Fostering Collaboration

Hosted Bioinformatics BoF session at NISBRE 2008 NE-sponsored Core Facility Collaboration

meeting hosted during same conference Post-meeting:

Tried to get NCRR support for bioinformatics core collaboration, but unsuccessful in even getting list of bioinformatics core directors

NCRR people suggested we work with Core Facility folks

Birth of NICL

Network of IDeA Funded Core Laboratories founded NICLweb.org

Core Facility Database Initial organizational meeting held at the

2009 Annual Meeting of the Association of Biomolecular Resource Core Facilities (ABRF) meeting in Memphis in February

Positive feedback from NCRR folks Not much follow-through… But another organizational “track”

planned for NISBRE 2010 April 19, 2010

Recent Developments

New core facilities collaborations popping up: NICL, in part, an outgrowth of Northeast

Regional Life Sciences Core Directors Midwest Association of Core Directors

(wwwMWACD.org) organized at ABRF 2010 Prior to NM Bioinformatics Summit, a “western

states” INBRE/COBRE bioinformatics cores meeting

All planning or have some kind of registry Potential for significant overlap and most will

not support a full feature setApril 19, 2010

Why ABRF?

National (international) organization Good financial base Mission to foster collaboration

among cores “Neutral” about technologies,

funding sources, geography, etc. Good standing with NSF/NIH

Potential funding opportunities

ABRF Proposal

Develop organizational structure to support “affiliates” and “chapters” For quick start-ups around “hot” interests ABRF support for meetings, listservs, etc., with few requirements

Support the creation of a super-registry Core Facilities Regional Groups Societies Individuals Graduate Programs

Approved by the ABRF Executive Board on Thursday Asked to be Chair of Affiliates Committee; call this Friday Working with current ABRF President, ABRF President-Elect, and

FASEB President Also asked to chair a session at ABRF 2011 on Bringing Special

Interest Groups Together
