Listen to works by the following composers and compare/contrast them with folk music from their respective countries. You are to relate their music to the music of their countries. We call these composers nationalists for they seek their roots and this is reflected (sometimes obviously and sometimes not so clearly) in their work: Bela Bartok Aaron Copland Heitor Villa-Lobos Joaquin Rodrigo Bedrich Smetana Leos Janacek Frederick Chopin Pjotr Chaikovsky Giuseppe Verdi Leonard Bernstein Carlos Chavez Revueltas Manuel Ponce I will assign up to 10 points per composer work listened and analyzed. Remember that this is a practical paper and not a research paper. I do not want to see a biography on these composers. I want you to analyze what you listened to and how it portrays a sense of national identity after analizing the folk tune.
