Congrats to our Lilly Scholarship Winner—Big O!!!

Congrats to Alex Orndorff who won the Lilly Scholarship this month. This is a huge accomplishment! This is a four year scholarship to any university in the state of Indiana provided by Eli Lilly. This scholarship is very prestigious and only given to the best of kids. Great Job Big O and good luck at Ball State next year!

Ray Furney Retiring

At the end of the 2013-2014 school year Mr. Furney will be retiring after 36 years

at LHS.

cals to our athletes at a reduced rate here at GMS. This service is very valuable

and essential to keeping our athletes prepared for the upcoming seasons.

Physical Dates Make up Date

May21st @ DCH

Beacon and DCH will again be holding sports physicals for GMS

and LHS athletes this spring. Physicals will be $20 and $10 will be donated

back to the school with each physical. No athletes will be allowed to prac-

tice or participate in a sport without a physical. There will be a make-up

date on May 21st @ DCH for those who couldn’t attend make the GMS

date.


Farewell Furney

I am choosing to write this story about Mr. Funey instead of inter-

viewing him for many reasons. Mostly because we are limited in the length

of the paper, and we’ve had so much fun over the years that we wanted to

honor him through our own words.

From 1978 to 2014 Tiger athletes have been cared for by one of

the best in the business. Mr. Ray Furney has iced, stretched, taped, and

tended to every athlete that has walked through our doors over the past

36 years. At the end of the 2014 school year Mr. Furney has decided to

finally retire and enjoy time traveling to see his kids, spend time with his wife, and soak in the waters of Hidden Valley

Lake on his pontoon.

For those of you that haven’t had a chance to get to know Mr. Furney or spend some time talking to him, you are

truly missing out. Besides being a great trainer, he is a real character here at the school. He is an encyclopedia of Law-

renceburg knowledge, has an unlimited supply of stories from days in the army or schooling Larry Bird in the ISU rec, and

he is always good for a joke to make you laugh.

In “Furn Dog’s” first year here he was a part of a state championship, with Coach Meador in 1978. In his first four

years with the school, the football team was a combined 46-3. He has been a part of 14 sectional championships, never

lost a semi-state game, and 11 conference championships. He has cared for 184 all conference football players, 13 south

all-stars, an NFL player, numerous college football players, and even an official or two that might of got caught up in the

action. Even though Furney has seen and done more than most can dream of, he always has the heart and compassion to

care for anyone who walks through his doors, no matter the person or the injury.

“Furn Pups” first head coach was the Hall of Famer Dick Meader. After coach Meader “Furn-a-licous” worked with

long-time friend and character himself Glen Crocker. Furney then worked with former LHS player Coach Brookbank, and

most recently Coach Knigga who he also cared for in high school. I can assure you that “Furn diggity dog” keeping players

healthy, has been a huge part of all the success that LHS has enjoyed in his 36 years as a Tiger.

The “King of Tape”, the “Groovy Trainer”, or Mr. Furney, no matter what he is known as to you, he will always be

known and talked about here at LHS. As we usher in a new gymnasium and new trainer, it just won’t be right if there isn’t

some 70’s rock or soul coming out of the new training room.

I’m proud to say Mr. Furney is a good friend, and we look forward to floating with him on the lake at the next

“Floatilla”. (You can retire from work, but not the floatilla) Mr. Furney you will forever be a part of LHS lore, and we would

like you to know your dedication and hard work to the LHS program is truly appreciated more than we can ever express.


Nasty Boys

Parents you may be wondering why your favorite athlete keeps coming home and saying he’s a

“Nasty Boy”. Some may worry or wonder why he would want to be associated or recognized as being a

“Nasty Boy”. The “Nasty Boy” culture is something have openly adopted and encouraged our kids to be a

part of this offseason. So you may ask what is a “Nasty Boy”?

A “Nasty Boy” is modeled after the 90’s wrestling tag team from the WWE. They weren’t the most

polished or gifted wrestlers, but they were a tag team group that never made excuses, were always pre-

pared for what they were handed, always stuck together, and did whatever it took to win no matter who

they were going against.

To us here are just a few of the characteristics of being a “Nasty Boy”:

-Loves working out in our garage Bay 5

-May not always be the most fortunate, but who cares

-Willing to do what others won’t to get the job done

-Always get back up no matter what knocks them down

-Someone willing to lay it on the line for an opportunity to play

-Plays to the end of whistle not the start of it

- Not always the most talented, the biggest, or the fastest

-Puts in time into the weight room, the classroom, and practice

-The only make-up we wear is the occasional bruise or black-eye

- We are from LAWRENCEBURG and darn proud!

