Parts of the Heart (1)Something you must know first: arteries

carry (oxygenated) blood from the heart to the body and veins carry (deoxygenated) blood from the body back to the heart.

A Human heart has a left half and a right half. Each half has a Ventricle and an Atrium. The Ventricles are large chambers that make up most of the heart. They are separated by the Interventricular Septum. The Atriums are smaller chambers “on top” of their corresponding Ventricle.

Page 9: Extension group “This mission is possible” By Wouter van Zeist, Simeon Ensing, Tiana Birnie-Selwyn, Eden Poihipi and Simone Wanakore.

Parts of the Heart (2)The Atriums and Ventricles are connected by

valves (which are quite similar to doors or gates). The Right Ventricle and Atrium are connected by the Tricuspid Valve (which has three “cusps”, hence the name), and the Bicuspid/Mitral Valve (which has two cusps) connects the Left Atrium and Ventricle.

Parts of the Heart (3)Each Ventricle also has another valve. The Pulmonary

Valve (which has three cusps/leaflets) links the Right Ventricle to the Pulmonary Trunk. The Aortic Valve (which has three cusps) links the Left Ventricle to the Aorta, the largest artery in the body, whose branches distribute blood through all of the body.

The Right Atrium receives blood from two veins called the Superior Vena Cava (coming from above) and the Inferior Vena Cava (coming from below). All the veins in the body (except the ones taking blood from the lungs back to the heart) merge into one of these two.

Parts of the Heart Quiz-QuestionsThis is the basic anatomy of the Human Heart. It

doesn’t include everything. Here’s a quiz for you.1. Veins carry blood from the heart to the body. True

or false?2. How many cusps does the Aortic Valve have?3. Which Ventricle does the Pulmonary Valve link the

Pulmonary Trunk to?4. Is the Aorta an artery or a vein?5. What is the largest artery in the body?

Do this individually.

Page 15: Extension group “This mission is possible” By Wouter van Zeist, Simeon Ensing, Tiana Birnie-Selwyn, Eden Poihipi and Simone Wanakore.

Parts of the Heart Quiz-Answers1. False. Veins carry blood from the body

back to the heart.2. The Aortic Valve has three cusps (it is

tricuspid).3. The Pulmonary Valve links the Pulmonary

Trunk to the Right Ventricle.4. The Aorta is an artery.5. The largest artery in the body is the Aorta.

How much did you get correct?

Basic KnowledgeA heartbeat is when

the heart pumps blood in the body and receives new blood. Usually, Humans have 70-120 (A, B) heartbeats a minute, and when stressed it can go up to 240 BPM (C). When a Human is dead, it is 0 BPM (D). A-n

Effects of ActivitiesActivities you do affect

your heartbeat rate. For example, when you exercise your heartbeat goes up (A), and when you relax/sleep it goes down (B). Three theoretic examples are shown for each state, including a “middle” state (C), possibly someone concentrating on something non-physical.

Heart Attacks and PacemakersWhen a heart stops, e.g.

during a heart attack, the Human whose body it is in is likely to die. The beating of a heart is controlled by the brain and a special nerve centre that acts like a “built-in pacemaker”. If that nerve centre doesn’t work properly, the Human whose body it is in needs a pacemaker.

“Good” “Bad”

Papillary MusclesMuscles called the papillary muscles contract

chambers of the heart at exactly the right time, pushing blood into the body and new blood into itself, creating heartbeat. These muscles could fail in a heart attack.

Some foods very high in caffeine and sugar could cause heart attacks.

Chicken, fish, Eggs and Meat have protein in them.

5+ a day keeps the colour away.

Food that come from cows are all dairy products.

Food that have a lot of wheat in them have a lot of fibre.

Lollies and junk food are treats and should only be eating once a week .

Milk and water are the best drinks you could ever drink because they are healthier than fizzy and lolly drinks.
