension have been enhanced to give a more sporty and dynamic driving experience, making the car real fun to drive.

If you’re more of a badge polisher than an engineering expert, you’ll be pleased to know that I reckon the bold new styling of the car is first rate. Put it this way, if need a family car but you still want a sporty, affordable, sexy looking car, then you’ll enjoy seeing this sitting on your drive. You’ll even be able to find the money for a valet occasionally with the cash you’ll undoubtedly save from the Mazda 6’s clean and fuel efficient engines. Yes, priced from £16,995 to £23,445 on the road, this car delivers great value and top-notch performance. And with Mazda’s legendary reputation for reliability, you can’t go far wrong.

THE EXPENDABLESAn assembly of hired guns are sent on a mission to a South American country, with the objective to overturn the cold-blooded Tyrant in charge. As the mission begins, the mercenaries discover that the situation is not as it appears. The men find themselves trapped in a deadly game of deception, with a traitor amongst their ranks.

This is not just any team of mercenaries, this is a quite frankly incredible line up of the most celebrated all out action heroes brought together on one screen. A feat which could only be possible by one of the most celebrated action stars, Sylvester Stallone. Stallone directs the film alongside Dave Callaham and welcomes to many action A-listers to mention.

This is our must see film of the summer.

The line up: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham, Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austen, Eric Roberts, Terry Crews

Release Date: August 20th

Most suitable for: The ardent action movie fan, and anyone who has ever watched one of these stars go to work (so that’s everybody then).

TWIGHLIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSEThe hugely anticipated third instalment of Meyers Twilight Saga.

Bella Swan is reunited with the love of her life (and vampire), Edward Cullen. Her life is back to the way it was except for one major thing, since Edward left Bella has befriended his arch enemy Jacob (werewolf). Bella is trying her best to end the feud between Edward and Jacob but finds herself torn between love and friendship.

To add to this, an army of murderous vampires hell bent on destruction is stalking Seattle. The question being, who is behind this, and how does it connect to Bella?

With over 20 million books sold, its likely to appeal to a huge market, so settle in for part 3 of this great adventure.

The line up: Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner

Release Date: July 9th

Most suitable for: From romantics to adventure lovers and teens to adults.

INCEPTIONSci fi thriller based on dreams, where the scene of the crime is the mind, Dicaprio plays Dom Cobb a skilled thief in the art of extraction, the character infiltrates the subconscious mind to extract its owners most hidden secrets.

Cobb has plied his trade in the lucrative world of corporate espionage, left with one last job instead of stealing a thought he must plant one (Inception).

Spookily the Director Christopher Nolan has spoken out that everything in the film has a basis in reality only the technology is out of reach.

The script has been 10 years in writing so expect twists and turns and a thoughtful plot. This will be rather complex so go in wide awake and ready to absorb.

The line up: Leonardo Decaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine

Release Date: July 16th

Suitable for: Fans of the matrix, memento and the thirteenth floor will have something to get their teeth into. A highly anticipated film in the Eye office.

FILM REVIEWS

THE CRAZIESLets get this straight from the start, I am not a fan of the scary movie. Nor am I a fan of gore. I cant cope with it, so to me watching a ‘scary’ film is like a race, I am very proud of myself if I reach the end. But for now this is not the point, you want to know if you should be watching this film not me.

The Crazies is a remake of the seventies film of the same name, it’s the story of a small town plagued by insanity and then death after they are contaminated by a mysterious toxin. It is nothing that hasn’t been seen before, The small town is like every other in a horror film, you can tell exactly who is going to live and who will meet a grizzly end. There is nothing new or shocking about it. But its still good fun. There are, while yes reasonably predictable, shocks and jumps to make it worth watching. If you like this kind of film then it doesn’t venture too far away from any normal formula to disappoint. And if you don’t like this kind of film and are a big a wimp as me, its not too shocking or disturbing to completely put you off watching. If I made it through you most certainly can.

This film wont change you life but it will wile away a DVD night with friends. Get the popcorn in.

