The norThernmosT AV ouTposTExton celebrates its 20th year in 2012, having grown from a garage rental operation
to a full AV integrator that is internationally recognised for its outstanding work.
Its dedicated and professional staff comes from a background in television, theatre,
live music and every other aspect of technical production and facilities design.
Equipment sales and integration services include sales of audio, video and lighting
equipment, plus the integration of media systems for theatres, television, conference
halls, meeting rooms and retail locations. Recent installation projects include
Reykjavik’s Harpa Concert and Conference Hall and Musikkens Hus in Aalborg,
Denmark.
Exton’s rental services range from the dry hire of simple systems to full production
packages for concerts, music festivals, corporate events, meetings and inter-
national conferences. The company has worked with an impressive range of global
artists, including Coldplay, Sting, Norah Jones, Robbie Williams, Metallica, Roger
Waters, Björk, Sigur rós, Of Monsters and Men, Duran Duran, Bryan Ferry and
Kraftwerk to name a few.
Over the next two years Exton will seek to grow its international integration business
by building on its expansion into the EMEA market.
This striking addition to the Icelandic and international cultural scene opened its doors in 2011.
The building boasts four halls, ranging in capacity from 200 to 1,800 people, 10 meeting rooms
and various conference areas. Harpa’s façade was designed by renowned artist Olafur Eliasson,
Henning Larsen Architects and Architects Batteríið. Acoustic design was carried out by Artec
Consultants Inc, New York.
Exton won all four of Harpa’s system integration tenders; Sound and Communications, Produc-
tion Lighting, AV Systems and Digital Signage. The company’s technicians pulled over 300km of
sound, light and AV cabling into the building, configured 400 IP addresses and installed 30 high-
end computers to manage over 3,000 control points.

DIm The LIGhTsThe production lighting brief at Harpa offered an exciting challenge,
which Exton answered with trusted products from its premium
manufacturer partners.
ETC controllers and fixtures star in all the major roles. ETC Congo and
Congo jr. controllers amass a total of 11,000 DMX channels to handle
ETC’s 924 Sensor dimmer channels and 248 non-dim channels.
Wireless Focus Remotes and Remote Video Interfaces are fitted in
all four halls, while the Congo Light Server provides backup. House-
lights are controlled via ETC Paradigm architecture processors with
a customised AMX 19-inch touch screen interface.
Over 500 fixtures are available for production in the concert and
conference halls, including ETC Source 4 pars and spots with various
beam angles, ADB Warps and Philips Selecon fresnels. Moving heads
include the amazing Martin Professional TW1 and MAC III Perfor-
mance fixtures, along with ADB Warp Motorised Tungsten and others.
meyer hAs The mIDAs TouchThe main hall is fitted with a Meyer Sound Mica line-array, 600 HP
subs and a number of other speakers that form the left, right and
centre clusters. In total there are 48 speakers in those clusters
weighing in at over 5-tonnes. Drive is courtesy of a Meyer Sound
Galileo loudspeaker management system with three Galileo 616
processors and a Galileo 408 processor.
First choice for the FOH engineer is one of four networked Midas
PRO9 series desks residing onsite, forming part of one of the largest
Midas installations in the world to date. The portable FOH PRO9
carries up to 88 inputs into 32 mix busses, while the control room
PRO9 can record up to 96 channels to the Klark Teknik DN9696
multi-track recorder.
Meyer Sound reinforcement and portable systems complete the
picture for the other halls. These include Meyer Sound Melodie
line-arrays, UPA-1P, CQ-1 and various other speakers. For control
and monitors outside the main hall there is a selection of Allen &
Heath’s iLive series.

analogue and digital signals from practically any point in the building to Barco’s Presentation Switchers and
on to the projectors. Each of the conference and concert halls are equipped with Barco 20K Lumen or 8K
Lumen projectors, while smaller meeting rooms are furnished with Hitachi projectors. All devices are fully
capable of transporting or displaying 1920 x 1200 resolution images onto the building’s 250 sq metres of
projection screens. The AV systems are controllable from 19-inch AMX touch screens or by tablets over a
WiFi network.
A Triax and HD-SDI infrastructure also allows for easy access for broadcast purposes.
off The wALL ImpressIonsThroughout the building you will notice about 40 digital
signage screens. The system uses AMX Inspired Xpress
player and a customised media management system to
display information about each day’s schedule, meeting
room occupants and advertising for current and future
events.
“Harpa is an extraordinary affair. Its timeline, its look and feel,
the level of expertise invested in it and the entertainment
technology story combine to form a remarkable tale. Unusu-
ally great, in fact. For the different parties involved, it will
undoubtedly mean different things, but it’s fair to presume
that each will be a proud associate. For Exton, it means a great
deal.” – mondo*dr magazine
