Transcript of Expressing Views & Opinions
I think you should write it down.
Fact = a truth or reality
Opinion = a feeling or
belief, which cannot be
proved to the satisfaction of
all
Facts Opinions-Proved by
experimentation or
observation-Can be verified by referring to
an authoritative source
-Offer strong support for
something that is stated
-Cannot be proved to the satisfaction of
all -Represent personal
interpretation -May not provide
adequate support for an
idea
The following are some of the
commonly used expressions for stating facts:
Show / indicate / state / found
1. The head-on collision of two passenger ferries resulted in the death of a three-year-old boy and injuries to over 30 people.
2. The crew of both vessels was not very helpful.
3. The Ministry of Transport must take a serious look at this latest ferry collision.
4. We can avoid all these tragedies if all Malaysian succeed in making safety a culture and a way of life.
I think it’s going to rain.
The way I see it,
I think it’s going to rain this evening because the sky is cloudy and it
I think scuba diving is a more thrilling sport
than surfing because to be deep under the sea
is definitely more exciting than to be on
the sea surface.

Which is a more thrilling sport?

I feel that scuba diving is more dangerous because the risk of getting suffocated and
drowned while carrying the big heavy oxygen tank when
doing the sport is very high.
In my opinion, skiing is more exciting because there are
more unpredictable obstacles that one has to face when skiing down mountains
compared to surfing along the waves.
Expressing AGREEMENT: Reinforcing someone else’s
ideas
"Right." "I think so.""That’s true. . ." "You’re right about that.""Exactly." "Yeah. That’s what I was thinking.""I agree with (that) what you said."
Expressing DISAGREEMENT: softly and politely
"Well, I don’t necessarily agree with that. . .""Hmmm. I see it somewhat differently. . .""Your view is a bit different than mine. . ."
You can also use a "Yes, but. . ." format. You are not
stating disagreement, but you are able to state your own,
different view.
"Yes, but I think. . .""Yeah, that may be true, but. . .""Well, I feel that. . ."
Work in groups of three. Exchange opinions on the given topic. Follow the instructions in

In my opinion teenagers, are
given too much freedom
nowadays. That’s true.. you’re right about that. Too
much freedom creates trouble.
Well, I don’t necessarily agree with that because they are
watched by their parents at home and teachers at school.
Your view is a bit different from mine. There are also other factors that cause social problems among
teenagers. Those who are not given enough freedom may also retaliate and create problems. Exactly. Teenagers who are
neglected by parents tend to get involved in social problems because
they have too much freedom.
Yes, but most parents are very busy that they spend less time with
their children.

Thus As a conclusion
In brief To summarize
Work in pairs Student A starts by making a conclusion.
“In brief, school children should be given more homework.”
Student B says, “So what?” Student A ponders the question and
answers it.“Homework gives them more practice and
helps them to brush up their knowledge.”
Student B says, “Why should anybody care?”
Student A answers the question by providing a more convincing answer to summarize the conversation.“If they are not given a lot of homework
especially during school holidays, they would have more free time. Most of them wouldn’t have anything beneficial to do that they might probably end up with involving in social problems.”