THE LOVELY BONESWhen I started watching this film I knew what it was about, I hadn’t read the book but knew enough about it to know it is about the death of a teenage girl. I prepared for sadness. Sadness was an understatement. For those not in the know, The Lovely Bones is director Peter Jackson’s version of the book of the same name. The story of Susie Salmon, a fourteen year old girl, murdered. She is stuck in a place between earth and heaven, watching the events after the death unfold on earth and seeing how the people who loved her most cope.It is beautifully filmed, and feels like several movies in one. Which is a good thing, although yes, sometimes Jackson

jilts slightly between stories there is enough background and symbolism to hold everything together. It looks visually stunning, the world in which Susie is stuck is both beautiful and moving. And the portrayal of her killer genuinely creepy.I had two problems with this film, firstly the pay off at the end was not satisfying, its hard to explain without giving away spoilers, but I longed for something more. Something... happier. I was in more tears than I can remember being in for a long time (and I am a big crier) and that was my second problem. I don’t mind crying at a film, I am known among my friends for being the weeper, but The Lovely Bones made me so upset that even though I really enjoyed it I don’t think I could ever bring myself to watch it again. It was just so sad.

A gorgeous film, and dare I say it Peter Jacksons best work (don’t lynch me Rings fans) just watch it with company and several boxes of tissues.

YOUTH IN REVOLT

The story of a boy (Michael Cera) who will do anything for the girl of his dreams. Including creating an alter ego and becoming a bad ass because she is tired of ‘nice guys’. Its Cera at his best. Yes he is still playing the geeky, awkward teen he always plays, but when it comes to playing his alter ego he does that brilliantly too. The film has hints of a teenage Fight Club about it in the split personality department. And his adventures to win over the girl are incredibly funny and sweet all at the same time. Full of cameos from Steve Busemi to Justin Long its just the right side of Indie flick for my liking. It has cute animation and fun set pieces. Overall it is just good fun. (And also based on a book fact fans)

If you like this try Eagle V Shark and Ghostworld to continue an cute Indie flick night in.

RC: Tell us a bit about yourself? Don’t be shy.

SS: Hmmm, how does one talk about themselves?? Ha Ha, well, I’m a self-proclaimed Music lover from the B-Girl era with a back-seat-of-my-mamma’s-car education in Music. Meaning, that’s where I first heard some of the best tunes ever, and also most of them for the first time there. Jazz, Hip-Hop, R&B (classics), Punk, and even classic rock were all part of that education growing up, until I eventually turned to the “new wave” movement of artist that were coming out of England in the 80’s (like most around my age, I suppose). I’ve been Djing 17yrs. and producing for about 12 of those years. Umm, I’ve played piano since I was three, can read sheet music but am more of a “play-it-by-ear” type of musician. Music has been a vital part of my life for as far back as I can remember, and when I think back to times of my Shorty-hood it’s usually accompanied by what song was playing at that moment. I am currently holding down a residency for a monthly event called “Cill-It-Bang” that is an old-fashioned warehouse party. I love it! Also, I’m back in the studio working on music for myself, as well as working on 2 new projects called, “NY-Lon”, and producing an album for a singing group called “Dropouts”. It feels pretty damn great to be back on the music since moving over here so, I can’t really complain.Growing up, I was a military brat so we moved around a lot. The most recent cities I’ve lived in since leaving Texas are Chicago, Los Angeles, and now London. On the personal, I enjoy travelling, beaches, cooking, photography and that sort of stuff. :)

RC: I can tell you like your attention to detail! So why make the move from the home of House to London?

SS: I recently re-located to London after I got married in 2009. I’d spent time here a few times before and well, the city reminds me a lot of Chicago so I feel very comfortable here. Yes, I do Love it!! But let’s be real, it’s pretty far from my Family so... I’m working on a plan to build a toll-bridge across the pond, ha ha ha!

RC: How do you feel about the current state of music today?

SS: Wow, I think it depends what sort of music you’re asking about specifically, lol, because there is a lot of crap out there right now passing for “music”. As far as House Music goes, I

SISTASTROKE

You know what, I can tell that the summer is here… I’m working my butt off, I’m struggling to find my flip flops every ten seconds and the gigs are coming thick and fast. There doesn’t seem to be five minutes spare where I can eat or sleep.

