Welcome to the Eastman School of Music! I am very pleased to welcome you to our New Student Orientation. Please review this orientation booklet, as it is designed to help you make a successful transition into the Eastman community. During Orientation, you will learn more about Eastman and the College’s expectations, have opportunities to interact in meaningful ways with other new students, meet faculty and staff, and familiarize yourself with the resources necessary to be successful as you begin. Orientation is intentionally structured to help you meet your goals as a new student and meet our goals to assist you along the way.

The Office of Student Affairs is a department tasked with enhancing student growth and development. While your academic deans and faculty members may push you to excel artistically and academically, Student Affairs practitioners work to challenge and support your learning outside of the classroom. The Office of Student Affairs directly oversees the Office for Residential Life and the Office for Student Activities & Engagement. The Office for Residential Life contributes to the holistic development of students through support, programs, and collaborations which foster a safe, inclusive, and engaged community for students living in the Student Living Center (SLC). The Office for Student Activities provides op-portunities for student-focused extracurricular activities, diversity, leadership within clubs and organizations, fun events, and civic engagement.

I encourage you to take advantage of the special opportunities to engage with the Eastman and Rochester communities at large. The relationships you begin to forge this week will be the foundation of your professional networks here at East-man and into the future. Hello and welcome to your newest adventure! It’s an exciting and anxious time, when you will change and grow in innumerable ways as you become who you are meant to be.

I’m excited to be a guide for your college experience. Here in Residential Life, our goal is to make this campus your home. I want each and every one of you to feel that you belong here, not only as a student, but as a person. The Student Living Center (SLC) has been a home for Eastman students since it opened in 1991. All of the rooms come fully furnished, containing a desk, dresser, wardrobe, and a twin, extra-long bed. The rooms have Wi-Fi and many have a great view of Rochester and even Lake Ontario. There is a computer lab, free on-site laundry, a performance hall, and multiple lounges where you can spend time with your friends and study. Over the summer, we have completely renovated our student lounges with new ceil-ings, paint, carpet, mattresses and furniture. The SLC is a secured building that is closely monitored by Public Safety Officers, Resi-dent Advisors, and front desk office assistants. All residential areas are secured through University-issued IDs, which ensures the safety and privacy of all residents.

The Office for Residential Life includes a live-in Assistant Director and 11 Resident Advisors. Together, they provide students with guidance and resources to help students navigate any challenges or concerns that may arise. Additionally, they provide fun programs for the SLC and their halls to help relieve some of the stress of student life.

All undergraduate students who live in the SLC are provided with resources that will empower them to face the rigors of academic life with a live-in support system unlike any other. We can’t wait for the opportunity to meet and support you throughout your time at the Eastman School of Music.

RESIDENT ADVISORS

F R E Q U E N T LY A S K E D Q U E S T I O N S

What is a Resident Advisor?The Resident Advisor (RA) facilitates the social, academic, and personal adjustment of students living in the Student Living Center. They develop a sense of community among residents through fun programming and being a resource to students. RAs enforce the rules and policies of the SLC and serve as a liaison between residents and administration.

If I am locked out of my room, who can I call? If you have a roommate, call them first. Between 8pm-8am, you can call the RA On-Call at 585-764-5707. From 8am-8pm, you can call Public Safety at 585-275-3333.

If I am having issues with my roommate, what do I do?You can reach out to your RA! They are trained in conflict resolution and mediation.

Can we have overnight guests?Guests are only permitted in the residential areas (the basement and upper floors) of the SLC when accompanied by a current SLC Resident. Guests include friends who do not currently attend the Eastman School of Music, as well as East-man students who reside off-campus. Once your guest arrives, they must sign in at the SLC Front Desk. You are respon-sible for your guest at all times, and your roommate must consent to a guest being in your room. Overnight guests are restricted to four nights a month. Residents who violate the guest policy may have their guest privileges suspended and charged for the additional room rent.

Who can I go to if I have questions about residential living?You can ask your RA! They know about SLC policies and campus resources. You can really come talk to them about anything - not just residential life! They are here to help you to have the best possible experience. All RAs have SafeZone, conflict resolution, mediation, and first aid (mental and physical) training.

