“Traveling with the Associates is an intimate and highly rewarding experience. Caltech faculty provide unprecedented access and insights into their breakthrough discoveries.

In a recent adventure to Switzerland, my husband and I were enthralled by a behind-the-scenes tour of CERN, the world’s largest particle collider. Inaccessible to tourists, this ten-billion-dollar science experiment has advanced our understanding of the universe and its origins.”

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17SEVILLE TO CORDOBA TO MADRIDA high-speed train will transport us first to Córdoba. We will spend a full day in this historic town and enjoy a memorable visit to the Mezquita (Mosque), one of the greatest works of Muslim architecture found on any continent. A stop in the Jewish Quarter will include a tour of the stuccoed 14th century synagogue, one of only three to survive the Jewish expulsion of 1492.

The train journey brings us to our final destination in Madrid, where we check into the Westin Palace, a Belle Epoque creation, located in the Golden Triangle of Art and hosted the likes of Salvador Dali, Marlon Brando, and Madonna.

A farewell dinner at the hotel will bid ¡adios! to our travelers joining for only the first portion of the trip.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18RETURN FLIGHTS TO U.S. Individual departures for those not joining the optional post-trip to Madrid.

OPTIONAL POST-TRIP TO MADRIDSUNDAY, MONDAY & TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18-20MADRIDLocal art historian Almudena Guridi will lead a tour of the city by private coach to explore the most iconic sites, including the Gran Via, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and Palacio de Comunicaciones. Itinerary SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10FLIGHTS INTO GRANADA VIA MADRIDPrivate transfer from the airport to Spain’s renowned Parador de Granada. Nestled among the gardens of the Alhambra, this former monastery and one of the world’s great architectural wonders, was built on the orders of the Catholic Monarch and part of the Nasrid palace that hosted kings and queens, presidents, and luminaries since its opening.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11GRANADAGranada is ideally situated at the foot of the great Sierra Nevada mountain range and

at the confluence of four rivers. Professor Wey-Gomez will provide insights as we tour Granada’s Alhambra, the 14th-century Moorish palace where King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to finance Christopher Columbus’ historic voyage; and the Palacio de Generalife (Garden of Paradise), the summer palace and country estate of the Nasrid Emirs. Both are exceptional examples of Royal Moorish residences from the medieval period that are, remarkably, little-altered by time or restoration.

In the afternoon, we will tour the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel), a lavish mausoleum built by Ferdinand and Isabella to commemorate their victory over the Moors;

and the Cathedral, one of only two Renaissance churches in Spain, where we will visit the resting place of Ferdinand and Isabella.

That evening a sommelier and sherry expert will enlighten us on the differences between manzanilla, oloroso, and fino.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12GRANADA CONTINUEDWe will explore the 16th century Charterhouse Carthusian Monastery. One of the country’s finest examples of Baroque architecture, it is famous for its flamboyant interior decoration with complex echoing geometric surfaces, making it a masterpiece of the Churrigueresque style.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13GRANADA TO RONDA TO SEVILLEEnjoy a visit to the ancient city of Ronda, immortalized in Ernest Hemingway’s For Whom the Bell Tolls. An enchanting walking tour will highlight the spectacular panoramas from the Alameda gardens, and the well-preserved Arab Baths.

A tour of the Plaza de Toros de Ronda and its Museo Taurino will provide an educational bull fighting

experience. Continuing on our journey, we will travel to Seville and check into the Hotel Alfonso XIII, one of Spain’s most prestigious addresses in town, inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1929 and restored in 2011. The day will conclude with a traditional Sevillian evening of tapas, song, and flamenco.

WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY & FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14-16SEVILLEWe will explore Seville’s picturesque Barrio de Santa Cruz and wander the labyrinth of narrow streets and alleys of what once was the Jewish Quarter in the middle ages. We will follow in the footsteps of Carmen, from Bizet’s famous opera, and discover the University of Seville (formerly the Tobacco Factory where she worked) and the Real Maestranza bullring (where she met her death).

To round off the afternoon, we will visit the Casa de la Ciencia (House of Science), which serves as a bridge between the scientific research community and the public by sharing contemporary research and information on environmental issues.

Faculty LeaderNicolas Wey-Gomez, who led the Associates to Spain in 2012, has been Professor of History at Caltech since 2010 and is a leading expert on Christopher Columbus, Cervantes, and other figures of medieval and renaissance Spain. Professor Wey-Gomez studies the history of exploration, empire, and globalization, as well as the literature of Spain’s golden age. His widely acclaimed book, The Tropics of Empire: Why Columbus Sailed South to the Indies (MIT Press, 2008), explores the role that science and technology played in forging the Spanish global empire.

As we journey through this captivating country, Professor Wey-Gomez will draw on his unique perspectives and expertise to bring Spanish history to life through lectures and conversation.