This summer Glastonbury and the world cup are upon us at the time of writing and I intend to enjoy them both

by the time of reading! Hopefully you will be enjoying both as well with fingers and all other appendages crossed for England. Here’s to hoping they haven’t crashed out!

Also this year I’ll be playing out in Corfu with my old mucker the Yanman for a well deserved busman’s holiday. Playing on a beach somewhere, trying NOT to think of England and throwing down beats to a sunset backdrop… I actually can’t wait!

This month I’ll be interviewing the one and only Sista Stroke from Chicago. I met her a few years back in Bristol at the now defunct Soda bar… I think she wrecked the dance floor so much the place actually had to close down! I had a chance to catch up with her to see what she’s been doing…

have hope. There was a large gap between 2008-2009 where my doubts and worries we’re seriously being entertained, as new House Music wasn’t.... hmmm...well, I just wasn’t feeling as much as I had for the last 15 years. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand ‘change’ and that all things must change. But I felt as if a lot of up-and-coming producers weren’t paying homage to this music that they were trying to simulate (not sure if that’s the proper word to describe it, but it comes close enough).

RC: You have a couple of radio shows on the web and I’ve also been told you have a show on De la souls hip hop station. How did you manage that as a House DJ?

SS: I was actually offered the slot by someone associated with the [de la soul’s] Dugout. DJ Dummy, I met through his show, The Breakfast Club, introduced me to DJ Maseo and it sort of went from there. Dummy had a gig and couldn’t cover his 6pm show, “Crash Test”, and asked me to cover for him - knowing I play House. It went over well, a vote was taken (apparently) while I was doing my show and that weekend an offer was made. Beatminerz Radio ended up picking it up and now, few months later, I’ve got “Freak Freely Friday’s”. Guess you could say its syndicated, lol. We call ourselves “One Nation Radio” and I’d by lying if I didn’t say that I enjoyed being one of the only strictly-playing House shows. I also hold down a radio show called Brick City House on ChicagoHouseFM.com every Wednesday’s at 7pm GMT. We’re a year and half into it and going nowhere! BCH!

RC: What do you think of the current trend of reality based singers/musicians?

SS: To be fair I really can’t speak on this. The limit of my reality shows is American Idol and X-Factor. Not a great foundation to be based on, ha ha ha. So ... pass.

RC: What is your view on the current technology that is being used by DJs & Producers..?

SS: See, this is a tough question for me. But I’ll keep it simple of the products I’ve used and like. For Djing, Serato. I love it and have nothing bad to say about as it’s lighter, easy to use, and pretty great when things run smoothly. Torque is cool too, but I’m still on the fence with it. As for production, I’ve just started using Ableton. But let me say here and now that I am a die-hard Cubase Lover. “Technology is a wonderful gift to us; however, don’t depend on it as an artist.”, that advice was given to me 17yrs ago and I’ve never forgotten it.

RC: What are the key things you look for when you’re trying to break a fresh new track when touring?

SS: Man, so many elements come to mind but I think the one thing I can pin-point for sure is: stamina. Ha ha. No really, I want to make sure that if I’m going to drop it it’s going to be able to keep-up or even add to the tunes I’m already beating out. I don’t look for one element in a track, rather I look at what it’s going to bring to the tunes I already have going in my crate. Perhaps my view, musically, is a bit different but this method works for me.

EYE.BRISTOL.JULY.2010

SISTA STROKE

Page 33: EyeZine July 2010

RC: Who is your favourite DJ(s) Other than yourself?SS: Well there’s a few DJs that have been moving me for years, and as of lately. However, since I got into this game I think the one DJ that I really connected to, musically, was Heather. I’d heard her play Hip-Hop back when I was just starting out and well, yea, guess you can say that since that day she’s been my favourite DJ. Mr Hun (London) is in a close tie though.

RC: Do you have any tips for the up and coming budding djs out there?

SS: Play what you feel, but don’t forget that you’re also playing for an audience who came to share in an experience. Look up, acknowledge that they’re there, and interact with them; I mean ... I think some of us forget to do that enough. At the end of the day, most time these people have paid hard-earned wages for entry to a club where they fully want to “forget” what’s on the other side of those doors when they leave. Another great hint: Know your music. I can’t express that enough!