So the next time you son says, “coach called me a Nasty Boy today” know that it truly is one of the

highest complements in our program. Not everyone has what it takes to be a “Nasty Boy”. Next year, listen

carefully during warm-ups, big plays, big moments, and when the kick off team runs onto the field, and you

will hear the Nasty Boys anthem playing on the speakers. When you hear that anthem it signals it is time to

Nastysize somebody.

A little about my athletic and football career at LHS:

In Football, lost only one game, by one point to Franklin County my freshman year. Moved to Varsity

my sophomore year, touching the ball for the first time on KOR vs CAPE from downtown Cincinnati,

and immediately got smoked. Won EIAC and Sectional in 1988, losing to eventual State Champ, Roncal-

li on a 90 yd TD in the last few minutes at Roncalli. Lost to eventual State Champ, Tri-West, at Tri-

West , 13-7, in the sectional my Junior year. Was team captain and All-Conference my Senior year. Fin-

ished 7-3, losing to Harrison 7-6, Franklin County and, eventual State Champ, Scecina at Warren Cen-

tral,21-12...after having bus troubles and not kicking off until after 9pm.

Earned my first varsity letter as a Freshman on the Track team. Was on the EIAC Conference Champi-

on 4 x100 relay team in 1989 and 1990, earning All-Conference both times. Our 1990 LHS Track team

won the EIAC championship, I believe the last Tiger track team to do that, as well as every major invi-

tational in Southeast Indiana. Held the 4x100 Relay school record for a couple years. Made Regionals in Track in 1988, 89, 90.

Earned my first basketball letter my sophomore year where my highlight was trying to stop the State's leading scoring from Rising Sun in

the Sectional...we lost. Played for Sectional title my Junior year, lost to SD. Didn't play my senior year....a decision I still regret.

Most memorable moments:

Playing #1 New Pal in The Pit in the mud and a rain storm for the Sectional Title in 1988. They had the top RB in the State and one of the

top QB's in the State, Matt Canada (now OC at NC State). Beat them 20-0... The field wasn't the same for the next few years, but it was

worth it.

Although we lost, playing #1 Tri-West in a snow storm and a foot of snow in the playoffs my Junior year. Had a chance after I picked off a

pass late in the 4th but we couldn't punch it in.

Beating East Central on senior night, 27-6. Crock pulled the starters in the 3rd or it would have been worse, no offense to Mr. Galey

( who played for EC then) but I wish he would have let us run it up and leave no doubt.

Beating Cincinnati Roger Bacon in the Pit my senior year after being down 13-0 at Half. Those boys were running off the field at Half smack

talking to no end. The Tigers dominated in the 2nd, pulling out a 16-13 win.

In my 6 years of football at Greendale and Lawrenceburg, my class never lost to South Dearborn, Batesville, Greensburg, only lost to EC

my junior year.

After high school:

Was recruited and signed on with Georgetown College in Central Kentucky to play Corner-

back. Injured my back during the season and had to have back surgery. Our team ended up win-

ning the 1991 NAIA National Championship. Doctors told me my football playing days should

probably be over so I transferred to Anderson University, ran track for a bit, before transferring

to and graduating from NKU.

I also was given the opportunity by Coach Crocker to come back and coach at LHS in 1994. I

coached every level, from GMS to Varsity during my 13 years at Lawrenceburg. Was a part of

several good teams and a couple Sectional championships. Was honored to coach with the

cream of the crop of LHS coaches during this time:Coach Crock, Coach Bowell, Coach Brook-

bank, Coach Knigga, Coach Bradley....just to name a few...also allowed me to see my mom, Judy

Reese, on a daily basis.

What am I doing now:

I'm currently a Case Manager at Southeast Regional Community Corrections and have been

since 2004. Keep my coaching fire burning by being Defensive Coordinator for my oldest son,

AJ's, Lawrenceburg Tiger pee wee football team (4th grade next year) and my youngest son,

Max's, instructional t-ball team. Aside from that, I enjoy doing mud obstacle races like the Tough

Mudder and Spartan Race, as well as the occasional half marathon. Avid and diehard UC Bearcat

football and basketball fan, have season tickets in both. Favorite thing though is hiking and relax-

ing with my wife, Sherry, my boys and my dogs.

Words of advice/wisdom:

Like I try and drill into my boys heads everyday....Try Hard, never quit and be a leader.

Don't be afraid to fail...life is trial and error

Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard....

Pain fades, Glory last forever and chick dig scars!
