Expressive TherapyThe Expressive Therapy Department at Camelot is designed to help students with social emotional development. The department includes art, music, play, and dance movement therapies.

Our expressive therapy services are available to students on a referral basis. Students are assessed and then placed in treatment with individualized goals. Expressive therapists at each campus collaborate with each student’s team to provide holistic treatment.

Art TherapyArt therapy is an evidence based application of the visual arts and the creative process within a therapeutic relationship to support, maintain, and improve the psychosocial, physical, cognitive, and spiritual health.

Art therapy combines visual, verbal, and sensory approaches with counseling to help students meet their goals and objectives for development. It is a positive complement for counseling, social work, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.

Through the art therapy process, students have the opportunity to develop both socially and emotionally from their licensed art therapist.

During art therapy sessions students are free to express their thoughts, feelings, and perceptions. Students are encouraged to use art therapy to process their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.

Music TherapyMusic Therapy is an evidence-based use of music interventions and music-centered approaches to help students accomplish their individual progress goals. The fundamental elements of music and the relationships that develop through them help improve student engagement in meaningful play, sustain focus, initiate interactions, collabo-rate, develop ownership, and lead others.

Students who are referred to music therapy services work together with the music therapist to uncover unique impulses toward connection in music in order to develop social and emotional resources. Students build and strengthen relationships to self, peers, and their community through creating, sharing, and listening to music with guidance from the music therapist.

Play TherapyPlay therapy is designed to build and enhance attachment, self-esteem, and trust in self and others. The four main areas essential to play therapy interactions are structure, engagement, nurture, and challenge. The therapist guides the student through playful games and developmentally challenging activities to create an active and emotional connection to adjust behavior and encourage communication and positive relationships.

Dance Movement TherapyDance Movement Therapy is a form of expressive therapy that takes place in a therapeutic environment with a therapist who uses expressive elements of dance and movement as an approach to assessment and intervention. The goal of dance movement therapy is to develop the student’s motor skills and physical release. Each session is customized to fit the unique needs of each student. The dance movement therapist uses evidenced based approaches to allow students to explore the connection between mind and body. This therapeutic relationship is a carefully designed process to help channel the student’s communication pattern into “dances of relationships”.

Our CommitmentsCamelot’s Expressive Therapy department is passionate about the ways that expressive modalities can unify school communities and strengthen the culture of our staff and students alike. For this reason, our department provides regular trainings and workshops on developing resources for working with students, and host events to bring the communities we serve together.