RC: Did the Djing or the Production come first?

SS: Definitely Djing. I wanted to produce music and had 2 drum machines before I even had decks. But in order to be able to understand one aspect I needed to fully understand the foundation. In this case, it was Djing.

RC: What was the first record you ever bought for yourself? SS: The Beatles Anthology and Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life”. Both were purchased at the same time, and I thank my mother for that allowance that enabled my habit!

RC: So how is the house scene in your eyes at the moment?

SS: Struggling. I’ve always felt that House Music is the bastardized take-on of Disco, and for some reason it sometimes feels like we inherited Disco’s stigma’s from the 70’s. Though it was a successful carry-over (thanks to it’s going back underground to simmer and mature), I still feel sometimes that House Music should be further than it is. I mean, I don’t want to be saturated with every advert drenched in a 4 on the floor beat ... but a wider respect from Critics, Marketing people, media - both print and film - would be a nice acknowledgment for over 30 years of hard-work from House Producers and DJs alike. When it comes to the scene in itself, well, let’s be real, that falls on the people. More people should be supporting their local Underground, DJs, and events. Full-stop. Without the people’s support local scenes will not be able to support themselves. And it goes deeper than that. No local events mean no local DJ talent is able to rise up and bring the music that’s moving the masses right now. It also means that those people that already do support their scene have no where to go and work out that week-long strife that’s been building up. Makes for a very sad society with nothing to do and no place to express, and I personally never ever want to see that in my lifetime. So I’m doing what I can to ensure that I at least contributed.

RC: Funniest thing that ever happened at an event/gig?

SS: Hmmmm ... this may be a little to perverted but, I was getting a guy so... ermm... off, that he had to get one out. Meaning, I looked down from my decks to him and noticed that he had one fist in the air and the other... ermmm ... “werking it” on himself. I was complimented and repulsed all at the same time, hahaha!!

RC: What do you do outside of the dance music scene? SS: I offer my promotional services to others. So if anyone needs promotions, just let me know! At the end of the day, the more people that know what’s going on the more people you just might get out supporting.

RC: Knight Rider or A-team? SS: Neither. Wonder Woman.

RC: where can we find more info on your good self?

SS: I’ve got a few places on the web. www.Virb.com/sistastroke for mixes, original production, remixes, etc. or www.BrickCityHouse.beatmaven.com for info, Guest DJs, new BCH shows, mp-free give-away’s. Or you could always Google my name!

MUSIC REVIEWS

DONAEO - IM FLY

He’s back and about time. Have to say, Donaeo is a Big deal on the UK Urban front and has been around for a while. Music has always been in his blood ans his musical talented teen days with underground UK garage, brang us song like ‘Fallin’ and ‘Bounce (My philosophy)’. His was managing, promoting and making his own musical work across the UK Funky House scene where he blew up with ‘Devil in a Blue dress’ followed by his most successful track ‘Party Hard’. Now he’s keeping up the consistency from his huge hit with a new PR team and has produced another smash sure to have clubs and dance floors moving around the world.

“I’m Fly” is the first official release from Donaeo’s self titled second album and will be available for download on the 19th of July through Myish/Zephron Music. Its grower and I feel a huge one to sing with but I know some people will be thinking ‘Crazy frog!??’… Just get it and judge for ya self.

LLOYD BANKS FT LLOYD - ANY GIRL

What’s better then one Lloyd…? Two Lloyds of course. A few years back this wouldn’t of been the case as both worked as rivals against each in through their Signed labels. What a mess that was… The Ja Rule vs 50 Cent era which pulled in G-Unit & Murder inc battleing in their music and one liners to dig at each other. We’ll the boyz have squashed the beef and got to work on Lloyd Banks next single. Following ‘Beamer, Benz or Bentley’ immense success, Lloyd-squared join forces to create a decent club song for all the ladies. A simple but effective chorus courtesy of Lloyd explains the song’s purpose: rich guys named Lloyd can have any girl that they choose (boys, get a loan and change ya names).

