A Few Words From the Administration

Happy Fall to all Cristo Rey Families! It’s hard to believe, but we are over a month into the 2019-20 school year at this point. Sunday, September 29th is our first Report Card Day. This is a great opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with his/her teachers. Freshman families are asked to come at 12:00pm, Sophomore families at 1:00pm, and Junior/Senior families at 3:00pm. Please see the website for more information. Our Homecoming Spirit Week will begin Monday, October 7th. Students will be receiving more information about this fun and ex-citing week at Cristo Rey, which culminates with our Homecoming match against Benito Juarez High School on Friday, October 11th. The Homecoming Dance will be that same evening here at Cristo Rey, from 7:30pm – 10:30pm. As students receive their first set of grades, it is a good time to check in with your son or daughter with regards to how they are using their time. Each day, students at Cristo Rey have a period called Magis in which they can choose how they want to spend their time. Making productive use of both the Magis period and the Homework Center after school can really make a positive difference in a student’s academic performance. Please encourage your child to make sure they are using their time well and ask-ing for the available support at Cristo Rey. With student progress, please remember that not only can students view their grades online, parents have access as well.  If you would like to receive this service, please bring your valid email address to Report Card Day and Mr. Walke or Mr. Durk can help you set up your account. They will both be available in the gym.   In the coming months, all students will be involved in standardized testing. Please see more information from College Counseling about tips for success in preparing for these assessments. Finally, our Dean of Students Ms. Gradilla will speak to Freshman parents on Report Card Day about student wellness. She will be joined by one our counselors. High schools across the country are seeing more and more instances of vaping within their commu-nities. We highly recommend that you speak with your son or daughter about the dangers involved with vaping, as only now is the public beginning to find out more about how damaging using these products can be. Notes from the Dean’s Office There will be three dances this year that students of all grade levels may attend. School dances are organized by Student Council to create opportunities for students to interact and socialize afterschool. The dates of those dances are Friday, October 11th, Satur-day, February 1st, and Friday, April 24th. The homecoming dance in October will begin at 7:30pm and will end at 10:30pm. The doors will close at 8:30pm and no student will be allowed to enter the dance after that time unless they have received permission prior to the dance from the Dean of Students, Mrs. Gradilla. Also, students may not leave the dance before 10:00pm. Please make sure that your child makes the necessary arrangements to get home after the dance so that students are not waiting past 10:30pm to be picked up. The Cristo Rey student code of conduct expectations apply to all school dances. Also, this month from Tuesday, October 7th through Friday, October 11th we will celebrate Spirit Week. During this week, students will be allowed to dress down based on the selected daily themes. If they choose not to dress down in the theme for the day, they may wear jeans and a Cristo Rey shirt any day or the regular school dress code. Jeans may not be baggy or ripped. The daily themes will be announced by Student Council.

Students are allowed to participate in Spirit Week except on their CWSP workday. Information and expectations about these days also will be sent to students through their school email accounts. Participation in the Spirit Week days is not mandatory.

Homecoming 2019 On Friday, October 11th, Cristo Rey athletics and student council will host the Homecoming Soccer Game and Dance Party. Stu-dents are invited to enjoy spirited pre-game fun on the plaza, a varsity soccer game at Harrison Park against rival Benito Juarez and a dance party in the Cristo Rey gym. The ticket price for Homecoming is $10 for students and includes food before the varsity soccer game and admission to the dance. Tickets must be purchased during school Oct 7th-11th in order to get food before the game. Other snacks will be available for pur-chase during the dance. Students will be required to leave bags and coats at coach check, available for $.50 at the dance entrance. The dance will be held from 7:30pm- 10:30pm. Dress is casual, and we encourage students to wear Cristo Rey spirit gear. No cropped tops, baggy jeans/ripped jeans, sandals or hats will be allowed at the dance. Shirts must have sleeves. There will be CR faculty and staff as well as CPD officers supervising the students in the plaza, at the game and during the dance. Tuition Office Dear Parents, Beginning next week we will have a box available in the front lobby so that you may drop off your tuition payment. Please leave your payment in envelopes that have been sent home or a regular envelope with the student’s name. You’ll be able to leave payments with check or money order, but NO CASH will be accepted. If you have any questions, please call Reina Andrade at 773-890-6890.