What does an RA On-Call do?The RA On-Call is the RA you can contact if you are having an emergency, locked out of your room, report suspicious behaviors or odors, and report quiet hour violations. They go on safety rounds each night. A RA will be On-Call Monday-Friday from 8pm-8am each day.

Congratulations! You’re here - the Eastman School of Music. You’ve joined the select group of individuals at this prestigious institution to make your passion into a life-long pursuit. As you continue to dive head-first into study, practice, and a deeper understanding of your unique musicianship, it’s always important to remember and be motivated by the University of Rochester’s motto: “Meliora”, meaning “Ever Better.” In the Office of Student Affairs, our goal is to make your holistic experience at the Eastman School of Music “Ever Better” by providing opportunities for you to engage with other students in co-curricular activities and special events on campus and throughout the Rochester area.

My personal goal is to help cultivate a community of belonging and fun for the purpose of building relationships and relieving some of the pressures of student life. As the Assistant Director for Student Activities & Engagement, I am thrilled to take part in many activities, outings, clubs, and events that we have throughout the year. I want to see each one of you involved at Eastman, beyond your academic studies, in order to enhance your overall experience at this incredible school. Some of the events that I am particularly excited about are: Welcome Weekend, Spring Fling, midnight movie premieres (my personal favorite), the occasional free “on your way to class” breakfasts in Lowry Hall, and (most importantly) the free food trucks right outside my office.

Attend All of the Orientation Events All of the events that we hold are aimed at helping you learn about the resources, departments, and stu-

dent groups that will help you have a successful year here at Eastman. The events also give you unique opportunities to get to know your class and make great friends!

Ask Questions Orientation is full of information and there can be a lot to remember. Do not hesitate to ask questions in

sessions. You can also pose questions to your Team Capitan and/or Residential Advisor. Everyone here is anxious to help you as you begin your first year at Eastman!

“Say Hello” Orientation is a great way to meet new people and make friends, especially because everyone is as new

to Eastman as you are! Everyone is a friend you haven’t met yet, so keep your mind open and remember to say “hello”!

No ID? If you lost your ID, go to Lost and Found (East Wing) - someone may have found it. If not, see an Office

Assistant at the Front Desk to fill out a request form. If your ID is broken, see an Office Assistant at the Front Desk to fill out a request form! If you bring the broken ID, there will be no charge.

Don’t Compare It’s hard, but don’t compare yourself to your peers or the older students. If someone sounds great

in studio, tell them! But don’t feel like you’re not great too. You made it to Eastman, so trust me, you’re incredible!

Attend Concerts Eastman presents over 700 free concerts each year. Go to as many unique performances and events

throughout the year as you can!

Do Laundry Do your laundry at odd times during the day/week that way the machines won’t be busy!

Take Care of Yourself You came to Eastman to learn, but you learn best when you take care of yourself. You can’t learn as well

if you’re sick or tired, so don’t sacrifice those!

Eastman Americana We are a cultural awareness student organization created for the purpose of educating Eastman stu-

dents on the history and importance of traditional American music. We welcome any students interested in learning about the cultural impact of traditional American music and how to play it.

Catholic Newman Community We seek to encourage all to strive toward the highest ideals of Christian spiritual, moral, and intellectual

development as lived and taught in the rich tradition of the Catholic Church.

Hillel at Eastman We seek to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they may enrich the Jewish people and the world.

Additionally, we envision a world where every student is inspired to make an enduring commitment to Jewish life, learning, and Israel.

Inter-varsity Christian Fellowship We seek to establish and advance, at colleges and universities, witnessing communities of students and

faculty who follow Jesus as Savior and Lord: growing in love for God, God’s word, God’s people of every ethnicity and culture, and God’s purposes in the world.

Eastman Tabletop Community Our purpose is to introduce Eastman students in the thought-provoking, stress- relieving platform of

tabletop gaming. Tabletop gaming is comprised of many different types of board, card, and role-playing games. As a club, we work hard to promote an inclusive and socially engaging gaming environment to all those interested from every level of previous gaming knowledge and experience.

