The International Union for Conservation of Nature

(IUCN) is a United Nations-recognized organization that

maintains the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, an attempt to

chronicle the plight of endangered species around the world. The

list gets updated at least once annually. As of 2010, the IUCN had

    evaluated 52,017 species.

    Red List

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (also known as the

IUCN Red List or Red Data List), founded in 1963, is the world's

most comprehensive inventory of the global conservation status

of biological species. The International Union for Conservation of

Nature (IUCN) is the world's main authority on the conservation

status of species. A series of Regional Red Lists are produced bycountries or organizations, which assess the risk of extinction to

species within a political management unit.

    1. Extinct Species

    15/17

Extinct animals are those species which are nolonger living. This group includes prehistoric animals

like dinosaurs and ice-age mammals, as well asmodern species like the Dodo.Extinction is a naturalprocess but humans are causing more extinction atan increasing rate, far more than is natural.

    2. An endangered species is a species of organisms facing

a very high risk of extinction. Once they become extinct, they will never be seen on Earth again. .It has been

estimated that over 40% of all living species on Earth are

at risk of going extinct DUE TO THE FOLLOWING

    REASONS.

The natural habitats are snatched away from these

species, leaving them only a small portion of theland.

    Hunting and trading &

    Pollution is another huge factor.

    3. Vulnerable species is a species of animals or plants

which are likely to become endangered unless somethingchanges. Something has to be done to remove the things

that are harmful to their survival, and their rate of

reproduction needs to increase. There are 8,565 species

listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

    16/17

Vulnerability is mainly caused by habitat loss or

destruction. The populations of which are wholly or partially

    diminishing owing to overdevelopment, wide-scale destruction of the habitat, or otherdisturbances of the environment ;

    The populations of which have been seriouslyreduced or the safety of which is not yet assured ;

The populations of which remain abundant but the

existence of which in the entire distribution areais under threat owing to serious detrimentalfactors

    .

    4. Threatened species : is a species of plant or animal that is

not currently endangered, but may become so if its population

continues to decrease. In most cases it is human action which

has caused the population to decrease so we must be reallycareful to change what we do that impacts upon the species or

    their habitat.

If we fail to protect a threatened species, they may become a

    endangered species.

Rare species is a group of organisms that are very uncommon

or scarce. This designation may be applied to either a plant oranimal.Reasons why species become rare

    Habitat loss and degradation