College Counseling Office Attention Parents of Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors

Attention parent(s) of seniors Do you need help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), for your son or daughter? Cristo Rey Jesuit High School will host a FAFSA completion workshop Monday, October 7th, 2019. By filing-out the FAFSA, students will be eligible to receive thousands of dollars for college. College Counselors and staff from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) will be available to help you complete this very important application. To complete the on-line application, please bring your 2017 tax forms and W2s. Please check in the cafeteria at your scheduled time by (your son or daughter’s work day). Your son or daughter should accompany you that morning. Students who work on Friday should report to the cafeteria lobby at 5:30 p.m. Students who work on Thursday should report to cafeteria lobby at 6:30 p.m. As part of the College Application process, seniors are scheduled to take the ACT (College Admission Exam) on Saturday, October 26, 2019, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Students should bring that morning their admission ticket, two #2 pencils, school ID and a calculator. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs. Palafox, Director of College Counseling at 773-890-6839. Summer Enrichment Programs are an essential part of a high school experience. If your son or daughter will like to have an oppor-tunity to stay on a college campus for a summer or partake in a learning opportunity, please have then reach out to Ms. Delgado. Junior students who have already participated in a Summer Enrichment Program can apply for an International Summer Enrich-ment Program. PSAT/NMSQT Exam Test Date for Sophomores and Juniors The sophomore and the junior class will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on Saturday, October 19th from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. This is a national standardized exam that students are required to take to help them prepare for the SAT. If there are any questions, please feel free to contact the college counseling department. College Fair We will be hosting our 17th Annual College Fair on October 2, 2019. Our students will have the opportunity to speak to 60+ college admissions representatives as well as community based organizations. Please encourage your son/daughter to ask questions to the

Admissions Office Although the school year has just begun, we are already recruiting new students for the 2020-2021 school year. The first Admis-sions Information Session will be Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 6 p.m. Please invite any friends or relatives with students that are in eighth grade. Parents, Cristo Rey is always supporting our Latin cultural traditions and every year we have the privilege of being able to build an offering for the deceased and we want it to be communal. We would like to invite you to participate by sending a photo of your deceased loved one that you would like to be remembered at our altar. The photo should be of postal size with your son/daughter’s name and asesor on the back. This will help us to return the photo once the celebration has passed. If you would like to participate please have your son/daughter turn in their photo to his/her asesor from October 1 - 23. ¡Feliz otoño a todas las familias de Cristo Rey! Es difícil de creer, pero en este momento estamos a más de un mes en el año escolar 2019-20. El domingo 29 de septiembre es nuestro primer día de calificaciones. Esta es una gran oportunidad para discutir el progreso de su hijo con sus maestros. Se les pide a las familias acudir en el siguiente horario primer año a las 12:00 p.m., segundo año a la 1:00 p.m., y las familias de Junior / Senior a las 3:00 p.m. Por favor, consulte el sitio web para más información. Notas de la Oficina de Disciplina Habrá tres bailes este año a los que todos los estudiantes de todos los niveles podrán asistir. Los bailes escolares son organizados por el Concilio Estudiantil para crear oportunidades para que los estudiantes interactúen y socialicen después de la escuela. Las fechas de esos bailes son el viernes, 11 de octubre, el sábado, 1 de febrero y el viernes, 24 de abril. El baile de octubre comenzará a las 7:30pm y terminará a las 10:30pm. Las puertas se cerrarán a las 8:30pm y ningún estudiante podrá entrar al baile después de ese horario a menos que hayan recibido permiso antes del baile de la Prefecta de Disciplina, Sra. Gradilla. Además, los estudiantes no podrán salir del baile antes de las 10:00pm. Asegúrese de hacer los arreglos necesarios para su hijo/a sea rocogido/a las 10:30pm y no esté esperando afuera. Las expectativas del código de conducta estudiantil de Cristo Rey aplican a todos los bailes escolares. Además, este mes del martes, 7 de octubre al viernes, 11 de octubre celebraremos la Semana del Espíritu Escolar. Durante esta semana, los estudiantes podrán vestirse de acuerdo a los temas asignados. Si eligen no vestirse con el tema del día, pueden usar pantalón de mezclilla y una camisa de Cristo Rey cualquier día o el código de vestimenta regular de la escuela. Los pantalones de mezclilla deben ser apropiados. No se permitirán pantalones de mezclilla extremadamente flojos o rotos. Los temas diarios serán anunciados por el Concilio Estudiantil. Los estudiantes pueden participar en la Semana del Espíritu, excepto en su día de trabajo. La información y las expectativas sobre estos días también se enviarán a los estudiantes a través de su correo electrónico de la escuela. La participación en los días de la Semana del Espíritu no es obligatoria.