Glad they are both bank for 2010, not sure this track will be as big as the first but for the smooth rnb/hip hop clubbers, you’ll like it. Upcoming album Hunger For More 2 will be coming soon.

JEREMIAH FT LUDACRIST - I LIKE

Gotta have one slow ‘watch the sun go down’ track after all the party tracks and who better to hit the mood then Jeremiah. The Birthday Flirting romantic has produced another bedroom only song, which will have men Thanking him for those seduction moments. Guys you cant hate as most men like these tempo tracks as mush as the females… and J delivers. Its not birthday sex which lets be honest is the stamp to why he’s still here, but it give the same message and as the track is untitled… ‘I like’… I do like. Its has the past elements - a hypnotically sparse melody, steamy lyrics, a woozy, minor-key beat, Yet somehow its still feel fresh. Track bonus is help from the phenomenal hip hop beast, Ludacrist as well, who somehow gets away with rappin another slow jams so well.

No idea on album release date but it will be with def jam, untitled ‘All about you’ - hopefully sooner then later.

GET WILD - KANO FT AIDONIA & WILEY

Had to get a review on this As it hit the airwaves and media world early from the last months review issue. Its another UK East London star by the name of Kano. He’s been extremely busy and collaborating with so many European productions and teams which is positive and makes such a diverse combination of good music. His roots are in Grime and fully respects keeping his head level not to lose what made him the man he is today. This track invites you on his journey from the UK to Jamaica and back to bring you his new club smash, “Get Wild”, produced by those talented German men Boys Noize with guest features by dancehall don Aidonia and godfather of grime & uk charts,Wiley.

It’s the first track released from his forthcoming fourth LP, Method To The Maadness, out August 2010

As well as working for Kiss, DJ’ing for various nights across the UK and writing music columns, Ant also gets into the studio to produce various tracks with other DJ’s.

ROBYN – BODY TALK (PART1)It’s nice when an artist you respect brings out a new album in a year but when they plan on bringing out three in any 12month period you have to ask if they are holding something back for a reason? Swedish pop riot girl Robyn plans on bringing out three albums in 2010 starting with the aptly named Body Talk (part1). Everyone might remember her more for tracks such as With Every Heartbeat which notched up to number 1 back in 2007. She has taken some time out imbetween such tunes and its fair to say probably managed to stockpile some material for new ventures … but three whole albums worth? This is the first of the three part, with parts two and three out later this year as we head into autumn and winter. Two tracks to check out which spring out, Cry when you get older and the more impressive Dancing On My Own which you can hear on my Kiss show. Just need to hear parts two and three now!

DENNIS FERRER – HEY HEYThe Defected label have come out with big tunes in their time and this one is no different. Catchy and sexy were just two words used to describe this track after asking some self confessed music junkies to sum up the tune. Whether you are familiar with the work of Dennis Ferrer, it’s clear there were probably a few versions before the end product came to live, as this has been put together with a lot of care and attention. The catchy hook of ‘Hey Hey’ which pulls you in and through this track coupled with a delicious vocal. If you are into something a bit tougher and with a bit more beef then check out the Vandalism remix which punches well above the Original.

5UPER 8BIT – FIND ROMANCE

This track is taken off 953recordings showcase for summer anthems. 5uper 8bit is from the US and is bringing out this infectious track called ‘Find Romance’. Out of a package of literally tons of mixes I have singled out the more electro ‘DJ Aymen Remix’ which I think you will agree when you hear it, really bounces you along through a rift of really nice tech sounds in what is a really energetic track. For me male vocals don’t always cut it against female ones, but this track blends a male vocal with ease to bring alive what is bound to be a big tune this summer.

RELEASE DATE: NO DATE AS YET

SUNFREAKZ – MY LOVETaken from the Dirty Soul Label, Sunfreakz is back with another killer tune for the summer of 2010. Sunfreakz (real name Tim Janssens) isn’t a stranger in producing some amazing sounding tunes. For those who remember ‘Counting Down The Days’ which I battered on my Kiss show back in the summer of 2007, you will know it was full of piano driven rifts. Couple that with a vocal from Andrea Britton, and you are set for a tune which sounds amazing.

