Theola was the “queen of decorating.” Every

holiday was a holiday for her to celebrate and wear

festive attire. She had a vast collection of African

American figurines throughout her home. She

understood the power in seeing yourself in every

artistic expression. Her home was always open for

feeding family, friends, and anyone who wanted a

meal. Theola was a no-non-sense person and she

didn’t mind speaking the truth; however, most know

her to be a comedian in her own way. She brought

humor to her home and everywhere she traveled.

Theola will be truly missed by her children:

Theodora Watson (Cassie), Ponce DeLeon Jones,

Tonette Baldwin, and Shareen Roper; her grandchil-

dren: Cyrus Jones (Tonia-Gicelle) of Charlotte, Ieasha

Jones, Tyra Johnson (LaVar), Ambrosia Jones, Jordan

Jones both of Colorado Springs, Verney Jones of

Columbia and Kim Meyers (Keith) of Oregon; her ten

great-grandchildren; her sister, Irma Owens (Herbie) of

New York; her uncle, Ernest Frazier (Elizabeth); her

special cousin, Bretha Ferguson (St. Julian) of Chicago;

her special nephew, Walter “Big Mitch” Mitchell

(Rosetta); her stepdaughters: Lorraine Backman,

Vondaline Robinson, and Priscilla Green; her friend

and earth angel of over 70 years, Azalee Washington;

her special nieces and nephews: Stephanie Blake

(Isaiah), Nancy Barron, Wanda Johnson of New York,

Joey Oden (Barbara) of Long Island, Herbie Owens of

New York, and Deborah Parker (Dennis) of New

Jersey; along with a number of grandnieces,

grandnephews, extended family, friends, church

family, neighbors, and coworkers.

Theola is in heaven rejoicing with her

grandmother, mother, father, husband, son, six

siblings, family and friends, “Back It Up!”

A loved one has departed from this earth for another land. A

city which hath foundation, whose builder and maker is God.

(Hebrews 11:10) Mrs. Theola Williams Jones, the

daughter of the late Joseph Williams and Anna Bell

Williams, was born on Friday, January 8, 1937 in

Charleston, South Carolina.

Theola attended Immaculate Conception and

later graduated with her high school diploma from

Cornerstone Christians Correspondence School in

2008. She joined Morris Street Baptist Church and was

baptized under the pastorate of the late Reverend J.C.

Dunbar. She sang on the Hour of Power Choir,

worked with children during the annual Vacation Bible

School, served as the sexton for many years, served on

the kitchen committee and was a faithful member of

her church.

Theola was joined in marriage to the late Mr.

Phillip Jones who preceded her in death. To this union

three children were born, one daughter, Theodora

Watson, and two sons, Ponce DeLeon Jones and Ira P.

Jones, who preceded her in death.

Theola was the first African American

Environmental Service Supervisor at Roper Hospital, a

position she held for over 28 years. She loved cooking,

shopping, spending time with family, caring and

helping people.

Theola was known by many names, to some

she was “2,” “Sweets,” “Jones,” “Thelema,” “GiGi,”

and “Back It Up.” She was loved by family and

friends, which made her the mother to many from

Jackson Street, Calhoun Street (The Borough),

Darlington Avenue, Maverick Street and King Street.

She was a loving and over protective, yet dedicated

mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great

grandmother.
