“THE SCREAM” –MUNCH: WHAT LINES DO YOU SEE IN THIS

PAINTING?

EXPLAINING THE SCREAM• In 1883, a painter, Edward Munch, was walking with two friends

across a bridge in Germany. They stopped for a minute to admire the landscape, which was lush and green and lit under a waning sun.

• Eventually, the sunset turned bright red, Munch recalled, and he felt a "scream" go through nature. This was the inspiration for Munch's famous portrait, "The Scream."

• In that painting, red-hued colors swirl around a screaming man as two other men walk onward in the background.

• "The Scream" is one of the most famous expressionist paintings and can be used when explaining Expressionism.

EXPRESSIONISM• Expressionism time period: Beginning of the 20th century• In Expressionist Art, the artist tries to express certain feelings about

some thing.• The artists that painted in this style were more concerned with

having their paintings express a feeling than in making the painting look exactly like what they were painting.

• Artists felt estranged from their society. • For example, many Expressionists were located in 19th-cenutry

Germany. The German society was changing and modernizing and not in all good ways. Expressionists set out to show what they thought the world was like, not the literal picture they saw around them.

Project

1. Get a ruler, a worksheet from Ms. Mullen, and two different colored crayons/colored pencil.

2. Draw lines until every part of the paper is covered. (The lines you draw can only be parallel or perpendicular to each other!)

3. Color in the all the lines every other color!4. Write your name on the back!