Students’ Association Our purpose is to introduce Eastman students in the thought-provoking, stress- relieving platform of

tabletop gaming. Tabletop gaming is comprised of many different types of board, card, and role-playing games. As a club, we work hard to promote an inclusive and socially engaging gaming environment to all those interested from every level of previous gaming knowledge and experience.

Eastman Programming and Involvement Council Our purpose is to enrich the co-curricular life at Eastman by encouraging involvement of all Eastman un-

dergraduate students. We sponsor programs, activities, and events for Eastman undergraduate students and members of the Eastman community. Our events are not only social, but education, recreational, cultural, traditional, community building, co-sponsorships, and on/off-campus events.

Mu Phi Epsilon We seek to foster the ideals of service to school and community and provide opportunities for strong

artistic and personal abilities. We organize philanthropic events that are open to the entire Eastman community in hopes of developing a stronger musical relationship with the Rochester community.

National Association for Music Educators We seek to provide all members with the opportunity to become acquainted with leaders in the music

education profession through participation in programs, demonstrations, discussions, workshops, and performances planned by this chapter, the state music educators association, and NAfME.

Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity We encourage, nurture, and support the art of music. Our purpose is to form chapters of female college

students and alum who have a sincere interest in music; to uphold the highest standards of music; to further the development of music in America and throughout the world; to give inspiration and encour-agement to members; to organize the cultural life of Sigma Alpha Iota members as a contributing factor to their education growth; to support the ideals and goals of the member’s Alma Mater; and to adhere to the highest standards of citizenship in school, community, and fraternity life.

8:00 AM-12:00 PM Student Living Center Move-In | STUDENT LIVING CENTER Incoming first year students move into the Student Living Center with the help of the Eastman Orientation Committee Volunteers and Leaders. Families are strongly

encouraged to come and help with their student’s move in as well. It’s a great time to explore the new living space of their student, as well as, the Student Living Center as a whole with its various resources and amenities.

12:00 PM-2:00 PM Family Welcome Picnic Lunch | STUDENT LIVING CENTER Incoming students and their families may enjoy a meal in the Student Living Center Dining Center. New student meal plans are already active, so remember to bring

your new Student ID with you. Families of new students may eat for free within the Dining Center by using the Eastman Dining Center Voucher that is located in the Orientation folder students received at check in.

12:30 PM-3:30 PM Info Fair and Get Involved Sessions | SPROULL ATRIUM Representatives from area banks, Public Safety, Dining Services, Eastman Writing Center, University Health Service, University Counseling Center, IT, Bookstore, Student

Affairs, Academic Support Services, and other student services will be available.

3:30 PM- 5:00 PM Family Orientation Session | HATCH RECITAL HALL An info session just for parents/family/guardians of undergraduate students with an opportunity to have questions answered by Deans and staff from Public Safety,

Dining Services, University Health Service, and University Counseling Center.

3:30 PM- 5:00 PM Captains and Teams – Ice Breaker Sessions | STUDENT LIVING CENTER Captains and Teams gather for the first time to meet each other as a group. This is a time to have fun, get to know each other better, and do a little bonding for the

days ahead.

5:00 PM-6:00 PM Family Farewell | A chance for students and parents to say ‘farewell’ before the students go to meet with their team Captain, and the parents head home.

Note: After this, students will be busy with various Orientation programs, so contact with parents may be limited as students will be expected to have their phones off during sessions.

10:30 AM-11:45 AM Title IX / “It’s On Us” / RESTORE | HATCH RECITAL HALL This session for new undergraduates will help students understand campus policies, learn about resources, and understand definitions of sexual assault, sexual

misconduct, harassment, and consent.

12:00 PM-1:25 PM Lunch with Captains and Teams | DINING CENTER Lunch is available for all new students who live in the Student Living Center. Students will use their meal plans for this meal.

1:30 PM-3:30 PM Orienteering Event | EASTMAN SCHOOL An event to acclimate new students to Eastman in a fun and challenge by choice environment. Students will participate in their Teams to accomplish tasks, activities,

and crafts all around the campus. The goal is to direct new students to places, resources, and locations that they will frequently visit during their time here at Eastman.

3:30 PM-4:15 PM Class of 2022 Photo | KODAK HALL At the end of the Orienteering event, meet in Kodak Hall promptly at 3:30 PM to have your Class of 2022 picture taken.

