THE South African soccer fraternity wasleft dumbfounded when they heard aboutthe untimely death of Senzo Meyiwa.Meyiwa (27), the Bafana Bafana and
Orlando Pirates goalminder, was fatallyshot when two thugs entered Kelly Khu-malo’s house in Vosloorus, East Rand, onSunday night. It is reported that the two robbers
demanded cellphones, money and valuablesbefore Meyiwa was shot in the back, tryingto protect Khumalo – because one of themen allegedly had a gun pointed at her.A third man waited outside the house and
all three fled immediately after the shoot-ing.“This is a sad loss whichever way you
look at it – to Senzo’s family, to his extend-ed family, to Orlando Pirates and to thenation,” Dr Irvin Khoza, Orlando Pirateschairman, commented.Dr Danny Jordaan, Safa president,
meanwhile, said he was shocked anddevastated by the tragic death of Meyiwa.“He was an integral part of the revolutionof our beloved national team under ShakesMashaba. For him to leave us like this isshocking.“As an association we had expected so
much from him, the nation had pinnedtheir hopes on him following brilliantdisplays in the Bafana Bafana jersey, moreso in the recent Afcon matches where hekept a clean sheet in all four games. We willsurely miss him,” Jordaan said.“At this time our thoughts are with his
family, his club Orlando Pirates, the footballfamily in general. Shakes Mashaba wasgoing to announce his squad to face Sudanand Nigeria tomorrow, and I would like tobelieve Senzo’s name would have been thefirst, because he has been a pillar ofstrength Bafana Bafana in the recentmatches, making incredible saves to keepthe team in the match. May his soul rest inpeace,” Jordaan added.Meyiwa was born in Umlazi outside
Durban. He joined Orlando Pirates in 2002,but only made his professional debut in2005.At the time of his untimely death, he had
represented the Sea Robbers 73 times. Heplayed his last match for the Soweto giantswhen his club defeated Ajax Cape Town 4-1in the Telkom Knockout on Saturday, just aday before he was killed.Meyiwa was nearing the peak of his
career and he had recently captained
Bafana in all four of their 2015 African Cupof Nations qualification fixtures. He did notconcede a goal during those matches.Meyiwa, who was born in KwaZulu-Natal
was never far from the headlines – for thewrong reasons. Tales of abondoning hiswife, Mandisa, to go and stay with Khumalodid the rounds with some going as far asdescribing Khumalo as a “homewrecker”,but the shot-stopper later went back to his
wife who forgave him for having an affairwith the Afro-pop singer.Khumalo has a child with Meyiwa, and
she also shares a child with hip-hop singerMolemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye. Maarohan-ye was found guilty of murder for killingfour schoolboys while dragracing down aSoweto street while high on drugs. This was later converted to culpable
homicide.

IT is a yes to the expansion of the GoegapNature Reserve with an additional 4 900 haand the establishment of a new provincialnature reserve at Gamsberg at 12 500 ha inSpringbok. The expansion of the Goegap Nature
Reserve and the establishment of the newprovincial nature reserve at Gamsberg isexpected to most certainly create a coupleof jobs in the province. That is after the Northern Cape MEC
for Environment and Nature Conser-vation, Tiny Chotelo, sealed the first
biodiversity offset agreements betweenKoeris Wind and Mainstream Kangnasas well as Black Mountain Mine (BMM)and the Northern Cape Department ofEnvironment and Nature Conservationto ensure the protection of biodiversitysites.Signing the agreements in Springbok last
week, Chotelo explained that the purposeof a biodiversity offset was to ensure anequivalent or better biodiversity outcometo the sites where biodiversity valuesmight be lost due to impacts that might becaused by developmental projects, toimprove the long-term protection and
viability of the biodiversity and itsassociated habitats, and to ensure thatthe developed site was ecologically sustain-able.Expressing her pride in signing this
first agreement for the province, theMEC elaborated that offsets were in-creasingly being used as a tool toensure that development was eco-logically sustainable and the negativeimpacts were avoided, minimised orremedied.“This is mainly due to the growing
concerns about loss of biodiversity acrossthe country and in particular our prov-ince.“We are therefore compelled to introduce
urgent mechanisms to safeguard species, ecosystems and landscapes.“A consistent approach to, and
clarity on how to make use of, bio-diversity offsets is therefore requiredto avoid the risk of inappropriate bio-diversity offsets or no offsets being usedat all.“It gives me great pleasure that these
offsets we have signed are indeed veryappropriate for this area.“I am also happy that these agreements,
have corrected the myth that conservationis opposed to development and job crea-
tion,” added Chotelo. The MEC maintains that it is the
role of her department to facilitateand coordinate the biodiversity offsetprocesses within the sustainabilitycontext as well as advancing theconstitutional mandate of the depart-ment in line with the Provincial Growthand Development Strategy of having6,5% of all provincial land conservedand protected. She said that the finalisation of the
biodiversity offsets between the stake-holders promised not only to ensurebiodiversity protection, but also togrow the current percentage of theconservation estate from 4,58% to6,5%.According to the MEC, both the
Goegap and Gamsberg reserves willcontribute to the increase in per-centage on the current conservationestate in line with the Provincial Growthand Development Strategy of having6,5% of all provincial land under con-servation.“Of course the journey to marry
the interests of environment, heritageand development was not necessarilysmooth, but had to be travelled,” empha-sised Chotelo in conclusion.
New game reserve to create jobsA FIRST for the province, biodiversity offset agreements for the Northern Cape, were signed by Hendrik Reyneke, CEO: Mainstream Kangnas, Denver van Heerden, head of theEnvironment and Nature Conservation Department, and André Trytman, the general manager: Black Mountain Mine. ACRES and acres of land lying barren indifferent schoolyards, churches and manyinstitutions in Kimberley have become anobject of envy to two Zimbabwean brothersnow based in Kimberley.
One of the brothers, Donald Mukobvu, is aholticulturalist and to him it is bad to haveland and not use it productively with hisbrother Themba Njopera.
Hence the two brothers approached themanagement at the Galeshewe-based StBoniface School to use the unused land justbehind the school. The result turned out tobe a head-turner to motorists and householdsin the neighbourhood.
Incidentally, this month the Department ofAgriculture, Land Reform and Rural Devel-opment in the Northern Cape has markedWorld Food Day in Kuruman in pursuit ofthe same idea that the brothers are pursuingin Kimberley.
“To us Kimberley is still full of diamondsand those diamonds are the available land atschools and churches that is standingunused. If all communities in the schools andneighbourhoods would be allowed to plantvegetables and sell them the chances are thatthe vegetables would be cheap and fresh,”says Donald.
The brothers say at the beginning theydreamt that by now their project would haveexpanded to other areas, but due to unfore-seen circumstances they still find themselvesglued to the St Boniface garden as theyattempt to fashion out efficient ways toremove weeds and cobwebs. According to thebrothers, the garden has attracted theinterest of unemployed youth, churches andgovernment officials.

