Spotlight on Kenosha County Business

LoU MoLitoR, ExECUtivE DiRECtoR, KENoSHA AREA CHAMBER oF CoMMERCE

January 2011… another year has gone by, another year

starts! I wish that I had a crystal ball to let you know

what’s in store for 2011. Will business boom this year?

Will there be jobs? Will my business grow and prosper?

Will my business survive? These are tough questions,

as tough as today’s economic conditions.

Although I have been told of improvement in some

sectors, it appears that many of our members are

still in “survival mode.” Yet, I strongly believe that we

are on the up cycle and recovery is not too far away.

Perhaps the most important question to ask is how

can my business position itself as it transitions from

“survival mode” to “recovery mode” (and even to

“growth mode”)?

The Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce can help you

answer that question. Your Chamber will do everything

it can to help your business grow and prosper in

2011! We provide marketing strategies, promotional

opportunities and networking events that will put

potential customers and clients in front of you.

One new promotional opportunity is “Spotlight

on Kenosha County Business”, the Chamber’s new

monthly radio show on WLIP starting in January. Each

month, a member can sponsor the half-hour radio

show and appear live on the radio with me. Not only

can you promote your business while on the show, but

you receive 25 promotional slots with the sponsorship.

What a great way to promote your business!

And, of course, February means EXPO! Look for

information about the Kenosha EXPO in this newsletter.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get your business in

front of thousands of potential customers!

Your Chamber Staff, Board and Ambassadors stand

ready to make 2011 your best year ever. Give us a call

at (262) 654-1234 and let us know how we can be of

service.

Have a great Kenosha County Day!

What’s Your Disaster Plan? What would you do if there was a water main break

and your business was without water for a day? This

has already happened numerous times. Fortunately,

our local municipalities are usually quick to deal

with these situations. Are you? The average office

would not be affected unlike a restaurant or chemical

processing plant. Loss of water means no fire systems...

certain machines unusable...loss of coolant. Have you

discussed this with your team? Do you have plans in

place? If the water is off for more than a day what will

you do for long term?

Most businesses are somewhat prepared to handle

medical emergencies but emergencies and business

interruptions take many forms. www.ready.gov lists

different emergencies, emergency supplies, emergency

planning, and the all-important continuity planning to

get your business production back. You can visit this

free resource at www.ready.gov/business/plan/index.

html to help you plan.

Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) lists

different scenarios on their website and provides basic

resources for everyone.

Continuity planning is the hardest. It is more than

stopping or rerouting scheduled shipments. It may

involve temporarily relocating and rebuilding. www.

disasterassistance.gov has a variety of resources and

links.

In the event of a true emergency and you have a need

to contact federal, state, or local government agencies

you can visit www.usa.gov and search for that contact

information for anywhere in the United States. It might

be best to have that information already on hand as

part of your emergency planning.

All businesses, large and small, should have an

emergency plan in place. Take the initiative to protect

your business, you, and your coworkers and make

the plans now so everyone knows what to do in an

emergency.

For more Disaster Planning informoation, visit:

Y-Link Leadership ForumY-Link is a group made up of young, vibrant

professionals interested in developing professionally,

meeting new people and serving our community. In

2010 Y-Link kicked off a Leadership Forum breakfast

series as part of their professional development

initiatives. All of the breakfasts feature a local leader

who provides the young leaders keys to their success

and tips for ongoing professional development. In

2010 the breakfasts featured Jean Moran of LMI,

Bryan Albrecht of Gateway Technical College and Tom

Mahoney of Johnson Bank. This year the group plans

to hold at least six more breakfasts kicking off the 2011

with Chancellor Dr. Debroah Ford of the University of

Wisconsin - Parkside. The first breakfast will be held at

the Kenosha Country Club on January 26th.

Breakfasts are open to community members of all