Sunfreakz now has a new tune. The vocals are provided by Dawn Joseph; the track is called ‘My Love’. Perfect for the summer and bound to make it big in Ibiza. The Original Mix had all the essential elements for a really strong summer track. If you want something a big beefy and a bit more electro, then check out the R3hab mix which has an almost tribal electro sound to it. The Down By Sea Mix has such a nice summer sound to it. But the best mix has to be the Essential Grooverz remix which has some amazing saxophone, nice chunky basslines and just the vocal to bring it all together. It’s my essential tune for the summer.

MICHAEL JACKSON

THEKINGOFPOPFor followers of the entertainment

world, June 25th, 2009 will be a day they will never forget. Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star of all

time, collapsed in his rented Californian home and was whisked by ambulance to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, where doctors frantically tried to revive him, after he had suffered heart failure.

As the news of the shocking crisis spread, worried fans gathered outside the hospital and other spots throughout the country-and the world-to pray for the beloved singer. Sadly, when Michael Joseph Jackson tragically died, two months shy of his 51st birthday, it seemed as though the whole world suddenly stood still and went into mourning.

The outpouring of grief from his fans has been tremendous and something rarely matched in the history of music and entertainment, but that’s the power of a man who was called a King, crowned a King, and truly was, as his dear friend Elizabeth Taylor once declared, “the King of pop, rock and soul”.

James Davies- who attended the press conference at which Michael spoke enthusiastically about his forthcoming This Is It tour- proudly presents this personal

tribute to the star, whose musical genius and creativity earned him the undisputed title: ‘The King of Pop’.

Millions of people around the world will have their own memories of Michael. I’m no different, other than the fact I was fortunate enough to grace the great man’s presence while he was in London promoting his final This Is It tour. Having been invited to Michael’s press conference, shortly before his death, I was able to see, up close, the man who, with the mere mention of his name, is able to stop the world go by.

The excitement that surrounded the superstar was incomprehensible to someone who hasn’t ever seen or experienced it. Even hours before his arrival there was an unexplained buzz amongst all those who were lucky to be in the vicinity. We all knew ‘The King of Pop’ was coming. As an admirer of his work, I was incredibly excited to be part of ‘HIStory’ and couldn’t wait for his comeback.

Standing within a few feet of Michael, I was able to see, firsthand, the pandemonium that surrounded the singer, wherever he went. The chorus of screams was insatiable and one that did not go unnoticed, with him responding, in his characteristic tone, “I love you, I really do, from the bottom of my heart.”

Despite the world’s fascination with his appearance, up-close, he looked well and, dare I say it, normal.

MICHAEL JACKSON

But what struck me most about Michael was the aura he exuded. His mere presence sent a crowd of even hard-nosed journalists wild, as they hung on his every word. This is something that few entertainers have or ever will have, but I suppose that is what made Mike special; the man’s charisma.

The magnitude of Michael Jackson’s star power is almost impossible to overstate. His influence on music and culture has been immeasurable. During his lifetime he has smashed sales records, pushed creative borders, broken racial boundaries and influenced generations of pop, R&B and hip-hop stars. But there was never a doubt that Michael was going to be a star. When the Jackson 5 exploded onto the music scene in 1969, the world found out what his family had known for a long time- Michael was special.

As a child, the spotlight loved him, and he loved it. Even when sharing the stage with his four talented older brothers- Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Marlon- and recording on a Motown label full of legends, the pocket-sized singer, with the big voice and magnetic smile, stood out. The musician, who was born to perform, had the rare achievement of being a mass cultural phenomenon- twice. First in the late 1960’s, as a cherubic eleven-year old with his brothers in the Jackson 5 and again with the release of his solo recordings.

When the group were put together by their father Joseph they were instant sensations, putting four albums at the top of the pop charts in 1970 alone.

With singles such as ABC and I Want You Back, the Jackson 5 became the darlings of millions, and made genre and chart distinctions irrelevant with their universal appeal. ‘Jacksonmania’ began with bubblegum soul.

Michael would do it again, twelve-years later, with Thriller, which became the biggest-selling studio album in history, and brought sweeping changes to the music industry and redefined the word ‘superstar’.