4:30 PM-5:45 PM Staying Healthy at Eastman | RAY WRIGHT ROOM Introduction for undergraduates to University Health Service and University Counseling Center. Learn tips on avoiding illnesses, injuries, and where to go when you

need medical assistance.

6:00PM-7:30 PM Dinner | DINING CENTER Dinner is available for all new students who live in the Student Living Center. Students will use their meal plans for this meal.

8:00 PM-10:00 PM Movie Night | STUDENT LIVING CENTER COURTYARD Come out to the Student Living Center Courtyard and enjoy one of Austin’s (the Assistant Director for Student Activities) favorite movies and free popcorn!

Bringing a blanket is recommended.

8:30 AM-10:30 AM Academic Advising for ALL Undergrads in ALL Majors | HATCH RECITAL HALL Academic advising, placement test results, and registration information for ALL undergraduate students.

Bring the packet with you, a pen, or pencil. Dual Degree students must attend this session.

10:30 AM-12:00 PM Dual Degree Advising Session | HATCH RECITAL HALL For all undergraduate Dual Degree students admitted into a degree program at both the College and Eastman. Dual Degree students must attend this session.

12:00 PM-12:30 PM Dual Degree River Campus Primary Advising Session | HATCH RECITAL HALL For all Dual Degree students whose primary degree is on the River Campus. Must also attend previous session 10:30 PM - 12:00 PM.


2:00 PM-3:30 PM Identities@Eastman Panel Discussions | HATCH RECITAL HALL The Identities@Eastman program engages students in a facilitated discussion that explores the way the Eastman community, as well as the broader University of

Rochester community, is shaped by all of our intersecting identities. The program begins with an 60-minute session during which several upperclassmen students share narratives about the ways their identities have affected their college experience thus far. This will be followed by student-initiated small group discussions in which participants will explore topics brought up in the panel and reflect on their own experiences.

7:00 PM-8:30 PM Celebrate Diversity | KODAK HALL Celebrate the global community at the University during our 15th Annual Celebrate Diversity through performances by our amazingly talented students from Eastman

and The College. Sit back and enjoy a unique evening filled with song, dance, poetry, and music! Doors open at 6:00 PM.

8:30 PM-9:30 PM Celebrate Diversity Reception | LOWRY HALL, COMINSKY PROMENADE, WOLK ATRIUM Following the Celebrate Diversity Event, there will be several reception areas for students to connect with the performers and peers for free cookies and conversation.

9:30 PM-11:00 PM Activity Night | STUDENT LIVING CENTER Come hang out your fellow students in a variety of different board games, video games, crafts, movies, and more. It all starts at 9:30 PM in the Orchestra Pit in the

Student Living Center. Attendance is Optional.





Monday - August 27, 2018

7:00 AM-8:30 AM Breakfast | DINING CENTER Breakfast is available for all new students who live in the Student Living Center. Students will use their meal plans for this meal. 8:00 AM Online Registration Begins | ONLINE First year students and all undergraduate Music Teaching and Learning majors must meet with their advisor before registration.

There will be EOC in the Dining Center to answer questions about registration.

9:00 AM-12:00 PM Move-In for Returning Students | STUDENT LIVING CENTER All returning Eastman students, that live in the Student Living Center, may start moving in at this time.


1:30 PM-5:00 PM George Eastman Day of Service | STUDENT LIVING CENTER COURTYARD / OFF-CAMPUS George Eastman Day of Service is a day of community service for all new undergraduates. This is an Eastman tradition!

Students will volunteer their time at various places throughout the city of Rochester. Meet in the SLC Courtyard at 1:15 PM after lunch to get instructions and shirts. Must wear sneakers! Sunscreen is advisable. Buses depart from the Student Living Center at 1:30 PM. Don’t bring large bags!


8:00 PM-9:30 PM EOC Recital | HATCH RECITAL HALL Your Team Captains host a special performance just for you! This is an Eastman tradition!

10:00 PM-1:00 AM Post-Recital Party | HARRO EAST BALLROOM Join your Eastman Orientation Committee for a night out of fun after their performance! This is a formal event. Semi-formal attire is STRONGLY encouraged.