THE exuberance that wasevident in the property marketa year ago is coming to an end,and home sellers in most partsof South Africa now need tomoderate their price expecta-tions accordingly.
“Sellers need to calm downand price their properties fairlyin order to achieve a sale, bearing in mind that furtherinterest rate rises are anticipat-ed.”
That’s the advice of LewGeffen, chairman of Sotheby’sInternational Realty in SouthAfrica, who says althoughsummer is here and the primehome-buying season is pickingup momentum, the heat hasgone out of the market in thepast few months and the rate ofprice growth is slowing down.
“Since 2012, when the marketreally began to turn after the2008 and 2009 recession, we haveseen the average home saleprice in our group rise byaround 26%, and at this level weare seeing indications of buyerresistance in most of thecountry except Cape Townwhere demand is still veryhigh.”
Geffen says he is aware thathis point of view may be at oddswith what some other high-pro-file commentators may be sayingabout the state of the real estatemarket, but the fact is that therehas been a weakening ofconsumer sentiment this year.
“And at the same time thebanks are still extremely
conservative when valuingproperties for home loanpurposes.
“In short, we are back in anormal market that is in theprocess of balancing itself, andthis will soon be the case inCape Town too. ”
Geffen says, however, thatprospective buyers should not besitting on the fence at this stageand waiting for prices to godown.
“I want to be clear: Homeprices are now back where theywere before the ‘bust’ of 2008,and are set to keep rising, although possibly more slowlyfor the next couple of years.”

KAIZER MOTAUNG, chairman of KaizerChiefs, has expressed his delight with theprogress made by his club this season.
Amakhosi have moved into the top six ofthe Africa Football/Soccer Clubs rankingsafter having accumulated 1 561 pointsduring the current cycle.
The recent rankings were released on 19October.
The Soweto giants are the only team inthe country who occupy a spot in the topten, followed by Mamelodi Sundowns whoare placed 12th having accumulated 1 511points.
“It is encouraging to see a footballdatabase tracking and documenting theperformances of clubs on the Africancontinent,” Motaung told kaizerchiefs.com.
“So going forward one can compare ourstandard with other countries as well. Theranking also shows the great start ourclub had to the start of the PSL season,”said the chairman.
Chiefs have had a great start to thecurrent PSL season. They are currentlysitting at the top of the log after collecting25 points in nine matches and they remainthe only team in the league that is yet tolose a match this season.
“Looking back, the start to this seasonreminds me of 1984 when Kaizer Chiefsalso had a fantastic season, winning fourtitles, including the league.
“However, that was back in the days ofthe NPSL. In that season Joe Frickleton, aScotsman, was our coach.
“An interesting coincidence is that ourpresent coach, Stuart Baxter, is also aScotsman,” he added.
However, Motaung has warned hisplayers not to get carried away by theircurrent league standing.
“It is still early days.“A season is not a sprint, it is a mara-
thon.” he warned.Orlando Pirates, who had won the
CAF Champions League in 1995 andwere the runners-up in the AfricanChampions League last season, occupythe 20th spot on the continent with 1 472points.
In the top 100 bracket there are otherlocal teams such as Bidvest Wits (38th,
1 419 points), SuperSport United (49th,1 402 points), Bloemfontein Celtic (55th,1 397 points) and Ajax Cape Town (95th,1 353 points).
TP Mazembe of Congo DRC are Africa’sbest team as they are ranked first on thecontinent with 1 609 points.