Homecoming 2019 El viernes 11 de octubre, el Concilio Estudiantil y Departamento Atlético de Cristo Rey celebrarán Homecoming con un partido de fútbol y baile escolar. Los estudiantes están invitados a participar en juegos y actividades antes del partido en la plaza. El partido de fútbol serán en el parque Harrison contra la escuela rival Benito Juárez, la fiesta de baile será en el gimnasio de Cristo Rey. El precio del boleto para Homecoming es de $ 10 por estudiante e incluye comida antes del partido de fútbol y la entrada al baile. Los boletos deben comprarse en la escuela del 7 al 11 de octubre para obtener comida antes del juego. Otros bocadillos estarán disponibles para comprar durante el baile. Se requerirá que los estudiantes dejen sus bolsas y abrigos en el check-in del baile dispo-nible por $ .50 en la entrada. El baile se llevará a cabo de 7:30pm a 10:30pm. Oficina de Consejería Universitaria Atención padres de estudiantes de segundo, tercero y cuarto año

Atención Padres de estudiantes de 4to año ¿Necesita ayuda para llenar la solicitud gratuita de ayuda Federal del estudiante (FAFSA), para su hijo o hija?, la escuela Cristo Rey Jesuit High School ofrecerá un taller sobre el FAFSA, el lunes, 7 de octubre del 2019. Al completar la solicitud FAFSA, los estudian-tes serán elegibles para recibir miles de dólares para la Universidad/Colegio. Los Asesores Universitarios y funcionarios de la Comi-sión de Asistencia Estudiantil de Illinois (ISAC), estarán disponibles para ayudarle a completar esta solicitud tan importante. Por favor traiga sus formas de los impuestos federales del 2018 y los W2s. Por favor, anótese en la cafetería de la escuela con el apelli-do de su hija/a en el horario que le corresponde.

Los estudiantes deberán traer esa mañana su boleto de admisión, dos lápices número 2, y una calculadora. Los programas de enriquecimiento de verano son una parte esencial de la experiencia de la escuela secundaria. Si a su hijo o hija le gustaría tener la oportunidad de permanecer en un campus universitario durante un verano o participar en una oportunidad de aprendizaje, comuníquese con la Srta. Delgado. Los estudiantes de tercer año que ya han participado en un programa de enriqueci-miento de verano pueden solicitar un programa internacional de enriquecimiento de verano. Examen PSAT/NMSQT para Estudiantes del Segundo y Tercer Año Estudiantes del segundo y tercer año tomaran el PSAT/NMSQT el sábado 19 de octubre de 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Este examen es un examen nacional estandarizado que los estudiantes deben tomar para ayudarlos a prepararse para el SAT. Si tiene alguna pregunta, no dude en comunicarse con el departamento de consejería universitaria. Feria de Universidades Celebraremos nuestra 17a Feria Anual de Universidades el 2 de octubre de 2019. Todos los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de hablar con más de 60 representantes de admisión a la universidad mas también con organizaciones comunitarias. Por favor anime a su hijo/a a hacer preguntas a los representantes de las escuelas a las que estén pensando en aplicar en un futuro cercano.

Padres de familia, Cristo Rey siempre está apoyando nuestras tradiciones culturales latinas y cada ano tenemos el privilegio de poder expresar una de ella con la construcción de una ofrenda para los difuntos y en esta ocasión deseamos que nuestra ofrenda sea comunitaria. Por ello los invitamos a que participen enviando con su hijo/a una foto de su ser querido fallecido y que quisiera sea recordado en nuestro altar. Pedimos por favor, que la foto sea de tamaño postal y ponga atrás de la foto el nombre del estudiante y nombre de su asesor para poder regresarle la foto una vez que ha pasado la celebración.