Even though Michael’s 1979 solo album, Off the Wall, went multiplatinum, that was a mere prologue to the supernova that followed, and its success could not prepare the world for the cultural tsunami that was Thriller.

On stage, Michael brought applauding audiences to their feet with acts of genius that transformed the entertainment world, racking up enough awards to fill a personal Hall of Fame.

One defining moment for the talented showman came on a March evening in 1983, during the Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever television special. After performing a few numbers with his brothers, from his Jackson 5 days, Michael, at the tender age of 24, in two short breaths, black shoes and sequined socks, takes over.

“Yea, those were the good old days…those were magic moments,” he tells the audience, as he pants for air. “But, I especially, like the new songs.”

Suddenly, thunder. The thumping beat of Billie Jean sent fans to their feet screaming. Jackson struck a pose on stage, clasping his black fedora hat and the now infamous white sequined glove. His black jacket and silver vest glittered as white socks peeked from under his black trousers. Then he erupted into a flurry of fluid dance moves as he launched into the song. But it was not until three minutes and forty seconds into the song that Michael introduced his most unforgettable move: the fluid, gliding, seemingly airborne, moonwalk.

Taking four short, sliding steps backward, Michael danced into history- unknowingly changing the world that night. Four steps. That was it. No pyrotechnics, no backup dancers, just a man, one glove and four monumentally memorable steps that seemed to defy the law of gravity. It is no exaggeration to say Jackson’s surreal dance step triggered a lasting transformation of music, dance and pop culture.

Seen by forty-seven million people, the Motown special created even more of a frenzy around the singers 1982 album Thriller, helping him become, arguably, the first African-American artist to truly own the mainstream, turning him into the biggest superstar of his and, perhaps, any generation. It would be his coronation as ‘The King of Pop’.

For nearly four decades, Michael Joseph Jackson brought the world to its feet with his incredible voice, innovative dance routines and catchy pop lyrics. There was no one bigger than Michael and his longevity and record sales speak for themselves. For roughly ten years, starting in 1982, no celebrity could hope to approach Jackson’s level of global fame and influence, nor has any since.

When the world lost Michael, it lost one of its few international superstars. From his work with his brothers, The Jacksons, to his international success with the Billboard-topping Thriller and Bad, to his anticipated 50-date show in London, he was truly at the pinnacle of pop culture.

His extraordinary gifts were shared by all of us as he excited our senses with music and dance, as exemplified in the epic albums Thriller, and Bad and the sounds and beat of Billie Jean. His stage presence was always an extravaganza.

He offered everyone his music and love with a white-gloved hand extended out to all. He contributed his time to so many worthy causes as he truly believed We are the World. But what’s more, Michael loved to create magic, to put something together that was unusual, something so unexpected that it blew peoples’ heads off, something ahead of its time. The moonwalk was just that, sending adrenalized kids scurrying to their kitchens in

Page 43: EyeZine July 2010

white socks, trying to master the move. When Billie Jean aired on MTV in 1983, Jackson became the first African-American artist ever featured on the emerging channel and inspired fans around the globe to copy his rhinestone style.

The glittering white glove became Michael’s singular accessory soon after it made its TV debut on Motown 25. So synonymous was it with Jackson’s image that it morphed into one of his nicknames, ‘The Gloved One’. Like Marilyn Monroe’s white dress or Dorothy’s ruby slippers, the glove ceased to be merely an item of clothing. It was part of a persona.

Lost amidst the eccentricities that increased later in life, many people may have forgotten the huge volume of time and money Michael donated to charity. He was always ready to give back to those who were less fortunate and never forgot his own humble, blue-collar roots. He gave in to the tens of millions of dollars to charities over the years- even including his entire cut from one of his incredibly successful world tours.

Michael Jackson will be remembered as the ‘King of Pop’, as an enigma who may never be completely understood. While his 50 years on this Earth were entirely too short, his light flickered so bright when he lived that it has left an indelible mark on everyone who has ever listened to his music, or been helped by this gentle and sometimes tortured soul.

We now celebrate Michael’s life’s work as we reach out and eternally hold that gloved hand and remember him forever in his music. Perhaps, somewhat fortuitously, Michael knew these would be his last performances.

