And the castle, with its fabulous Great Hall and Chapel Royal, is one of the country’s top places to visit. From clan feuds to Jacobite uprisings, this once mighty fortress has had a turbulent history. The last soldiers marched away in 1692, blowing up part of the castle as they left. But while the armies have long-since vanished, Urquhart’s ruins remain a proud and spectacular reminder of the past. The story of the castle and the families who lived within its powerful walls is told in the impressive visitor centre.
