Vocabulary• 46 Base Exponent
The exponent is sometimes referred to as
the power.

What is the meaning of 46 ?• 46 means to multiply the base 4 by itself 6 times.
![Page 3: Exponents and powers](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062307/55844b5ed8b42adf748b489e/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
The meaning of the exponent:
•1.) 46 = 4•4•4•4•4•4
•2.) 43 = 4 • 4 • 4•3.) 41 = 4•4.) 40 = ?

The meaning of the exponent:
•4.) 40 = 1
If 8/4 = 2, then we can say that 23/ 22 = 21. So if 4/4 = 1,we can say that 22/ 22 = 20, therefore 20 must EQUAL 1.
•5.) 4-1 = 1/4

Fill-in the chart•1.) 24 = •2.) 23 = 8 •3.) = 4
•4.) 21 =
•5.) 20 = •6.) 2-1 = •7.) 2-2 = 1/4•8.) 2-3 =
As the exponent gets smaller, what do you
notice about the answer?

Fill - in the chart•1.) 24 = 16
•2.) 23 = 8 •3.) 22 = 4 •4.) 21 = 2
•5.) 20 = 1•6.) 2-1 = 1/2•7.) 2-2 = 1/4•8.) 2-3 = 1/8