“These will be my final shows in London. This will be it. When I say this is it, this really will be it. This is my final curtain call!”

Michael Jackson lived the last hours of his life doing what he was born to do. He will always be ‘The King of Pop’.

FOOD & DRINK

PROSECCOCLIFTONIt’s not very often I am lost for words and as a food critique, this would be a great cause for concern. However, every so often, you come across something very special, a gem in the managerie of competitive cuisine, a shining star in the millions of ‘nearly quite theres, but not quite’. When this happens, you find yourself being somewhat smug and think that you have found this special place and you’re not quite sure whether you want to share it with anyone else! But it has been found and share it I must…

Right in the very heart of Clifton Village, sits Prosecco. Unpretentious, modern and chic. We were greeted by Heidi De Rae, the one half of the successful partnership, that is now in its third year. The décor is bright and simplistic with clean lines. The pictures depict Italy and Diego and his family, the other half of Prosecco. Diego is head chef. They both work 6 days a week, a commitment and professionalism which shows.

After a warm welcome, we were seated and given a glass of Prosecco (of course … when in Rome) and shown the menus; 4 courses, 5 if you include the cheeseboard. We plumbed for the homemade chicken liver pate, chutney, ciabatta toast and Mediterranean fish cakes with tomato salsa to start followed by pork belly with 3 salsa accompaniments, verde, apple and chilli and prawns with roasted sauce. This was a taste experience I shall never forget. We were blown away by the sheer brilliance and exquisite flavours. The fishcakes were exactly that, fishcakes, not a breadcrumb in sight. The pork belly was pure bliss and melted in your mouth accompanied by ‘Granny’s homemade chips’, an absolute must have. We had to have one of Prosecco’s delicious deserts which included homemade

Tiramisu and chocolate paradiso, heaven. There is an intelligence and dynamic to Prosecco’s food which is unmatched.

Prosecco are not short on compliments. Heidi and Diego De Rae have got it right. So right that Prosecco boasts an impressive CV including being finalists in Gordon Ramsey’s FWord Local Restaurant Awards 2009/2010. When I asked Heidi about the experience, she told me that Gordon was very personable and as Prosecco were doing everything right, there was no need to feel the infamous wrath of Gordon.

I simply cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough. There is so much more I want to say. If anything? Book it and enjoy!

TRIED & TESTED

FLYING KITESI’m writing this as a complete novice. I’d imagine that most readers would feel the same about flying a Kite. You might have flown the odd Kite as a kid on the beach at Weston’ and perhaps forgotten quite how exhilarating the experience is. The guys at the Bristol Kitestore on Cotham Hill took us to the ‘Downs’ for an afternoon to re-introduce us to the concept of flying a Kite and the varied types available now.

We started off with the rather novel looking Triangulation from HQ-Kites (£29.99). This is an awesome looking Kites with a very unique design by world renowned kite artist, Joel Scholz. This single line Kite is perfect for families and festival goers looking for something to get up into the air easily. Once up, it will stay airborne for a long time without any fuss.

But for some, simply looking pretty isn’t enough. We then unpacked the next Kite known as the Beetle X15 (£34.99). The Beetle is an outstanding small stunt kite that makes an ideal beginners model. Slightly more complicated than the previous Kite in that it has two lines, but it certainly does open up the ability of the Kite allowing multiple turns and twists making the whole experience more enjoyable. It is well behaved, incredibly light and robust and is a delight to fly.

Always looking for the next thing to do we were very excited by the sight of the next Kite. Knowing it was a Power Kite, we were keen to get this one air borne. This particular Kite is known as the Ozone Flow (£149.00 to £229.00). We’ve all seen the Kites like this around while sitting on the ‘Downs’. These are slightly more technical to set-up with four lines and wrist straps. As a beginner it’s worth taking the Bristol Kitestore guys up on a demonstration and set-up of the Kite before attempting this yourself. Once this Kite took to the sky the fun was endless. We were using a 3 meter version and the power it offers can make you jump off your feet. After initial help we were able to get to grips with the Kite bringing a new dimension to your weekend relaxing in the park.
