By coming here today, you have taken another big step on what could be a life-changing journey – one that will open up exciting opportunities, the likes of which you will not experience anywhere else.
At Plymouth University, our mission is to transform lives and advance knowledge through a combination of world-leading education and research. For you that means we provide a first-class student experience enriched by research, professional and practical work and self-development opportunities that in turn enable you to live and work as a global citizen.
Our degrees are much more than a passport to a career. We want you to enjoy and be excited by your area of study and achieve everything you’re capable of, so all our degree programmes are connected to the wider world – be it business, the professions, industry and communities.
From day one, we embed employability skills and opportunities into our curriculum and work with you to develop skills and understandings so you can contribute real value to society at large as well as to the wider economy. With a national reputation for innovative teaching and learning, we want to transform your life through education and help you become a graduate distinguished not only by your academic achievements but also with a deep sense of global, sustainable citizenship.
We are proud of our achievements, having twice been awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education, and being ranked as one of the top four universities under the age of 50 in the country and 37th internationally.
In 2014, nearly two thirds of our research was graded as world-leading or internationally excellent in the Research Excellence Framework, while we were ranked 19th in the UK – and in the top 100 globally – for our research impact. We are also the first university worldwide to be awarded the Social Enterprise Mark – the only independent recognition for organisations who are putting people and planet alongside profit.
Visiting us and meeting our globally-renowned academic staff, our dedicated professional support teams, our current students and indeed prospective classmates is the perfect way to gain an understanding of what it would feel like to be part of our university. It lets you sample the state-of-the-art facilities on our campus, including recent developments such as our performing arts centre, The House, and our revamped and revitalised Students’ Union. It helps you appreciate our place at the heart of the UK’s Ocean City, with all the wider South West of England has to offer in terms of heritage, culture, beaches and more.
I hope your visit gives you a real sense of the friendliness and creativity at the heart of our university community and the range of opportunities and possibilities available to you. You will learn why living in residence halls is such a positive opportunity, about our dedicated student support services and about the opportunities provided by our Students’ Union to get involved in sports, societies, clubs and volunteering. I hope you will be impressed with the university and our current students, who will be available to engage with you on the day.
Take full advantage of today, ask all your questions and we will be happy to explain why we are the right first choice for you. Over the coming months, we will be here to support you and help you make an informed choice about the next stage of your education with Plymouth University.
